Prince, the flamboyant pop star with 10 platinum albums, should pay nearly $4 million in damages for welshing on his promise to promote a perfume named after his latest CD, a special referee in Manhattan concluded after conducting a four-day inquest on damages.

A Huntingdon Valley company's lawsuit against superstar recording artist Prince can proceed, a New York Supreme Court judge has ruled. [...] Revelations Perfume & Cosmetics sued Prince last year, claiming the singer failed to promote a perfume Revelations had developed in conjunction with his 2006 album. The company said it spend $2.5 million developing and marketing 3121, but it tanked when Prince refused to make appearances or do anything else on its behalf.

We all know better by now than to expect celebrities who have done original or exciting work in their “areas of expertise” to carry that spirit of innovation over into fragrance. For most celebrities, perfume is a easy way to make money, plain and simple, and making a scent that appeals to as many consumers as possible is the logical outcome.
Still, many celebrity scents seem like reasonable olfactory representations of the stars in question, or at least, of their public personas. Despite their respective troubles, it seems fitting that Britney Spears Fantasy smells like cupcakes and musk…

Prince will launch his upcoming fragrance, 3121, in his hometown of Minneapolis with a concert at Macys:
The singer will shill for his new perfume line, 3121, with an unusual performance on the eighth floor of Macy’s in downtown Minneapolis on July 7, the same day as his previously announced Target Center concert.
Seats to the fragrance jam will be sold in a $250 Ultimate Prince Xperience package, which includes one ticket to both the 4 p.m. Macy’s gig and the 7:30 p.m. Target Center show, plus two special-edition bottles of his eau de parfum…
