That ad is very 80′s, but I say that with love.

I was never crazy about Poison, or any of the flankers. Oh, wait– that’s a lie. I did love Tendre Poison, or whatever it was called. I’m guessing that my tastes have changed enough over the years that I wouldn’t like it that much now, but who knows. I think all of the Poisons have been pretty well done, so I certainly wouldn’t be averse to trying this.

Hypnotic Poison is my favorite of the flankers. Don’t think I’m going to like it floralized, but who knows — I’ll certainly try it.

      • Posted on 8 July 2010

I thought the original was a “floral” rose oriental? I still haven’t tried it even though it’s been recommended many, many times.

        • Posted on 8 July 2010

Weird. I don’t know why I though HP was a rose scent. I read your old review just now. Sounds worth trying for sure. I wonder if this flanker is meant to be “lighter” or just sweeter or what…

        • Posted on 8 July 2010

It might well have rose, I don’t know, but it isn’t mostly rose (are you thinking of Midnight Poison?) and from the description it sounds to me like maybe they’ve toned down the weird aspects and amped up the vanilla flowers, which won’t please me but might please everybody else.

          • Posted on 8 July 2010

You’re probably right that I’m thinking of Midnight Poison (people recommended it for a dark rose that could be pulled off by a man).

          • Posted on 8 July 2010

A man could totally wear Midnight Poison: it’s a dark but clean and stripped-down rose-patchouli-vanilla without even the faintest hint of the feminine about it, absolutely unisex. I bought a bottle the second it hit the shelves. (I mean, I tried it first, and it was love at first sniff; it was what I had wanted Voleur de Roses to be.)

I will totally try the new Hypnotic Poison: I can’t wear the original (it’s just complete horrorshow on me, for some reason), but I’d love to smell what they’re going to do with it. Doesn’t sound like something I’d wear, but I’m intrigued anyway.

I love it! It reminds me of Magnum PI!

Based on the color scheme, I expected the notes to include grape, but maybe the stems and leaves will bring something green and vegetal to the mix.

When the original Poison first came out, some people thought it smelled like grape juice (not me, though). I admit it, I was a Poison girl in the late 80′s.

        • Posted on 9 July 2010

Not grape juice… industrial-strength cherry cough syrup.

As you might guess, I wasn’t a fan. It may have been mostly that people used to bathe in it, though.

To me, the original poison has, until today, a black currant juice aroma…

Really 50s/80s, I think. Fifties eye makeup (and that whole flower-hat deal, like a 50s Vogue cover) but 80s lips and bottle.

Well I love the original Hypnotic Poison, so I will try this even though I’m unsure of the floral aspect.
Can I just say how THRILLED I am that the gorgeous Monica Bellucci, who is 45, is the face of this rather than some plastic spastic teen rolling around in her underwear!

      Everything you said!

She really is gorgeous. They went a little overboard on the photoshop, but they always do.

Is she really 45?? I had no idea!

        Posted on 8 July 2010

Oh yeah, born in 1961 – and she has posed several time without makeup for European magazines and looks even better than in the airbrushed photo above. I will stop gushing now.

Sorry, born in 1964 – cannot add or subtract today!

It’s ok, neither can I, so I would have taken your word for it. :)

The floral headdress reminds me of a Hawaiian Luau but the makeup says otherwise. I do like it though. Love the colors.

  4. Posted on 8 July 2010

I rather like most of the Poisons even if I rarely wear them. It is all very much a love/hate kind of affair. However, Monica is one of my style icons — at 45 could she seriously get any more beautiful — and so I may have to give it a sniff if only for that.

Something about Poison and using all my favourite ladies in their ad campaigns. I’m convinced Dior is out to bring me to financial ruin anyway with their couture.

    • Posted on 8 July 2010

Dior has gotten little enough money out of me for perfume or couture, so I have no complaints ;-)

Yeah I dont know if this can out shine the original Hypnotic! But I’ll sure let it try! I’m very excited! The bottle looks amazing! : )

Monica Bellucci, oh the gorgeousity!! Nice model choice Dior :0)

I used to love Hypnotic Poison. Now it seems so synthetically sweet. I still love the original Poison and bought some vintage from ebay not so long ago.

I don’t think HP needs any “floral-ing” up, but I’ll certainly try it.

I will absolutely try this – I have HP and am curious to see what they’ve done with it. I have to chime in regarding Monica Bellucci – she is fabulous.

I was so traumatized by a co-worker to doused herself liberally with Poison and its flankers that I can’t truly appreciate the scent for what it is. I may sniff this, though, in case the trauma has faded enough for me to be able to enjoy some part of this scent again!

At first I cringed a bit over another flanker of a flanker, but I do like the original Hypnotic Poison more and more each time I wear it, so will definitely check this out. And agreed about Monica. She just epitomizes confidence and gorgeousness and seems so comfortable with who she is. That’s truly great to see and I admire Dior for the ad campaign and can only hope to be that together on a *really* good day. lol :)

I need to explore/re-explore all the Poisons – I was a big Poison girl in the day but have not done more than paper-sniff any of the other ones. Pure Poison eludes me completely on paper. This sounds pretty nice (although bitter almond scares me a little)!

I’m curious about this one. I’m fan of the original Hypnotic Poison, that on my skin dries to a cozy and warm vanilla scent after the medicine-boozy almond opening. If they really explore the floral facet of vanilla, it’d be something interesting, since it’s rare to see vanilla focused scents that aren’t foody at some degree.
Has anyone tried Hypnotic Poison Extrait?

I’ve been wearing HP since it came out, with love, in all possible variants, but I don’t remember an extrait.

The fragrance used to be stronger and fuller and got unfortunately diluted over the years – the bitter almond was curara-strength! :-) Also, it was nevr done in EDP, only EDT. There was an “intense” version called “the Ruby Collection” where they did something strange to the mix. I prefer the old one.

As my tastes are changing – now I wear Midlight Poison at night – I would have loved Dior to amp the woody-spicy side rather than pile on the flowers, especially tuberose which I hate. I wonder whose tastes they focus grouped to get this idea.

As any HP fan I will try the new version, am a little skeptical and I hope Robin will revive this thread, or add another, in September, so we can compare expectations and reality.

Hi everyone. I’ve been lurking for the past two years, this is my first time joining in. The first thing this ad reminds me of is Marc Jacobs’ Lola because of the colour scheme…

It is a wonderfull scent. It is not so heavy as the original HP, the dry down is identically with the HP, only in the beginning there are a few flowers. I like the original but it is too heavy for me, if you want something lighter, this is a good option.

    TESTED!!!! And LOVED!!!!

    Totally full-bottle-worthy

It is a tad softer and more flowery than the original HP, it sort of floats around you rather than be the trailblazer HP is. Also, there is a bad-girl smoky-leathery-rubbery note in the original HP that’s missing here.

Will definitely buy a bottle but that doesn’t mean I’m dumping the original. Definitely need both! :-D

Oh, and the bottle is gorgeous! Makes the old bottle look outdated. But one is not wearing the bottle ;-)

I am BEYOND irritated that this will not be available in the U.S!!!!!

  24. Posted on 27 November 2010

I smelled this in the UK at a Duty Free recently- it smelled a lot like the original HP, but a bit more intense. I didn’t spray it on my skin, as I had already sampled the heck out of new fragrances while waiting forever for my plane to take off :) I kind of wonder how it compares.

< Just read prior comments AFTER posting ;) …I'm sad to hear that they added florals and took away some "edge", but I guess I'm glad I didn't purchase it. I'm rather picky about florals, and HP is still my fave Dior fragrance.
