Lazy weekend poll ~ Haiku challenge 2011!

Today, a repeat of last year's very popular Haiku challenge: pick a perfume, any perfume, write a haiku about it. Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

You can also, if you like, write your Haiku about a perfume house instead of a particular perfume.

Your host today is Jill. If you've never met, let me introduce you:

  14. Lavandula says:

By the way, Hi, Jill!! Nice to meet you:))
Recently I’ve been exploring all Bond no.9s. It’s always been my favorite perfume house and there was so many fragrances from them I still haven’t tried yet, finally it was the time that something had to be done about it. I started swapping on MUA again and I’ve even been trading my partial bottles and minis of L’Artisan and Serge Lutens etc. for all kinds of Bond no.9 bon-bons. I was being super generous for little bon-bons!! My old time favorites include Nuits de Noho, Chinatown, Little Italy, Fire Island, Park Avenue and quite a few others but thanks to my recept MUA swapping I FINALLY tried Bleecker Street, Fashion Avenue, Harrods for Him and Her, Bryant Park, High Line, Andry Warhol series, signature perfume and a couple others. I am MADLY in love with Fashion Avenue and Harrods for Her. I also adore Bleecker Street for my fiance. This little poll with haiku is like a perfect exercise and made me have some thoughts about the perfumes I just fell in love with.

I am still DYING to try Coney Island. I have been searching for a sample of it on MUA, but for some reason I have no luck. Even when I offer items for a lot more of a value and specific wishlist items to other swappers, I got no preplies to my messages! Every other thing I wanted to swap for on MUA was a success just not the Coney Island. I also ordered a set of samples from Bond no.9 website… I ordered all 6 of the samples just to include Coney Island in them… and they substituted it for two other samples with a note they were out of the Coney Island ones!! Can you believe that? I really ordered the whole set (I also got Chinatown, Nuits de Noho, Park Avenue, Fire Island – which I already have and adore but it’s never too much of my favorites) JUST to be able to include Coney Island in them and no luck! I am starting to think I will never be able to sample Coney Island and it’s my NUMBER ONE fragrance on my “to try” list. Does anyone on here have even just a drop of it? I know this is not MUA but I had no luck there… If anyone has any amount of Coney Island on here and would consider doing a “nowsmellthis” swap with me, please reply to my comment! Let me know quickly if you’re interested in anything from Serge Lutens, Montale, Dyptique, Chanel and some other high-end things I have. I am really so desperate for Coney Island… Thanks so much!

    • Jill says:

I really like some of the Bonds; just wore Bryant Park the other night. Coney Island, I have never tried either — I hope someone here can help you out!

    • Hi Lavandula, I have a sample of Coney Island (it’s unwrapped, but unused). If you’d like to email me, it’s eyelineronacat at gmail dot com.

    • Winifrieda says:

Oh LOL…cannot you get to a department store…even in Australia the Bonds are in a couple of our department stores…maybe that is why the folks on the boards are not being too responsive to swap ideas because they have mostly tried them already??

  15. FragrantWitch says:

Yay! I loved this last year, so glad to see it back!

  19. Lavandula says:

    Jo Malone Acacia:

    Tell me the truth
    Your heart is exquisite musk
    Takes my breath away

HeI need your HELP!! Here is the thing: I love well-blended, powdery musks and almondy perfumes. This is exactly what Jo Malone’s Acacia Blossom cologne smells like. I have no idea what real acacia smells like although I know Jo Malone’s approach turns out to be the most beautiful musk I ever smelled. I’ve gone through many musks including Clair de Musc, Tom Ford White Musk Collection, Montale Musks and many others… just because I can never get enough of that pure, dreamy, powdery-white muskiness!! Well what a suprise I found my number one musk ever in a “Acacia” cologne accord from Jo Malone. The sad thing is – it’s impossible to find it. I cheerish my 9ml spray bottle and it’s like liquid gold to me.

Here is where I need your help: as impossible to find as it is, why is it impossible to even google it? When I search on google: “Jo Malone Acacia Blossom” all I find is “Nectarine & Honey Blosson” which yes, it does have acacia listed in it’s notes, but it’s not the same cologne I’m looking for. I am so curious to read about it’s official list of notes! Does anyone have any info about this scent? What is the list of notes for this? Why is it impossible to even find a word mentioned about discontinued Jo Malone fragrances? And of course… what does acacia smell like? Is the muskiness and all that powder natural for Acacia blossom? Jo Malone’s Acacia smells nothing like a tree/plant/greenery/shrubs. It just smells like musk and powder and almonds… why if acacia is a tree?

    • Jill says:

Gosh, this sounds wonderful — I’ve never heard of it and didn’t know it was ever part of the JM repertoire! I really like the haiku!

    • Woodgirl says:

I assume it refers to the tree blossoms. Some flowering trees are quite fragrant. I remember 30 years ago, a blossoming mimosa tree by the laundromat I used smelled like Juicy Fruit chewing gum.

I see what you mean about it not being mentioned anywhere. The only place I see it is for sale on the ubiquitous online auction site, at a reasonable price if you love the stuff.

I have acacias here in the woods of west central Fla, but they are not blossoming right now. Ours have wicked long thorns that will easily go through your bootsoles.

    • Ann says:

Hi Lavandula, it looks like your beloved Acacia
is part of a series that Jo Malone calls Fragrance Chronicles.
I found it on the JM site. I only know this because I was
trying to find an unusual JM fragrance and it turned out
to be part of one of these sets. Here’s the link — hope it
      helps!

    • Jill says:

These are both awesome, and I’m dying at the Paco Rabanne one!

      • kaos.geo says:

It just popped into my mind.. I just cannot understand how something so generic sells millions. I guess it is a marketing triumph.

If you want to sell a generic frag like hotcakes, hire the people that did the 1 Million campaign.

If you want to create a succesful celebrity scent line, good scent but still, you want it to sell like hotcakes..hire the people that did Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku lovers line (and the cute flankers)

        • moore says:

Kaos.Geo, 1 Million sells a bllion because it’s sweet and sweet fragrances are suscessfull with girls. Its popular campaign works a lot, its fragrance is not bad and is a little bit feminine, what’s rare on the men’s perfumery.
          Good haikus.

      GOOD ones, Kaos.geo!

  49. annemarie says:

Off topic (sorry Jil!), but it’s so interesting that Bond No 9 has featured a lot today. Yesterday I walked past the Bond counter at my local department store (I’m in Australia), which for some time has decreased the amount of counter space that it devotes to this line, and noticed that everything was half price. This is the only retailed of Bond No 9 in this city , and it looks like it is on the way out. I’m not Bond fan, but still, it’s a pity,

    • Jill says:

That is a shame, Annemarie. I do appreciate the Bond line … although an overwhelming amount of them don’t work for me, they have a handful that are really keepers for me and I think they do some interesting stuff.

      • Rappleyea says:

Second this, and now I wish I had tried them all!

    • Jill says:

I agree, you are making me want to revisit this line and try the ones I haven’t yet!

  80. 50_Roses says:

    Annick Goutal Sables

  81. Haunani says:

    O Womanity!

    • Marjorie Rose says:

Ha! “strange brew,” indeed! I can’t decide if I like or loathe this one! (Now if we could work in the phrase, “Oh Womanity, the humanity!” into a poem, we’re golden!)

    • Jill says:

Oh, goodness! Haven’t tried this one either — do I want to? ;)

    • moore says:

Womanity is really the strangiest fragrance I’ve ever tried. It’s smells what it´s supposed to. It’s a strange smell of dirty socks with some sweet and salt… but that bottle worths a buy… it’s a shame the liquid is pink…

  82. dominika says:

Eight samples of serge bottled doors to unknown lands opening slowly

    • nozknoz says:

Just right for Uncle Serge and the joy of new SL samples!

  83. dominika says:

Sorry about the spacing! I’m writing on my cell :)

    • Rappleyea says:

Ahh… you shouldn’t have admitted it – I thought you were being artistic. Good one!

    • Jill says:

Nice, and so true about Lutens.

    adieu, little prince

    Dear House of Guerlain
my perfume vault has grown fat
while my wallet has grown thin

    • Woodgirl says:

Ooops! That last line was meant to read:
      my wallet grows thin

Shouldn’t try to count before I’ve finished my first cup.

      • Rappleyea says:

I need to sign my name to that House of Guerlain peitition as well!

        • OperaFan says:

          Count me in, too!

    • Jill says:

      Really like both of these!

    *****

    • Marjorie Rose says:

Mmm. . . .purring soft kittens!

    • Jill says:

Oh wow, I love that MKK is kittens on you (though it’s kind of unfathomable to me! :) )

      • jenmeade says:

I may be incredibly anosmic to it. Who knows? I asked hubby how I smelled, and at first he said “like a donkey”. But I asked again later and the next day, and he loved it both times…??? I haven’t worn it out in public yet. lol

        • Jill says:

I cannot and will not wear it in public … and yet, I do have an affection for it.

    • I totally agree with your Fresh Cannabis Rose haiku, it gave me a headache too! And yes, I scrubbed.

  90. This is so much fun! What a talented bunch we are!

    • nozknoz says:

So – true! Very glad to see the haiku poll reappear!

      • 50_Roses says:

  92. Rappleyea says:

    Rosine Pour Homme

    Lavender, roses,
patch…But wait! What goes on here?
    Jicky’s great-grandson!

    • nozknoz says:

Aha – cool haiku and great idea for what to try today!

      • Rappleyea says:

I loved RdH, but it did read very much like Jicky on my skin. I’m interested to hear your impression.

        • nozknoz says:

Don’t know if it’s my skin or my Jicky, but to me Jicky is clearer, with high notes – that amazing combination of lavender, lemon and civet really sings. Rose d’Homme is woody or smoky, in a lower more uniform register. But they do have a lot in common – at least as much as most grandkids!

    • Jill says:

      Nice!!

    • Haunani says:

      Neat!

  93. Lavandula says:

I love all the haikues about MKK. I have never tried it yet though:)I’ve tried so many other musks but just not that one. I get the feel from all description, but can someone actually compare it another fragrance?

  94. Irismist says:

      • Jill says:

I’m loving these different takes on Dzing!

  101. dominika says:

    Dzing

    Between leather whips
    and apples, strength and sweetness
    she walks the tightrope

    • Jill says:

Wow, two very different odes to Dzing! in a row. I love it, Dominika!

      • Bee says:

as a Dzing! fan, this is my favorite too!

    • Rappleyea says:

Oh, may I play too? I’ve said this before, but Dzing smells exactly like my skin does after being out at the horse sales. Therefore….

      Dzing
      Horses, leather, hay,
      disinfectant in the air.
      Kentucky horse sales.

      • Jill says:

I like this one too! Dzing! may be the “most-haikued” scent this time!

        • Rappleyea says:

Either Dzing or OJ Woman. We ought to do a tally.

  102. samberg says:

    “Un Jardin Sur Le Toit”

    garden compost note?
    weekend sojourn to Nordstroms
    a fraud by Jean-Claude!

My fav so far is Lexy’s ode to L’Heure Bleue.

    • Jill says:

      “A fraud by Jean-Claude” — say it ain’t so!

    • moore says:

Oh, Mr. Ellena has a big number of enemies!!!! But he also has a bigger number of fans! ;)

  103. kindcrow says:

I’ve really enjoyed reading these. You are very talented! My husband helped with mine:

Vanilla Orchid Signature Scent by Caswell-Massey

    “You smell good,’ he says
And kisses me on the neck
    Glad he likes it, too

    • Jill says:

Oh, I love that, kindcrow! So sweet. I have not tried this particular Caswell-Massey scent, but it sounds nice. I really like their Elixir of Love and Freesia scents.

    • Haunani says:

      That IS sweet!

  104. Irismist says:

Inspired by Lexy’s beautiful L’Heure Blue haiku
I really do enjoy all the others as well!

    Apres L’Ondee

  107. nozknoz says:

Amouage Opus IV – a startling scent!

    Maghrebi spices
    hit the skillet sizzling
    male sweat in the air

    • dominika says:

Those roman numerals didn’t ever inspire me to try any of those, but you make that one sound really good :)

      • nozknoz says:

Dominika, I also find it hard to get excited about numbers, or to remember which is which after I try. Had to try this one, though, because the nose is Jacques Flori who did Etro Messe de Minuit and Shaal Nur. Not what I expected at all but I’m appreciating cumin this time.

        • dominika says:

All the more reason to put this one on my to-try list :) I love Messe de Minuit — I’ve been wanting an FB for awhile, but somehow I’ve held back because I feel like I should be buying sheers or florals for spring at this time of year :P

    • Jill says:

      Love this! It’s so active!

    • Haunani says:

Wow – I can smell this just from your words!

    • moore says:

      So far so good Nozknoz!

  108. nozknoz says:

    Melody of spring flowers
    Love’s springtime bouquet.

    Chamade:
    March winds blow a kiss
    Shoots shudder at their caress
    Hushing hyacinth.

    • Rappleyea says:

      Great job! All beautiful!

    • Jill says:

Oooh …. love them all, especially the Voile d’Ete one!

  110. 734elizabeths says:

    • Haunani says:

I like the way you made yourself the OJ Woman!

  113. Rappleyea says:

My informal relationship with Mitsouko born of long years acquaintance:

    Mitsy, my old friend,
you’re a walk through mossy oaks,
    eating a sweet peach.

    • RuthW says:

Great haiku – I love Mitsouko but sometimes when we take a walk she likes to trip me or shove me down a riverbank.

    • Jill says:

Umm, I love how you made her a person!

  114. Irismist says:

    Love the OJ Woman haikus!!!!!

    Infusion d’Iris

    A good friend of mine
    Never heavy, always deep
    Her story is sheer

    Hiris

    Strange carrots, green rose
    Iris jingles her silver bells
    She reigns, pure of heart

    • Jill says:

Very nice … you nailed Infusion d’Iris, one of my faves!

  115. esmerelda says:

These are all amazing–evocative and gorgeous (or LOL funny)! Not only are they fabulous haiku, but they make me want to rush out and try lots of new scents–even more than Lucky Scent descriptions!

    For Tubereuse Criminelle:

  117. 50_Roses says:

    Iris Silver Mist

    Gigantic dirt clods
    Decayed, six-foot-tall carrot
    The stuff of nightmares

(To all the ISM fans–sorry, but it was the worst scrubber I ever tried)

    • Jill says:

This is hilarious! ISM doesn’t work for me either, unfortunately.

  118. Tama says:

    One spray on my throat
my knees buckle in sheer bliss
    Carnal Flower love

  119. mgrazulis says:

    Soivohle Underworld~

    Dark earthen balsam
    Persephone meets Pluto
    Vetiver story

  120. Mademoiselle says:

    Imagination!
    Havana Vanille, take me
    Sinful delights await us

  121. An Ode to Perfume Haiku Writers

    These are amazing
    It’s hard to choose a fav’rite
    More perfume haikus!

    • L says:

      You said it, my dear
      So many lovely perfumes
      Summed up succinctly

  122. esmerelda says:

I’ve never seen so many beautiful haiku in one place–and so brilliantly capturing each scent! And they are all so interesting, too. Here’s one more:

    A La Nuit

    Jasmine ecstasy
    Intense charisma! Luscious
    Perfume for my soul

  123. esmerelda says:

And one more before I belatedly go to bed, after this addictive bedtime reading:

    Lipstick Rose

    Saucy ingenue
    Not me–yet you always bring
    Smiling happiness

  124. Stephan says:

    Tauer’s “ZETA”

    Whispered sweet words
    Under linden blossoms‘ veil –
    Chanting nightingale.

  125. Lavandula says:

Jo Malone Blue Agava & Cacao:

    My latin lover
    Primitive raw love we make
    Scent of love and dark

  126. Lavandula says:

    Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir:

    Pure incense pure sex
Fruit of love in a silk dress
    Red silk on bare skin

  127. Lavandula says:

    Jo Malone Black Vetyver Cafe:

    My cappa coffee
    Drenched in incense so rich
    Drives me crazy

  128. Lavandula says:

    Jo Malone Grapefruit:

    My senses awakaned
Standing in a garden breathing in
    The air of summer

  129. Lavandula says:

Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin:

    Caribbean sea breeze
    Why are you so stubborn?
    Come off my skin!!

    • Lavandula says:

So from Jo Malone I’ve tried and own: Blue Agava & Cacao (numero uno!! my new signature, most beautiful gourmand you can ever imagine, I’d die for it that’s how much I love it:), Black Vetyver Cafe (an all time favorite of mine, adore it so much always), Pomegranate Noire (newest discovery, suprisingly beautiful incense just like in Black Vetyver Cafe, adore it), Graperfruit (the only nice grapefruit that never turns bad on my skin, very well-blended, none of the cat urine stuff, just a beautiful, tart, summery citrus), Acacia Blossom (the most GOR GE OUS musk I’ve ever smelled, almondy-powdery dream), Cassis (very nice, slightly green – but not too much, fruity in a very deliscious way, very natrual and ulifting) – all very very nice and definitely worth a try. There was one more I’ve sampled before… Lime Basil & Mandarin. Oh what a horrible scrubber! A nightmare! How could one of my most favorite perfume houses create such a mistake? There is no juicy mandarin/orange note at ALL in it. All I ever got was a sour (yes sour, not tart but sour) green herby note and… nothing else. I love deliscious mandarin note in perfumes that’s why I bought a couple of samples of it on ebay. I thought I was either going to love it, like it or just be ok with it… well I would have never thought I was going to hate it with passion! There is very few fragrances I ever say that I HATE. Well Lime Basil & Mandarin… I hate you. I cannot stand you at all. How is it possible anything I try from Jo Malone i instantly fall in love with, I love the simple yet so elegant spirit of them all, except for this one… ugh.

  130. Dzingnut says:

Eau de Kitteh Breath (my dream fragrance)

    Cat yawns in my face,
    A blast of stinkiness,
    Won’t someone please bottle this?

  131. aimiliona says:

    Après l’Ondée

    Heliotrope seeks the sun.
    This one’s for Easter.

    Douce Amère

    Strange yet familiar,
    Root beer’s apotheosis.
    So this is absinthe?

  132. ailouros says:

    No shower perturbs
    this summ’ry somnolence
    but Apres L’ondee.
