Lazy Friday poll ~ five questions

Table Cape Tulips

A quick reminder: there are less than 2 weeks left to enter the Prix Eau Faux! And now on to the poll…

1. What fragrance are you wearing today?

2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it.

3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.

4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?

5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?

Answer as many or as few as you like. And my answers…

1. Crown Eau de Russe, for the second day in a row.

2. I am still trying to think of one!

3. I’m sure there’s a more recent example, but what comes to mind is Prada Infusion de Fleur d’Oranger.

4. The New Yorker.

5. Valentino: The Last Emperor. I don’t much care about fashion, but I found it fascinating — like a glimpse into a parallel universe.

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today? Balenciaga Paris LOVE IT!

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it. See above, I’m NOT a floral girl, I like heavy orientials. I wear them year round, just vary the amount.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it. Tom Ford White Suede, a huge scrubber and gave me a headache.

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine? Sauver cooking magazine, it’s food porn. I used to prefer Gourmet until it went away, still sad about that.

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched? “The Art of the Steal” this last Monday. Documentary on the Barnes Foundation art collection and how Philly politicos essentially stole it right out from under them and moved to Philly Art Museum. I’m a film historian and read spec scripts for studios so I’m into films big time.

Oh, I did not know someone had done a documentary about the Barnes Foundation — will add that to my list, thanks so much!

Oh, that film sounds good, KR. I just “saved” it on my Netflix queue. You might like my film (answered way down the comments list): “The Rape of Europa”, a spellbinding documentary about the Nazis stealing the masterpieces of Europe. You can watch it instantly on Netflix.

i looove these tulips from the perspective of an ant

    1. started with Verte Violette, then tried Ninfeo Mio, which is so beautiful minus that coconut-y smell, then tried Chanel no19. which is a rubber.

    2. I thought i would not like Diorella, for the tabac note, no i think i will buy a FB of a hopefully older version.

    3. Melograno was a bit of a dissapointment, way to much incense on me

    4. Calvin and Hobbes : )

    5. i can hardly remember, but if we focus only on good ones it was Wall-E, last century

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

      I adore Calvin & Hobbes.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

Melograno is a strange one. I adore it because of the incense, but I can definitely see how it would not appeal to a lot of people. I try to use a disclaimer whenever I recommend any of the SMN fragrances because they do seem to be something people either love or hate.

        i have a tiny decant only , fortunately : )

Happy Friday Everyone! Feeling very blessed by incredibly nice spring weather after being flooded out last week!

1.) wearing original EL PC today

2.) I did not think I would like Prada or Prada Intense and dang it! I love them both!

3.) I thought I would love Chanel’s Allure but noooo! ! ~ just way too blah! I was amazed because i do not consider myself trendy or unconventional in any way so for me to find a perfume as blah is saying something!

4.) I gave up getting magazines when I discovered the internet, is that sad?

5.) Crazy Heart – I expected it to be cornball but it really wasn’t. It was very well done and moving.

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Can’t wait to see Crazy Heart. And agree about Allure!

    • guerlaingirl
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Allure is what started me on my perfumista trip! I purchased a bottle, wore it daily, woke up one morning & said, “blah!” LOL!

  5. Posted on 19 March 2010

    1. Guerlain Chamade, parfum and EdT — good thing I don’t live in Detroit!

    2. I didn’t think I would hate it, but I tried Bandit only because I wanted to learn about galbanum and wound up LOVING it.

    3. I thought I would love Love Speaks Primeval (Liz Zorn/Soivohle), but it was pungently weird on me. I don’t hate it, but I’ve not felt compelled to sample again.

    4. I don’t get any print magazines.

    5. An Education — I almost never make it to the movie theatre, but I knew Carey Mulligan and made a point to get out for that one.

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

LOL…it is ok to live in Detroit, just don’t work for the city ;-)

    1. Essence of Beauty Jasmine/Ginger (yes, the CVS brand!) and Origins Ginger Essence – very nice layered together.

    2. I thought I would not like SJP’s Covet because I did NOT like Lovely, but I LOVE Covet.

    3. Michael Kors — way too much tuberose on me. I have the kind of nose where if gardenia or tuberose is a note in a fragrance, that is ALL I can smell and it knocks me out.

    4. Mental Floss

    5. Inglorious Basterds (just saw it last weekend – despite the fact that it rewrites history, it was very stylish and fun and I cared about the characters).

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

Laura, together we would have a balanced nose — I am almost completely anosmic to tuberose and gardenia, much to my dismay.

      • LauraBFromBufaD
        Posted on 19 March 2010

I would happily give you my gardenia/tuberose super sensory power :)

  7. Posted on 19 March 2010

    1. Elixir – Penhaligon’s
    2. I don’t think I have one yet. There’s a sample of Angel by Thierry Mugler that I’m actively putting off wearing though, maybe it will be that ;)
    3. YSL Elle Intense, which smelt divine on the strip and I rhapsodised about for a couple of weeks. When I tried it on my skin I knew in seconds it was a mistake.
    4. Empire Magazine – movies are my other big obsession
    5. Fantastic Mr Fox – was lucky enough to be at UK premiere and thought a delightful film for both children and Wes Anderson fans

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

I really want to see Fantastic Mr. Fox — I’m a huge Wes Anderson fan. And you smell great!

      • Joe
        Posted on 19 March 2010

That is a great movie. As far as 2009 animated films go, I loved it much more than “Up” just because it’s quirkier. Also an Anderson fan here.

        • Posted on 19 March 2010

Very fun movie. (I don’t see a lot of them, I admit, and a disproportionate number of the ones I do see are kid-friendly.)

          • Posted on 21 March 2010

We’ve a range of movie fans/ages, and Fantastic Mr. Fox was a thumbs-up for every single one. A rarity.

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
Diptyque Philosykos – just got a decant last night from a split and it’s a perfect day for it. So creamy and so green!

Can’t think of good examples for 2 or 3

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?
Real Simple. I actually have used recommendations from it many times, from recipes, gift guides, organizing tips, to makeup recommendations. This month they had a page on Spring fragrances and I was surprised to see Bond No. 9 High Line. That bottle is awesome. Have to head to Saks and see if they have it yet.

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
I guess it was The Hurt Locker – watched it a few weeks before it won all the Oscars.

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

      Love Philosykos :-)

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

Saks does have High Line! I didn’t much care for it- it felt really synthetic- but LOVE the bottle.

        Posted on 19 March 2010

Certainly money saved if it’s no good! I’m finally going to do my own sniffapalooza since I discovered our local mall has a Hermes! Finally I can smell all the Hermessences! I tend to avoid this mall, but it has been getting more and more upscale, adding Louis Vuitton, Burberry, etc and now Hermes. It has a Neiman Marcus and Saks also, so I’ve already made a list of everything I want to try!

        • Julia
          Posted on 21 March 2010

Nice. I wish Neiman’s and Sak’s were in the same mall here. Sak’s is about three blocks from me but Neiman’s is a long drive. To me anyway, it isn’t out of town or anything, I just don’t like to drive much so it is an event for me to make the trip out there. I should see what other stores they have.

  9. boojum
    Posted on 19 March 2010

    What fun! Love these.

    1. None yet, if you can believe it. between splits and samples, 21 new ones hit my stash yesterday, and I just couldn’t decide in the morning rush.

    2. Can’t think of one atm…sure I’ll remember one later though.

    3. By Killian, Straight to Heaven (which I “affectionately” refer to as Straight to H_ _ _ instead).

    4. I don’t read any, though I currently have a subscription to something or other (can’t even remember which).

    5. Drawing a serious blank here…we don’t watch many, and I usually have to compromise with my husband, whose taste isn’t quite the same as mine. Probably Elizabeth: The Golden Age, which was good enough, but not fantastic. I can’t remember the last one that really grabbed me.

    • boojum
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh…and of course, it doesn’t help that I’m bringing in spring frags, and today’s morning temp was 36*… the high for the day. :(

      • Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh that’s terrible. Hope you get some of the warmer spring weather soon. It’s 70 here and such a relief after the winter.

        • boojum
          Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh, we did… it was sunny and in the 60s most of the week. However, now that the ground is bare… it’s supposed to snow this weekend. :/

    • lemonprint
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Ooo, I also thought I would love “Straight to Heaven” – got my sample finally and tried it this week and I also hate it! Sadness.

      • Zazie
        Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh yes! I hear you both on straight to heaven. I had the same issue with a taste of heaven too. The “heavens” must be against me….

        • lemonprint
          Posted on 19 March 2010

I kind of don’t want to try the other “heaven” but of course I will – for completeness if nothing else. :-)

I also didn’t love Beyond Love. I’m worried about Love because of the bubblegum note. Will all my By Killian samples come to naught? More sadness.

    • Joe
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Is Straight to Heaven the absinthe one? I get them so confused (truth is, I never really learned them to begin with). I think I didn’t mind the absinthe one, but there’s no By Kilian I would buy.

      • mjr17
        Posted on 19 March 2010

Taste of Heaven is the absinthe one. I love it. Major lemming for me right now…

      • boojum
        Posted on 19 March 2010

It’s the rum one. I think I also got a sample of the absinthe one, but can’t remember what I thought of it. Maybe I was too afraid to try it after StH. :D

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today? — Several: PG Aomassai, l’Ombre Fauve, Iris Taizo; Ambre Narguile and vintage Guerlain Vetiver. A friend and I want to split a bottle of something and this is part of the research. Most fun!

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it. — vintage Chanel No. 5 edc. There are certain aldehydes I simply can’t stomach, and the ones in No. 5 are full of them. But this was a revelation: not powdery, not stifling, not sour, not weird in any way. In fact, they did just what they theoretically were designed to do: make the other notes sing. It’s gorgeous.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it. — AG Mandragore. I’d hear raves, but it wasn’t for me, unfortunately.

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine? — Utne Reader

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched? — Crazy Heart, because of Jeff Bridge’s win at the AA. I love him, but the movie sounded a bit mainstream and predictable. It was, but his acting WAS absolutely Oscar-worthy. I’d seen A Single Man and had been rooting for Colin Firth as Best Actor, but I’m happy it worked out this way. And I love the fact that Bridges has been happily married for several decades to a woman his age. His acceptance speech which included a warm thanks to her just melted me.

Robin – I know what you mean about vintage No 5. I made peace last year with regular current No 5, but then I got my hands on some really really old vintage No 5 parfum from ebay. It comes out almost liquid gold it is so old – it smells like heaven on earth! I can’t even describe it! I really wish I knew what year it was but I do know it is OLD. When I wear it, it is so beautiful it makes me want to cry!

Happy Friday! It’s close to 70 today in Boston … a nice change from last weekend’s 9 inches of rain.
    1. Cristalle EDP, but it’s worn off …
    2. Dzonghka – I never thought I would like something like this, but I completely adore it.
    3. La Temps D’Une Fete (probably spelled wrong) :-(
    4. Rug Hooking magazine (also Dog Fancy, Cat Fancy and any quilting magazine)
    5. In a theater? Hmmm, “Atonement”, which shows you how often I go to the movies. On DVD: Spies (1927, Fritz Lang). I love old movies.

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Atonement was good though. Not as good as the book, but pretty darned good.

    • monstabunny
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Totally with you on Un Jour de Fete. Peculiar stuff – must be a party I don’t want to be invited to.

      • Robin
        Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh, I thought she meant the Parfums de Nicolai scent? Might be Jour de Fete though.

  12. Posted on 19 March 2010

    1. Because it’s a lovely warm Spring day I’ve been wearing SMN Melograno these past few days.

    2. Lolita Lempicka. I sniffed it at Sephora months ago, found it terribly sweet & never intended to give it another thought. Luckily, Ari at Scents of Self convinced me otherwise.

    3. Caron Narcisse Noir. Now, I don’t truly hate it however it’s not nearly what I was expecting. I do enjoy it on certain days after a number of hours. Somehow I find the opening to have some strange sparkling grape juice accord to it.

    4. I really adore Russian Vogue if only for the pictures. I also tend to read Foreign Policy.

    5. It was probably Inglorious Basterds. I’ve seen a few decent films since then, but really nothing of terrible note — I dunno, I did enjoy Zombieland & Avatar was entertaining enough, but neither were really what I’d call a ‘good’ film.

    • Evil Emma
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh but Zombieland is great if only for the Bill Murray cameo.

      • Posted on 19 March 2010

I loved Zombieland — and was really pleasantly surprised by it — but I don’t know if it’s really what most would consider a ‘good’ film.

The Bill Murray cameo was probably the best thing ever.

      • AnnS
        Posted on 19 March 2010

Ditto here on the Bill Murray cameo – I love him! – it was a really fun movie to watch. And of couse, Woody Harrleson is always fun too.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

I’m sort of with you on Narcisse Noir, Klytaemnestra. I thought it was going to be skankier, but that wasn’t so much of a disappointment to me because it is still pretty dark; just not as full-bodied as I had hoped. The main disappointment came when I learned that dumping a 1 ml. vial all over my wrist could not make the stuff last past four hours.

      • 734elizabeths
        Posted on 22 March 2010

I like Narcisse Noir a lot better when I layer it with Gucci Homme. The combination seems to temper the icky sweetness in NN and bring out its more grown-up aspects.

  13. Dzingnut
    Posted on 19 March 2010

Robin – I have “Valentino – The Last Emperor” on my netflix list. I generally dress like a potato farmer, but any documentary about the “how do they do it?” aspects of the fashion industry fascinate me. I saw one about the ladies who actually created the dresses designed by YSL for his haute couture collection – absolutely riveting.

    • zeezee
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh, but then you also must see Signé Chanel, about the hierarchy -and artistry- behind the scenes at Chanel as they prepare for fashion week.

      • Joe
        Posted on 19 March 2010

And then you can watch one episode of that hideous Bravo program, “Kell on Earth” and realize how repulsive everything that goes into fashion week is. IMHO.

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

I do wish they had spent more time w/ the seamstresses (I’m sure that’s not what they called them), and after Valentino retired, would be cool if they went back to see what happened to them.

  14. zara
    Posted on 19 March 2010

    1. Bulgari Black. I stayed true to an all black cothing ensemble and paired it with Ferrari red nails

    2. Trussardi – Inside (but it was only a brief fling ;) or Kilian – Straight to heaven

    3. Lutens – Douce Amere

    4. can’t decide, really

    5. Up in the air

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Up in the Air is another I want to see. I’m so behind.

      • Robin R.
        Posted on 19 March 2010

I think you’ll like it. George Clooney’s character’s love interest has brains and cojones and she’s in her forties: yay!

  15. Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh my goodness, I’m actually posting before the thread reaches the 300′s! Amazing. ;)

    1. No fume today, sick again. BOO!

    2. Probably Alien. Living in the shadow of Angel, I never wanted to bother with it. Then one day I got a wild hair and now it’s top three.

    3. Aomassai. A super-sweet gourmand, why wouldn’t I love it! But it reeked of camphor and other things that burned my nostrils, and did so for eight hours. I tried it again a few months ago, in an attempt to get it, but it just felt uncomfortable and foreign. I’m keeping the sample, though. ;)

    4. No favorite mag! I’ve tried, but there’s always something that sticks in my craw and makes me wish I wasn’t bound by a subscription.

    5. The last good movie that comes to mind is Whip It, that roller derby movie (seriously) with Ellen Page. Totally made me want to be a roller derby girl. :D

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh, hope you get better soon!

Off to look at Whip It on Netflix, had not heard of it.

      • boojum

I agree with two. Alien is my go-to fragrance. :)

    1. Strawberry Flowers by Fresh (I’m wearing yellow and it smells like strawberry lemonade – yum)

    2. Petite Cherie, AG – had no desire to try it, but my daughter sprayed it in sephora and I’m kind of smitten.

    3. Narcisco Rodriguez for Her, sounded nice – but was very musty on me.

    4. Mental Floss (cover to cover readable)

    5. The new Alice was great. Saw it on vacation last weekend with my daughters. It’s beautiful and the girl-power message was a nice surprise.

    • Zazie
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh, how strange! I was so disappointed by Alice… And it is Tim Burton’s hard core fan speaking! And I adore the old Alice!
But I’m glad you and your daughters liked it, of course ;)

      • boojum
        Posted on 19 March 2010

I’ve heard such mixed reviews, I’m both anxious and afraid to see it. Love Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, am an Alice collector (even my screen name comes from Carroll)… so it *should* be perfect. Which leaves much room for it to be horrible. :O

        • rbrown
          Posted on 19 March 2010

I went in with the lowest of expectations, maybe that helped? The saving grace of the movie (I thought) was that it wasn’t trying to tell the original story – just a Burton version of what-could-have-happened-after. I thought Depp was going to be cheese-tastic and over the top like in Willie Wonka, but his hatter was so endearingly sad and sweet. Anne Hathaway was the only disappointment really, and I usual like her.
Have a glass of wine or two with dinner and go check it out now that the crowds have died down.

          • boojum
            Posted on 19 March 2010

Yes, that was what made me think it *could* be good… that it was a “what happened next” instead of a retelling. There was just nowhere for them to go with Wonka…Gene Wilder was too perfect. It was either imitate, or fall flat (though I did like that some aspects were truer to the book than in the GW version).

    • jbsundries
      Posted on 19 March 2010

R, I agree with you– such great girl power! And I love Tim Burton.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

      Which Sephora has Annick Goutal???
I enjoyed AiW a lot more than I thought I would, primarily for that delightful girl-power message. I do think that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton need to take a little break from each other, though… they are going to get stuck in one hell of a rut.

A fragrance that reminds me of pink lemonade was Lily by Calypso St. Barth. Uncanny.

  17. Posted on 19 March 2010

    1) SOTD is Annick Goutal Eau du Ciel. Lovely greens+violet & linden. Earlier I had Apres l’Ondee on, but it was just not right for some reason – probably the sunshine.

    2) If you’d told me the notes for Hanae Mori before I tested it, I wouldn’t have gotten it anywhere near my skin. I still don’t wear it, but I really love to smell it.

    3) Thought I’d adore La Chasse aux Papillons… but didn’t. After the lovely juicy-fresh opening, it goes all toilet cleaner. Bleaurgh.

    4) Don’t read many magazines, but I really enjoy Smithsonian.

    5) When Harry Met Sally was on the other night – I’d forgotten how good that one is. “I’ll have what she’s having.”

That’s one I like on other people. My kid’s best friend’s mom wears it, and I followed after her one day to ask what it was, it smelled so good. Not on me, alas.

I always want to like HM, but it always smells like pink bubble-gum to me.

      • Posted on 19 March 2010

I know! It’s sooo not me. I have two edp sample sprays – big ones, prob. 2ml each, and I’ll never need any more. It is total berry-vanilla foolishness, as ridiculous as eating a whole package of blue cotton candy all by myself, but so much FUN. I don’t wear it anywhere, though.

I’m with Mals on just wanting to smell it. I like spraying Hanae Mori on something and just inhaling the top notes. The pink wrap that induced me to buy it as a gift with purchase is perfect for that use.

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
    Chanel Sycomore which I adore

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it.
Bandit. I don’t usually do green and on paper Fracas or Baghari are more my kind of thing but Bandit was passion at first sniff.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
Ubar. It’s a floral from Amouage, it sounded perfect. But it’s so so bright and it turned out to be a complete migraine-inducing scrubber.

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?
I read few magazines. I subscribe to one or two specialist knowledge ones and the only magazines that I buy from time to time are Vogue and New Scientist.

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
An Education. I’m curious about that Valentino film, it sounds like it would be in a similar vein to September Issue which I enjoyed.

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Wonder if you would have liked the original Ubar better? It wasn’t quite as bright. Or strong.

    • AnnS
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Abyss – I normally like big orientals, but Ubar was like Godzilla on Tokyo for me!

      • Posted on 19 March 2010

It was rather quiet on me – at least, I think so. (Dabbing, always.)

I have this vague theory that there are people whose skins “eat up” big white florals like tuberose so that those scents are not so rude. I have a further vague theory that I’m one of those people with White Floral Damping Effect skin.

Possible, of course, that I have a White Floral Damping Effect nose instead. Or maybe that many people (excluding me) have a sensitivity to white florals the way I do patchouli, where even a little feels very loud.

        • boojum
          Posted on 20 March 2010

I tend to test out those theories by making my family members sniff things on me… especially if something “wears off” in less than 8 hours. Since almost nothing does, I worry that I just become immune to it and might wear too much. Fortunately, so far it seems to be my skin rather than my nose.

    1. Harajuku Lovers G. It’s creamy and beachy and reminds me of being on vacation, which I’d like to be right now.

    2. YSL Parisienne. I thought it would be bland and generic and I’d forget about it immediately, but it’s been one of my go-to scents for the past several months.

    3. Havana Vanille. I was so looking forward to it, but it’s like the emperor’s new clothes of perfume for me — I can’t smell much in it other than a tiny bit of rum.

    4. I am always trying to eliminate magazines from my life, but I do have a subscription to The Sun and I really like it.

    5. “Grey Gardens” — the original documentary, not the HBO movie. I am addicted to it!

    2. Nothing’s occurring to me on this one, because I’m still formulating what I’m pretty sure I will like or dislike. I was surprised at how much I loved Annick Goutal’s Duel, and bought a bottle despite two men very close to me both hating it. :-)

    3. Infusion d’iris. I love the SOUND of all the iris perfumes but I always end up… well, not liking them!

    4. New York Magazine. Not the New Yorker, the trashier one. :-) Or O Magazine. Boy, this is embarassing.

    1. Atelier Cologne Trèfle Pur – I doused myself in celebration of the sunny, no clouds, 70 degree weather we are having today. This a very very green, bright, and tart citrus followed by a blast of fig (or violet?) leaf and new Spring grass and later a green woodsy dry down. Perfect!!

    2. Angel. I so thought I would hate this. And then I tried it. I was surprised at how much it intrigued me. And it sparked a new curiosity in the more gourmand-y genre of fragrances, which I always thought I despised because I don’t like food-scented things.

    3. Bois des Iles, sadly. I want to love this, or even *like* it, but it’s way to sweet and nutty for me (which again, triggers my food-smell sensitivity). I told myself I will keep trying…I’m convinced my nose is still *learning*.

    4. Oh this is a toss up among several, but I’d have to say the magazine I most like to “indulge” in is The New York Magazine. There’s something in there for all my moods.

    5. A Single Man. I *loved* it and *hated* it – which to me indicates its success as a work of art. Colin Firth was simply marvelous.

    • Zazie
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Bois des iles was also my choice for number three above! But I do not gat any nutty sweetness: I just get LOADS of soapy aldehydes. Where is the sandalwood? The gingerbread? For me it is just so very clean and polished. I wear it to annoying work meetings, when I have to dress smart and smell chanellexpensive. Yes it is one word!! ;)

      • mjr17
        Posted on 19 March 2010

Hmmm i know you can’t smell it, but maybe it’s the gingerbread that is aggravating my nose. There is just something in there that is way too sweet for me.

M & Z: I’m pretty much with you on BdI. I keep meaning to pull it out again, but the first couple times I sampled it it was just kind of a perfumey aldehydic thing. Oh well.

        Posted on 19 March 2010

Zazie – I’ve retested BdI about 10 times, and I still don’t get it. I can smell that it is a “good” woody fragrance, but it just smells so flat to me. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about. You are in good company!

I don’t get nutty and sweet from BdI, but I do get it from Sycomore. I can’t make up my mind about that one. I like it a lot, but the sweetness sometimes gets to me.

      • mjr17
        Posted on 19 March 2010

I was recently disappointed in a young man at Sephora who came in for Black Orchid because he had been wearing some from a friend and loved it, but when he found out is was a “perfume” he backed out. Perfume is for girls (and it was in the girls section), cologne is for men. 1. White Ginger EDT from Key West Aloe. It’s nothing fancy, but it smells just like Coppertone on me and I wear it anytime I want to protest winter.

    2. David Yurman. It’s actually what brought me to this site. I won a bottle from Allure magazine a couple of years ago and was searching for information because I was thinking about exchanging it for something else. I decided to keep it and it’s now my signature scent. I love how it changes throughout the day (I’ve counted 11 so far), that no one else I know wears it, and it introduced me to NST, Chandler Burr, Luca Turin (even though he hates DY), and others. I finally have a hobby that I’m passionate about!

    3. Angel. So highly rated, popular, and available. Smells like garbage on me.

    4. It’s a toss up. Allure is my bible and they give away free beauty products every month. But I also love Conde Nast Traveler. I’m always dreaming about being somewhere else.

    5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It’s on HBO almost every weekend and I end up watching it almost every weekend – and it’s still funny. However, I recently saw P.S. I Love You. That is a great story. I like reading about what brings people to perfumes and how it becomes a hobby/obsession/lifestyle. What makes someone a perfumista? What is it that urges us to take in another dozen samples even though we may already have dozens of scents yet to try and probably enough perfume in our possession to last the rest of our lives? Now, I’m off to order decants of the Chanel Exclusifs since I fell in love with the Coromandel someone sent me a couple of weeks ago.

    1. Le Labo Iris 36… seemed like a good in-between scent for a day that starts at 40 degrees and peaks at 71 degrees.
    2. Angel, the description sounded like it would be sickly sweet, but I love it (in tiny doses).
    3. Havana Vanille. I was so excited about this one but it smells rather flat on me.
    4. I like online magazines… Slate might be a favorite, also Vanity Fair.
    5. Ponyo! I love Ponyo. Tomorrow I get to see “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and I am beyond thrilled about that.

Fun poll, I’m enjoying everyone’s answers.

Watched Ponyo last week – that was an odd one. I do love Miyazaki and I guess nothing will ever be as good as Totoro for me. The ham stuff was great though!

I wanna see Ponyo!!! Castle in the Sky is one of my all-time favorite movies, and Ponyo looked so darn cute. I love that Tina Fey is in it, too.

    1. Today I’m wearing Andy Tauer un Rose Chypre.
    2. The perfumes I thought I wouldn’t like, I haven’t liked. I can’t think of one that I ended up loving.
    3. I thought I would really like SL’s Fille en Aiquilles but hated it.
    4. My favorite magazine is Vanity Fair.
    5. Last good movie I watched was “Coco Before Chanel”.

    1. O de Lancome (a very nice unisex fragrance that’s perfect for a warm day (like it is today here in San Diego, California).
    2. A*Men. I’m usually not a big fan of candy-ish fragrances, but this one wore very well on me (use it lightly and only in the evening when I choose to wear it).
    3. YSL Pour Homme Haute Concentration. The original 1971 Pour Homme is BEAUTIFUL. However, the 1983 introduction of the Concentrate only appeared to smell beautiful on paper and from the bottle sprayer. On my skin, it seemed to metamorphose into some chemical peel solution. Awful.
    4. Cooking with Paula Deen. Man, that woman can COOK!!!! (unlike 90% of the other so-called cooking mag-rags and “chefs” out there). Her recipes are the best.
    5. Breakfast At Tiffany’s (own a DVD copy). Have the original soundtrack to it…the Henry Mancini music is oh, soooo early ’60′s and reminds me of those days growing up and hearing this kind of music (along with the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim (Brazilian jazz), in our home in Atlanta.

    1. Body Time Egyptian Musk since I had a meeting this morning and didn’t want to overwhelm anyone.

    2. The CEO loves Ciara, and I remember spraying a wee bit on my wrist ages ago and reeling from the smell. I recently tested it again given my ever-expanding love of classics and curiousity concerning frags gone by (even if some of them get a bad rap) and fell in love with it. There’s a really vintage feel about it, but I wasn’t more than a twinkle in my mother’s eye when it came out so I don’t have any unpleasant associations. I bought it in the full strength and love the blend of spices and vanilla.

    3. Daphne by CDG. I had never actually gotten nauseous from simply smelling a fragrance before, but there’s something in there that really turned my stomach when I sampled it on my skin. I was soo disappointed because I wanted to love it. I have a little decant of it and don’t think I’ll ever test it again. It just didn’t work on me, poor lil thing. :(

    4. We get nature mags for the kids but I do most of my article reading online.

    5. Precious. Gabourey Sidibe is a great actress and did a fine job with the role. And she’s such a ray of sunshine during her interviews that I think she’s got a great career ahead of her.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh! Daphne is my number three, too! It just sounded so good. But on me, WAY too sweet and it just didn’t hang together. :-(

    1. Roger & Gallet’s Bouquet Imperiale layered with Jo Malone’s Cedar and Lime body oil-it’s a warm sunny day in SF (finally!!).

    2. Lanvin’s Eclat d’Arpège. Very pretty floral with woods, not overpowering but excellent staying power. I was totally surprised to like it.

3.Annik Goutal’s Songes. Absolute swamp water on me. And Tom Ford’s White Suede.

    4. Gourmet-I LOVE food/cooking shoes and mags..

    5. Pan’s Labyrinth, in current movies-the Blind Side or Julie & Julia.

    • odonata9
      Posted on 19 March 2010

I also love Eclat d’Arpege. And it can be found so cheaply online – I only have a mini now, but once that gets used up, I’ll be getting a full bottle.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

You’re so brave! I couldn’t make it through Pan’s Labyrinth. It was so brutal.

      • Posted on 19 March 2010

Oh, I agree! It’s so achingly beautiful and the score so haunting, but yeah, I was on the edge of my seat anticipating having to cover my eyes….
Also, there is something about Guillermo del Toro’s brand of fantasy that is sad, hard to watch. I thought it was just Pan’s Labyrinth, but I got the same feel watching Hellboy 2.

    2. Can’t think of an individual perfume, but I thought I hated powder in fragrances. Turns out I don’t; in fact, I kind of love it.
    3. A*men. I keep thinking that I should like it and re-trying it, but that citrusy lavender opening just reads as urinous to my nose and I can’t get past it.

LOVE to read what everyone is writing!

    1. today is the maiden voyage of my vintage Diorissimo EDP — I sprayed it on this morning & actually got a little misty-eyed. it is so beautiful. the dry down is tender.

    2. Guerlain Samsara — I thought I hated spicy orientals, esp. loud!

    3. I love musks, so I thought I’d love Frederic Malle’s musc ravageur. Hate it & have FB. the top is too harsh for me & the drydown to ambery-sweet. (give me my cheap Kiehl’s any day)

    1. SOTD – 31 Rue Cambon. Not very spring-like, but it’s working. Almost sprayed Chamade instead, but am wearing a brown long-sleeved T-shirt, and Chamade just doesn’t seem like a brown scent!

    2. Thought I would hate – Mitsouko, but it’s growing on me. The oakmoss thing reminds me too much of my mom, who’s worn Y for decades. I love my mom, but don’t want to smell like her! So, I wouldn’t call it “love” yet, but some day maybe?

    3. Thought I would love – Maharanih, CDG 2, Amaranthine, to name a few. I can think of so many more scents in this category than in the above (#2). Probably because I typically anticipate positive reactions to scents rather than negative, then get disappointed when I don’t like it or when it’s not what I expect. Seems to happen quite often! So often, actually, that when I find something I really love, it’s a great relief!!!

    4. Vogue, InStyle, Elle, any no-mind mag that helps me relax and not think about anything serious.

    5. Notorious. Grant and Bergman. Awesome film.

Ari- not sure if you’re joking, but I really did like the “other” Notorious movie! Biggie is one of my favorite rappers (yes, I love hip-hop, and pretty much all other kinds of music too). That actor who played him bears an uncanny resemblance.

    1) The temp. broke 60 degrees today so out came PdN Eau d’Ete, naturally…

    2) VC&A Orchidee Vanille – it’s really just too, too, TOO sweet. So why do I wear it so often?

    3) Hermes Kelly Caleche. (sigh)

    4) The Economist

    5) Cold River. I actually almost walked out of this one. Twice. I am so glad I braved it out because it’s magnificent.

    1. SOTD- AA Pampelune. It just seemed like a good perfume for a casual Friday at the office. Gets me moving and out the door.
    2. Sure I would hate. Hermes Eau Gentiane Blanche. Normally I really don’t like iris fragrances but I looooove this!
    3. Sure I would love. Sous le Vent. I generally love chypres but SlV was astringent with aggressive notes of oakmoss, galbanum and bitter citrus that I personally found to be very off-putting and scrubbed it off as soon as I could find the kitchen sponge.
    4. Favorite Magazine. I love Tatler from the UK.
    5. Last good movie. I thought Ratatouille was pretty cute. (I am not much of a movie-watcher. Thought “Up in the Air” w/ George Clooney was tedious. )

    6. Hmm… I don’t know – I don’t watch that many movies any more.

    Posted on 19 March 2010

    1. PG Cuir d’Iris… SO good! (mostly leather, not noticeably iris)

    2. I’m really so open minded that I don’t assume I’ll hate anything except … trendy cheap fruity floral recent launches. And I can’t think of any I’ve tried let alone loved (I don’t do much dept store testing). This is a tough category and I’m coming up blank.

    3. Thought I’d LOVE Havana Vanille and salivated with everyone else prior to its launch but… I wouldn’t say I absolutely hate it, but it’s sure not me, and there are at least 5 vanillas I own decants or bottles of and love much much more. (Also with Klytemnaestra on Narcisse Noir: thought I’d love it but to me it’s SUPER soapy. Sad.)

    4. I don’t do print magazines much anymore, but on a long plane ride I know I can hunker down with The Economist for hours (and it’s not as dry/boring as it sounds).

    5. Last good movie was a DVD: VERY low budget docu-drama about a nursing home called “Assisted Living.” Last GREAT movie was “The Beaches of Agnès,” a documentary-autobiographical film about French artist & filmmaker Agnès Varda. Amazing.

    • Joe
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Zara above reminded me. For #2, I’d say I either thought I’d hate Douce Amere or wouldn’t care much about it (meh… anise). But when it dries down after about 15 minutes it is really beautiful. I would definitely wear it.

        Posted on 20 March 2010

I had such high hopes for HV too- I don’t like sweet vanilla, but I thought it would be that boozy, tobacco-y, hazy dark vanilla I’ve been hoping for. I’ve come to realize that my skin is cursed to bring out the sweet vanilla in every scent, every time. :(

        • boojum
          Posted on 20 March 2010

Hrm, maybe if you layer it with something dry… I keep trying to find the right dry ‘fume for that same purpose. HV wasn’t awful on me, and I do like it, but it sounded like true love, and wasn’t.

        • ScentRed
          Posted on 20 March 2010

I have the same phenomena with vanilla scents. I tried HV and thought it was OK, but trended a bit too sweet. I felt compelled to spritz a bit of uber dry AG Eau de Sud and voila! It worked.

I’m sure there are HV lovers cursing this suggestion, but it worked for me ;-)

        • Posted on 20 March 2010

I get sweet from it too, particularly in the drydown. What saves it for me is that it’s CLEAR, not milky – like vanilla liqueur – and very intense. It goes all the way across the line to Too Much, and I find myself really digging that.

Plus, the vanilla is fabbo with tuberose. Who knew?

        • Julia
          Posted on 21 March 2010

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is that dark vanilla for me, booze and tobacco, with a strong honey note to me. That might make it too sweet, but it is what I wanted Havana Vanille to be. It is strong and lasts all day and night. Actually , I don’t know it I could wear it for day unless I dabbed just the tiniest bit.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

I thought that I’d love NN as well, my being a narcissus ho as well as a rose ho and a green floral ho… Nope. No, it was soapy orange blossom with no narcissus at all. Turns out I had a sample of the reformulation, which I categorically deem a disaster (pour moi, anyway).

    Posted on 19 March 2010

    1) Annick Goutal Songes – lovely for a spring day in beautiful Florida!

    2) Mmmmm… I can’t think of one either!

    3) Bulgari Black – My skin just brings out the vanilla, so its pretty boring on me. I’m not that big on vanilla.

    4) Toss up between W, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar. But I also like Elle and Vogue.

    5) The Dead Girl. The only movie I’ve seen with Brittany Murphy in it that is worth watching (besides Clueless which I unabashedly love) & it is a fascinating movie. Also has Toni Colette, Marcia Gay Harden, Kerri Washington, Josh Brolin, etc. Highly recommended. Played recently on IFC (or maybe Sundance – one of the two channels).

Robin- I recently watched Valentino, The Last Emperor too! I love Valentino’s gowns- he’s a real artist, but the movie was a totally crazy portrait of him as a person. The relationship between him and Giancarlo Giametti is just crazy.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

k-scott, you’re so lucky! All I get out of Black is rubber, rubber, and oh yeah, rubber. I would love for a little vanilla to soften it up. And it’s a shame- Brittany Murphy really did seem to be a very promising actress, I often wonder why her career went the way it did.

      • boojum
        Posted on 19 March 2010

And I just get a typical yawner tea scent. At least it’s wearable for me, though; it just isn’t anything special.

      • k-scott
        Posted on 19 March 2010

And of course Ari, I think you’re lucky because you can smell more than just 2 minutes of the rubber! (It reminds me of how girls with curly hair wish they had straight, and vice versa.) But que sera, sera, eh? It continue to be amazed at how much one’s skin factors into the true smell of a fragrance.

    • Robin
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Now I’m curious — why did you think that relationship was crazy? To me, it was the only really human part of the movie. Everything else about that whole world seemed crazy to me.

      • k-scott
        Posted on 19 March 2010

Robin- on the one hand I really did admire that Valentino and Giametti have been together for so long and are obviously a dynamic and creative duo. But to me Valentino seemed to be highly critical of Giametti without showing appreciation for the hard work he quite obviously did for the Valentino brand. Perhaps Valentino is very appreciative in their private lives but in the movie he came across just like a petulant child who was reluctant to relinquish control or credit to his partner, who seemed very deserving of such a concession. Maybe I read too much into it?

        • Robin
          Posted on 20 March 2010

Oh, I’d agree with that — V was the petulant child, and G “managed” him. But I know lots of relationships like that! And they did seem to love each other. Absolutely everything else in the movie seemed so entirely artficial.

    3. OTOH, these are too many to count. Recently: 10 Corso Como. I love Tam Dao so I figured this’d be love too, but it’s nauseating, cloying and awful.

            Posted on 20 March 2010

B, don’t beltive the two are so different: I have an old bottle and very recent samples(and not counting my frequent visits to the shop) and CC10 has always been (almost basic) spicy sandalwood, i.e. There are no major differences in the final effect. Sometimes people like to make a little drama out of the reformulation issue, but if you don’t like CC now, you won’t like the old one!!

    2. For sure I would hate AT’s Vetivir Dance and it turned out to be so strangely beautiful that I adore it. My St. Patrick’s Dat SOTD.
    3. Lots! But my SOTD is about to change tunes. I thought it would be perfect (roses and geranium) and ended up hating it when I sampled it. I decided to give it another shot today and I think I might like it – a lot – after all!
    4. Opera News!
    5. Julie and Julia – pay per view. All Hail Queen Meryl!

I have a follow up for last week on my ordering blind, MH’s Jasmin Vert. Good news – It’s gorgeous! Pretty with a capital “P” and Floral with a capital “F.” This is a ladylike scent for the lady who dresses for a walk in the park and who enjoys taking tea. Harkens back to a different era for sure. I imagine (sorry for the opera example) Angela Georgiu at the end of Act 1 of Puccini’s La Rondine, dressed in a lovely yellow chiffon dress, t-strapped shoes, and a hat, going out in search for love and adventure, full of hope and anticipation. Just Lovely!

Hi Mals, it was an ebay purchase, a tester bottle.
I’d be happy to send you a few drops to try. I have an MUA account although I’ve never used it. If you want you may contact me. I’m “annymack” over there.

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it. Euphoria

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it. Kenzo Amour

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched? Grand Torino

I thought Kenzo Amour was a huge disappointment too. The “rice steam” smells more like baby spit-up to me.

    1. Mitsouko EDT
    2. The “leather” category, which I fell in love with after I tried Azuree – now I own several leather fragrances!
    3. This would be the whole category “soliflore”.
    4. Don’t really read magazines (outside the doctor’s or dentist’s office)
    5. “Exit Smiling”, Beatrice Lillie’s first film (a silent from 1926)

So you do like florals, just not soliflores?

      • fleurdelys
        Posted on 22 March 2010

Yes. Though my favorites usually lie in the oriental category, I like florals as long as they have a bit of an edge to them – a bracing chypre or animalic note.

    1. Angel Pure Coffee for Men
    2. Can’t think of any.
    3. L’Artisan L’Eau du Navigateur and Norma Kamali Incense were pure musty- ness, and Soivohle Underworld- well I don’t really hate it but it’s cocoa/ soft jasmine & rose on me not some dark earthy creature worthy of cult adoration. Is it just me or do most of Soivhole’s vetiver’s seem to have a cocoa wang in them.
    4. Don’t really read magazines, I flip through fashion mags at the grocery store and book store.
    5. I haven’t seen any good movies lately, but I did recently discover Six Feet Under on netflix and I rented all 5 seasons consecutively. It’s a dark, but often comical show about a family owned funereal home. All the characters are dynamic and multidimensional but I really love Claire bad attitude and all. That she’s a total mess, hopelessly naïve, fiercely outspoken, promiscuous yet vulnerable. I love she’s a beautiful curvy, pale redhead instead of a blond waif. I loved her/ the actress Lauren Ambrose in Psycho Beach Party too.

“Six Feet Under” has to be one of my favorite shows ever!

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

      LOVED Six Feet Under!

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

I love SFU as well (have the DVD box set!), though gosh, by the end, I despised Nate…which was tough because I loved his character so much for the first couple of seasons.

      • Jill
        Posted on 19 March 2010

I felt the same way about Nate — he was my favorite character in the first couple of seasons, but I could barely stand him by the end.

            Posted on 19 March 2010

Another long time SFU fan here. It is crazy how at first in the show you think Brenda is horrible and you feel bad for Nate; at the end of the show it’s vice versa. The finale of the show is kick ass.

        • Posted on 20 March 2010

Agreed. And the show got just a bit TOO dark for me as it went on. Still a great one, though!

and what I meant by that , but being half asleep only typed about half a sentence, was that if you tell me where to send it, I can get a sample to you. To me it smells like sweetened coffee. I like to sniff it, not necessarily wear it….although lots of people do. And it’s not particularly masculine even though it’s marketed to men.

            Posted on 20 March 2010

Ari, I find Angel Men Coffee to be a soft cozy vanilla/ caramel lavender with just a whee hint of coffee. But I’m picky when it comes to coffee frags, haven’t find my java HG yet. Still need to try Ayala Moriel Finjan (turkish spiced coffee w/ roses) and CBIHP Macadamia Coffee. But take Daisy up on that offer for a samp.

    2. Until recently, I was sure that Pour Un Homme wouldn’t be worth trying, along with Jicky, Gris Clair, and all other lavender-based fragrances, because I don’t like lavender. Well, that was sure silly of me, wasn’t it?!
    3. Daphne (see my response to Absolute Scentualist).
    4. I like Saveur and Sunset magazines.

    3. Nina by Nina Ricci (the new one). I love apples and musk, but the cotton musk in Nina made me smell like rotten apples, or past due apple cider.

    1. Elixir des Merveilles

    2. Shalimar – For years I disliked it because it smelled like “old ladies” and “powder” (I’ve grown as a person since then). I always wanted a bottle because my street is named Shalimar Drive but I just didn’t like it. Along comes NST, my nose becomes a little more developed, and now it is my HGP – now and forever. The first time I spent over $100 on a bottle of perfume was the tiny quarter ounce Shalimar extrait.

    3. Santal de Mysore. I really, really thought it would be perfect for me based on reviews and smelling it on my friend, but it is pure sweaty cumin. At least I only purchased a 2.5ml sample.

    4. We take National Geographic and Surfer’s Journal. Beautiful photography in both, great articles in NG.

    5. I’ve been married 15 years and my husband has taken me to the movies three times (once when we were dating). Two of those times were on my birthday so he had to. I did watch Precious on pay per view last week.

        • Julia
          Posted on 20 March 2010

What a good idea, Boo. I’ve seen and read too many stories about people dying alone surrounded by stacks of National Geographic. My MIL kept a subscription for my husband for years and we let it lapse after she died. Then it started coming again! Maybe it is Cele from beyond the grave or maybe one of his aunts took over the tradition and forgot to tell us (most likely), but it seems we can’t get away from them. It is a beautiful magazine, though. Still made on the thick, glossy paper, still has the posters inside, still very valuable as a homework tool even though everything is available online now.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

Julia, I am starting to gain an appreciation for Shalimar as well. I bought a bottle of the EDC at Filene’s Basement and found it luscious, especially compared to the rather sad current EDT formulation.

      • Posted on 20 March 2010

Isn’t the EDC great? I started with that, and now I’m on to two bottles of the parfum (I confess I’m hoarding). Nothing in-between works for me, but at this point I could about drink the extrait.

      • Julia
        Posted on 20 March 2010

Yay! Two more Shalimar lovers. I also have several bottles of extrait, new and vintage, and I just love it. I have it in all forms and use the EdT and EdC on my sheets and pillowcases. It has become so associated with sleep for me I’m surprised I can wear it during the day and still stay awake. I keep a travel EdP in my purse (along with a bunch of other samples) and gave the sweet woman at L’Occitaine a little sampler of perfumes and she loved the Shalimar. She thought it smelled “familiar” but is planning on wearing it today. She told me she didn’t know much about fragrance when I went in so I told her a little about fragrance families, too. She is off today and hopefully reading this site now!

Well hope its better than the ‘Basenotes Magazine’! I took out a subscription to that last August, never received anything, saw all the funny (wierd) stuff on the website, sent emails THEN put in a complaint to Paypal and miraculously one issue turned up – and then nothing since, so what’s that? eight months 44US$ worth…anyway, this mention of a perfume magazine reminded me that I was going to put this out there about Basenotes and hopefully if others come out they will be better.
Actually, subscribing to something like this was the first time I had broken the no-subscribe rule!

Winifrieda, I was being a bit facetious about the Perfumed Times, hoping Robin would see it as a future career move:). That’s terrible about Basenotes-glad you mentioned it and hope others pop in here with some comments. I no longer subscribe to anything as I’m a former magazine junkie–yes, even People, Tatler, all the gossip rags.

        • Posted on 20 March 2010

Yes mb also a magazine junkie…apparently Australia has/had the highest per-capital consumption of magazines in the world (although I’ve heard that the world trend is in severe decline).
I’ve seen so many come and go that I’ve never risked a subscription…an indication of my perfume mania that I was willing to risk one to Basenotes!!
I buy a couple of Horse mags regularly and still after all these years Vogue, but if I need to fill in time will go into newsagents and load up on about 50 bucks worth!
The internet must be sorely taxing the print media, even I jumped on the net first thing this morning to see what had happened when the cyclone (hurricane) crossed the coast up north last night.

Eau Noire by Dior, I obsessed about Eau Noire by Dior for a year and when I finally got it, I cannot stomach it! Oddly I like the top notes (curry) which everyone hates. But I hate the drydown which others love! On me, the drydown smells of what you find in the lawnmower 2 days later.
Guerlain Bois d’Armenie: I also obsessed with it many times at the Guerlain boutique in Paris. I would go nack and forth, and finally picked it up at Berdorf Goodman. I just cannot wear it! The ingredients are so rich, It’s like a mixture of oil, candle wax and incense from the floor of a cathedral right there on my neck all day. Not good with a suit!
    4) Last movie: Amreeka, about a Palestinian family from the West Bank who imigrates to the US. Not very deep, but it was the most interesting choice on the plane!

    1. I started with Ninfeo Mio, spritzed some Eau du Coq after the gym shower, and am now cozy at home with Parfum

    2. Tom Ford Grey Vetiver: I don’t know why, it just sounds so boring, but I really like it.

    3. Skaarb–ugh!

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
    TDC Osmanthus.

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it.
    Envy.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
AG La Violette. I love violets, and one of my favorite frags is Bois de Violette, and I longed for a good soliflore. Gack! On my skin, I got, of course, the huge candy violet opening, and then…more candied violet, and on and on and on ad nauseum. I never did get a simple bouquet of fresh violets culled still dripping from the dewy morning shadows. Anyone know of something like that?

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?
    Allure, I confess. (blush)

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
A PROPHET. It just came out. Exceptionally violent French film that just astounded me – I had the same reaction as the first time I saw The Godfather. A great and shattering saga, superior filmmaking, should have won the Oscar instead of the Argentinian one (though that was good, too).

Let me add, though, that the best non-shattering movie I saw recently was THE FANTASTIC MISTER FOX. And my favorite movie of the past 20 years is IMPROMPTU.

      Posted on 19 March 2010

Monstabunny, TDC Osmanthus is so remarkable. I find it’s one of the few scents I can wear at any time of the year when I want something clean but not boring. Penhaligon’s Violetta is worth sampling if you haven’t already. I love vintage Balenciaga Le Dix, but it’s a leather violet.

    • AnnS
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Smelling La Violette is like having my eyes gouged out and an ice pick shoved into my temples! I have no idea why it is so painful for me to smell, as I like other violets. Who knows, but I am right there with you. Vile stuff.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

Violets are a little difficult for me, since I typically get either a) powdery gack or b) candy. Two violet soliflores that DID work, though, were the AG that went way sweet on you (was only mildly sweet on me) and Penhaligon’s Violetta – there’s more leaf in that, and it was even nicer than the AG. You could try Caron’s Violette Precieuse, which IIRC was more green – it didn’t work at all for me, it was sour.

    1. Today I’m wearing AG Ninfeo Mio on one wrist and Philosykos on the other. Testing, comparing.

    2. This hasn’t happened yet. But this did: for some inexplicable reason I let a SA spray me with a scent I didn’t know anything about. I fell in love with it (fortunately): Diptique L’eau des Hesperides.

    3. I thought I would like the Angel Ligueur de Parfum but it was just too much (and I like Angel).

    4. I liked Gourmet. Sometimes I’d read it cover-to-cover. R.I.P. I love it when someone gives me back issues of The New Yorker.

    5. Movie: “The Rape of Europa” (on Netflix, instantly). I couldn’t quit thinking about it so a few days later I watched it again. It’s about how the Nazis stole art from European museums and how ordinary people helped save their national treasures. Like any great documentary, however, it’s about a lot more than that.

1.) POTD: I’m wearing Private Collection. I’ve been wearing ambery/spicy lately and I wanted a change.

2.) Accidently Smitten: I haven’t tried anything I thought I would hate, oddly. Guess I’m not that adventurous or I mostly like everything I try.

3.) Surprisingly Hate: Le Feu d’Issey sounded divine – but it smells like pimentos and dirt on me – no vanilla, no rose. Bleh.

4.) Movie: Frida. I’m on a Frida Kahlo kick again (last time there wasn’t as much available to read, but now stuff is starting to come out from the Museum Frida Kahlo opening up her dressing room/bath which was sealed for 50 years on the request of Diego Rivera upon her death. Her clothing is being restored and there’s a wonderful book about that process and the anthropology of the Mexican clothing she wore. Fascinating.) The movie is just so good and truly does her justice, I think.

Well tomorrow is the day – happy Spring everyone! I’ve had such a crazy week, but wanted to participate in this while I have a minute.

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today? Chanel Coco.

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it. The new Chloe. I don’t love it, but I didn’t hate it. Can’t think of one I expected to hate, but love instead.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it. Well, I definitely don’t hate it, and I love to smell it, but can’t wear it. Coromandel. I really did think it would be perfect for me but it’s too masculine for me to enjoy wearing it.

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine? It’s between House Beautiful, Elle Decor and Martha Stewart Living.

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched? Hurt Locker.

I look forward to reading everyone’s responses later!

Yes Rd I believe the seasons change on the equinox/solstice too!
Perfume-wise I am finding the autumn transition not as ‘easy’ as the spring transition…I go to the shelves and just stand there not being able to make up my mind!
Am thinking the almonds/loukhoums/dried fruities like Chaos and Arabie…
      Chaos was SOD
      I should hate Angel
      I should love Bandit
The Horse, Vogue (although the clandestine advertising of cigarettes in there never fails to make me swear to never buy it again – after about 30 years!)
Movies, hmmmm, I regularly see movies, but invariably find modern Hollywood stuff enjoyable but somehow disappointing and I’m sitting here stumped to even remember a great one recently…but that’s just me, live in the country and only get blockbusters at the theatre and absolute rubbish in the video store!

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it.
    >Burberry London. I initially it smelled too mature for me but I loved it esp during the Christmas Season

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
    > Any variant of the SF Incanto. It smelled perfect on my friend but when I tried it ’twas like “blah. What was i thinking?”

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?
    > Not really into magazines, I pretty much read anything that’s available in the salon when Im having my hair done. I’m more into books – I am currently on Haruki Murakami – just finished Sputnik Sweetheart. =)

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
    > Oh my. Movies. I don’t really watch movies that much (you get weird stares here if you go to the movies alone) But at home, I’ve finished watching some Anime series – Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl). I also saw Spirited Away & Ponyo by the Cliff on the Sea

( I don’t want to come across as aggressive, just that I cannot stand that kind of judgment over innocent things)

    4. Africa Geographic. Wonderful photography.
    5. How I envy all of you who live near theatres that show more than top 10 movies. Our 16-plex will show 4 movies on 4 screens. So we never get to see anything that isn’t completely mainstream. Thank heaven for Netflix! Like Haunini, we’ve been watching the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

    2. can’t think of anything I actively said “uh-uh, no way” because I’m usually game for anything! I’m “optimistic!”
    3. too many to list! I was prepared to adore Profumum Confetto because I’m on an almond hunt…but this fell completely flat….the good news is that in spite of the many samples I bought and didn’t like—a kind swapper sent me a sample of Mazzolari Alessandro and I fell in LURVE. Oh, and Papyrus de Ciane sounded so glorious—I bought a bottle unsniffed…..well, again there’s good news—so many people wanted 5 or 10ml that the entire bottle got portioned out to good homes.
    4. Beadstyle Magazine….because I’m a jewelry maker. I’ve given up all other mags. –there’s just no time!
    5. ah well, pet peeve territory here—I don’t go to the movies because so many people feel compelled to gorge themselves on all manner of smelly, noisy foods while watching and I find that a vile behavior. Since smashing someone’s face into a 5 gallon vat of cheesy-chili-fries is considered assault in far too many states….I watch movies at the ‘home theatre’…….the other night we watched “The Italian Job” (again) …I admire Charlize Theron , the CEO enjoys all the scheming and violence…and J just loves Cooper Minis.

You should go on a weekday… less crowded, esp if you wait until something has been out a couple of weeks. J can relate… he can’t stomach the smell of the popcorn. I just can’t stomach the ticket prices. :D So the only movies I insist on seeing at the theatre are ones where the big screen is critical (like the Lord of the Rings movies).

I love Italian Job – (I almost typed “Italian Joe” – how funny). It is such a fun, sexy movie. I love Mos Def! (Everyone go and rent “Be Kind Rewind”). We rarely get to the actual movie theaters b/c of toddler-girl and also we live in the middle of nowhere. We are lucky the library gets all the new release DVDs super quick (like HBO time) – about 3 months after they are out of the movies. We all horde and watch them before they go out to circ. And just a little PSA for all you out there – if your local public library has movies, they probably get them really fast too as there are only a few library DVD vendors. And normally you can rent them for FREE!!!!

Ok, and now I’ll have to watch TIJ again…don’t remember Mos Def in that one, but OMG how I HATED him in 16 Blocks. His voice… nails on chalkboard. It was all we could do to finish the movie. That said, shockingly (because it isn’t AT ALL my usual type), I do like some of his music.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

I admit to being annoyed to the point of near-rage by people chomping popcorn in my ear at the theater. I know I’m in the minority here, but I just can’t imagine *eating* through something you’re trying to pay attention to. It’s one reason I prefer Netflix…

      • Joe

I don’t really mind people eating popcorn… manage to tune that out.

But one day you’re going to read about me in the papers because it seems like it’s considered “okay” now to converse about the movie as if you’re in your own private living room. Or at least the people who think it’s okay always sit behind me. WTF, people?

LOL! What about people answering their cell phones and carrying on with the tap tap tap – texting! There’s a movie theatre near me I went to ONE time-unfortunately on Tuesday Free Popcorn Night. Everyone stood in line w their gigantic plastic bowls-I’m not exaggerating-giant containers-some people had two containers! All you can eat-bring your tupperware. It was like walking on velcro what with all the food carnage underfoot.

Took my teenage daughter to the last Harry Potter, and was STUNNED to see all the four-year-olds in the audience. Wonder how many of them had nightmares and their parents have no idea why?

I think I might have seen as many as five movies at the theater before I was ten… they were all Disneys.

Stepping down from the Old Fogy Soapbox now…

        Posted on 20 March 2010

well, y’all just ran thru almost my entire list of peeves about going to the movies….and since the CEO despises going to movies, it is always just me and J and we used to go mid-week to midday shows in order to avoid crowds and “food carnage” (that is perfect!) alas, it seems the lust for cheesy-chili-fries seems equally strong in broad daylight as in the evening. I don’t like the constant chomping but the combination of smells makes me ill. Okay, I’m on the rampage again….so I’ll stop with that. But how about the fact that the volume is generally so high that it’s usually pain inducing?

        • boojum
          Posted on 20 March 2010

YES! That drives me nuts too. Unfortunately, it’s the same way at home; for some reason, neither my husband nor my 5 yr old can “hear” the dialogue unless it’s so loud that I find it too loud from upstairs. :/ Meanwhile, my teenager listens to music so quietly, I have to stand right next to the radio before I even notice it’s on. (Not complaining!)

Daisy, I had pretty much given up on movie theaters for all these reasons, but I HAD to see Avatar in 3D. Fortunately, the Sunday 2 pm showing at the small mall near me was fine (except for 20 minutes of previews). Don’t know if it worked because it’s a time when older people go, if there was less food available, the 3D was so absorbing, or I just lucked out. I heard on NPR about theaters that offer a deluxe experience including no previews – for $20 per admission! I’d probably do on occasion for a select film if there was one near me.

It was very absorbing in 3D, which might have been why everyone was so quiet. But I think it would also be great on DVD – and what wouldn’t I have given to hit the pause button about two-thirds for a quick break ;-)

I AM really hoping that they might show it at one of the IMAX theaters this summer….

    1. CD Fahrenheit. A gift of a great day in suburban NY (68 degrees) today. I wanted to add to the smell of heat (and burnt rubber haha)

    2. Holy cow. CDG 2 Man. When Sephora used to carry this brand, I thought their line was a joke. NO ONE in their right mind will wear these. Then Chandler Burr unleashed the sun out of CDG 2 Man’s ass, and I sampled. And ho-ley s***. Talk about chemistry.

    3. Divine L’homme Sage. Intelligent they said. Somebody even mentioned the essays of Emerson by a fireplace, burst of awesomeness yada yada. Masculine yet different. Hey that’s me. Sampled (TGF luckyscent). Short version: on me, girly soap. Even my wife won’t wear it hahaha and she wears girly perfumes (young sexy lovely ysl, )

    4. Sunday NYT mag. For the crossword. Will Shortz rules.

    5. District 9. I was silent driving on the way home. That is exactly what we will do to them if they are less powerful than us. And Wikus? Nobody deserves that. Whoa. Maudlin. Sorry. Anyway that’s how much this freaking movie affected me. Wife I’m sure was secretly sniggering.

Absolutely yes on everything you said about District 9. Like holding the mirror up to our own faces and how badly we treat everyone. It’s like the whole point of “Animal Farm” but in the 21st century. It was riveting.

    1. SL Chypre Rouge pre-shower, L’Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme just before work (in homage to Beatrice Piquet).

    2. Artek Standard. It sounded boring (I got the sample as part of a Luckyscent collection, I think), but it was really kind of exciting, clean and shiny but with all this wood stacked all over the place at the same time.

    3. Montale Chypre Vanille. Love chypres, love vanilla, hated this powdery, gagging mess.

    4. Harper’s. It’s the only magazine I subscribe to.

    5. I don’t know if “Alice in Wonderland” was *good*, exactly, but I enjoyed it. Does that count?

    1. Fresh Hombre de Flores Narcissus.

    2. Probably the classic Paco Rabanne Pour Homme. I didn’t think I would like that woodyness but yes I do like it a bit. Can’t say I fall in love with it though. I rarely wear it but do have a bottle hanging around.

    3. Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme. Doesn’t work on me AT ALL.

    4. Wallpaper*

    5. The last one I watched was Avatar. Not the best but I did like it. Probably need to go to the cinema more often – just do not have the time!

Robin, I saw it in 3D but I think it would still be good on a home screen. I went to see it as a result of seeing miniscule previews on the NYT website. What you lose in the glory of the big screen, you make up in comfort.

2 Tried Pomegranate Noir and didn’t like it at first but an hour later, WOW! It is now my favourite scent for special nights out.
3 Daim Blond by SL- just doesn’t work for me.
    4 Delicious magazine

    1. SOTD – AG Heure Exquise edt this morning and then AT L’Air du Desert Marocain this evening.

    2. Fragrance I thought I’d hate but then loved – Tom Ford BO Voile de Fleur. The original BO was so horrid to me, and normally I don’t do well with serious white flowers. Now I think it is the living end and the most beautiful white flower fragrance for me.

    3. Fragrance I should love but hate – dead tie between Voleur de Roses and Lipstick Rose. Ack for both of them – too much putrid patch for VdR and too much sugary candy for LR. And I am a great rose lover!!!

    4. I am kind of lame – I actually don’t really read any magazines with regularity….But mostly anything wtih seriously good articles, er I mean pictures, about gardening….Aspirationally, I want it to be the Economist that I always try and read (but who has the time?), and I do try and read the Harper’s my husband gets, but normally I just fall asleep, lol.

    5. Best movie – a tie between Cold Souls with Paul Giamatti and then Serious Man by the Cohen brothers. Cold Souls was one of the most charming & clever movies I’ve ever seen.

    • Joe
      Posted on 19 March 2010

Ann, I love it: another Economist geek. I think it’s the most well-written magazine. I’d have a subscription if I didn’t… you know… have to *work* or do anything else. It would take me 3 days to read it each week. Then again, I do commute by bus. Hmm. I instituted a no-magazine policy a few years back because I was recycling more than I was reading (recycling only AFTER stacking them for four weeks saying, “Oh, I want to get back to that”).

I recently got a sample of BO VdF, but I love the original too. Trying to see if the VdF might be a bit … *less*… for warmer weather and such.

      • AnnS
        Posted on 19 March 2010

Joe – I saw your Economist comment above. Yes! Info nerds of the world unite! I made excuses now for wanting my own personal subscription to it by making my library get it for our standard periodicals. Phew. I believe it is an asset to news magazines for sure. And it is excellent air plane reading – light weight and jam full of info. Funny how I got sucked into it: MANY years ago when I was just a 21 year old pup, it was the ONLY material written in English that my then boyfriend had in his small dorm/flat I was staying in Cologne Germany. I would indeed at that time read it cover to cover to fill in the time (you know, can’t read German, no tv, and certainly no internet then – Economist + Kolsh = good times, lol!). I got hooked. Now I think it is one of the best ways to get information on the US….when I have time to get through them!

      • boojum
        Posted on 20 March 2010

IMO, VdF is *perfect* for a summer night, when the air is still very warm and humid…it just blooms.

    • Posted on 19 March 2010

LOVE Voile de Fleur, it’s so gentle.

My husband keeps pestering me to subscribe him to The Economist – but then balks when it’s time to whip out the Visa.

      • AnnS
        Posted on 19 March 2010

I think you can read a certain percentage of content free online, and then you can always see if your library has it! That way you don’t have to feel guilty when you don’t get through them, which is a challenge as they are weekly. The writing is tremendous. When/if you ever do read it note that ALL the contributing authors write in the same tone, grammar and style. Impeccable. It is a certain fantasy of mine that I get to be a research librarian for the Economist!!!

    3. Fahrenheit. Actually, scratch that: Opium. I tested the Eau de Toilette and found it much tamer (and duller) than its reputation suggests. Epic lasting power though, good Lord.
    4. GQ. I’m freshly impressed with its editorial quality and lack of pretentiousness each time I pick up an issue.

    3. Terre d’Hermes. I bought a couple of unsniffed minis, was sure I was going to love it, and I’ve gone from “well, not for me” to “Yuck!”. I don’t even want to give them away to friends since that would mean risking to have to smell it on them :O

    2. Name a fragrance you were sure you would hate, but you did try it and you loved it.
The new DKNY Men, from the bottle to the drydown. I thought it would be another androgynous and watery mess, but is has some warm resinous notes that are a bit piquant and sparkly and sexy… I think I am in love!

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
I love the concept/marketing of all the Carolina Herrera for men Fragrances, but then I am disapointed with the Juice.. CHIC, AQUA FOR MEN, CH MEN, you name it, they all sound great in concept but when I try them they are all generic, except for maybe a couple.

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?
I am a magazine addict! Sadly magazines are in decline today.
I loved Vanity Fair, but I must say Vogue is my favourite.
I also get newsweek, and Time once in a while.

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?

Confetto! I agree! I had emailed luckyscent asking for some help finding the very best Almond scent, and not just a note but the biggest note, then ordered samples. Confetto was a complete bust. However, Mazzolari Alessandro (sent to me by a swapper) was amazing! All the other samples were bleh. Sinfonia di Note Amande Sucree was not available for sampling (darn it) but it is supposed to be amazing….I’m thiiiiiis close to ordering it unsniffed. Even as I recognize that is bad bad BAD. (someone tell me no, anyone?)

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
BN2B’s Breathe of God. I love the tobacco note.

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it.
Flower Bomb. I normally hate anything that has an overly noticeable gourmande note, but ended up loving Flower Bomb.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
Calypso’s Mimosa. It smells so cheap on me.

    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?
    Flaunt and Surface

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
    Where The Wild Things Are

OOh! I’ve been wanting to try Breath of God. It sounds really interesting.

    Hi everyone!

    1. Today I’m wearing Musc Ravageur :D . I’m so glad I bought the “discovery” kit from Frédéric Malle. I have found some of my favorites.

    2. Hmmm… Probably Côte d’Amour. I tend to not like oceanic fragrances but I loved it.

    3. I really tried to like Al Oud by l’Artisan but on my skin there is WAY too much cumin. I’ll have to try once again.

    4. Must be National Geographic.

    5. I saw Shutter Island yesterday.

That discovery kit is wonderful & I love those little bottles.

    1. I’m wearing Bvlgari Omnia Green Jade.

    2. I thought I’d hate Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche, but now I wear it with a passion! I once asked a woman what perfume she was wearing, because she smelled so good, and she told me it was Eau Fraiche. I was sold in an instant!

    3. I was convinced by the notes and the advertising that I would love Guerlain Idylle, but no – it smells really weird on my skin, somehow bad even. The lily of the valley seems a bit overwhelming and otherwise it’s simply odd (on my skin at least). Also, a few years back, I was sure I would like Ralph Lauren’s Lauren Style, but quite the opposite (though I can’t remember why anymore).

    5. The latest good movie I’ve watched was The Pianist, and before that, The Wrestler.

    • Robin

Shame about Idylle, I find it so pretty!

    1. Provocative Interlude. Forgotten fragrance I dug out of the crates.
2.Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne; I thought the cranberry note would run it for me. Found a sample by chance in a magazine and loved it. Also happened with J’adore L’eau.
    3. Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom and Honey
    4. Essence

The cranberry in Parisienne is just right :-)

    1. L’Artisan Havana Vanille layered with AG Eau de Sud – heavenly

    2. Sacrebleu – sounded way too sweet for my tastes, but I adore it

    3. Donna Karan Cashmere Mist – loved the body cream but the musky EDT chased me around the room hitting me with a broom – damn musk bully!

    4. Like others here, I’m still mourning the loss of Gourmet. Enjoy Vanity Fair when I have a flight. In-Style is my twice yearly guilty pleasure for checking the styles of the rich and youthful ;-)

    5. Majority of movies have been kid-oriented, but I rented A Serious Man and Coco Avant Chanel. With any luck I’ll stay awake long enough after the kids go to bed to watch one of them :-)

I have to ask…. how on *earth* did it ever occur to you to layer HV with EdS??? Not exactly an intuitive choice. I’ll have to try it. :D

      • ScentRed
        Posted on 21 March 2010

I’d like to claim this was a well thought out strategic move, but it was pure instinct. I was enjoying HV but it gave me a big itch for something dry to counterbalance the sweetness. I felt compelled to spritz Eau de Sud. It worked for me, but will surely sound like blasphemy to HV lovers or EdS haters :-) Give it a whirl and let me know if I’m crazy.

    1. SL Rose de Nuit

    2. Can’t think of one.

    3. OJ – ordered the samples after reading all the comments. All are scrubbers on me.

    4. Previously Gourmet :( Don’t subscribe to any now.

    5. Julie & Julia, The Blind Side

    1. Remnants of Cuir de Russie from yesterday – my skin is very tenacious!
    2. Vintage Samsara – I hadn’t liked my sample so why in the world did I think I’d like the vintage? But I love it.
    3. Coromandel – but one of the few I haven’t given up on.
    4. Don’t subscribe to paper.
    5. I won’t bore you all with the list of romantic comedies that I usually watch (I hate well done, gut wrenching realism), but I will recommend Defiance, a true story based on Jews resisting the Germans in WWII.

….and I’m surprised to see you here today….must be taking a break in the basketball tournament watching—-did you see Kansas go down? Ohmigosh—I was riveted to the TV. Probably good for Mich. State, but it was a shock!

Hehehee…. you’re absolutely right. It was a break as they switched games. Of course I saw Kansas go down, and then I worried about celebrating their loss too much as we could be next. But we demolished Wake Forest! WOOO HOOO – GO BIG BLUE!! I’ve done nothing for three days now except watch basketball. It’s now 12:23 a.m. and I’m too hyped up to sleep. Day four coming up! :-D

I’m a Spartan by marriage. I went to a small private college in Michigan. I can only watch so much basketball at a time—that stupid horn/buzzer starts to drive me nuts! I try to catch the last 4 or 5 minutes of each game though—since that’s when it’s do or die.
Rapple — by the time your Cats were up by about 30 pts the TV station switched to Kansas St. v BYU, which was not such a butt kicking. You know the CEO barely budged the entire day–it’s a serious love-triangle : him , the sofa, the big screen….I hand food in from the side…..

Thank you for the (much needed) support!!
I worked myself into a tizzy during the game today. I’m watching the highlights on the news right now and am still holding my breath watching that last shot. Between blowing a huge lead, injuries, foul trouble, and that shot my emotions are exhausted.

Daisy, are you still in Michigan? I don’t mean to be too personal, but you often recommend fragrances I’ve either never heard of or have no idea where to buy and I’m curious where you shop.

    • Rappleyea
      Posted on 21 March 2010

Okay – back in perfume mode… I’m testing as I watch the games and lo and behold I have two new answers.
2.) Thought I’d hate anything with these notes: Top notes: peach, pineapple, papaya, mandarin orange, red berries, orange
Middle notes: cyclamen, lily of the valley, rose, oats
Base notes: sweet woods, white musk, amber

They sound horrific! Fruit, LOTV and musk – my worst nightmare! It is Ex Floribus Vinis #1 Ananas Sativa and it is really very nice. Not at ALL fruity or sweet. Go figure.

3.) Guerlain Tonka Imperiale – I’m a Guerlie Girl for pete’s sake! Of course I was going to LOVE this. Cotton candy with a sharp plastic note (rosemary?) and I’d call it a scrubber but I Can’t. Get. It. Off. HELP!!!

  111. Gardeniagirl
    Posted on 21 March 2010

Fun poll, I have enjoyed reading all the answers!
    My list would be:
    1. SOTD En Passant for an early spring boost. Love, love, love Olivia Giacobetti!
    2. Scent I thought I’d hate but ended up loving: Dior Escale a Portofino. I’m not normally a fan of citrus scents or colognes, but this one has a lovely drydown and feels refreshing without making me sneeze. I tried it on last summer after reading several reviews and to my great surprise it was instant love – ended up buying a FB.
    3. Scent I thought I’d love but couldn’t (under)stand: SL La Myrrhe. This five star (as per Perfumes the Guide) fragrance turned out to be an ugly scrubber on my skin.
    4. Favourite printed magazine: Vogue – I love vintage issues and collect them.
    5. Movie last seen (in a movietheather): New Moon (Twilight saga) with my 12-year old daughter. I hardly ever go to the movies, except for with the kids.

    • Posted on 21 March 2010

I love La Myrrhe – and even I think that it’s a scent that would be polarizing, Love it or Hate it. It has a ton of aldehydes, and can be a little medicinal. Maybe I’m the freak, not you…not that I care, LM just makes me happy!

      • Gardeniagirl
        Posted on 22 March 2010

Lol, glad it makes someone happy! Interesting that you should mention the aldehydes – I always thought it was an amber overdose that bothered me, but as you point out it might be the aldehydes. I tend to stay away from aldehydic scents, they just smell “generic perfume ” on my skin.

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
    Shalimar Parfum
    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it.
Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier, i thought i would hate it and i did for a while but that sweet lavender has grown on me.
    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
Eau de star by thierry mugler, ughh! watermelon + black pepper. Also Cabaret by Gres, i was so excited for a fresh, lemony rose but all I get is straight up make-up! On me, it smells like lipstick, face powder and pencil-eyeliner shavings. it smells good, but i dont want to smell like my mother’s vanity table.
    4. What’s your favorite (print) magazine?
    W
    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
    La Dolce Vita

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
Attar Bazaar’s Tunisian Frankincense. Resinous lemon-lime goodness.

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it.
Flora Bella de Lalique. I normally shun florals in favor of orientals, but this bowled me over with its chilly, luminous loveliness and made a convert out of me.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
Angel. You know…THAT Angel. The topnotes on the test strip were adorable, but that hellish carnival of a drydown only afflicts those who are foolhardy enough to spray it on their skin. Lesson learned the hard way.

    4. What is your favorite (print) magazine?
    It’s a three-way toss-up between Bitch, Bust, and Boho.

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
“Let the Right One In” : amazing vampire flick for people who would normally shun the genre… maybe because it’s Scandinavian? They have such a way with gloom.

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
On Friday I was wearing Sienne L’Hiver, but today I wore Ormonde Woman.

    2. Name a fragrance you were so sure you would hate that you weren’t even going to try it, but for whatever reason you did try it and you loved it……….
RAHAT LOUKOUM by Serge Lutens. I thought it would be too sweet and gourmand, but it turned out to be an absolute winner.

    3. Name a fragrance you were convinced would be perfect for you, but you hated it.
Vol de Nuit. Just totally hated the dry-down and was utterly, utterly underwhelmed by it, sadly.

    4. What is your favorite (print) magazine?
The Spectator. A weekly UK current events/political journal, has a great Arts section too.

    5. What’s the last (good) movie you watched?
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It was an above average crime thriller, very well acted, the plot was handled well, the characters and situations were unusual and compelling, it surprised me. All in all, most satisfying! I guess I should read the novel now…….

In typical me fashion, showing up days later for the party. I am sure no one will even read this, but I’ve been in a psychotherapy training for three days and need to do this to come back to earth. :(

1.) SOTD: Started with BK B2B, then sprayed on MAC MV3 when I got home.

2.) Thought I would hate and loved: Amoreuse. I really don’t do lily. At all. Or so I thought.

3.) Thought would be perfect for me and wasn’t: Mitsouko. I keep trying. I think I’ve now tried every incarnation there is of it, though.

4.) Favorite mag: I used to subscribe to everything on the planet, and now I pretty much just breeze through Entertainment Weekly each week and that’s it. Oh, and I do get BUST, even though I mourn what it used to be. I think i keep waiting for it to get good again.

5.) Last good movie watched: A Single Man. So beautifully done. I remember snorting with laughter years ago when I read somewhere that Tom Ford wanted to direct. I have to retract that snort.

    • Lucy
      Posted on 21 March 2010

      I read it!

    I’m late the party too.

    1) Wearing SJP Covet today that I picked up at TJ Maxx. I LOVE IT! Too bad it’s discontinued, I heard.
    2) Did not think that I would like Dzongkha, but I LOVE it!
    3) Viktor Rolf’s Flower Bomb. My mom’s signature scent. I don’t love it though.
    4) Don’t read a lot of mags (no time) but I tend to love Real Simple when I have a moment. And then all the Us Weekly, In Touch gossip rags. (yes, I admit it.)
    5) Last good movie I saw was, “The Hurt Locker” – it was pretty good.

  118. AnnieA
    Posted on 22 March 2010

    1) SOTD:Bois de Filao
    2) Par Amour Toujours — evidently love the smell of clementines
    3) Back to Black and VCA’s muguet thingie — scrubbers both and so thankful I didn’t buy ‘em unsniffed
    4) Oprah’s mag is perfect for airline travel, as Real Simple still sort of is
    5) No movies this year. Odd.

    2. You will laugh but I avoided for a long time Mitsouko and Shalimar as stinky…
    3. Many much acclaimed frags: Tauer -L’Air du desert marocain, most Bond no.9, most Etat Libre d’Orange, Shaal Nur, Chanel Allure etc
    4 National Geographic
    5. Sherlock Holmes. The couple Robert Downey jr. – Jude Law is fantastic.

5- El secreto de sus ojos (The secret in their eyes). Best Foreign Language Movie in Oscar 2010.
