Guerlain has launched Myrrhe et Délires, the latest addition to their L’Art et la Matière collection. The new fragrance focuses on Somalian myrrh…

I am not passionate about Guerlain’s L’Art et la Matière line: so far, they’ve been (mostly) nice, but my wallet does not quake in fear when a new one is launched, as it does when it hears of an upcoming Hermessence. My favorite so far has been the lovely Bois d’Armenie, by perfumer Annick Menardo, but despite the fact that I’ve been through a few samples and small decants, so far I’ve not been moved to buy it.
The seventh and newest in the range, Tonka Impériale, was developed by Guerlain house perfumer Thierry Wasser. As Wasser also did the only one of the group that I seriously disliked, Iris Ganache, I didn’t really get excited about Tonka Impériale until I started seeing glowing reviews. So here I am, joining the bandwagon rather late: this is really wonderful stuff…

Tonka Impériale, launching this month, will be the seventh fragrance in Guerlain’s L’Art et la Matière line…
Ok, so anyone who reads Now Smell This regularly already knows I love iris. Prada’s new Infusion d’Iris is only the latest in a long list of iris fragrances that make me swoon, and I’m still mourning Chanel’s 28 La Pausa, which I adore but refuse to buy inasmuch as it is just too costly for such an ephemeral experience.
But I don’t love everything iris. Angela recently wrote a lovely appreciation of Le Labo’s Iris 39, and I was very glad she did because I had nothing nice to say about it. And while I get the idea behind Frederic Malle’s Iris Poudre, I have no desire to wear it. Same goes for Dior’s justifiably lauded Dior Homme.
Iris Ganache, which was added to Guerlain’s L’Art et la Matière range (see Cuir Beluga, Rose Barbare, Angelique Noire and Bois d’Armenie) earlier this year, sounded like it might not be my sort of iris…
