Recently I did a triple review of Ormonde Jayne Tiare, Stella McCartney Stella Nude and Strange Invisible Perfumes Fire and Cream, and I started out by saying there was no common theme to tie the three fragrances together, to which Mals86 responded in the comments that the theme was clearly “Recent Releases: Very Nice, But Didn’t Grab Me” — true enough in the case of the Ormonde Jayne and the Strange Invisible Perfume, although I don’t think I’d grace the Stella Nude with even a “very nice”. In any case, in the interest of saving you the trouble of reading, I’ll tell you today’s theme up front — “Recent Releases: Don’t Try Them On My Account”.
Couture Couture by Juicy Couture
Juicy Couture has done very nicely for themselves with their fragrance line, and the first two entries for women were both well-executed examples of their respective genres — the original Juicy Couture being a nearly perfect representation of a bright perky mainstream fruity floral, and Viva La Juicy of a young-ish mainstream candied floral gourmand. Neither of those are things I care for terribly, mind you, but I can see the attraction.
Couture Couture is another matter. I originally tried it next to the two earlier Juicy fragrances, and my initial reaction was that I didn’t love any of the three, but that Juicy Couture and Viva La Juicy at least smelled like perfume, whereas Couture Couture, whilst most definitely possessing a smell, did not…

When I heard that Bath & Body Works would be releasing a fragrance called “Twilight Woods,” and that this fragrance would evoke “a romantic walk in enchanted woods,” I imagined a blend of pine and cedar, a few drops of resin, and an ozonic note hinting at an oncoming snowstorm. When I later saw the list of notes, I realized that it would actually be a woodsy-fruity gourmand, with “top notes of Juicy Berry, Sparkling Mandarin, and hint of Coconut, heart notes of Creamy Frangipani, Soft Mimosa, Wet Honeysuckle, Wild Freesia, and Apricot Nectar, and basenotes of Oud Wood, Skin Musk Captive, Vanilla Milk, and Warm Woods.”
Twilight Woods is the newest addition to Bath & Body Works’ Signature Collection line, in keeping with the recent string of more complex, “abstract” fragrances (such as P.S. I Love You, as opposed to yet another Cucumber Melon type). It was developed by perfumers Harry Fremont, Jane Konnyu, and Honorine Blanc. This fragrance could just as easily have been named “Twilight Orchard,” because a ripe apricot note runs throughout its development…

Shortly after graduating from college with a degree in English literature, I decided I should, like so many other graduates I knew, “go into sales.” I got a job at a public relations company and was assigned “non-profit/government accounts” (not exactly the money-making and glamorous clients I had envisaged). My first appointment was at a busy, city police precinct. I arrived for my meeting with the police department’s media relations specialist at the same time an infamous rapist had been brought in for booking. News reporters swarmed the building and my contact paid scant attention to what I had to say or what my company had to offer. I felt rather puny in that environment, especially as I looked at the P.R. guy’s tanned, bulging biceps…his upper arms were almost the size of my thighs. He left the room “for a second” and never came back. After waiting way too long for him to return, I snuck out of the building.
Almost all my appointments were in some way or other embarrassing and unproductive, and my sales career ended within a month. I was left with two expensive souvenirs from those uncomfortable and futile weeks: a “business” suit (long ago donated to charity) and a Coach attaché. The attaché still resides, wrapped in a soft cotton t-shirt, on the top shelf of my bedroom closet; it’s taken out for moisturizing once a year.
At the time I bought my attaché, Coach’s goods were considered high quality but a bit stodgy. These days, Coach is hipper…
