In case you missed it, the story behind Mariah Carey’s new Lollipop Bling trio is that Carey’s husband, Nick Cannon, proposed with a ring hidden in a Ring Pop package. So the three new candy-inspired fragrances — Honey, Ribbon and Mine Again — were made in partnership with Topps, the makers of Ring Pops, and when they appear in mass market stores next year (right now they’re at Macy’s and the like) they’ll be marketed alongside actual Ring Pops.

Honey was my favorite of the three, but that isn’t exactly saying much. It’s supposed to be the “bright and sunny” entry, but it isn’t the light, sparkling and fun summer scent it could have been…

All those recent stories about how the celebrity fragrance trend is dying? Don’t believe ‘em. They’ve been saying that every year that I’ve been writing this blog, and look around — do you see fewer celebrity fragrances? Au contraire. The pie might be shrinking, but apparently everyone still wants a slice. And here is Mariah Carey (you might not recognize her right away given the wildly enthusiastic photoshopping) with Forever, her third fragrance in two years (not counting one flanker and two collector bottles).

Forever hopes to reflect Carey’s satisfaction with how well her life is going:

I am in a wonderful place right now, surrounded by all the things I love, and Forever captures this moment in time.¹

Forever is supposed to be a “modern opulent floral”, and if you take modern opulence to be watery rather than full-bodied, that’s exactly what it is. The opening is crisp, fresh and watery, with tart apple plus some added greenery and citrus; the heart is a watery gardenia/tuberose floral blend with vaguely fruity undertones. The florals are strong and diffusive for a very short time, after that, they’re sheer, and need not scare anybody…

Luscious Pink is the second fragrance from Mariah Carey, and follows last year's M by Mariah Carey. Elizabeth Arden, who holds the license for Mariah Carey's perfume line, is hoping the new scent will find an audience in the growing Asian perfume market, and so the tag line, “Embrace the Ethereal” is more than just the usual hyperbole — you'd expect “inoffensive” rather than “unusual” or “big statement” from such a thing, and that's just what you'll get with Luscious Pink.

Elizabeth Arden is calling Luscious Pink a “sparkling floral”; to my nose, the emphasis is laid on the sparkling far more than the floral. The opening is fresh and diffusive, with pale pink fruits — I don't know what fruits those would be, in particular, but that's what they smell like: pale pink fruits…
