Andrea Maack Silk & Dark ~ new fragrances

Andrea Maack Silk

Artist Andrea Maack has launched two new fragrances, Silk and Dark. They join Smart, Craft and Sharp, which launched in 2010.

Silk (shown) ~ “SILK feels like a delicate fabric touching the skin. Drawing inspiration from original hand-drawn prints, it is a scent of timeless luxury, paying tribute to French fashion houses with a heritage of silk scarves. The idea of Silk is to enhance the feeling of wearing a perfume – its powdery, airy, earthy, leathery aura makes you imagine a silky smoothness caressing your neck.” The notes include violet leaves, freesia, lime tree, linen, magnolia, cistus, earth (ground), papyrus, vanilla and amber.

Dark ~ “DARK is heavily oxidized rose mixed with violets and leather. Its a take on the classic rose note, a bloody, flowery, leathery, seductive perfume with a purpose. The heavy metallic note in the scent brings an unexpected surprise while its animalistic and powdery side suggests certain comfort both reassuring and protective. Dark is a scent with a mind of its own, and it can take you to places you never dreamed of going.” Notes feature yellow mandarin, pink pepper, petitgrain, lemon tree, aldehydes, rose, metal, green apple, ambergris, orange blossom and Virginia cedarwood.

Andrea Maack Silk and Dark are available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum, €85.

A lot of these Andrea Maacks actually sound interesting, despite the weird ad copy, but there is just SO much to try that I probably will never get to these.

LOL at the note of “earth (ground)” though.

The amount of new niche product is simply amazing — I not only can’t smell them all, I can’t remember which ones I *have* smelled.

I very much like two out of the first three but I can never remember which ones so I never have bought them.

These both sound gorgeous too. I will undoubtedly get samples – maybe one day buy full bottles! :-)

Oooh, I love the dramatic description of Dark! Now I’ll have to sample it just to know if it lives up to ‘Dark is a scent with a mind of its own, and it can take you to places you never dreamed of going’… ;)

It sounds too scary to wear, LOL…

Dark made me think of Secretions Magnifique and I shuddered with horror. Hopefully it won’t be nearly that bad since I do like a good dark rose. I have samples of the first three and found them nice enough, though I don’t recall if any of them fell in the bottle-worthy category, which probably means they didn’t. :)

Did anyone else read the heading as Silly & Dark?

Dark sounds great..I hope it’s as dark and dramatic as described though.

Wait, powdery AND airy AND earthy AND leathery AND silky? I don’t know; that sounds like a lot going on.

I had the chance to sample these in a shop yesterday (along with the rest of the line). I’m pretty new to the world of perfume, so my take may be as sophisticated as someone with more experience. This is my first comment ever! :)

Dark didn’t smell at all “dark” to me – more bittersweet and fruity. It reminded me of Dewberry from the Body Shop (although I haven’t actually smelled that in many years, so I could be way off with that comparison). After it dried down it was much more appealing – the fruitiness (green apple?) mellowed out and it smelled, well, ‘darker’. But it took hours before I actually started liking it, so overall not good for me.

Silk was really interesting. I don’t really know how to describe it except that it did smell very silky and smooth. The texture of the smell was remarkable. I couldn’t help constantly smelling my arm to try to figure out what I was smelling and if I liked it. I never really figured out what I was smelling, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t like it, but it was memorable and I might give it another try.

This whole line sounded pretty interesting, and the bottles are lovely (I’m such a sucker for nicely designed packaging). I really wanted to love at least one, but none of them were great for me. Craft and Silk are by far the most unique, but don’t really suit my taste. Sharp is like chocolate and root beer – way too sweet and desserty for me. I found Smart to be pretty nice (subtle, woody, spicy, musky), but not very distinctive. All seem to be of high quality and last a long time on me. I’m curious to see some other opinions.
