Hey, babe! I tested this, and it is a very interesting fragrance. It is definitely a more “wearable” oud that is worth a test.

    Hugs!

And how much does this precious sell for? I can already tell I’m not buying any… funny how sometimes the cravings just aren’t there. Which is a good thing.

      $395. Ouch.

She means if my cravings for this were there before, they’re sure not there after hearing the price. And she’s mostly right. Though I’ve been known to spring for a small decant of almost anything. (Even a swanky LE Guerlain thing that comes with its own champagne fountain. Oy…)

It’s $395… totally outrageous. It is a very nice scent but I can’t bring myself to pay that much per ml.

    • violetnoir
      Posted on 3 September 2009

Nope, I would not pay $395. for that. I totally agree that it is worth a try, but the price is ridiculous.

Wonder if it will be available in the travel spray refills? But personally, I think even the “regular” BK fragrances are too spendy.

$395? *snort* Worth a sample, no doubt, but I can’t imagine spending that much. Especially when I think of all the other frags I could get with the same amount. BK has a fantastic sense of humor. ;)

Too steep for just about anyone except the oblivious rich. Maybe there will be a lot of stock leftover to be sold at discount or on eBay. So sniff and file and wait for it to bomb out.

Do any of the BK’s (I feel like I’m talking about Burger King) ever end up on ebay? I avoid ebay like the plague, but it might be worth it for some affordable Liaisons Dangereuse. I think I’m the only one who has really, really liked a lot of the BK’s. (But no, I’m still not coughing up the $225. Or in this case $395.)

BK fan here!!!- my budget (and my aesthetics) are for the travel set only…. The Beyond love travel set… Went to buy and discovered most BK where out of stock. Means we are not the only ones appreciating, then! ;)

At the risk of revealing myself to be the novice I am, what the heck’s “oud”? (and “copahu balm”, come to that?!)

Since when did $400 become the new $200? Les Secrets de Sophie smells lovely, but who really wants to spend $400 for 60mL when there are so many other lovely Guerlain fragrances for a fraction of the price?

    • Robin
      Posted on 3 September 2009

Not me! I’m ignoring the Sophie’s Secrets thing entirely.

LOTS of ouds coming out. Sure is better than pink pepper. I refuse to even try any of the BK’s though – what if I fell madly in love with one – then what?! $$$!! No sir, no thank you. ;-)

If $400 is the new $200, then definitely Oud is the new fruity floral/melon aquatic!

      Posted on 3 September 2009

I don’t know about these latest releases from by Kilian, but every other one I’ve sniffed seems kind of …thin, maybe missing something….they certain don’t impress me as complex or expensive smelling…..and for the pricetag they’ve stuck on them? I think they should at least smell “expensive” …. so I guess I’m glad that so far I sniff the BK’s and say “meh”, next!

      • Robin
        Posted on 3 September 2009

I really liked Prelude to Love. If it was about $85, I’d buy it.

        • Daisy
          Posted on 3 September 2009

for $85 I might reconsider. It’s not that any of them smell bad, just they’re not nearly “enough” to warrant the steep tag they’ve got. At that price point I just expect something really special. (pass the Amouage please…)

Forgive my ignorance but what is Oud? Is it a wood? Im fairly sure it isnt a floral!

    • sayitisntso
      Posted on 3 September 2009

Oud is an oil from the noble rot of the agarwood species of trees. Apparently it’s prized (and prohibitively expensive) because 1) Oud wood is only grown in limited parts of Asia and 2) oud oil can take up to three centuries to form on the trunk of trees affected by a certain strain of bacteria. I’ve never smelled it personally and at this price, I wouldn’t bother trying a sample or something I’m not likely to ever own. So why torture myself? :)

      • sayitisntso
        Posted on 3 September 2009

that’s ’sposed to read “a sample OF..”

        • debbie
          Posted on 3 September 2009

Thank you! I assumed that it had something to do with trees and wood.
Do you know the sort of fragrance it has?

          • Daisy
            Posted on 3 September 2009

I think oud is quite medicinal smelling ….maybe it makes others swoon with delight…but I can pretty much cross a fragrance off the list if oud is referenced prominently in the notes.

          • debbie
            Posted on 4 September 2009

Possibly not for me then- medicinal is not my preferred fragrance note!

    I haven’t a clue. :(

  12. Posted on 3 September 2009

I found it very similar to Le Labo’s Oud 27. They both have that animalic thing going on, and for a long time they cover the same territory. I think there are some differences in the dry down, but my thought was, hey, I can get the same thing for a fraction of the price from Le Labo.

    • Robin
      Posted on 3 September 2009

Oh, thanks! I really like oud & I love Le Labo, but for some reason did not love Oud 27.

      • Posted on 3 September 2009

I do have to say, I of course put on both the Le Labo and the Killian to compare them, and all night long at work I’ve been doing a smell-off…and wouldn’t you know it, the Killian is absolutely stunning. I mean, the two are similar, but they drive on parallel tracks. The Le Labo is sharper, louder, a bit more jarring but perhaps more fun for that, where the Killian is just smooth and purring. And, of course, I am filled with yearning for a bottle of the Killian. Crap.

From what I hear, the JHAG Midnight Oud trumps both, and is less spendy besides.

        Posted on 4 September 2009

I don’t know why I was under the impression that you liked Oud27?

        • Robin
          Posted on 4 September 2009

I would say just that: I like it, but I don’t love it. It isn’t my favorite oud scent, and it is far from my favorite Le Labo. I think I was more enthusiastic about it when I first tried it, but you know how that is: a few more wearings (and especially wearing it next to other things) and my enthusiasm waned.

            Posted on 4 September 2009

Okay, so I bougt a sample, hoping I’d find an oud I could love.

I get very little oud, and a whole lotta YUM. It smells warm and snuggly and very much like a cat sunning itself in a window.

At least, for the first hour…then I get a lot of blood, of all things!

Mind you, that part isn’t even altogether unpleasant, which I know is a strange thing to say, but still and all, for the price, I probably won’t be buying it, since I probably wouldn’t wear it outside my home.

But man-o-man, it is REALLY nice!!!!

    • Daisy
      Posted on 3 September 2009

BLOOD? like tangy coppery metallic…or musky salty? Still too pricey if you can’t wear it out of the house….without a crucifix and a wooden stake…

    • Santemon
      Posted on 4 September 2009

Hmmm, maybe Kilian should have named it Twilight or True Blood. Priced accordingly, he might rake in the teenage vampire lovers market, especially when New Moon debuts! I kinda see Kilian as Edward in a way….

I am really looking forward to Juliette Has a Gun Midnight Oud. I have also read on Basenotes from a Middle Eastern poster that he thinks Montale’s Original Aouds is a dead ringer for the Kilian Pure Oud and only costs $150. I find that difficult to believe since Montale oud tends to be quite medicinal (at least for the first 1/2 hour or so), but hey, it’s worth a try!

    • Robin
      Posted on 5 September 2009

The Montales do tend to be medicinal, but now that so many niche brands are clearly using an orpur version, perhaps they will follow suit.

    • parfumnut
      Posted on 18 September 2009

I will agree with the Middle Eastern poster, it is very close, i actually prefer the Kilian eventhough i am a huge Montale fan.

Artificially Sweetened Oud was my first impression. Need to re-test.

They hardly ever appear on Ebay, especially the new ones and full bottle sizes. Samples do show up, but generally none of the new releases, at least not for a while. I tried the Pure Oud too and find it very wearable and smooth. $395 is a bit much.

    • Robin

It’s too pricey for me, that’s for sure!
