Happy Almost-Friday, and happy Leave the Office Earlier Day (really)! What fragrance are you wearing?
I went with The 7 Virtues Afghanistan Orange Blossom. Tea at the moment is Kusmi Traktir.
Reminder: 6/3 will be Leap of Faith Friday — wear a scent you’ve never worn before with bonus points for a scent you haven’t read about and don’t know the notes for. Suggested by Eleebelle.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Musc Nomade (Annick Goutal). Beautiful image today!
Isn’t that gorgeous?
It really is. Makes me want to travel to Afghanistan.
Hmm you have inspired me to try the sample that they sent me along with my Sables.
You smell wonderful!
SOTD is Misia. Love it!
You smell wonderful!!!! Love Misia too.
You smell fantastic!
Elegant!
I love Misia too and that’s also my SOTD.
In the fall, all the exclusive Chanels will be EDP’s.
Misia should even be more beautiful as an EDP.
Oh just about to go do some Chanel sniffing, so this is very good to know.
Leap of Faith day four: Parfum d’Empire Eau de Gloire, which is really just a classic cologne, but really really excellent cologne with depth and complexity.
That’s a nice one.
You smell great! One of my most successful blind buys.
I remember getting leather from my sample, and as I’m now in a big leather kick, it may be time to break that one out again. Do you get leather from it?
There’s leather in it, but I wouldn’t call it a leather scent: it’s cologne spilled on an Hermes bag, maybe. (I once spilled a half a mini of Very Irresistible for Men in a leather knapsack, which for months afterwards smelled SPECTACULAR. They really should have done an A*Men-style Cuir version of that scent instead of those endless fresh flankers.)
Gorgeous image. I’m in another Nicolaï; Vie de Château this time. It’s lovely. The new Intense is very good too.
Drinking a rather nice Milky Oolong.
Yum. Still on my buy list. And I need a new milky oolong.
I always thought that you owned Vie de Château Eau Fraîche, but apparently I’m wrong.
My favourite, and rather fancy Milky Oolong is called Jin Xuan, it’s stunning.
Nope, I’ve relied on decants and talking about owning it.
I like all the Nicolai happening these days. I wore Weekend in Normandy a bunch last week. You smell great!
I need to try that one. I’m wondering if it’s what I’d hoped Odalisque would have been. I was hoping for more green from that one-something Chamade-esque and less sweet. How does it smell to you?
It smells like summer to me, but with notes I can’t pull apart and always am looking up. It has real presence but is salty and lightly earthy, with something greenly flowery which I guess is LOTV, although not like others I’ve tried. Very different than Odalisque, which is much more formal to me, more stately and richer. There is something sort of zippy about Weekend.
Thanks! Salty, earthy, and greeny all sound good to me.
Tried more of these Lurk perfume oils and I can’t smell anything after 10 minutes so the leap of faith is working out pretty good if I wanted something with a short longevity.
My other leap of faith which I am trying again today is Palimpsest, and I have just such a horrible reaction to this. I thought maybe I would try it in cooler weather, but nope. Not working. Literally headache inducing and had to wash it off. Something about this is very off-putting.
However my solid sample of Bergamoss is all gone. I loved the grassy earthy oils in this one, but, no longevity. Maybe I need to try the liquid form..
Tea at the moment is on my way to Oslo for a cappuccino, working this weekend so I am enjoying the day off with the babies
I found Palimpsest unbearably cloying and sweet. It did not work for me either but that being said, I will eagerly try others. Love Ancient Resins and the frankincense tea!
Same here. Palimpsest, Sadanne and Or du Serail all proved unbearably sweet and awful for me. :/
Have you noticed the ones that don’t work for you last the longest no matter how hard you scrub ????
Interesting, I had same feeling about Or du Serail. Guess I should bump the others to bottom of my to-try list!
I have a sample of Ancient Resins that should come my way soon..
The liquid lasts on me, so maybe worth a shot?
Thanks for your input , I will give it a try
Bergamoss is the same on me — gone in an hour, but such an enjoyable hour!
About an hour for me as well..I want more more more…
Serge Lutens Une Voix Noire, what a beautiful gardenia!
I love that one, it has smoke with a sweet grape note on me along with the gardenia. Great stuff!
Yessssss!
I hear Billie Holiday!
I love Billie Holiday and I can see to some extent the connection with the Lutens fragrance.
It was inspired by her after all 🙂
Hi good people of NST! I’m wearing Rive Gauche pour homme. Fougere city.
I like that city!
You smell fabulous!
You recommended a Coudray fragrance on BdJ the other day; Jacinthe et Roses, or something like that. Are there any others in the line that merit a try?
It’s the only one from that line I’ve tried. I’d love to hear if others know more…
Thanks!
Is this the one in the old bottle or the new cube one? Do they smell different?
I just have a sample so I’m not sure — sorry!
You had perked my curiosity, so I went to smell it today. So great! I didn’t know that it was such a fougère thing. Wonderful. I love it.
I’ve been taught not to be such a perfume snob. Recently bought a bottle of David Beckham’s Homme because I got it on the cheap. Really cheap. A 2.5 ounce bottle for $12. Why has this darned thing become my most complimented fragrance in a long while? *sigh* It’s pretty simple and quiet – citrus (I’d guess grapefruit and lemon), pepper, ginger, something slightly herbal – rosemary is listed in the official notes, and modern patchouli (read: super clean) over a pale woody base. No fewer than five people have asked about it in as many days. I kinda love it. Talk about a cheap thrill! Question: Is it terrible that I don’t tell people what it actually is when they ask? I think that’s a personal question when asked by someone you don’t know!
Don’t sweat it. I don’t think they *really* want to know. It’s just the next question people ask. You smell great: what are you wearing? You can just say it’s something French that you can’t pronounce, if you don’t feel like disclosing.
I don’t know…when I work up the courage to ask someone about their scent, I truly do want to know! It had never occurred to me that it might be a personal question; if anyone had ever turned me down (they haven’t yet), I’d certainly be dissuaded from ever asking anyone again.
Those notes sound just lovely. Sounds like a worthy use of $12!
Well, yes, Korel, we perfumistas are a different breed! When I ask someone, I’m already pulling out my phone so that I can look it up!
There was an older woman who was on the board of an organization I worked for in NYC many many years ago, and she smelled amazing. I loved perfume but it was mostly an an unrequited love back then. After months of study, I thought it was perhaps Cristalle (something I had only sniffed at counters and never worn other than after a visit to a department store). So I asked. She was a very smart, thoughtful person, but that day she gave me such a look of disdain. I had been totally gauche! Who knew?!
I like it when someone asks what I am wearing as I see it as a positive sign they genuinely like it. If the question feels creepy or too personal, I prevaricate…”Can’t remember.”
I would have had no idea it was gauche either!
Oh gosh I think that’s gotta be a generational thing. There’s one Calvin Trillin line that I will remember forever because of how hard it stopped me in my tracks: “Now that it’s fashionable to reveal details of married life,” he prefaced a joke about how his wife Alice had “a weird predilection for limiting our family to three meals a day.” But I was so stunned: I just really had not thought about the fact that “married life” or any number of other aspects of one’s personal life had once been considered too intimate to discuss! I mean of course some still are, but at any rate, to say the line has been moved substantially, I think. So her gauche may be rather … historically specific 🙂
My idea of gauche would be to bury your nose in their neck and huff.
“Something French that I can’t pronounce” is my usual answer – because it’s true! 😉
Ha, same here.
I asked a man what he was wearing a while ago and he said he didn’t know. I believe that he truly didn’t know.
If he was young, that’s the stock response to any question.
Ha! I laughed out loud!
This cracks me up! Maybe he was simply too shy to admit that he is borrowing his lady’s beautiful perfume 😉 I used to be like that with Portrait of A Lady — I once said uhmm Portrait of A Man, I think!
Ha ha! The little-known flanker to Portrait of Dorian Grey!
oh you have captured it magnificently!
“I think”! 🙂 Maybe next time, “Oh I don’t know… it is something by Henry James…”
I am all for gender-bending, but I hardly think wearing a fragrance marketed to the other gender qualifies. My extremely successful (so he should be confident) father-in-law was disturbed when he learned that I wear some scents that are ‘pour homme.’ I just don’t get it! (But I too would have answered something like the way you did. I’m just commenting on the larger conundrum/fools gold of gender marketing. I want to shake people and say, do you really think the scientists and product development people really know what is the essence of manhood (or womanhood) and can bottle, color, design it into a product?)
Great idea! That sounds so sophisticated ahaha. And, about you father-in-law story… imagine his face when if you had told him, ‘I use Brut and Old Spice’.
I actually understand him because his generation is probably more used to that concept of feminine and masculine perfumes. Even in 2015, I was too shy to admit that I always like my mother’s Diorissimo and No.5! It has taken some time before I could finally muster the courage to walk over to the ladies’ counter and try them all. Of course, I get weird looks from the SA as well, and some even approached me to say that this is for women. The best response is ‘I collect perfumes’. Period.
Oh that is a great response, I will have to remember that one. I too have had SAs refuse to show me perfume on gender grounds ????
Not at all. It can be that you find it too personal for others to know what you are wearing. If that is the case, just tell them directly, and I am sure they would understand. Whenever I ask someone, I always end the sentence with ‘if you do not mind me asking at all’.
I’ve found that my response depends on the person asking. If they don’t seem to be really enthusiastic or are creeping me out, I say I can’t remember. Sometimes I’m just so surprised that my mind goes blank and I really can’t remember. I expect that happens to people a lot.
Occasionally someone is so obviously interested like the guy in the elevator who HAD to know so he could get some for his wife, he was apologetic for being personal, and so sincere that I couldn’t resist being helpful. Of course, I was wearing Kingdom so I’m not sure he went to the trouble to track it down.
Most of the time I can’t pronounce what I am wearing..
I don’t know why, but it doesn’t strike me as a personal question. Maybe because I’m projecting it into the world, or at least I figure I am if someone is asking? I am embarrassed when it is something hard to find and expensive, but I still tend to answer. But that’s just me.
And interestingly, with friends and colleagues, there are people who will get some piece of clothing they’ve seen me wear, which drives me a little nuts, but makeup or perfume not so much.
And actually, even with the clothes I don’t mind unless it’s something pretty distinctive.
Interesting question! On the one hand I don’t think you owe strangers conversation on any subject, so if you feel creeped out, I think you can do whatever you need to get out of the situation! At the same time I do sometimes think we perfumistas can underestimate the degree to which we have a hobby that’s actually a fairly public one, rather than just a personal one. Whether it’s in terms of triggering others’ allergies or attracting questions about what we’re wearing, I don’t know how surprised we should be that other people react if we put on something that wafts into the air they’re breathing! Just to say, I’m not sure everyone has the same sense that it’s an intimate question (as opposed to the people who know they’re being intrusive and don’t care–I make no apologies for the latter group.)
I like this response. Good guideline.
Now I am lemming this especially at this price. I’ve seen this at Marshalls!
Indochine today
No leap of faith there
Yum!
You smell wonderful!
Hi NST!
First day in ages I’ve been able to post! I am so excited because of all the warm weather, and last night I finally switched out my warm weather/cold weather samples. All week I’ve been reveling in long-unworn scents like Jardin sur le Nil, Matin d’Orage, etc.
SOTD is Pacifica Mediterranean Fig. Gorgeous!
You smell lovely!
Thank you!
Hiya!!
Hello, yourself. It’s good to be back.
…I have a funny Med Fig story but I am gonna err on the side of family-friendly caution and just say, I know some fans of that one 😉
Ooooh, would love to hear it! Ribald perfume stories are the best.
I wore that yesterday and was reminded of how it happy it makes me!
Inspired by someone (I don’t remember who) from yesterday’s scent-of-the-day post, I’m in Esprit d’Oscar. So beautiful.
One of my favorites!
Does it smell like Oscar?
I think it smells more like Oscar from the 1980’s with a citrus opening. It also reminds me of L’Heure Bleue from the same time period.
I think it is similar enough to earn its flanker status, but I like it much, much better than the original.
Heading out on the first leg of Gaze’s College/Military Academy Summer Experience (oh dear) today. Yale this afternoon (we’ll get to see Bookworm and have dinner with her!), West Point tomorrow. The CEO and I will come home Saturday night. I’m taking Carven Le Parfum and Kelly Caleche edp with me.
What fun — enjoy the trip!
Have a wonderful time! You picked two great scents to take with you.
Have a nice trip Mals. I imagine it must be exciting yet bittersweet.
Those seem like perfect choices for your trip.
Enjoy!
You will love it! Have a great trip!!!
I hope you all enjoy the trip!
Best of luck!
Wearing vetiver essential oil and am going to try the new Lalique Encre Noire extreme and hoping, nay leaping, into the abyss and hoping not to land on the Iso E super shards!
So, I am all for truth in advertising! Extreme does not mean more fabulous vetiver but some incense and plenty of wood, brought to you by Iso E Super! Stick with the original, that luscious boozy opening, yards of juicy vetiver, I miss it!
Hmmm… I am a huge fan of the original, regardless of its reputed gallons of Iso E Super. Guess I will stick to it!
Ah, good to know. Some incense would be welcome but if there’s less vetiver, no interest.
Marions-Nous by Oriza L. Legrand, a brave choice as this house simply does not work for me. At. All. I actually liked the first few minutes – powdery but slightly shrill aldehydes, orange blossom, hyacinth, rose, jasmine. It’s supposed to evolve into a major skankfest later on, and considering that I seem to be lacking a reliable skank detector, I’m interested in what I’ll make of that phase.
I wish I lived closer. I could be your skank meter.
What a generous offer, lol!
(You’re on. You, me, the next meetup. If you make it up here for the Eris event, you’ll definitely come in handy! 😀 )
I love this one. I don’t really get much skanky from it, just lots of orange blossom which goes through some soapy and then flowery changes. It seems friendly to me.
Oh, thanks for chiming in! Five hours in, and I’m getting pretty much what you’re describing, although I’m guessing your soapy is my powdery.
Today’s leap of faith was Love, Chloé. I don’t mean to be elitist, but…it smells mainstream. I don’t get rice powder at all; it’s mostly just sweet, pleasant flowers on me. Meh. I certainly don’t mind it; I’m just not that interested by it.
Interesting. That is a favorite of mine and I definitely get the rice powder. Funny how scents smell so different on individuals. I was just thinking about getting a backup bottle as it has been discontinued.
I will have to try it in different weather, I suppose!
I don’t know how much difference it may make, but I tend to wear it in the colder months.
It smelled mainstream on me as well..
Oh too bad! I don’t love it either but that’s because I’m not much for powdery scents. Sorry you’re not getting the powder! And sorry for us both because I really like that bottle.
I’m not too sorry about not getting the powder 🙂 I dislike it in many scents (CN5, Kenzo Flower), so perhaps I would have disliked it in Love, Chloé, too. Although I didn’t quite understand if it had notes of powder and also of rice, or if it had notes of rice powder (which I think of as a different scent from the smell of rice itself).
Muguet Porcelaine, migraine proof. Leaps of faith don’t go well with migraine I think. What a stunning picture Robin! I wish the 7 virtues were available here, but as far as I know they aren’t.
You are fresh and beautiful!
I don’t know where you are, but they are currently available through only one department store chain in each of the following countries:
Canada, US, UK, Germany, and Austria.
Here’s the link to the 7 Virtues website:
http://www.the7virtues.com/department-stores/
No affiliation, just like to enable 🙂
I’m in Azemour les Oranges today, for a cool, drizzly, finally-feels-like-Oregon-in-the-spring morning. Ahhhhhhh.
It realy does feel like an Oregon spring day, doesn’t it! But then we get a mini heat wave…:-P
Yes! What the heck is up with our weather lately? The Starlight Parade is going to be utterly miserable.
Hey scent twin, we smell good!
Hi twin!
Had a pretty rockin’ night last night! Went to a concert last night with a friend, then dinner, then coffee! I’m exhausted this morning. And surprise, Houston is getting more rain. I don’t feel like working today at all.
I’m wearing vintage Nahema today. I felt like being complex. 🙂
I’ve never smelled Nahema. I hope its living up to being complex today 🙂
I’m doing alright in it, for sure.
Ooh a warm rose and Guerlinade. Gorgeous.
It really is lovely. Wish it had been more popular.
Wish some of that water could come our way in California.
Nahema is so pretty!
You can have all of it! I looked at the storm maps and there is a ring of storms and it is just perfectly rotating right over us.
I have some older Nahema, and it is just the bomb. I tend to horde it or wear for special occasions. It is one of my HG roses (tied with Ta’if!). You smell fantastic!
I do love Nahema too, though it is anyghing but a bomb on me. I constantly have to refresh.
I am lucky then – the edp I have is very potent. One spray dabbed around will last me all day.
I only just tried Nahema recently and really like it. I wondered how a Guerlain rose would smell and it smells like an abstract painting of a rose to me. I think it might even appeal to rose-o-phobes. You’re smelling fab!
SOTD is Loewe 7, as I’m going through an “incense vine” week
This has a great incense note and strong characer. I love it!
Profumum Meringa, for a warm rainy day in Montreal. Local street fair starting today and running all weekend – should be fun!
Have a great weekend!
Enjoy! I didn’t get any warm weather when I visited Montreal in April, but I still enjoyed it
Sampling Santa Eulalia Citric which is a lovely choice considering that I’m sick–not too complicated, not too loud and doesn’t grate on my nerves at all
Hope you feel better soon!
Feel better Rena!
Fell better!
Sorry to hear. Hope you feel better soon.
Feel better, dear.
Wearing Cuir Alien today. The richest and best Alien for me. Today anyway:)
I should get a bottle of this. I did not when they first came out because I could not decide which I liked better, Alien or Angel.
I didn’t get it at first either. I love almost all the Aliens though, and figured I would take the chance. Glad I did.
Wow- that sounds VERY intriguing!
It really is. It doesn’t have the same purple smell as the original, if that makes sense. I find it to be deeper and more sexy smelling.
That does make sense! If I can, I am going to try to seek out a sample!
Alien is one of my possible leaps of faith for tomorrow. How strong is it on a scale of Ellena to Angel? Should I spray with caution or abandon?
Proceed with extreme caution. It is strong stuff.
Happy Thursday!
It has been very warm and humid the past couple of days, and so we finally got rain last night! Now it’s very mild and damp outside- and it seems to carry the scent of washed flowers very well.
SOTD: Lush’s Lust (solid form). Just a few swipes- was running late for work. A big cup of cafe au lait is at hand, along with avocado toast.
Lovely scent and breakfast… I’m a little jealous of both at the moment!
It was perfect for the day! Both – scent and breakfast- was warming, fulfilling yet light at the same time!
Creed’s Virgin Island Water today. It’s very beach-y, in a vintage suntan oil sort of way. Which is helpful, because I’m longing for vacation in a couple of weeks, and it’s raining here. Again (or maybe at this point I should say still).
Boy Chanel. Still deciding whether a decant is in order.
Wore Black Jade last night and it lingered into the morning. After a shower, I’m going to test drive Nanban a little more thoroughly as it is cold again here.
I chose Black Jade as my SOTD. It’s such an elegant scent. We smell good!
You both smell lovely!
🙂
Thank you! Just remembered I get to do some perfume shopping this afternoon so will skip the Nanban and stay with a couple of delicate spritzes of Black Jade.
Not wearing anything yet, but maybe I’ll grab something out of the sample pile after the workout/shower. Or maybe I’ll go with my trusty oldest bottle of Douce Amere, which I think will play well with the gray “slightly cooler” MD weather today.
On an unrelated note – have you all watched the “video” (3:15) version of the Chanel no. 5 advertisement with Gisele? Apparently in high school my husband was pretty good friends with the singer Lo-Fang, who is seen in the video.
What a cool connection!
Sifted through my untested samples and pulled out Bois 1920 Notturno Fiorentino. I smell tart fruit (I think?) and vanilla, which was unfortunately the WRONG choice for today. A little too “thick” for the season, I think.
I’m wearing L’Artisan L’Ete en Douce today. Its from a small sample I have. I took a leap of faith on this one, and I’m liking it a lot.
I leapt into that yesterday and I enjoyed it as a hot weather option. I have a full bottle that was a blind buy a year ago and I don’t remember trying it…Pretty.
Reading too quickly, I thought you were wearing 7 Viruses, but I’m glad that’s not the case.
SOTD 31 Rue Cambon
I’m hoping some samples I ordered arrive by tomorrow, otherwise I might be at a loss for the project. I think the only thing I haven’t tried is Versace Eros por Femme from a mini that a discount shop included with a purchase. But I’m a bit wary…
Now trying to imagine what 7 Viruses would smell like…
Not good, I’m guessing.
Not a great name for a scent.
I dunno, could go along with Demeter’s Zombie and Zombie Dog. . . . 🙂
????
31 RC is one of my favorites. You smell wonderful darling.
Why thank you! And someone at work told me I smelled nice, a rarity, but nice to hear.
Ha!
You smell fabulous. Exactly the opposite of what ‘7 Viruses’ would smell like!
Nice!
Wearing Songe d’un Bois d’Ete by Guerlain, decidedly not a leap of faith for me. I adore this, and am grateful to have so many samples of it, though a full bottle would be lovely – I could spray more decadently.
I’m not sure that the people I’m catsitting for for these six weeks plan on compensating me in any way, but if they do, I’m considering suggesting they buy me a nice bottle of perfume…scent to be determined. Maybe this one? Or Rose Omeyyade from Atelier des Ors. Or twelve different other things I don’t need. 🙂
Doesn’t hurt to ask, or the $ to buy the bottle of Songe
Indeed it does not!
I may be out of line here, but these people honestly don’t sound like anyone you should consider friends, or even have much dealings will after this fiasco. It reeks to my mind of them taking advantage of you.
I might have to try one of the samples you sent as my Leap of Faith scent for tomorrow. Thanks so much for sending them!
Prior to this, they really were lovely people, and as I knew that her mother was going through chemo and everything, I was very sympathetic to their situation. But yes, I have realized that they took advantage here, and I really should have taken better care of myself. My not saying no is definitely on me (an issue I’ve confronted before in my life, and I’ve learned my lesson for sure.
Live and learn, right? Your (and everyone else’s) protective support is really appreciated, Jenkr – thank you! I’m lucky that this is the biggest inconvenience I have to experience this year, and that I have so many lovely friends who are looking out for me.
Hope you find something you love in the samples!
I haven’t chosen a perfume for the day yet, since I’m off to get a massage in an hour, but I wore Vanilla Flash to bed last night and can still smell its lovely traces. I’m loving not-too-sweet vanillas for bedtime, recently — so soothing and cuddly, and so pleasant to get a whiff of when I wake up in the night (over and over and over…)
Vanilla Flash is one of my favorites, and goodness, does it last forever!
I wear Rose Flash to bed sometimes, and it makes its way into my dreams. I don’t get whiffs of it so much as I get waves. Tsunamis. To be fair, I do roll it all over my arms and chest with some abandon.
hmm, I haven’t tried any of the flashes, but since I’m trying to avoid floral perfumes (due to sensitivities), I’ll have to throw this one on the sample list!
You smell lovely
I love the Vanilla, Rose and Amber flashes. Haven’t tried Fruitcholi or whatever that one is called. Definitely priced well, too.
Matin d’Orage again today with thunderstorms and heavy downpours. A favorite coincides with reality.
Super pretty frag!
It feels as if we’re finally on the verge of Summer here, so I decided I wanted something light and pretty. Today I’m wearing Kenzo’s Eau de Fleur de Magnolia, a blind buy that has worked out extremely well for me. I love the smell of magnolia – we had one in our yard growing up, and I was heartbroken when it became diseased and had to be cut down – and I usually jump on the industry’s latest attempt to replicate its gorgeous, waxy-lemony-milky perfume. The better ones I’ve sniffed have been on the pricey side, and when I just happened to see a brief mention of this limited edition, now d/c scent, I sought out a bottle, and was very pleasantly surprised.
It is a perfect ‘hot summer day’ scent: a balance of bright citrus and creamy white floral, but very sheer and fresh, as well as ‘office-friendly.’ I usually re-spritz in the early afternoon, and this allows be to be gently surrounded all day by its soft, bright sillage.
If we’d had ‘Leap of Faith Friday’ 2 weeks ago, this one would have been my SOTD. I can already tell that it’s going to get a lot of wear this summer!
That sounds really lovely!
FM Vetiver Extraordinaire today for me. Almost wore 7 Virtues Vetiver, so we were almost cousins, Robin.
Leave work early day,eh? Who am I to argue?
Almost cousins, and you smell fantastic!
I covet that scent (the Vetiver not the virus). I used to pop into the Barneys on the UWS just to spray it on hot days….
In preparation for tomorrow’s community project, each day since Monday I’ve been sniffing the unknown-to-me Missoni EdP. Through the week I sprayed it in the air, then on paper and fabric. Tomorrow I will give it a first try on skin.
So far Missoni is all about flowers and hints of fruit, smelling of perfume without feeling harsh or artificial. It starts out a bit fizzy then settles into a lovely hum of scent. It may be close to what I hoped (current) J’adore would be.
Wearing my favorite summer perfume, L’Artisan Parfumeur Nuit de Tubereuse, from my second 100 ml bottle. I can’t get enough of it in hot humid weather. If I’d reported my SOTD all week, you all would think I’m pretty boring 😉
It’s nice to be monogamous with your favorite scent. 🙂
Commando so far today (I’m sitting around waiting for a local charity to take away my sofa because my new one’s being delivered tomorrow).
Tomorrow will be one of two orange blossoms I’ve been wanting to try: 7 Virtues or JM Orange Blossom. Maybe I should try one on each arm?
I love orange blossom..one on each arm sounds lovely
Tried a leap of faith this morning, Sammarco Ariel, a huge nope for me. I’m not sure what goes into his Sammarco-ade but it really takes over. Maybe it’s a patchouli or vetiver? Cant quite put my finger on it but I don’t care for it with the powdery flowers in Ariel.
Anyway, I’ve scrubbed and drowned the remains in a hearty dose of Tabac Tabou.
The Sammarcos haven’t hit skin for me yet as the first sniffs were not good. Glad you have something good on now!
I’m surprised to say, the chocolate one is the one I liked best. I usually don’t like chocolate in perfume but it is very dry and unsweetened.
Me too! I loved Bond-t! Getting a FB! I have to say it smells like a box of very good pipe tobacco to me, rather than chocolate. In any event, there is no sweetness in it whatsoever.
It is so animalic! Married with civet and patchouli. With very strong osmanthus — leathery, tobacco, tea, peachy. It is excellent.
I enjoyed Ariel as the powderiness reminded me of some Guerlains, and I generally enjoy green scents. I am still testing out Bond-T as the opening chocolate note is fantastic IMO, but it is not the easiest thing to wear.
Related, my husband is a fan of vetiver, so I gave him Vitrum. He sprayed and then accused me of trying to poison him, heh. All in all, not for everyone.
Tabac Tabou is great!
Yes it is. I’m really glad I bought a FB during the Beautyhabit sale.
Ariel is laden with civet; it smells close to urine at times. I find it difficult.
I am saving my Sammarcos for cooler weather. Summer is reserved for those I already know or that I can clearly identify as summer goodness.
The weather’s cooler and drier today, so Aromatics Elixir for me.
Planning to unplug from the internet for most of my vacation; will return for Fake It Friday. Have a good week, everyone.
Have a great vacation olenska or should I call you vacation baby? 🙂
I’m the almost-vacation-baby! 😀 😀 😀
(My spouse & I use that formula for everything: event + “baby” = nickname. New Haircut Baby, Day Off Baby, Comic Book Show Baby, and of course, Perfume Score Baby. Very versatile system.)
You smell wonderful! I love taking a few days off from the internet to refresh my mind, especially in the summer. Have a nice time away!
Many thanks. It’s so great to have a refreshing break, both from work and from the digital era. Off to churn butter… 😀
My version of churning butter is reading about Victoria’s vacations on Bois de Jasmin (gathering petals and making jams, gathering petals and making tissues…)
TISANE not tissues…mean spellcheck.
Oh goodness yes. Victoria would make an amazing life guru.
Good idea! I should try that. Enjoy your vacation.
Thank you much! Hope your week’s a good one.
Phew! Work done (at least until someone notices and dumps more on me). Now I can relax a little bit.
It’s cooler today, so I’m in Forest Walk by SSS.
Go home early day!!! Do it while you still can 😉
I think I might…
I haven’t showered yet today and so am in remnants… my b_ _ (errr undergarment) that I pulled from the drawer in the dark was surprisingly strongly scented with patchouli. I think the culprit must be AbdesSalaam Attar Patchouli…not a summer fragrance to put it mildly. And my wrists are still wafting Champagne de Bois from late yesterday afternoon. I daren’t add to this potent mixture!
I’m reminded of a post on Yesterday’s Perfume concerning an old ad for “Bou-K Bra,” which had a place you could stick a scented cotton pad…
Bou-K! Bou-K! Bou-K! That is fuel for laughter all day. Thank you!!!!!
Ditto!
hahaha, skimmed over this earlier, and didn’t get it…now I see–bouquet!
Champagne de Bois sticks around FOREVER.
SOTD is Eric Buterbaugh’s Virgin Lily of the Valley. It’s very soft, pretty, and unchallenging. Definitely an office scent, but very easy to wear. I get a lot of green-neroli-lily in the opening, but it settles quickly to a soft lily and musk, but in a very realistic floral bouquet kind of way.
If he ever decides to sell the 10ml travel size individually, I would buy in a heartbeat, but I just don’t find it unique enough to purchase a whole bottle, gorgeous as they are.
Perhaps a consideration for a split meet!
I’d love a sample set of his frags. Victoria over at EauMG has raved about them.
I know, I’ve only ever read/ heard positive things, and of the few I’ve tried personally, they are all very realistically flower fresh, perfect for spring. Used to be you could get the travel set for $250, but it’s jumped now to $315 :/
Think I may just buy a 5ml decant from StC and see how frequently I wear it. Also thinking about trying his tuberose, maybe it will be one I can get along with.
Yikes! Well… what the market will bear I guess.
dstsauve, if you live in the U.S., please email me. I may have something you’ve been wanting to try per your comments exchanges with Annikky :-).
Yesterday I went to Arielle Shoshana Scented Luxuries and had fun sniffing the just-arrived Parfumerie Generale line. I bought Indochine, which had been on my want list for a long time. I think I’ll wear it again today before I go back to sniffing samples from lines reviewed on Luca Turin’s blog.
The article “Which perfume best suits your hormones?” was in my iPhone news feed yesterday. Maybe it’s finally learning what interests me?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3620759/Why-hormones-help-pick-perfect-perfume-FEMAIL-finds-smells-help-attract-partner-survive-menopause.html
Lucky you!!–I wish I lived in the area. I’d love to shop there! Congratulations on your purchase.
Thank you, Suzy Q. The shop is beautiful and inviting, too. We are so lucky that Ari decided to do this!
I absolutely can’t wait to try out the Parfumerie Generales!
My phone is actually a little too sensitive to articles I’ve selected in the past. I now have to go out of my way to click current events articles–even if I’m not planning to read them–just so it stops inundating me with articles about cats. 🙂
LOL, I’d bet that an app that provided only articles about cats would be highly successful! (It probably already exists and I just don’t know about it.)
Arquiste’s The Architects Club today. I love it. I think Kevin made fun of it on this blog, but it’s terrific fresh-sown wood and vanilla.
hmm I think the Arquiste’s line is incredibly creative and balanced. I especially like Anima Dulcis and the other violet leaf thing….Aleksandr maybe?
Me too (I mean I especially like Anima Dulcis). I think I am somewhat anosmic to violet (and very anosmic to iris), so violet perfumes are usually under my radar. I believe though one can increaes sensitivity to a smell, so I am trying to smell as many irises as possible…so far Iris de nuit by Heeley and Orris Ochre by Soivohle are the ones I can smell pretty well, but they are quite similar to me (and quite unlike other irises)
Hmm violets I understand because of the ionones. But, iris is also a lot of ionones used to touch up. Iris de Nuit is a very nicely touched up iris. Interesting, but not the actual iris. If you would really want the natural orris smell, I recommend Iris Silver Mist (of course!), 28 La Pausa, and No.19 in the parfum. I had the chance to smell real orris absolute and irone alpha, and the most realistic are those. With roots and dusts!
Wow, I just read a short article on ionones (had to look it up) – ! That is super interesting. That explains it!
ISM is pretty much the gold standard. Luca Turin also recommended Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendre recently.
I have a sample of ISM, but I can only smell a very faint echo of a smell from it 🙁 Not even sure what it smells like
Both are very good. The carrot start of ISM is something everybody should experience, but it was the creamy and almost spicy iris drydown that won me over. In Iris Cendre the balance between iris and the smoky woods is similarly masterful.
Both feel seasonless and have plenty to say. Although Iris Cendre is probably more office-friendly, I personally like the boldness of ISM more.
Architect’s club is nice because it is not sweet at all. I like L’etrog from that line also.
I have a decant and will have to haul it out of its resting place!
Leap of Faith = Penhaligon Elixir
So good! Starts with a wonderfully radiant vetiver. Up close I can detect the hint of fruit (or this could be rose) used to brighten and add depth, whilst from afar the notes combine to give me the impression of cocoa! Middle notes give me the impression of a less smoky Tea for Two. Elixir also has a transparency to it that makes it office-friendly.
This is a lovely fragrance. I’ll be keeping my eyes out for a full bottle at the discounters. Very happy! 🙂
This is the only Penhaligon’s I’m legit interested in, nice to hear you like it!
Definitely recommend! Perfumed Court has samples starting at $3.50
Love that one, it’s been on my buy list forever.
Good to confirm I have great taste 😉
oh gosh I love Elixir! I bought it in London when the pound was weak and my willpower was weaker still & have not regretted it an ounce since. It does not last as long as I would like though, that’s its only drawback!
I sprayed x10 from my decant and can still detect it after nine hours. Perhaps you should try more sprays? 😉
Taking notes. Will try this the next time I’m near a Penhaligon’s counter!
Unknown Pleasure #4 is “Mistero” from Calé. I was tempted to use this tomorrow – the name is so perfect for a ‘blind test’ perfume that I’m sure I would have scored triple points. But it’s only a 1.6ml sample, and I have a very long day tomorrow flying to Dublin and getting a coach down to the West coast, so I’m holding something bigger back for that.
Anyway, I like ‘Mistero’ which has a boozy-sweaty type opening vibe, but in a good way, before settling down into something sweeter and smoother. The official notes are interesting:
top – rum, rhubarb and mint
heart – pimento, elemi, saffron and basmati rice
base – oak, oud, labdanum and musk
It reminds me of Arquiste’s Nanban – although I bet side-by-side the differences would jump out at me – and so I’m not sure I need it. But it’s a very nice scent indeed, and all the more delightful because I received it as an unexpected add-on to the Calé sample I wanted to try, “Fulgor” (not tried yet). The downside is it down’t last all day, but nor does it rush away – I reckon maybe 3 hours?
I’ll take “get to the office later” day!
SOTD is from the back of the drawer: Trish McEvoy Citrus Petals #8. One of my fav linden fragrances! Cheers!!!
There’s probably a day for that too 🙂
Went into the sample bin for something untested since not sure if I can play along tomorrow. MFK Cologne pour le Matin seemed like it would be work friendly. Not too interesting – just getting a lot of lemon. I like lemon, but my citrus needs are more than covered. Money saved!
Agree on all fronts–just fine for work, but even within that line, it’s one of my least favorites. Money saved indeed!
I like lemon, but I find it just to sharp/ shrill in this one and it doesn’t seem to lose that factor fast enough. I still occasionally put some on as a “palette cleanser” from heavier scents.
I’m wearing Book from the Commodity discovery kit. I thought it was appropriate since I’m a librarian.
Today I started out with TDC Rose Poivree to brakfast, a real french shower of that one. Still, did not last long in the heat, but I do like in the summer months best anyway. Something about it reminds me of freshly mown grass, does not smell like it but still.. something vegetal that fascinates me.
Carried on with Lys Mediterranee, that one sticks around and worked fab in the heat today.
*breakfast
Wearing OJ Tiare today…
It’s surprisingly green/fresh smelling to me given the name…reminds me of Cristalle actually…
Curious if anyone has tried OJ’s Made to Measure stuff…I wonder how they differ from the regular EDPs. Please comment if you’ve tried any vs. the regular EDP.
LOVE OJ Tiare, tied with Frangipani 🙂
Rainy and ick here in Houston today. Part of my drive to work was a little nerve-wracking, but I made it to the office and the rain has stopped (for now…). I’m wearing Byredo 1996 because a rainy ick day calls for it.
Some friends from Houston are supposed to come visit this weekend, so I’m hoping that your weather calms down too.
I hope so too. I also hope that any of our friends here in France and Germany are ok too. I’ve been seeing reports of some nasty flooding in that region.
Thinking about Houston – seeing the floods on the news is heart wrenching
1996 is such a warm, solid, opulently friendly hug of a scent! Take care on those roads!
Trying out SSS Nostalgie today. I think all I know about it is that it’s supposed to be a chypre? So I suppose it’s in line with the theme.
Perhaps I didn’t even know that about it – the description on the website doesn’t say much that actually suggests a chypre to me. Anyway, at the moment it smells like tony Sweet-Tarts, but there are intimations of other things on their way.
I liked Nostalgie. Smells like a more natural version of Femme to me.
I’m not sure I’m getting on with it today, to be honest.
SOTD = Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant
As refreshing as a virgin Mojito. I’ve never met a citron fruit in real life and would like to. Cedrat Enivrant got me through 2 showers a day New Orleans October heat and humidity. I recently started to use the Cedrat Enivrant shower gel and OMG, I want to shower all day every day – just marinate me in it and I’ll be an ecstatic camper!
Regarding the shower gel, my first experience was with Orange Sanguine. While the scent was fabulous, the gel was so thick that I could barely get it out of the bottle. My Cedrat Enivrant shower gel is about a year old and is more watery and therefore, more manageable. I don’t know if the formula changed or if age broke down the gel. In any case I love the new, thinner gel consistency.
Citrons are pretty cool looking-very dimply. And very fragrant, but not quite edible since they are mostly skin with very little pulp. I’ve had citron preserves, though. Good if you like that kind of thing. Too bitter for some folks I imagine.
I don’t like bitter foods but i’ve hear that bitter foods have health benefits like lowering blood sugar!
“Hey, I’m marinating over here!” ????
LOL, the only problem is puckered skin.
Wow. I didn’t know that they do shower gels. I have a sample of it that I need to check out soon.
I get the changed smell in the shower gel of Hermès, too. I have had them for a year as well. Probably the heat from the water.
I’m a shower gel junkie. I have a tube of the Voyage d’ Hermes shower gel and it was too watery – did not quite work with the tube packaging.
Oooh, I just rediscovered my sample of Cedrat Envirant. Thanks for reminding me!
Yay! I hope you like it!
Korean citron tea is the only experience I’ve had with citron. Very tasty, but too sweet to drink regularly. Great for sore throats.
And delicious mixed in plain yogurt — same taste, cuts the sweetness.
It’s overcast and cool here today. Does anyone else think that Infusion d’Iris Absolue feels like a “warm” iris? Maybe because it’s powdery rather than carrotty I perceive it that way. In other news, Delta is going to offer nonstop flights to London starting in the fall. I see a trip to Harrod’s, Liberty, and Les Senteurs in my future.
I couldn’t wear the Absolue in the heat. The sweet, powdery drydown out warms the cool, rooty iris for me.
Interesting question. I’m not sure how I read rooty along the warm-cool scale. It’s definitely less rooty than other irises I like and I had it on during a hot day yesterday and enjoyed it. Almost bought a FB in fact. But sweeter non-rooty irises like VC&A I save for winter.
I wish there was a non-stop PDX to Newark that is not a red-eye.
A pretty summer day here, everything is ‘soft:’ just enough sunshine, blue sky, gentle breezes and warm temps to make it a very pleasant summerlike day with not too much of any one element. My harmonizing ‘not-too-much-of-anything’ SOTD is philosophy Falling in Love Summer. The muted florals in the background create a softer and less sweet scent than the original, one of the few times I prefer the flanker to the original.
Robin, that photo of the Blue Mosque is beautiful!
I’m doing my Friday challenge scent today because tomorrow I’ll be around a perfume-sensitive relative. So…
My Leap of Faith scent is Ellen Tracy EDP. I’m getting some woody-spiciness, maybe from sandalwood? I don’t know where I got the sample or how old it is! (The top notes smell like they might be a bit damaged.) I don’t know what the notes are at all, so hopefully I get the extra credit points too!?
Extra credit for you! I’m chicken to wear something I am mot fMiliar with on a weekday.
* familiar. (where is spell check when you need it?)
Thankfully, there wasn’t anyone in danger from the experiment today. But, yeah, an unknown/untried scent on a weekday is a potentially risky move.
ninfeo mio, rather a lot of it too. checking cheap flights to Paris – a friend wants to go and who am I to deny her the pleasure of my company – and smelling of figs and swampy garden. Yum!
You’re a truly kind and selfless friend to put yourself out like that 😉
????
I do what I can to bring cheer to my fellow-men! I hope she won’t mind visiting a few perfume shops…
How nice it must be right now! And, you smell great. The fig tone in the garden is amazing in Ninfeo Mio.
I’ve only ever visited in July, always seemingly riding in on a heat wave. Paris is lovely but it gets beastly hot with all those wide avenues and sparse parks, so I’m looking forward to visiting in more humane conditions! The garden aspect of Ninfeo Mio really blooms in hot weather, I love wearing frightful amounts and then just oozing around smelling delicious.
After 3 migraines in 48 hours (wth?), chose low-key Jennifer Aniston Lolavie. It was relegated to my perfume purgatory drawer ages ago. Probably the migraine hangover talking, but surprised by how much I’m enjoying this one. It’s inspiration, Child, goes all behemoth-musk on me with a nuclear half-life. Guess Lolavie fits the bill when one should but can’t bear going commando.
3 migraines!? Wow
Take care of yourself
three?? I’m so sorry! That’s horrendous! I hope Lolavie is helping you ease into consciousness more pleasantly than going commando would.
Aw, thank you! Lolavie did the trick. The Angel food cake of perfume. All the pleasure of wearing perfume without the guilt of wearing it straight into migrainville. : )
I’m wearing Regime des Fleurs Dove Grey, as two people mentioned it yesterday. Unfortunately, this is my least favourite of the line so far – I usually love iris, but this is too metallic, too ozonic, too synthetic-smelling to me. I suspect you might feel totally differently if you like that type of aldehydes, I don’t – as always, YMMV.
In your experience with perfumes, have you come across any ozonic ones that you like? I haven’t really found one, except maybe Kenzo Pour Homme.
Everything that comes to mind is, I think, more watery than ozonic (I am OK with calone if well done). Is CK one ozonic?
I don’t think so, but I have a hard time trying to figure out what ozonic is in perfume. CKOne is way less harsh to my nose than L’Eau d’Issey. Do you mean the nose tingling effect?
I thought it was the least friendliest perfume I’d ever smelled
Yes, I find it very cold and artificial too. Have you tried others in the line?
Have you found one that you like enough? I think you were rather smitten with the bottles, just wondered if the contents matched the packaging.
Morena, NST. Friday: I’m not going to the office. Instead, I’m taking it easy, with just two phone “meetings” with students, between which I intend to tackle the hall cupboard, vacuum and mop the tiles, organise discardable things for an inorganic rubbish collection, bag up stuff to donate to the Sallies, clean the oven, wonder whether I really need that gorgeous striped jacket with rose pink satin lining (I definitely DON’T, but I’ll still wonder) and generally, as you can see, enjoy myself doing domestic things. The leap-of-faith perfume ‘I’ve put in for this orgy of self-indulgence is a Clarins called Eau Ensoleillante, which lovely Kanuka sent me last year when she was down-sizing her collection. I don’t know the notes, but taking it as a whole, it smells like the promise of summer, warmly floral (perhaps lily?) but not at all green, friendly, gentle, uplifting. Today is freezing by Auckland standards (5 currently, heading for a high of 15, Brrrr!) but very clear, so the gentle waft of a sunny day is very welcome.
I hope you had a happy Friday. I am heading off to ChCh so may do some perfume research at Ballentynes. Have a good weekend.
All the recent discussion of Parfum de Nicolai has inspired me to wear Maharanih this morning. I haven’t worn it for ages and don’t know why – I love it.
I’ve never smelt that, but I think it sounds wonderful. If I weren’t going to buy stuff in Melbourne, I might be feeling compelled to do a little blind buying. I see that PdN will post to us here Downunder, and I’ve been wondering about Alahiiiiiine too, just because everyone loves it so much.
Grabbed a never-tried sample of Jardin Sur le Toit. I’m enjoying it. Green, which I always like. Fruity, but not too sweet. I might have to leap into this again tomorrow….
SOTI’velosttrackofwhattimeitis: a spritz of Terre parfum from Dufry duty free. Hadn’t previously been a big Terre fan but this smells great, gotta go back and give the whole group another shot. Will also note for any other Terre fans soon to be or presently traveling, Dufry has a coffret with 75ml parfum plus a shower gel and aftershave for $118 which seems pretty nice!
SOTD was SJP Lovely. I don’t care for the top notes which smell kind of plastic-y to me, but that fades quickly. I rarely wear this but enjoy it when I do.
I recently got Premier Figuier Extreme for a song at a local discount store. I’m not really a huge fan of fig, but I wore it today and it’s winning me over.
