I rarely experiment with seasonal scents at this time of year: I traditionally wear my trusty Caron Nuit de Noel perfume to holiday parties, and I might purchase some fresh potpourri from Santa Maria Novella, but that’s about it. The Bubble Roome’s Home Sweet Home is the first new holiday-themed product I’ve adopted in a long time. It’s a multi-purpose, water-based formula fragranced with a blend of oils; its scent notes are listed as frankincense, cinnamon, peach, blood orange, plum, woody juniper, spruce, pine, vanilla, and musk.
Home Sweet Home is sold as a combination “room refresher, linen spray, body spray.” I’ve been using it liberally around the kitchen, spritzing it lightly onto curtains and sofa pillows in the living room, and testing it on my skin and hair. Any of these methods creates an instant holiday mood…

Molton Brown is a line of products I'm not terribly familiar with, although my sense is that they are generally quite good, if not outrageously wonderful. I occasionally come across them in the bathrooms of upscale hotels, or when I sneak into a business class bathroom on an overseas flight. I love the English look and feel about them, a sort of steady and reassuring quality, unflappable with a stiff upper lip.
Several years ago I came across their Naran Ji Liquid Hand Wash and Soothing Hand Lotion in the ladies room in the lobby of the Peninsula hotel in New York. I used it with great interest and enjoyment, and my lingering recollection is an experience of quite tenacious orange blossom that softly cocooned my hands in a subtle silken luxury…

I love summer, with its early morning clear light that quickly turns hazy and warm. Golden hot sun bakes the patio and there is a constant buzz in the air from the bees making their rounds through vividly colored snapdragons, larkspur, day lilies and hollyhocks in the garden. The work pace slows down, water cooler breaks are more frequent, with perhaps even an afternoon espresso break allowed this time of year — a nod of thanks to our European friends across the pond.
Yes, summer is good. And for some of us, summer also brings back fond memories of the beach — gathering shells, dodging the waves, rolling in tired but happy at the end of a long day outdoors, with that slight salty pungent tang on our skin. And it seems that the home fragrance industry agrees. There are an abundance of products on the market designed to elicit sensations of turquoise water and palm fronds, dried up drift wood and tangy sea salt. Today I am going to review two home spray fragrances in this category: Azur by The Thymes, and Aqua by Antica Farmacista…

The champaca tree (Michelia champaca) is native to India and Southeast Asia and it produces heavily scented flowers in profusion. When a large champaca tree is covered with flowers, whole neighborhoods can enjoy the blossoms’ strange, intoxicating (and naturally fruity-floral) scent — reminiscent of jasmine, quince, banana and magnolia (a relative of the champaca). Champaca trees are often planted on temple grounds and champaca blossoms are placed on Buddhist and Hindu altars as offerings. The scent of champaca can also be found in perfumes: Ormonde Jayne’s Champaca, Christian Dior’s J’Adore and Comme des Garçons’ Series 8: Guerrilla 1 all contain champaca.
Voluspa’s Japonica series of scented products got its packaging design inspiration from Japanese flower motifs (often seen on handmade papers and on textiles). The Japonica scented sprays come in six scents and are Eau de Parfum strength; they can be used as room sprays or to scent the body…
