Happy Almost-Friday! And happy birthday to Loretta Lynn, who is 84 today. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Tauerville Rose Flash. Tea at the moment is some sort of Assam. I'm only halfway through the cup and I've already forgotten which one, which must mean that I need more tea.
Reminder: On 4/15 we're wearing rose for What's in a name, part 1 ("What's in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet").
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My favorite Loretta Lynn song:
Lovely picture!
No rose here
Berdoes Assam Tea seemed right for the hot Santa Anas blowing in today.
I envy your Santa Anas…
Me too! I remember when I was little, waking up on mornings when the Santa Anas had been blowing, and finding that the world had a new, lovely smell.
People always complained about the Santa Ana winds when I lived in So Cal, but I loved them 🙂
Devil winds…
Maybe the start of a new fragrance?
I love them also as long as the fires don’t start. And I love great pacific storms.
Wearing Une Rose Vermeille today. It’s another one in my collection that I keep forgetting about. I swear that this one has the lasting power of plutonium.
Yeah, that one sticks around. 🙂 I like it, mostly, but sometimes it’s just way too much vanilla for me.
I surprisingly don’t get a whole lot of vanilla but raspberry.
I do get that too, but it is gone fairly early.
Me too – mostly raspberry. Somehow it reminds me of Rochas Byzance, another perfume I dearly love.
I get a lot of raspberry, too, and it’s the only raspberry note I can think of that makes me totally giddy. URV is such a joy.
Scent twin! I think I have all Andy’s roses but decided on URV for today. Lucky for me I get both the vanilla and the raspberry!
ooh scent triplets! I get a ton of raspberry AND vanilla from it, pretty tasty. I’m not sure I need a fb but a close relative within borrowing distance might need one… I think I prefer the rose chypree for myself!
I wanted rose pure and simple today, so I’m wearing Rose Absolue by Goutal.
I really like that one. You smell wonderful.
The best rose ever!
I just found a small bottle of Rose Absolue online for a good price – I’m so happy to have this in my collection. All of Annick Goutal’s roses are fabulous!
You truly smell lovely. I love that rose perfume- so fresh.
Waring Divine’s Spirituealle today..Gorgeous Rose!
Tea Paris Breakfast
Mood: Ready to make some changes.
After some deep thought and support from my hubby, I have decided that I cannot work full time and manage two babies
Very glad to hear that you and your spouse can be on the same page with the working/child care issue. Hope you can get something positive worked out!
My sister took a similar decision – luckily she was able to go part time where she worked. But 2 children under 2 yrs old was pretty fraught for a while. Good luck!
Thanks, I am not sure if this makes sense, but the hard decision is not going back to work, the hard decision may be to stay home. I have had a great career for 11 years, and all the benefits of financial independence that go along with it. The truth is, my passion for what I do is not longer there, and the wind is out of my sails. My priorities have shifted, my 2 under 2 are now my focus. Even though today I am asking to go part time, my husband ask me “Are you asking for the money or asking because it will make you happy?” Hopefully some Divine Spirituelle perfume and some deep thought will help me come to term with the answer I already know.
Good luck figuring it out. It really is hard to stay home, just in a different way.
Thanks Robin, I understand what you mean, thats why its the harder decision. I also want the time to figure out what is my next step in my career and look forward to challenging myself and perhaps reinventing myself..
Good luck figuring it out. I chose to stay home and just now venturing out to part time work (although I did freelance work occasionally over the years). Starting a whole new direction and happy to be challenging myself with something new.
That is quite a major decision, but it seems like you’re ready to make the choice that will make you happiest. Good luck to you!
I think the hardest part is that you don’t know till you try. For most of my life I thought I wanted to stay home once I had kids, but after stubbornly sticking with being a stay-at-home mom for three years I realized I was not happy (an understatement) and decided to go back to work. At the time, my youngest was only 1 yr old. It was hard but turned out to be the best thing for me and my family – my two boys are teenagers now and I am still contentedly working part time. Good luck finding out what works for you and yours!
Struggled with this my whole career. It’s HARD.
Because I make more than my hubs, and have student loans for a few more years, I’ve worked full time all along. BUT, if money wasn’t an issue, I would have gone part time many years ago.
I love what I do, so I need to work….but my 3 kids need me more. There’s no balance for a working mom, but we do the best we can, and things tend to work out! 🙂 No matter what you decide, if YOU are happy, your family will be happy too!!! They’ll take their cues from you!!! 🙂
It’s not an easy decision, but it’s great that you have the option available, and I hope the change that at least *part* of your heart is already sure of will bring you all possible peace and clarity.
I left a fairly well-paying career to stay at home with my son, but I never had any passion for my job and quite frankly dreaded it most days. Money is certainly tighter, but it’s a sacrifice we make so that we can live a less hectic lifestyle overall. I truly respect those that work and raise children simultaneously – it seems incredibly difficult.
I can see myself never going back to work, and I can see myself returning when my kid(s) are slightly older – however in another field. If your job no longer provides the fulfillment you used to get, you could take some time to stay at home and use it to reinvent your career when you are ready to return.
Congratulations on reaching a decision! I hope it’s the right one for you and that it makes you happy!
Best of luck figuring out a schedule that works for all members of your family, especially you!
SOTD is “Paestum Rose” from Eau d’Italie. When I smell this ‘from the nozzle’ it’s a gorgeous scent that should suit me very well. But on my skin, the opening reminds me of olive brine. Then I get the artemisia; a short time later it all dies down and later still I get the rumour of a rose somewhere in the vicinity. So a bit of a disappointment really, although my wallet is smirking. :^)
I am one of the few people who find Paestum Rose acrid and sour.
I think I have to join you in the naughty corner. ;^)
The naughty corner… 🙂
I don’t care for it either.
Joining too. It sounds great on paper but on me urrgh
Twins, though I’ve never gotten the “olive brine” note. I’ll be on the lookout. 🙂 Paestum Rose is a beauty to me, and a study in gentle contrasts — pink and yet grey, contemplative and yet cheerful…
Testing PdN Rose Pivoine – I got a largeish 3ml sample because I was sure I’d love it. PdN, check. Rose, check. Peony, check.
I don’t – at all. It’s a big meh. I’ve come to realize that I do not particularly enjoy geranium, and there’s a lot of it in this. Yesterday’s Rose di Siwa, and the lovely but fast-disappearing-on-me DelRae Coup de Foudre (I swapped away my decant), suit me much better for a rose-peony mix. I might have to just cover myself in twelve sprays of YSL Paris Pont des Amours.
I felt the same way about La Fille de Berlin, I got a largeish full bottle..thinking I would love it..and then..meh
Speaking of roses, does your son have a corsage for his date? And a tux? Hope things turned out well and he is ready for prom
Yes, he does! There’s a small local flower shop and they weren’t too covered up with prom business to do the corsage. And the tux place charged us a $20 rush fee, but it looks like they will have the tuxedo here Friday afternoon. Whew.
So hard to imagine feeling meh about La Fille – it just about makes me swoon with joy and is definitely up there in my top 10 most favorite perfumes of all time.
And Mals, have you tried AG Quel Amour? Such a pretty rose/peony.
Thats great that you love LFdB so much..I hardly ever reach for my bottle. When you finish yours, reach out, maybe it can find a way to your home.
Quel Amour is nice, too, but I didn’t love-love that one either. Can’t remember why. Should retry, if I can find my sample.
One nice thing about having Rose Week is that it’s forcing me to organize my samples better (i.e., actually PUT THEM AWAY in the divided plastic box by house, so I can go back and find them).
I loved La Fille de Berlin, and then I smelled Mohur Extrait, and now La Fille languishes neglected in the bottom of a drawer….
Lanvin Arpege EDP, rich and enveloping.
🙂
*makes excuses to sit near Bear*
🙂
Is the current one on the market in relatively good shape? I smelled it and thought it well-done with a harsher materials, the base is on the soap side and the sandalwood screechy. It came out at around the same time as Bois des Îles, but look at the price difference now 280USD vs 28 USD! It makes me wonder whether there has been ‘downgrading’ of materials since the ingredients required to maintain the original formulation must be prohibitively expensive by now.
Hello Nick!
I have a Cosmair tester from the mid 1990s, I don’t know the most current version.
Nothing screechy, very animalic from the ambrein.
Not an exact match to vintage, but definitely Arpege. I think you would like it. 😉
I think the next thing, when my finance permits, is wading through that terrain of vintage hunting.
I have a current bottle which I really like. To me it’s a softer, sweeter, and warmer Chanel No 5. The vintage extrait I have has vague similarities but I think they qualify as different scents.
I think the current version is thin in the drydown (where the vintage is spectacularly rich and woody), but not horrible at all.
The nice thing is that vintage bottles are available because it was so popular in its day. Of course the usual warnings apply to buying vintage on ebay (go for boxed if possible, and don’t spend more than you can stand to lose if it turns out to be age-damaged).
I’m wearing Czech & Speake Dark Rose. Its one of my favorite rose scents.
Loretta Lynn looks great nowadays, and she was downright adorable in the video you posted. I remember first hearing this song when the Coalminer’s Daughter movie came out. Great movie!
On a side note, I’m leaving tomorrow for a bridal shower in Chicago. The shower will be for my future daughter-in-law, who is from there. Any good perfume shopping anyone can recommend in the Chicago area?
Merz Apothecary! (Have never been there, but always wanted to go).
If you are in the Gold Coast, I love Barneys, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. The people at Saks were especially generous with free samples when I bought my by Killian Rose Oud there recently. I second Merz Apothecary, which is in the Lincoln Square area – my old neighborhood. It’s lovely, and has far more than just perfume. Loads of soaps, lotions, candles, homeopathic medicines. A very unique store that’s been around forever.
Thanks for the recommendations. I put Merz on our itinerary. I’ll also check out Barneys and Neiman Marcus. Are they close together?
There’s a Saks here in my hometown, but if I have chance, I’ll try to stop in there also.
I really have no plans except to walk around after breakfast. Our flight gets in really early, and our future in-laws have invited us to breakfast. The shower will take place on Saturday afternoon.
I’m a reluctant rose-wearer but it’s my only non-office day this week so I’ve been making progress on the sample backlog. Started with L’Ombre dans L’Eau EDP – not bad, but more green than rose and a bit sharp for me. Then I tried a couple of dabs of Rose Anonyme around lunchtime but No No No. So I washed both of those off and put on Aramis 900. I got a cheapie bottle from TKMaxx and do rather like it. It would be excellently dandyish on a man. Tomorrow there will be no roses!
Love Aramis 900, I’ve been wearing it since my college days. 🙂
Rose Anonyme was a big NO for me as well.
SOTD: Safran Troublant (L’Artisan Parfumeur).
Yum.
I really need to wear it more often. Almost wore Perles today but decided for creamy instead of peppery.
I’m planning that one for tomorrow – it’s simply beautiful.
I think I gathered from one of the “25 Rose Fragrances” list comments section that “Knowing” is a rose parfum of sorts. I intended to wear that today and just ended up wearing more Putain des Palaces instead. Whoops. Maybe I should try to find a skanky rose to wear? XD
There is still some rose in there, isn’t there?
I actually can’t tell! I get the initial powdery attar, fresh sweat and dirty hair, and then I get powdery skank and hot buttery leather. But no rose. Granted, I don’t have an experienced nose. 😉
There is rose in PdP, but it is very much in the background.
I think that once I found the rose in Parfum Sacre, I was much better able to smell it in many things.
Soivohle Quan Yin here. A mouthwatering rose-dominant floriental, now sadly discontinued. A perfumista friend gave me her bottle, which makes me one lucky lady.
That’s nice stuff. I think I have a sample of it knocking around somewhere.
Good lord, I’m actually awash in rose samples. Could do a whole Summer of Rose with a new one every day, probably.
I have a sample of this somewhere too…. Now I’ll have to find it!
It’s so worth the hunt. Truly one of my favorite roses.
Oh, please please do! A Summer of Roses would be splendid.
Perles de Lalique. The thing does not get any wear; the rose week is a good stimulus.
Almost reached for Perles today, but went with Safran Troublant instead. I also don’t reach for it nearly often enough, will hopefully remember this tomorrow! 🙂
Feeling better today. After yesterday’s grump fest I went out and ran almost 5 miles and did more body weight exercises when I got home. Nothing like some good exercise to tire out the sh**sville attitude.
Today I am sore, but that’s fine. I’m used to that. Of course, I couldn’t go rose week without wearing Lyric.
I wore Lyric on Tuesday..so beautiful.
I know you don’t have a signature scent right? Lyric could be yours 😀
Ha! That’s what ihadanidea said! I do love this one a lot, but it’s on my only favorite. Since I bought it (the “family sized” bottle) I’ve been taking advantage of wearing it a lot. I usually don’t wear Amouage scents in the summertime though – they can be a bit too heavy for me.
only one of my favorites* is what I meant to write. Wow, really need more tea…..
They are a bit heavy-but so beautiful.
Not very popular, but I found Ciel and Honour to be nice in the summer
Hey Twin. My SOTD is Lyric as well. Unlike you, I like to wear Lyric occasionally during the summer. The heat really amps up the incense on my skin. Although I’m very careful to wear a light application. I’m very impressed by your workout regimen. I have to get back on track.
I LOVE all the incense in Lyric. To me, it’s actually more of an incense fragrance than rose, but the rose is there. I usually like to wear Nuit Rouge in the summer because it’s grapefruit and incense and is a bit lighter feeling as well.
I’ve been slowly working my way up to my 5 mile runs that I used to do a few years ago. This winter I started adding a lot more body weight/ weight training exercises, which have REALLY helped to tone/ shape up some areas. Even on days I don’t run I usually do at least 15 minutes of weight training so I don’t lose any of the work I’ve put in so far.
You both smell wonderful. The first time I sampled Lyric was during the summer. I agree that the heat really makes aspects of it bloom.
I’m in lyric, too. I knew I’d bust out this sample before the week was out and my good mood and the sightly cool weather called for it. I get a little incense, but more rich, chewy rose…
Chanel Misia today, which is more violet-iris than rose on me, but whatever.
I imagine the Empress must have loved it 😉 violet, iris, and a bit of sweetness from rose. Understated elegance. Period.
well, ‘would have loved it’
Oh, I think she would have totally loved as well! With all her grooming rituals, she really did like the idea of looking and smelling very fresh.
I think so too! Misia would be perfect for Sissi 🙂
Twins!
Joining you today in Chanel Misia. I just could not resist the tiny purple violets blooming blussfully in my garden, basking (like me!) in the sunshine and spring warmth that has finally arrived here.
Jacomo Parfum Rare EDT. The top is mostly disintegrated but what’s left is a BIG, raunchy carnation chypre, tons of extra-dirty patchouli and oakmoss. Hard to believe it was launched in 1987: it seems like something from the fifties or sixties, if not earlier.
gosh this sounds beautiful! Must track this one down
Sounds wonderful. Wonder if I could handle the patchouli? Sometimes it works but often it’s a nightmare for me. I think it depends on the quality and its supporting cast. I love carnation and oakmoss so I’ll have to put this on my list of things to sniff if I get a chance.
Patchouli and I are likewise only sometimes friends, but when it works, it really works. Parfum Rare is long discontinued but it was relaunched as Coeur de Parfum (in 1987 — despite what I said up there, the original was launched in 1985, apparently) and can still occasionally be found online. It’s so great.
So I’m finally wearing a bit of rose this week – the cheap thrill (free with purchase, it doesn’t get much cheaper than that) that is Yves Rocher’s Comme Un Evidence. It kind of reminds me of L’Artisan’s Rose Privee. I might have to make it this weekends project to compare them properly…
I am wearing FM Une Rose today. I find this more of a cold weather scent and it was perfect for today. It is really strong, even a small drop stays with me for the whole day.
All you need is a red wine to pair 🙂
You smell divine. I am thinking about this one for tomorrow.
Love this one so much. I may wear it tonight when I have to give a talk.
I’m wearing Dame Perfume’s Peach Blossom, Violet, and Vanilla edt.
Quick question: What are your thoughts on shipping through online discount sites? Specifically Fragrancenet. Thanks!
Fragrancenet gets to you rather slowly, but everything I’ve bought from them arrived safely and was as-advertised.
If you have Shoprunner, you get 2 day free shipping with only $25 minimum order. Anyone who holds an Amex card is eligible I think.
I meant shopping. 🙂
I have had good luck with everything I’ve bought from online discounters, including Fragrancenet, Strawberrynet, Parfum1, 1st Perfume, or… gosh, what was that other one? Can’t remember. Then again, I’m not usually buying anything particularly expensive.
Beauty Spin?
No, that one is new to me. Haven’t ordered from them. I think I mean Beauty Encounter.
I have used them with good results. Like Mals, nothing too pricey.
Once I discovered that fragrancenet carries Serge Lutens, Amouage, Annick Goutal, L’Artisan, etc. I went a little crazy and have ordered many perfumes from the site. I’ve never had any kind of problem.
When I am ordering discount fragrances, I almost always order from Frag net and I’ve never had a problem with that site either. I consider them to be very reliable.
I’ve purchased a few Amouages, L’Artisan, and others from Frangrancenet and never had any concern or regrets! Great deals, still wrapped in plastic film in the box, juice in good condition! I would do it without hesitation (unless your wallet is hesitating!).
how do you like the Peach blossom, violet, and vanilla? I was actually going to order that one this week.
I ordered a trial size and am testing it for the first time today. So far, I think it’s very pretty, although it’s more “clean” than what I normally go for… Was hoping for more vanilla and less floral. I’m enjoying it a lot, and I can’t imagine it offending anyone.
I’ve had good luck with Fragrancenet and Beautyspin. The important thing is to compare prices to be sure you are really getting a good deal.
I have had a good experience with fragrancenet. I bought a tester bottle of Amouage Epic Woman (it’s the regular beautiful bottle only without a box) when they were having a 30 percent off sale, so it was a great price. And the perfume was perfect. No problems at all.
No issues with Fragrancenet, Beautyspin or Parfum 1. You can also get better prices on exclusive niche scents not available at the discounters by buying from European sites such as First in Fragrance, Essenza Nobile, Premiere Avenue, etc. The prices in europe are lower than US prices once they remove the local VAT tax, which they do when shipping outside europe. EN does not charge shipping to the US for orders over 180 euros, FiF charges 26 euros, but even with the shipping charge you are saving money as the price is often 40% lower than what we are paying in the US.
Thanks Cazaubon! This is really good to know.
I’ve had a half dozen very successful orders with FragranceNet, no exceptions. I will mention, I use my ShopRunner account (free two-day shipping) so I’ve never noticed slow turnaround, but I don’t know how it would go if you used their shipping.
I’ve also ordered from HauteLook and that does take quite a while, but they make very clear that their business model for perfume is to wait until all the customer orders are in to place one big order with the manufacturer (evidently, this is partly why it’s so inexpensive.) But then they have to wait for the manufacturer to fill their order before they can fill yours, and how long that takes can vary, I think. Def only buy from them if you don’t mind waiting + a bit of uncertainty about how long you’ll be waiting.
I found Fragrancenet very reliable and very cheap. A few months ago they stopped shipping to New Zealand, which is a huge disappointment, but I’ve recently tried Beauty Encounter, and they were very prompt.
SSS Velvet Rose today. Bigger than I remembered from my first sampling and I am afraid I have over sprayed! I think it’s too much of a soliflore for me but it does remind me of my mom who wore Tea Rose.
Yeah, it can be a bit effusive. Somewhere I have a tiny decant I kept from a bottle I swapped away.
Gah, my sample stash is getting embarrassing.
It certainly has sillage but I adore it on people who can pull it off. It has a strongly rosy presence without a trace of screechiness (at least, on my mum who gets complimented frequently on her perfume). I really have to be in just the right mood to wear it, or it feels like being smothered in a giant rose blanket.
“Giant rose blanket” sounds about right!
I actually have some trouble with the patchouli in it, which is why I didn’t keep my bottle.
Yes I’m getting the rose blanket right now (3 hours after applying). Will use a gentler hand next time!!
I love Velvet Rose. SSS roses (Rose Musc and Velvet Rose) were my first bonafide indy house purchases. I wore Rose Musc for my summer day time garden wedding, so it is special to me.
I mean to say I wore Velvet Rose for my wedding….
Twins. I feel like a big, floppy, light yellow-colored rose–in a good way. But I may have over-applied too… oh well.
Nothing yet. Having one of the those gray mental days where everything (even applying a spritz) seems like Too Much Work.
I have too many of those. Still waiting for spring. I hope your gray day brightens soon.
That was me yesterday. I hope your day gets better.
Wishing you a better day.
I have lots of those days. Hope the fog clears for you.
Inspired by Arpège from Bear, a dab of Bois des Îles parfum that I have saved money for over a year to buy the 7.5 ml. The first extrait in my life.
You smell great Nick !
I wore BdI parfum last week.
Do you happen to like Samsara?
Samsara is fantastic! There are many concentrations and versions, sampling is the way to find your best fit.
Apparently, sandalwood fiends 😉
BdI is a good one to pick for your first extrait! Gorgeous!!!
I didn’t dare open it and took it back to the counter the week after to learn how they pried open the ‘baudruchage’ seal and actually applied it at the counter with this ceramic stick from Chanel. Wow.
Bois was also my very first extrait! Got mine last summer. Enjoy. 🙂
Congratulations!
You smell FANTASTIC. Hajusuuri gifted me with a sample of the same extrait- the first in my life as well- and my goodness! Even the next day, after exercise and a shower, I could still smell Bois all through my clothes.
I just did not want to wash my perfumed clothes hahah.
SOTD Aedes des Venustas Palesander d’Or (sp).
I couldn’t commit to Pallisandre. What do you love about it, Filomeba?
aspara, I simply just like the way it smells. I think all the Aedes have a similar feel and smell that is uniquely that line. I’m looking forward to trying the latest one. I also like the fact that this line only introduces one new fragrance a year instead of churning them out like crazy like some other lines.
Me too, I just think it smells so appealing.
You smell lovely. Palissandre d’Or is on my list for a FB, as soon as I can get to a country where I can buy it. I haven’t been able to find anywhere that will ship to New Zealand.
BPAL “O” -honey, amber, and vanilla.
I haven’t tried any BPALs yet but they sound so interesting. I find the website and all their choices a bit overwhelming. Any others you’ve tried and recommend?
I second this, and would love to hear suggestions/recommendations
Their website can be overwhelming for sure! Each scent is linked in some way to a literary or artistic work, historic event or person, etc., and there is a lot to wade through. I find I learn something new each time I visit the site. Probably best to start by doing a search of particular note you know you like and then work it down to what appeals to you.
I like:
1) O- honey, Amber, vanilla
2) Snake Oil- “exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla” (their best seller, I think)
3) Arrival at the Sabbath and Homage to the Devil- Bourbon Vanilla, benzoin, caramel, Mysore sandalwood, aged black patchouli, carnation, iris florentina
4) Mouses Long and Sad Tale- Vanilla, two ambers, sweet pea, white sandalwood
5) Antikythera Mechanism- Teakwood, oak, black vanilla, tobacco
I think some may be limited edition. Samples are cheap(er) and contain many uses as a little goes a long way. I like these when I need to wear something close to the skin. Hope that helps and I am not affiliated in any way, just sayin’ ????
See below! ????
Err, I mean above!
I’m wafting a cloud of Violet Blonde today – it’s hard to choose a Top Five, but this has to be in there somewhere. Ahhhhh.
Ormonde Jayne Ta’if. For tomorrow, wavering between washing my hair in Rose Jam, or going for tasteful dab of Amouage Homage.
On the subject of roses, I’ve replanted a couple of long-suffereing roses in my garden last autumn and they are doing great and sending new shoots all over. But still no flowerbuds. I do wonder if they are strongly frangranced or not. Last year they were close to dying (which is quite a feat, since rose bushes are very hardy) and I didn’t get to see any flowers. Wonder if they’re going to be red or pink, or whatever else.
I am diligently watching my roses for signs of life and buds now too, but it’s still a little early for us. I nearly buried my rosa Oklahoma last fall to protect it. I hope it lives because nothing smells as good as Oklahoma! I am seriously considering wearing Ta’if tomorrow b/c it is one of my HG roses. You smell fantastic!
Cool! Googles Oklahoma rose, it looks gorgeous!
I don’t know what variety my roses are since we inherited them from the previous owner (and I doubt he knew it either) .
Googling also revealed there’s a variety called “dioressence”. Now there’s an idea….
There is a great website called “help me find roses” that is invaluable for doing rose research and finding mystery roses. There is also a rose called Mitsouko that I’ve never seen in real life, but only in catalogs.
You’ve reminded me that I keep forgetting to take a cutting from my favorite rose bush. It’s looking sad and I need a back up plant in case it dies. I meant to do that last fall and forgot and I don’t want to miss my chance this spring.
Nothing yet, but after my shower I’m planning on a Tauer rose – probably Incense Rose, but may join Robin in Rose Flash, since I’m heading in to work this afternoon, and my boss loves that one. Tauer is the perfumer who first got me hooked on rose.
It’s like having a big bouquet of them in your perfume cabinet. Even though some are challenging, I like them all!
People keep mentioning roses I want to wear! Decisions, decisions! Today I went for Clarins Par Amour, a rather underrated jammy/woody rose.
Bookworm didn’t take her bottle of that to college with her… I could nip up to her room and steal a spritz.
You should!
Good Idea!
It’s almost Friday!! This is day 11 of my 12 day work marathon….I can see the weekend coming at last!
SOTD: Body Shop Red Musk. Tobacco musky goodness!
Smelly Confession: A few days ago I vowed (on this blog, no less!) NOT to visit the Sephora VIB sale. I deleted every incoming email. Was content with what I have! And then, on the last day of the sale, my coworker asked if he could use my VIB discount to order some Nirvana White and Nirvana Black for his sister? LOL So anyhoooooo…..since I was ordering anyway…..I ordered a sampler set from TokyoMilk Dark and L’Artisan. Both on sale. I mean, it was meant to be, right? Right?? 🙂
Absolutely right! In fact, since they’re samplers, you don’t have to count them for next quarter’s confessional. So, meant to be, yet didn’t actually happen. How’s that for justification skills? 😉
That is beautiful thinking!! LOL 🙂
SOTD is Miller Harris Rose en Noir. I would have a FB of this it were easily available. To me it’s like Kate Middleton with biker boots- classic, but edgy.
Though I haven’t tried Rose en Noir, I love your analogy!
Rose en Noir is so gorgeous. I got very lucky a few years ago to snag a used bottle on ebay. It does have a lot of rough edges which makes it fun to wear. Very lush and elegant too with lots of deep notes.
There is a fair amount of it on EBay right now. I just happened to be browsing the MH selection last night and noticed that it seemed to be having a moment.
Enabler of the day! Thanks.
It is really pretty. I used up a small decant and was sorry to see it go.
Every time it comes up, though, I feel compelled to say that it felt not like “rose in black” to me, but “rose in russet and olive green.” The tobacco and the spices come off to me as being very much a different color than black!
I would agree with your assessment – I always think of it as a roughed up L’Arte…
Living dangerously today in Rozy EDP by Vero Profumo. The first time I tried this years ago, the skank factor went off the chart, but today I’m enjoying the in-your-face rose, fruit, and honey. Though a little goes a long way!
Rozy in voile de extrait was the first one I tried from Vero Profumo. It was a rose with a deep kick. It was no longer just a rose; it became perfume.
You smell great!
The Rozy EDP is my desert island scent. I considered it this AM, but in the end, went with the simpler, but still lovely Hedonist Rose.
A-ha! Skanky rose sounds just up my … ahem … skanky spot. Will have to check this out. AFTER I use up at least five more samples. (Unless I find an incredible deal. Then all bets are off.)
I like Skank in my fragrance..is that wrong 😀
This one doesn’t smell like rose on me, just a milder version of Onda.
This one – and the other iterations – were all really sour on me. Sad.
Attrape Coeur today. I LOVE this scent, but it’s funny how rarely I reach for it. I think it needs just the right combination of cool, bright weather to feel neither too heavy nor too floral. It certainly doesn’t work on a very hot day in summer!
True – I also only reach for it in cool weather.
I wore Attrape Coeur on a day that turned out much warmer than I expected and it was more than a little overwhelming on the hot subway. Still absolutely beautiful, though!
I still have some in my decant, and I notice that I *only* wear it when it’s cold out. The amber overwhelms me, otherwise. (I never get overwhelmed by florals! :D)
oh, I love Attrape Coeur….you smell wonderful.
I’m reaching to the back of the drawer for one of my early days perfumista online purchases. SOTD is the original Stella that launched a thousand rose patchouli ships….
Stella is so great, a close friend of mine wore that all the time..
I love Stella. My first perfumista purchase.
I treated myself to a face mask this morning: Rosy Cheeks from Lush, which I thought was appropriate. Day 4 of rose samples: the kind of rosy Florabotanica (I haven’t tried Rosabotanica yet, which I heard was better?). Don’t think I like it enough to buy a bottle, although I wouldn’t mind getting an empty bottle of either, just because they both look so cool!
I wish they smelled better, love the bottles.
Day off today. I am wearing Salvatore Ferragamo Emozione. I recently received as a gwp. It is a powdery floral which demands nothing of me. Which is great for the day. It really is quite pretty.
I’m wearing Oud Satin Mood – someone mentioned it this week and it was the first rose sample I found this morning, so I thought it was a sign. I was in fact looking for Byredo’s Rose of No Man’s Land, but didn’t have time to search. So many people seem to like it, but I was not impressed first time around, need to try again.
Also, it was pay day yesterday, so I went book shopping instead of having lunch and ended up with something like 20 books. I’m still slightly high.
What are some of the books you bought, Annikky?
I bought about 10 Penguin’s little back classics (from Nietzsche to Austen to a Nordic saga), I really adore these. Such a great concept. Bought The People in the Trees (I’ve been reading the digital version and knew already I wanted it on paper as well), When Breath Becomes Air, To the Lighthouse (one Woolf I haven’t read), The Invention of Nature (about Humboldt), Between the World and me (trying to educate myself on race, as I come from a very white country), A Line in the Sand (about the history of Middle East) and a couple of others. And two cookbooks – the new Gwyneth Paltrow and The Saffron Tales (Persian food).
You are an inspiration to me! I have contemplated several of those books.
Right now I am listening to a lovely book about art – The Vanishing Velasquez, by Laura Cumming, about a little Velasquez painting that some book 19th century bookseller became obsessed about. Very educational about art, the Spanish court of the 1600’s, the history of art criticism, etc. Making my commute enjoyable instead of aggravating. 🙂
Well, let’s see how much of it I will actually read… But I’ve been pretty good this year – 24 books finished and counting. Your book sounds great, too – I always love books about semi-obscure things. Not that Velasquez is an unknown, but his work is not something people discuss on a daily basis. And the Spanish court in 1600s – even better!
Hi Annicky. What a great selection! I have been trying to broaden my reading this year by trying to read a book from every country and it’s been a remarkable experience as it has brought home the fixation Western literature has with realism and tight structure/ construction ( as a general observation ) and how this is deeply challenged by ‘world’ literature. Can you suggest a favourite Estonian author for me? Would be really grateful.
I am way too focussed on Anglo-American litterature, as I like to read in original and even my other ‘western’ languages aren’t quite good enough for that. I should at least get my German to a better shape (and French, but that has no shape at all yet). There isn’t too much of Estonian litterature translated, but I would recommend Jaan Kross and The Czar’s Madman in particular. I must admit it’s very traditional, a quintessential Western novel, but it’s good. It’ll give you a glimpse of Estonian history, the dynamics between Estonian peasants, the Russian Empire and the local German nobility.
It’s in my local library so I will get it today, thank you. I tried reading French and German in the original language but it became an exercise in trying to understand what was written rather than ‘reading’ so I am sticking to translations. I really like reading books that provide an alternative view to western colonial interpretations of place, for example Kamel Daoud ( Mersault Investigation ) as a response to Camus’s Outsider, or Malaysian writers ( after reading Conrad )…Maori/ Pakeha … That type of thing. If you like Virginia Woolf you might also like Katherine Mansfield’s short stories.
Nothing is better that a pile of new books, but my Kindle is getting the lion’s share of my book budget these days, as we have more books than shelves at this point! Love your selection. You’ve given me some good ideas for future reading. 🙂
Thank you! Have you read The Signature of All Things, by the way?
Love book shopping! Haven’t done it in awhile, since I’m running out of book space. So I tend to get books from the library first, and then purchase if I feel like I will want to reread in the future. Efficient, but not as much fun as actually coming home with a pile of books that are yours.
I sometimes get e-books first and then see if I want ‘real’ ones. E-reading is so practical, but I just cannot give up paper versions entirely. As we moved to Brussels two years ago and left all our books behind, there is still space in the house 🙂
Oud, vanilla and rose – that sounds really nice. Does the vanilla smooth out any sourness from the other two?
RoNML actually impressed me and that’s saying a lot since I find Byredo to be rather meh anyway. I know you love Pulp, but it’s a sour stink bomb of BO on me. Rose is the only one I really like.
20 books! That’s impressive! Hope you enjoy them all.
Yes, I find it very, very smooth and not sour at all. Not too sweet either, it’s very well done. I’ll definitely give that Byredo another try. And I know, on some people, Pulp just doesn’t work, but it’s great when it does.
I need to join the buy books instead of eat diet.
Getting very hungry by now, though 🙂
That is probably my favorite of the Oud Moods. I wish I were as good at reading books as I am at buying them. I admire your reading hunger.
I buy more than I read, but I still get through quite a few. I just love reading, but there are many ways to experience and learn – perfume among them 🙂
You can always eat later! And Ta- Nehisi Coates is a genius.
I’m a bit afraid of him, but determined to proceed.
I love nothing better than a big new pile of books. How are you liking the Yanagahari? I think it’s a great, if difficult, book and always wonder about people’s reactions. And did you read *A Little Life*?
I get a huge thrill out of my book hauls, I need to be a little bit careful with that, it’s addictive. But I do read many of them and I like to know that I always have choices, whatever reading mood I’m in.
I’m about half-way through with The People in the Trees and I love it. Although I suspect it’s one of those books that you don’t entirely know how you feel about until the end. Have been too scared to read A Little Life… Did you like it?
She’s one of a handful of truly brilliant US writers active now, in my view, so however you feel by the end, the ride is worth it. ‘A Little Life’ is weirdly constructed and emotionally devastating, at least for me, but also genius.
Who else do you consider truly brilliant?
I realized as I sent that I was in danger of sounding obnoxious and was asking for this question! There are lots of people I love, but I think in the U.S. right now poetry is a more incentive space than the novel, often in mixed forms. So Claudia Rankine, Maggie Nelson, Bhanu Kapil, Susan Howe – all poets who also wrote really interesting prose as well. Novelists that deeply move me, the way Yanagara does, and are formally adventurous the way she is: David Mitchell in the UK, although not all his novels equally, Ben Marcus is colder but brilliantly creepy and interesting, I thought The Goldfinch was amazing although I feel meh about Donna Tartt’s earlier books, Colson Whitehead wrote the best (non)zombie book ever, Lydia Davis is a genius short story writer . . . And there are dozens I enjoy deeply, but without the same fervor. What I get tired of is what I, like many, refer to as ‘the Jonathans’ – Frantzen, Foer, Lethem and many others not actually named Jonathan. Competent novelists whose books I tend to read, but that I think are wildly overhyped, at least in the U.S. My favorite Jonathan is Rick Moody, whose early novels especially *are* genius.
No, absolutely no obnoxiousness at all and I was honestly curious (as clearly you have excellent taste and judgement). Thank you for this thorough and insightful response, this is much appreciated. I often feel I don’t read enough of brilliant novels, but I’m spread rather thin: I also love nonfiction (especially history, but also science and economy and nature and art and anything that sounds appealing), esseys and even memoirs these days and I am a compulsive SF&Fantasy reader, plus the occasional thriller or detective story and it adds up… It’s even worse with poetry, I have read very little of it in recent years. Partly also because this is where I feel the limitations of my English most clearly. Thanks again for this.
That’s a cool list. I always think that David Mitchell’s writing has an aerial quality about it: if it was a perfume it would be mostly top notes. I was on a panel with him last year and he struck everyone with his warmth and thoughtfulness. He seemed very compassionate…an old soul in some ways. The book he did with the autistic Japanese writer is pretty extraordinary.
I know! Too many books and not enough time.
I completely forgot to post my SOTD yesterday, likely because I spent the day trying to escape it. I found an abandoned sample of TDC Kashan Rose and decided to give it a go. It was pure bliss for about four minutes, until the aroma chemical nightmare began. ISOe? If not, something similar that is used in quite a few rose scents. I scrubbed, I layered on unscented stuff, I tried to drown the remains in Epic, but I just ended up smelling Epic plus mildly burning nasal passages/weird taste in my throat that I couldn’t shake. It was so sad because the opening was beautiful.
Today I’m forgoing rose and wearing DelRae Debut. Also, I’m making a note in bold on my spreadsheet and putting yesterdays sample in the giveaway pile.
Yuck, sorry you had such a bad perfume day. Sometimes that first whiff of awfulness never goes away. I’ve not tried Debut, but it sounds lovely from what I’ve read.
Oh, I hate it when that chemical reaction kicks in. I get that badly from real bug sprays, and some perfumes that have that bug spray tang to them. Sometimes I feel sick for days afterwards. My sympathies!
Debut is a spring favorite of mine. There’s nothing greener!
I chose Rose Privee today.
It’s one of my favorites- I still haven’t worn it outside of the house.
Guiltily, I got my hands on some Putain de Palaces, which is my SOTD. I’m not getting much rose from the rose-violet pairing, but I love the powder. For a little while in there, the cumin borders on the edge of what I find palatable (I’m a wuss), when it fades, I’m left with something I quite enjoy.
Does anyone get a hint of the scent of bread from PdP? I’m almost not sure if I’m imagining it, but every so often I get the a very clear whiff of baguette. Mind you, that’s an enormous selling point!
I think the rice powder note can smell like bread or flour. I love PdP!
sotd: Diptyque Opone, lovely saffron rose
Dang, do I have a sample of that?
I bet I do. Now, where….
it was discontinued. but then Diptyque reissued it last year (in an interesting bottle but for much more $$). I am on my last drops of the original and trying to decide if I can live without it once gone… it kind of lives in the same space as Dior Gris Montaigne for me…so maybe not…but I do really love Opone (altho unsure if the new juice in new bottle is very different, so maybe that’s another issue entirely). oh, just realized what Opone is quite similar to….PotL Amaze…that’s the one.
Well, dang. I didn’t like A-Maze.
Sampling Chanel 1932 – thanks AnnS!
So far it is a sweet soapy floral – lovely, by not what I want at its price point. Considering how many of the Exclusifs I’m interested in, it’s a bit of a relief to not want another.
I am glad you are enjoying it. I had the exact same feelings. Ok-ish a tad lovely but only if not so $$$. It’s kind of a relief.
Exactly the same reaction here, too.
Beautiful picture!
SOTD = L’Occitane Immortelle de Corse
This perfume is GORGEOUS immortelle-flecked honey grounded by benzoin. Rose and black tea are listed as notes but my nose is not sophisticated enough to smell them; i also just get the faintest hint of iris and musk.
NYC fumies meetup tonight 4/14 6PM at OsswaldNYC.
Have fun tonight everyone!
I’m sorry you’re not coming but I hope you enjoy your event!
Really a shame that one got discontinued. I am not a huge immortelle fan but agree it was gorgeous.
Sampling Caron French Can Can from a sample sent to me by STC. Several hours into it, I really like this! Roses and green…tending toward Iris. Who knew?
I have a small sample of French Can Can, and I do enjoy wearing it from time to time. A little goes a long way!
Yea, I put it in the category of ” Really, Really French Perfume”! But it also reminds me of Magi Noire, but smells much better. I like the middle stages of it’s development the best.
Trying out Teo Cabanel Oha this morning and very much enjoying it. A super rose.
I’m very impressed by this house, so glad to have this sample set!
Oha’s lovely! And I think the sample set is a good value.
Did a big spritz of Couvent de Minimes Eau du Cloitre, which goes on lovely but lasts a very short time. I love it out of the shower in the summer.
Then I went with Rosine Une Zeste de Rose. Bothers me less….maybe it has lost something. I bought it in 2007 or 2008, but it has been kept out of light and heat. Maybe my nose has adjusted. Happy to have it!
Mancera Roses Vanille today… Trying to get through some of my less worn roses. I could easily do rose month!
Is that very gourmand? similar to Tocade at all?
It is gourmandy, but not exactly like Tocade, which has a bit of a plasticky note on me. This is more like a candied rose effect. It’s worth a try if you like Tocade though.
thanks. I actually don’t like Tocade so it’s more appealing to me that it doesn’t have that plastic note.
I think I’m going to do a rose experiment with one a day and see how long I can keep it going!
(Might finish this week and then restart later… spring is my favorite time to wear green florals, and I love love my green florals, so I don’t want to “waste” the weather, if that makes sense.)
Makes sense to me!
Imagine my surprise when I got an email reply the other day from the President / owner of Lubin Parfums after I’d asked about why Idole edt had been discontinued. I was floored that anyone would take the time to respond. Mr. Thevenin stated they want to bring it back in the same bottle next year but it won’t be easy to do. Of course I’m in Idole today!
wow..that was nice that they even respond
AH!!!!!! THIS IS HUGE NEWS!!
That’s pretty cool and surprising!
How exciting! I hope it can be done at a reasonable price.
Wearing Muguet Porcelaine today…(picked up a small bottle on Ebay from a seller who goes to France)
It is really, really lovely and very much agree w/ Robin’s review. It is just what you would expect from this line w/ a “blurred green backdrop” and lily of the valley poking through. I do find it slightly indolic but it doesn’t detract. And it is light…I sprayed liberally but imagine it will last 4 to 6 hours max.
Here’s hoping the next Hermessence tackles jasmine!
So envious, can’t wait to get my hands on this. I think I will need a 100ml bottle and a 15ml purse spray, due to it being a Hermessence.
So glad you liked your unsniffed bottle!
Chilly and rainy last night- so much so that the heat kicked on, and I had to go get my down comforter from out of the closet so that I could be cozy.
Got my Vitacost and Amazon packages yesterday and made a small bottle of my version own rose body oil. The essential oils are diluted and the jasmine sambacc is a blend of artifical and natural, but it worked out okay:
20 drops rose oil
5 jasmine
5 vanilla oil
3 geranium oil
Add to a base of about 3-4 ounces of plain sweet almond oil.
I did not use a fixative nor did I use an essence (this acts to dissolve and preserve the fragrance i oil) but that’s okay- I will use this up in a couple of months!
SOTD: Rose Jam shower gel +homemade rose body oil +Sycamore *(thanks, Hajusuuri!) I smell VERY rosy, woodsy and cozy on this windy, rainy day!
Heat! You have heat! I am so jealous. Our furnace croaked last weekend. Waiting for the part to come in… brrrr
OH God, so sorry! There is nothing worse than shivering in your own place. I have baseboards heating in my bedroom in my apartment, praise pasta, so there is that. It’s one pf my fears about (eventually) buying a house: that the furnace will go, and shortly everything with it!
Just put some Marni on. At first blush can’t smell the rose but the maelstrom of citrus and spice is so attractive. Waiting for the rose to peek out. For me, it still feels too chilly for Mille et Une Roses.
La Fille de Berlin today.
I may need to spritz this on after my Rose Vanilla dies down… Love this one!
Love. You smell amazing!
I’m in Prada Purple Rain today ♥
oooh! how is that? i want it for the name alone because Prince Purple Rain was among the first concerts I ever went to when I was 13/14 🙂
The name is gorgeous and so is the bottle. It’s heavy, with a magnetic cap and label with iconic Prada safiano texture.
The perfume itself is woody, buttery and powdery. Love it.
Oh, I have never sampled any from the Prada boutique line, even though they are by Daniela Andrier. The family seems to allow creative freedom for her.
I haven’t tried any of their first boutique collection of numbered fragrances and from Olfactories it’s only Purple Rain that I know.
I think Prada family worked with Daniela on so many scents now they can understand each other without words. I’m just glad she keeps making great fragrances under Prada label.
Does anybody have recommendations for a (relatively inexpensive) good rose-scented shower gel?
Our water is very hard, even with the water softener, so I try to avoid soap as I do NOT enjoy scrubbing soap scum off my bathtub 🙁 .
If you have a TJ Maxx near you check them out. I recently bought a few “jugs” of The Body Shop Satsuma (one of my all-time faves) as well as Crabtree and Evelyn Rosewater shower gel. The Satsuma isn’t rose but the C&E is rose and both are really nice. I got them for about 1/2 price.
Hi Mals. Hope things are okay. I have tried Dr Bronner’s Rose liquid castille soap and liked the rose scent. It is very gentle and comes in a big bottle but it more a liquid soap that gel so may not suit your purposes.
Bronners does have a wonderful and subtle rose scent HOWEVER it does form a film in hard water situations! 🙁
I love that stuff! And most of the other scents as well. That soap gets you squeaky clean. And the label makes great bathroom reading 😉 I keep meaning to watch the documentary about him.
I am wearing Eau de Polder (L’Essence de Mastenbroek). It’s an oil but is light and smells like wildflowers and hay – just right for a warm spring day.
I really liked it, when I tried a year ago or so, in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague.
Still no roses for me, and now that my samples are organized I’m dipping into the untested bowl. SOTD is Papillon Angelique, which opens on me with green bits and orris, then transitions to a vanilla with a few mimosa sprigs and a touch of powder.
Are you liking it? It was one where I had to have a bottle and now I want Tobacco Rose too. Oh dear.
I am liking it and I’ll use up the sample, but I don’t love it enough for a full bottle.
I can’t possibly be the only one wearing Mohur today, can I? I’ve got the extrait (thanks clarissa!) on one hand and the regular on the other. They really are rather different, aren’t they? I can’t decide which one I prefer… wallet says: use up that NV sampler before you buy a FB. (though I must confess that that sensible advice from wallet was not followed with regard to Trayee….)
I have FB of Mohur EDP on the way, purchases when I was close to the end of my small bottle of the coffret. I am hoping the extract will me my birthday present. And my next full bottle of anything is probably Bombay Bling. But then I wore Trayee last night . . . NV is killing me.
Purchased. Argh.
The two are so different, I cannot believe it’s just a different formulation. Need to stay strong and not get additional items from NV. Need to stay strong. Need to stay strong.
Ha! Me too!
In Encens Mythique, as I wanted a sure thing. Will start testing the last batch of samples/decants over the weekend…
Encens Mythique is great, you smell fabulous!
It is so sunny and Springy outside today so I doused myself in Jasmin et Cigarette with a smidge of Diptyque EI Jasmin.
Went back to my old apt last night and brought over my perfumes. Now I feel at home ????
Yay!!
Do you have a view on El Jasmin as compared to A la Nuit? I love the latter, but don’t wear it a lot as it is so intense. Wondering if there is something with the calming jasmine effect but a little less loud.
I would say EI Jasmin is a sweeter, fruitier(banana) jasmine. It’s got some intensity initially but softens fairly quickly. It smells more like Lush Lust but less bombastic. I prefer the EI to A la Nuit, myself. A la Nuit is more indolicand camphorous to me. Also, the ELDO is a lot softer than both, but with the added tobacco note. Almost hay-like. Hope this helps!
Yes thank you!
I know I’m supposed to be wearing roses but I’m waiting for some perfume bebe’s to show up. lol
So I plan on working out and then trying out my new goodies- specifically the new limited edition Chanel body oil. Can’t wait! Hope everyone has a beautiful and scented afternoon/evening! xo
Is this the No. 5 body oil? Need to check that out.
Yes, Gaia on TNB did a great review of it.
I’ll admit it got my engines revved up and I had already purchased it. lol ????
I was also intrigued by Gaia’s review – let us know what you think!
Friday here and I am wearing a rose oil from a very small ornate bottle given to my husband by his Yemeni student. It is deep and rich and powerful.
For the past couple of weeks I have been in a lot of pain from what I think is tennis elbow. Now I am finding it hard to grip anything so I might have to seek some kind of medical advice ( probably won’t though as I can’t be bothered). I figured out that it’s caused by throwing too many pine cones for my dogs. I’ve tried explaining the problem to them but they have shown no mercy. – we have a favourite spot in a steep avenue of pine trees, with a deep cushion of needles underfoot. Now the weather is colder the scent from the pine trees is by far the most noticeable feature on the hill ( very strong and piney rather than resiny) and the softer scents from ferns and native bush have really diminished. I love the way heat affects scent.
I’m sorry you are hurting. I have deep empathy for anyone in pain like this as I understand it all too well myself. I hope you feel relief soon. I also love that scent you describe, I too can understand the joy of this. I love the forest and all it holds, in every season.
You need a pine cone gun or a slingshot. Your pups will never understand if you stop playing so you’d better find a solution 😉 That said, I’m sorry you’re in pain.
One of those tennis ball machines would be good! They usually chase rabbits but Sprocket is a neurotic collie cross and gets fixated on things ( pinecones ) and starts nudging me until I give in. The problem is that they are mountain bike dogs so really fit and active.
Maybe check with a doc or nurse practitioner as sometimes there are fairly simple exercises or techniques that can erase the problem. I had really bad elbow to wrist pain and one quick ergonomic fix at my desk cured it. A hip thing that just the right stretch obviates. Etc. I hate going to the doctors, but sometimes they can really help.
How bossy was that? Sorry! I’ve been bossing students all day!
It wasn’t at all bossy! Hee hee. Just back from walking and I tried underarm straight arm bowling, left arm bowling, and kicking and earned a few disconcerted ‘really????’ Looks from Sprocket. The problem is that the last time I went to my doctor it was because I had injured my shoulder ( quite badly, it turned out ) from excessive frisbee throwing ( a fantastic ring frisbee that goes for miles and gets the dogs foaming with exhaustion ) so I feel a bit sheepish about going back. I am such a dork!!!
Pet related injuries are nothing to be embarrassed about! I once tore my rotator cuff reading a really big book. Talk about being a dork.
Snort!
Kanuka, I’ve had a bit of that from my unergonomic laptop, and just happened to copy down today some references on tennis elbow treatment:
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/25/phys-ed-an-easy-fix-for-tennis-elbow/?_r=0
http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2011/07/26/138614357/a-rubber-twist-on-treating-tennis-elbow-pain
The Theraband apparatus that they recommend twisting is available on Amazon in the U.S. and probably in your part of the world, as well. These references were in comments on a recent New York Times article – several readers said the exercises worked for them.
Thnks so much for showing me that. it looks like it could work, eh? I will give it a go. And if it doesn’t work I can always throw it for the dogs.
You have just earned your first ever ribbed rubber enabler pin!
🙂
I decided to revisit the original Agent Provocateur today. I had a small rollerball decant that I haven’t touched in a long time b/c AP didn’t agree with me. I still don’t love it, though it is a bit better than I remembered. I think what’s bothering me is that, especially in the beginning, there’s something almost sour there. Koenigsburg’s comment about getting an olive brine note from Paestum Rose got me thinking if that’s kind of what I’m getting from AP. I think the patchouli in this isn’t working for me. It’s kind of like a drier Voleur de Roses, which I also didn’t care for because the patch came off kind of cloying and syrupy to me.
Verdict: maybe I’ll come around one of these days but at least for now I know I won’t be seeking out more if I manage to use up my decant.
I fell out of love with that one and couldn’t wear it anymore. It is a bit sour for me, too, but mostly a bit too loud and harsh on me.
Robin, I also chose Rose Flash today. I ran out of rose options that were already out and unpacked from my recent move, so I had to root around in a couple boxes. Luckily, I stumbled upon a sample of Rose Flash because I haven’t located my roll-on bottle yet. It’s perfect today!
Hey twin!
Blackberry & Bay. I have some samples I’m wanting to wear but my sinuses have been pretty fickle lately, so I’m refraining from anything too challenge ’til I’m sure I can enjoy it properly.
Friday–Go To Visit Mother-in-Law day–and I’m off the rose project (wearing the ever-soothing Traversee, just because), off my head (I’m nearly 64, for goodness sake, I’ve been married to the dear man for nearly 45 years, and I’m scared of nothing, except –I’m whispering shamefacedly now– this miserable old besom, his mother), and off topic–I should be talking about scent! So. Traversee is soft and sweet on this cool morning, and smells of things that are comfortably interesting but not so compelling that they take a lot of energy to process. It must be the easiest scent I own. It’s like a friend who stops by for a cup of tea, meets conversation about profound things or total trivia, joins in incidental hilarity or sits very quiet and thoughtful, and never overstays a welcome– adaptable and considerate, in other words, but not boringly compliant. I love it!
Hope the visit goes as well as it can! The right perfume will certainly help 🙂
Hope so! Last time, she didn’t speak to me (that was a blessing) but she pulled faces at me when the dear one wasn’t around, which only made me laugh, so I got through OK. She hates perfume, and dogs, most people, onions, feijoas, berries, sauces and all spices, Kapiti ice cream (how can anyone?), all her home help, and she has something small wrong with ABSOLUTELY every part of her body. I told my sister this, and my practical sibling said, “Surely she can’t have anything wrong with her hair?” But Ma-in-Law even has a creeping scalp! If I knew what that is, I’d maybe find some sympathy, but it just sounds wildly improbable to me…my sister and I ended up helpless with laughter, in a very disgraceful way, though not in front of MiL.
I understand only too well. My MIL died a few years ago, but before that I just had to come to a compromise with my husband – I would visit over the Christmas holiday if I could stay home on all other visits (luckily she never came to our house).
She sounds a little like John Cleese’s mother. Who apparently used to be afraid of practically everything. He talks about her in a very funny way.
Excellent choice, waterdragon, I must file the idea of TdB away for future reference in difficult situations. 😉
After being sick last night with what must have been food poisoning, I finally went and showered about 2pm. I put on a light application of Scherrer 2, one of my favorite comfort scents.
Ugh, hope you are back to normal soon!
Food poisoning is the worst. I hope you’re feeling better now
Waterdragon, you do say very funny things. Just so you know, Traversee does have some rose so you are MIL-compliant as well as NST-on topic.
Oh, eggzellent! I’d rather comply with NST than MiL…
It’s true, PrincessTonk: waterdragon cracks me up! 🙂
Nahema for me today. Really enjoying rose week 🙂
I loved that when I wore it the other day. Rose Muscle, my new tough perfume!
Never underestimate the power of a rose! 😉
LOL!
I confessed to a friend that I collect perfume, and he said he was intrigued by a British perfume he’d read about that was described as freshly washed laundry hung outdoors to dry in a sunlit meadow.
After hurting my head to think what that might be, or what truly worthwhile perfume might satisfy the urge to smell like that (which is on some level perfectly reasonable but anathema to my own concept of perfume), I have taken shelter in SL Iris Silver Mist. Which may, strangely, be the same idea with a dark, Gothic twist.
Sounds like “Lye” from Maison Gabriella Chieffo, although that’s Italian.
