Top 10 Spring Fragrances 2010

Spring! Finally. It isn’t summer, but it’s almost summer, and if, like me, you detest the cold, that’s very nearly the best thing about it. The absolute best thing, of course, is the flowers. My list is heavily weighted towards the “pretty floral” fragrance category, and it’s also heavily weighted towards niche, and expensive. Sorry, it just worked out that way. Hopefully, my fellow bloggers did a better job on the diversity front: see Bois de Jasmin, Grain de Musc, Perfume Posse and Perfume Smellin’ Things for more top 10 lists. Meantime, here’s mine:

CB I Hate Perfume Black March: the smell of spring, and the perfect thing to wear on a warm, rainy April day, although there’s something about it that can tend towards the melancholy. If you can’t afford it, you can make do with Demeter Dirt — someone called Black March the high def version of Dirt, and that’s apt…

LesNez Turtle Vetiver Exercise No. 1 ~ fragrance review

Les Nez Turtle Vetiver fragrance

I said yesterday that I hadn't swooned over a new fragrance in some time (see Vanille Galante), but I left one out: Turtle Vetiver, from LesNez. It's their latest scent from perfumer Isabelle Doyen, and it was developed as part of the Turtle (“anarchic”) salon:

TURTLE is an open and chaotic network of diverse but interconnecting ideas, people, projects, events, and venues linked by American filmmaker, Michael H Shamberg. Perfumer Isabelle Doyen’s contribution is a Vetiver EdT which she makes in small quantities and constantly changing formulas.

You can read more about the Turtle project here, but I'll skip right ahead to Turtle Vetiver, or more specifically, Turtle Vetiver Exercise No. 1…

LesNEZ Manoumalia perfumeLesNEZ will launch Manoumalia in January. The new fragrance was developed by perfumer Sandrine Videault, and was inspired by a trip Videault took to Wallis, in the South Pacific, to learn about the use of fragrance materials in the island's “olfactive culture”. Wallisians use scented materials as decoration…

The Unicorn Spell by LesNEZ ~ fragrance review

Les Nez The Unicorn Spell fragranceThe Unicorn Spell is one of the three debut fragrances from LesNEZ, a new niche perfume brand founded by René Schifferle. The scents were developed in collaboration with perfumer Isabelle Doyen, best known for her work with Annick Goutal. LesNEZ is one of those lines that doesn’t like to disclose fragrance notes (I hate that!) so we’ll have to lead off with Isabelle Doyen’s description of The Unicorn Spell:

If by dawn still linger on your skin mixed scents of leaves, frost and violet blooms, and that relentless yearning for stellar sights, you will know that, at night, you felt the milky breath of a unicorn.

Short of an avalanche of fascinating launches from niche perfumeries between now and the end of the year — how likely is that? — LesNEZ, along with Le Labo, will easily make my list of the best fragrance news of 2006. All three of their fragrances are interesting and beautifully done; of the three, The Unicorn Spell seems to be the early favorite on the blogs and fragrance boards, and it is easy to see why…
