I'll be spending Garage Sale Day on the nation's highways. Hope the rest of you will be doing something more fun, even if it doesn't involve a garage sale. And I'll be home, hopefully, by tonight, so expect posting here to return to normal on Monday.
Meanhile, our standard open thread: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the fragrance you think you ought to wear more than you do, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Garage sale day. That’s appropriate. I’m currently selling some unwanted perfumes on a free online classified site, and OMG people are SO rude! I’m selling them all for extremely reasonable prices, but people try to buy them for next to nothing, then get all passive aggressive when I explain my prices are CHEAP. Comments like ‘well i hope you get what you’re asking for. Have a nice day :)’ For real?? And text msgs at 3am. And no-shows. I cant believe the total lack of manners!
Rant over 🙂
It’s cold, dark, wet, windy and Im at work til the wee hours of the morning. Embraced winter in lashings of Habanita (shower gel, lotion and perfume) ahhhhh 🙂
I am sorry people are being rude to you. I work in retail, so i know that the public can be awful sometimes. You should tell them that you would rather see your perfume down the drain, then in their greedy little hands.
I’ve worked in retail and hospitality and have known rude, but this is not what I expected. It’s like because they arent face to face they can do away with any courtesy at all. Believe me, I have felt the urge to put them in their place many times, but they have my phone number and email address… it may lead to months of hatemail :-/
I did meet one very lovely person, a local perfumista boy! I met him and swappped some Guerlain for some Xerjoff. He has some great stuff for future swaps! And impeccable manners! 🙂
I am glad you met someone who is nice! That is one of the perks of working with the public, finding the good ones!
Omg, impeccable manners are worth their weight in gold.
Hello, Silver Lining 🙂
I tried this too and had the same unpleasant result…”I’d give you $5″. Gee, thanks.
I think some people are just wired for financial gain, where I just can’t relate. I could use a little more of that, actually. Maybe putting in your ads, “Prices not negotiable” would weed some of these folks out?
Oh they do say that! Lol. The shop sells it for $180, my price is $50, and they offer $20. Yeah right. I’m quite firm with them now, i was friendlier to start with. But middle of the night calls just p***ed me off.. lol
Is this Gumtree? A bunch of us on Facebook were comparing notes about selling and buying on Gumtree the other day. Very mixed experiences. 🙁
Yes, Gumtree. I’ve only bought before so hadnt experienced this side of it before!
Hello Everyone, I’m checking in from Kiel, Germany, our first port after boarding the ship at Copenhagen! Would you believe in this tiny (by my oversize city standards), there’s a parfumerie that could rival a mid-sized Sephora But also has Serge Lutens. I ultimately did not buy anything because I’m “working” towards a perfume reward. If I walk 120,000 by August 19, I will reward myself with a bottle of perfume < $300. If I walk 150,000 steps, that budget doubles and I will give myself permission to buy this ridiculously priced bottle :-).
I am extremely motivated to keep moving.
I'll check in again when I can!
Have a wonderful weekend.
WALK WALK WALK WALK WALK!!!! Earn that perfume!
Europe is the PERFECT place to achieve your goal.
I love it! Get your walk on! Lol! Good luck.
Walk towards your favorite bottle, lol!! If I was going in that price range, I’d get some Amouage Beloved!!
It’s good to have goals and even better to reward yourself. Walk on.
What are the reward perfumes your aiming for?
Yes, dying to know which bottle is on the line here!
Hi hajusuuri! That’s an excellent strategy! I need to get my butt in gear and do something along those lines…
Hi Hajusuuri–hope the vacation is fantastic. What a worthy fragrant goal!! I am going to want to hear all about your travels when you return, promise you will post so that I can enjoy a vicarious vacation!!
Go Go Go!! I signed up for the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in NYC and plan a trip to Twisted Lily as a reward!
That’s really awesome of you.
Thanks! I am basically a couch potato so this is big stuff for me!!
Seriously doubly awesome then. Thank you.
That’s awesome! I’ve never been to Twisted Lily(and live in NYC. Shameful.) Let me know if you want company.
That would be so much fun and I hope to take you up on it. I actually live near Chicago and would be staying in NJ before and afterward but am hoping to spend a few days actually in NYC.
Great incentive!
What are you even doing here?!! Unless you’re typing as you’re walking, go away! :))
Enjoy your time on the highway and drive safe!
I am working today – blah.
No perfume today- but I showered myself with cherry blossom shower gel and cream afterwards. 🙂
I was thinking about a perfume I would wear more often and it would probably be Samsara- i am not sure why it gets left out of my rotation.
Samsara. Yes. I hinted at my mum to pass down her vintage Samsara until she caved 😉 (she has anosmia, and hasnt worn it for years so I wasnt being toooo cheeky) but I havent worn it much. It’s such a BIG fragrance maybe my memory of it scenting the whole of 1989 intimidates me 🙂
Happy Saturday Everyone! Wearing Dark Horse by Dame Perfumery for the first time today. Really liking this one. The dry down is absolutely beautiful! I am constantly sniffing my wrist. Possibly a FB purchase in the future.
I have a question for you as I know you have used the Aerin fragrances. Which ones did you like? I have not tried any, but many sound like ones that would interest me. Thanks.
My favorite is IKat Jasmine. I really like the Rose De Grasse too and Evening Rose. If you are able to wait until the holidays, she usually has like a gift set with all of the scents (small mini spray bottles of course). Don’t know if Nordstroms carries them, but Neiman’s does. Or try the Lauder website.
Thanks much!
Anytime. 🙂
I recently tested the Water Lily one, forget what it is called, but it was citrus and green glass with fresh notes & laundry musk (sometimes i enjoy a good fresh laundry musk.)
If you like green & citrus scents, this could be one to try.
(I don’t, so it didn’t work for me 🙂 )
Hi everyone! My kitchen nightmare is almost over. The guys are here installing the backsplash as I type. I heard one glass tile hit the floor so far. I’ve got the vacuum waiting in the wings.
I have been on a bit of a lipstick quest and haven’t bought any full bottles of perfume since my birthday which was in early July. I’m hoping to use up some of my samples and decants. So for retail therapy I buy a lipstick or a nail polish because they are less expensive and less likely to cause guilt. I’m on a spending freeze for the most part but a lippie or polish here and there as needed is allowed.
Today I’m wearing Cuirelle which is a nice soft leather with these cooler morning temperatures. It’s faded though so I’ll need to find something else after lunch.
I’m the same with lipstick and nail polish. I’ve been actually using the same color for the last three months which is really amazing for me. But once the fall is here I’ll be back at the counters oogling all the great new colors.
Forget the computer’s autocorrect function. My brain does it to perfectly formed words. So I read that you are “the same with lipstick and floor polish,” dear floragal. And then I really got curious! I have some kooky ideas about polishing the floor with perfume or essential oil, following fragrant spills and the convenient location of the floor at the bottom of everything, ready for whatever gravity might pull in. So I wondered if you were polishing your floor with lipstick, and what kind of scent and texture and stain resistance resulted, and…. right, nail polish. But now I’m actually interested in what happens when you rub cosmetic products into wood, and if the opportunity presents itself I might run some preliminary experiments. I miss being a science teacher.
I’ve actually used cosmetics on wood! Eyeshadow – cream or powder with shimmer is pretty cool, and I’ve also used lotion that has a pearlescent sheen. I bought some sort of ridiculous highlighting face lotion years ago, and I looked like I was plugged into a socket. So I started messing around …
No way! Do you have pictures?
Having lived in the southwest for a while now, I can tell you that this thinking-at-the-speed-of-light is a very east coast thing (especially New Yorkers). Out here one is considered quite a freak for that kind (speed) of thinking. Which explains a lot about the southwest.
Having studied adobe construction (including earthen floors) and essential oils (separately), a combination does seem feasible. The oils’ scent would be fleeting, of course, but if you went with the resinous ones….(vetiver, patch)
Funny thing about that. Here in NYC, people sometimes think I’ve got a bit of my native California in me, since I’m so… slow. A shame about considering folks freaks just for thinking, but I’m sure there is something to be said for slowing down.
So you’ve studied adobe construction! That is a fascinating topic. Are there scents associated with those building methods?
Your idea makes sense, a nearly (or fully?) solid material that evaporates slowly would be ideal.
Maybe scent along with the pigment in a fresco….
Scents associated with earthen building? Pretty simple: soil, straw, water & sun. The floors are made using soil, straw and unboiled linseed oil, slow drying & smelly. But overall it’s a wonderful break from urban excess.
Thanks for the laugh!
I do that too- a few times a year when I want to indulge I’ll go hunting at the drug store and see if I can find a hidden gem color for some lip whatever, esp. if there’s a buy one, get one sale. Last year I discovered Revlon Mauvy Night which I really enjoy. Good luck! Definitely a cheaper splurge.
Hi poodle! I’m so glad that you’re at the end of your loooong kitchen reno! Good to see your here. 🙂
Good morning, everyone. For ages now, I also have bought lipsticks as a quick affordable lift to my spirits. A new lippy isn’t such a total boost as perfume, but it’s a bit of fun on a day when work is behaving badly. I’d never painted my nails in my life until about six weeks ago, but you’re right about nail polish too. Mind you, I’m not at all knacky with applying it, and my nails feel peculiar, as though they have tightened up and are trying to creep forward off my fingers, but it’s worth the strange sensation to gain the little spots of interesting or entrancing colour.
Psst, waterdragon! I can’t wear nail polish! I like the look of it, but when I put it on I feel like my fingers are little clubs, smothered and unwieldy.
I paint my nails once in a while – love reds! – but nail polish always makes my nails brittle.
I don’t know if this is any help, but my cure for almost everything except migraines and appendicitis is rosehip oil. If my skin or nails feel dry, I apply rho. If I get a bit oily, I use rho. I’m know it seems counter-intuitive to use the same product for opposite problems, but it honestly does seem to work for everything. Maybe it would work for your brittle nails.
Oh, thank goodness I’m not alone in this! When I mentioned this strange feeling to a couple of my team, both of whom sport expertly-applied & fascinating colour a lot, I caught this look between them that sort of said, “What’s the mad old bat on about now?” It really is an odd feeling, isn’t it?
It is! It’s feels like wearing a mask – like my fingers can’t breathe. I guess I could compare it to a sudden awareness of a body part that you usually ignore until discomfort alerts you to the fact that something isn’t quite right. I think I’m doing my part already by wearing appropriate undergarments.
Ha ha. Lose the undergarments and maybe your nails would compensate by being more tolerant. Not that I’d know or anything.
I can’t wear nail polish because I can FEEL it suffocating my nails. It’s like they can’t breathe and it drives me crazy 🙁 That hasn’t stopped me from purchasing it, though. As for appropriate undergarments, bras drive me crazy, too. My husband likens me to The Princess and the Pea 🙂
Lol. Once you get used to wearing it your nails feels really weird if you aren’t wearing it. I have a hard time having naked nails.
” Naked nails” — love it. We used to take the purrs to a vet whose favourite expletive was “Oh, naked FEET!”
I stick to nail polish on just my toenails. I figure precision is not required at that distance… nobody will notice my sloppy paint job 🙂
I used to do exactly that! I don’t have any idea what sudden quirk made me decide to approach my finger nails as well, especially as some of the colours I’ve bought can best be described as “elegant corpse”– a green, a sort of cement shade, a rotting-wood brown. Others are more cheerful, though, and I get a buzz out of associating the colour in my outfits to my nails. Sigh– I am a very deeply shallow person sometimes!
Someone should release a color line called Elegant Corpse. Too funny. I have a lot of shades that would qualify.
Just sitting and enjoying my coffee this morning and Fresh honey facemask. This stuff smells so good I want to eat it. Not sure what scent I’ll wear today but with my hubby at an art class all day I can go crazy!
Happy Saturday everyone!
I’m relaxing at lunch between chores. Since I had to do some more gardening today, I chose the most perfect “green” – Chanel No 19 edt. I can still smell good even if I’m just weeding. I’m indulging in my vintage bottle, even though I like the current too. The end of summer makes me yearn for those golden green chypres!
Robin – safe drive home!
Seems weird to be saying end of summer already. I feel like summer has barely started.
SOTD– Ormond Jayne Ta’if. So glad I have some of this
You smell great!
I love OJ’s Ta’if!
I wrested the old Vibe away from adorable hubbie, and am getting the oil changed, the fluids checked, and letting then take a swipe at the floors. Drinking awful coffee while I wait, but they are speedy. I am commando this morning. After chores and a shower I will test some Memo samples that are calling my name…
I went for an oil change at place that had a popcorn machine (yup) and had burnt a batch severely. They chose, in that tiny space, to cover it over with a lemon deodorizer, obviously ignoring dilution instructions. Won’t be going back there.
Happy weekend, everyone!
Thanks to everyone who sent well wishes for my sick cat yesterday – I really appreciate it. I’m thankful to this entire lovely community for being so kind, you all brighten my days.
The weather here in DC has been very weird – cooler than normal and the sound of cicadas and crickets in the evenings always makes me feel a bit melancholy as I associate them with the end of summer. So today I decided to sample Dior’s Feve Delicieuse seeking comfort and missing some of my cooler weather scents. At least that was what I was aiming for. 😉 I was a bit alarmed at the opening – huge! boozy! but it’s calmed down now after several hours. I think my 2mls will last me for a year.
Is he all better?
Thanks, perthgirl! I’m still waiting for his labs to come back, but he seems much better today. 🙂
Love cicadas and crickets in the evening. Summersummersummersummer.
Scritch the kitty’s ears for me please.
Aw, thanks, mals!
Oh, Holly, I missed this yesterday – I wish all the best to you both. I sampled Feve Delicieuse in Paris and found it quite lovely, even if I’m not generally the biggest gourmand lover. So I hope it offers at least some comfort.
Thanks, Annikky! I hope you’re enjoying your vacation and are getting plenty of time to relax.
Feve Delicieuse is lovely, but I feel like I should be wearing a severe pinstriped suit, stilettos and an Anna Wintour attitude to match. Not exactly cozy. 😉
Holly, thank you for this insight. I’m now planning to sample-query-buy FD when I’m in Sydney in a few weeks. I’m not utterly opposed to an occasional pin-striped perfume: sometimes I need one! I have to be decisive and quick in the presence of certain perfumes, ‘cos the chances are very spare that we will see them for sale in A-NZ.
Yes, I know just what you mean! I find the gourmands difficult, as they can skew towards girly cupcake or mens’ club. Feve is definitely the latter to me. Do you visit Australian Perfume Junkies at all?
I do. I love Portia’s exuberance! I learned about the Dior store on APJ, and now am determined to visit for the sake of FD.
Good luck with your kitty!
Commando again, easier when dealing with moving (dust, etc.). For anyone interested, my Olfactif samples yesterday included a notice that they are starting a men’s scent sample service. Think I may switch to that, being appreciative of florals as I am.
I was cycling this morning and saw a garage sale, I saw that they had an old typewriter that I was searching for a long time, the lady was so sweet, she said I could offer any amount I want since it was something she wanted to get rid of, I bought that for a reasonable price and at the last minute I’ve asked if she had old perfumes, she said no at first and then she remembered she had some, she went inside and brought out a vintage Chanel No. 5 edt that smells unbelievably nice and some old Anais Anais. It was really a lucky garage sale day for me.
Old No 5 is the best ever.
Yes!
Score on the vintage No 5!!!
I needed something lush and beautiful today so Flowerhead was my choice.
Went to community meeting last night to hear updates from the groups fighting the nearby wildfire, a really terrific gathering of individuals who made sure we were really informed about all that is happening to try and contain fire.
Praying for rain and cooler temps to help them 🙂
I wish all of you the best of luck, flannery, and sending prayers for your community.
You’re in our thoughts, with special gratitude to those terrific individuals.
I’m still idling in bed this cold Sunday morning, so I have no SOTD yet, but I know it will be Cristalle again, the better to focus on a close critical reading of my student’s thesis. I’m longing for a cup of tea, so it behoves me to bestir my lazy self and get going, especially since my cat Dakkie, who has a dim but retentive brain, has just appeared trailing one of his knitted mice and demanding a little something for his inner cat. He won’t give up until his one idea is satisfied, so I will get up and feed him. My day begins–enjoy yours, everyone.
Furry alarm clocks are better than the mechanical kinds because they cannot be turned off and mostly they don’t give upu til you are out of bed and doing what they want.
True dat!
My fuzzy alarm clocks are too patient with me. I try to tell them, “you have one job! Wake me up with your feline ways!” They just look at me like, “whatever. We know you are lazy.”
But they are super cute, and totally ridiculous, so we keep them.
Dakkie isn’t clever, but he is very definitely persistent. And loud. He has that Siamese whingeing wail thing going on, but because he’s a gentle thing, he also finishes each complaint with an interrogative trill. Between the volume and the sweetness, he got me out bed quite quickly.
Lol! Volume and sweetness. Dakkie has it figured out alright.
That’s really adorable.
Hi Waterdragon
Good luck with the thesis . I have a question. I’m going to Auckland this month and was wondering if you know where the perfume / beauty version of WORLD has gone? It used to be near Unity books last time I looked. Any other good spots. I guess there is Smith and Caughey. I have a long list of scents to try…Arquiste, Byredo, would love to find Chanel Rue de Cambon ….etc. any tips much appreciated. And sorry…but I’ve assumed you’re an Auckland gal, given the university references! I’m coming up to see a jewellery show at the art gallery and to do ‘research’ for a novel. Hee hee.
Hi there. Hey, it would be fun if we could catch up, perfumista style, for a cup of coffee! My office is about a two minute walk from the gallery, and the cafe there is my current bolt hole if I need to sit quietly and think undisturbed. If the ANZAC memorial photos are still in exhibition, try to find time to see them. They speak of a very different configuration of life in A-NZ. I found them deeply evocative and moving. M
WORLD has about four locations, I think, and (slightly annoyingly) they each carry different perfume stock. The perfume that I want always seems to be other than where I am! Anyway, there’s one shop in Tyler St at Britomart, and one in Ponsonby, but I’m not sure where. There’s also a shop at Newmarket, but again, I’m not sure where.
S&C has the usual brands, but wonderful staff. I know that in the next few weeks they’re getting the new VC&A Ambre Imperiale (?name probably not quite right), the new Alaia (pretty — full of violets without being at all purple, a little disappointing, but still quite acceptable) and the Prada Infusions. I’m afraid you can’t buy the Chanel Exclusifs any closer than Oz, which is one reason I spend my birthday in Melbourne or Sydney each year. Actually, I’m going to Sydney in September, then on to Sth Australia. I could always pick some 31 RC up for you & post it on. Let me know.
I’m still in bed…it’s snowing outside. Thanks so much for going to so much trouble with the perfume tips. I looked up World and will try and go to one or two but my time is a bit compromised as I have to fit in with other people’s plans. Would love to meet but maybe not this trip but when I am up there alone with more freedom. I am hoping to go to Melbourne next March …Hermes, Chanel etc. I always laugh going into those places and take perverse pleasure in being extra frumpy/scruffy while testing scents…love to lower the tone! Not that they care…but, you know. I will definitely try VC&A. Not keen on violets so much but like the Alaia bottle. Hope to see you next time! Thanks again…what a star!
I’ll look forward to a time when you have time!
When I bought my Bois des Iles, the sales assistant, who was got up regardless in the full kit of Higher Beauty Culture, handed my my beautiful little Chanel bag, complete with white paper camellia, then asked me if I would care to have my make-up, ummm, freshened. I detected a degree of anxiety, as though she really didn’t want my scruffy holiday self walking round with an obvious purchase from Chanel. It did make me giggle inside, but I managed to retain an external gravity and said yes…why not? I must admit I felt nicely done for the rest of the day.
I love that tension between external gravity and silly bugger at high end perfume counters. Inevitably you discover that the shop assistant is as nuts as you re. perfume, lipstick, stationery, fountain pens…and the sense of collusion is fantastic. Thanks again!
Fountain pens! Yes!!!!! I still use one, and own two really nice Watermans (Watermen?).
Happy Weekend to all! More rain and so wishing I could divert it to where it’s needed, like right around Flannery’s area!
SOTD is Dries van Noten from a sample. Love at first sniff! I am confounded because I’m not sure how Malle managed to create such a welcoming and simultaneously austere scent. I’ve never experienced this effect with any other perfume I have tried. It smells kind of like what people with exceptional facial bone structure look, if that makes any sense. Structurally perfect is the closet I can come to articulating the sensation I get from this one.
I could use some practice with sentence structure! 😉
I like that description very much. I don’t know the scent, but I like the writing.
You should definitely put this on your “to sniff” list!
Yes, it’s warm without being snuggly. I’m not sure I find it austere, but it has a certain masculine elegance. Like a male model with a warm smile and dimples. I think it does represent the Dries fashion aesthetic well.
I am not into fashion at all, mores the pity. My usual uniform of yoga pants and t-shirt could stand some improvement! I did do a little research on Dries and agree with you completely- the perfume seems to be an excellent reflection of the man and his work.
I do like this one… it’s on my ‘To Buy’ (someday) list….
Pixel, I have my beady on the 10ml travel size! More “do-able” from a financial standpoint. The lasting power of this one is spectacular too, which is another thing I take into consideration prior to coughing up a lot of change 😉
That 10ml is calling my name, too. Wonder if we could find a 3rd person to split the 3×10’s….
My hand is raised, price dependent?
I wore this sample yesterday and love it. Seriously contemplating the 10 ml, too.
Fantastic!
Hello Everybody–hope you are enjoying your weekend. I am sans perfume at the moment, but excited to spay some Portrait of a Lady later as I just acquired it this week. I still feel like I have more scent than I know what to do with, and samples that are begging to be tried. No more purchases until I dance with everyone on my dance card!!!
PoaL is very beautiful. It’s my favorite FM’s perfume.
I started out today in Angel Innocent. Then I went to Ulta and way oversprayed YSL Opium. It is warm here but looks like fall already. I am not sure if this would be of interest, but Macys website now has Bvlgari Black.
I’m back home in Estonia for three weeks (holiday, at last!) and wearing Ormonde Jayne Woman, a nice one for a moderately warm day spent in the garden. Estonian summers are actually good for perfume wearers: it is usually not so hot that you’re forced to stick with citrus scents and colognes and light florals. But it’s warm enough for perfumes to bloom very nicely. Although, personally, I would be ready to sacrifice some of my perfume range for a little more warmth…
Enjoy your holiday! You’ve earned it!
My SOTD is my beloved Paris YSL. Fits any weather, any mood, and is just plain wonderful.
It really is a beautiful scent.
Gosh, Paris really is just so pretty.
I love Paris. It’s one of those perfumes I’ve always wanted but never gotten around to buying a bottle.
Well I compensated for your lack of buying Paris then. I think I have some 6 bottles. ( old style Paris)
Working (from home) today, so it’s a sample testing day. Working my way thru several JCE compositions. Well he certainly makes it easy to get a bunch of testing done in a short amount of time, considering the scents don’t stick around long….
????
I spritzed some Un Jardin apres La Mousson the other day and the citrus woody drydown lasted all freakin day! I was impressed that a citrus could stay in the base AND last that long. It was my least favorite part if the scent, though. Which did you sample?
Un Jardin sur le Nil; Kelly Caleche (ok that one stuck around a little while). Then I tried some from The Different Company (some his, some his daughter’s, same disappearing effect); Divine Bergamot, Sublime Balkiss, and de Bachmakov.
And today I’m testing Hendley Perfumes. If you like smoky woody boozy, WOW his Bourbon is terrific! This goes on my winter list, for sure, along side of CBIHP 2nd Cumming.
It has been a long day so I am wearing Lemonilla perfume by CJ Scents. This is a nice one for gourmand lovers. It reminds me of lemon chiffon. It’s not sickly sweet and is a great undemanding comfort scent.
That sounds good!
Vintage mini of Jolie Madame. It’s overcast and cool, and time for me to make friends with smoky violet. I wish I could try the parfum, but we all need to wear our darlings.
Love JM. I just bought a 100ml tester for the cost of 2 artisans slices of pizza. It’s the EDT current version which smells almost the same as the vintage EDT that I sampled. Haven’t tried any other concentration. Leathery violets. Mmmmm.
I only have the vintage parfum, having found the vintage EdT too butch for me (no, seriously. don’t laugh). But I now have four minis because they are SO GORGEOUS and strange and addictive. There’s a beautiful white floral note in the extrait – it’s like that odd 90s fashion for floaty spaghetti-strap cotton sundresses in ditsy floral prints along with your Doc Martens.
Nice visual! I’ll have to hunt down some of that parfum. My Doc Martens are long gone though. But the EDT definitely requires some black leather boots.
<3 <3 <3 !
SOTM was Silences. I believe it’s the newer formulation, and out of curiosity I tracked down some of the older (original?) version, which hasn’t arrived yet. Have any of you tried both, and is there a noticeable difference in your experience?
Sheri G, as far as I know what you’ll find online is the original if that’s what you’re seeking. Weirdly enough, the flanker “Silences Sublime” doesn’t show up very often.
Silences has been noted as being discontinued this year. It is a true love of mine, and it’s still incredibly cheap on Fragrance.net and ebay.
I have a mini of Silences “parfum de toilette” which I know makes it older… is that the same as current?
pixel, all I see anywhere is the original. There actually is nothing more current that is available. Silences Sublime and Silences Purple exist, but when
people are seeking Silences, what they’re seeking online is the original. I know it’s weird, but that version of Silences is exactly what you will find at the discounters.
waving at fellow Silences fan. 😉
It is not the same as current – well, just-discontinued. The most recent (not the Eau de Parfum Sublime, which I found at New London Pharmacy online) is EdP, and the PdT is indeed older, probably 80s.
I have two big bottles of the PdT which I bought via eBay, and they seem to have survived age very well. The PdT is incredibly rich, with a beautiful rose note playing under all that moss, iris and galbanum. I’ve smelled the EdP briefly and it’s still good, but less intense, a bit drier and less floral.
Oh, thanks, mals! I did not know that the EdP is newer and the PdT is the older version. I have both, and the parfum. Any idea when the parfum came out?
Guessing the parfum, which I’ve never smelled, would have been late 70s/80s, but of course I have no idea when they stopped producing it.
Whoops, replied to Pixel.
What you can get at the discounters is still worth smelling if you love galbanum. Very nice. As I say, I prefer the PdT, but I like a heavy floral influence with my galbanum 😉 and the EdP is very good too.
However, don’t confuse it with their most recent release, Silences Eau de Parfum Sublime (seems like Jacomo intended to confuse, doesn’t it? and the SOBs went ahead and DC’ed Silences anyway, even though the Sublime can hardly be found in the US). Silences Sublime is nice, but it’s more work-friendly, quieter, has a LOT less galbanum and basically works like an eau or light, summer version of Chanel No. 19. If it sounds like I hate Sublime, I don’t. It was what I hoped No. 19 Poudre would be. Its lasting power on me is terrible, though: two hours, three if I spray until wet.
So happy to see this rundown of the differences in the various versions of Silences. I bought a big bottle of the EdP a few years ago, and have been curious about the older PdT — never smelled it before, but wondered if I should seek it out. Sounds like I should! I was never able to get my hands on the Sublime, either, but now I don’t feel so bad about it given that the lasting power is poor.
I do have scent eating skin, and lasting power is usually low no matter what (except vintage stuff. except, usually, tuberose and vanilla).
Oh this is giving me that itchy twitchy I-better-stock-up-before-it’s-gone-for-good feeling. I have a mini of the EDP and a larger spray of the EDT but it’s impossible know how much is actually left in the bottles!! I am going to do some deep breathing now and remind myself I have enough perfume to last my lifetime anyway….
hahahaha! right there with you on the itch 🙂
If you rotate the bottle and hold it up to a bright light, you can see the fluid level(with some difficulty). The bottle is actually transparent purple, but very dark. One of my pet peeves is opaque bottles. Grrr
You know, I’ve been able to estimate the level still remaining in my L’Arte di Gucci bottles with that technique… but can’t see through the Silences bottles. Maybe I need stronger light. 🙂
Wow, thanks everyone. I didn’t know there was an EDP version – both of the versions I’ve ordered are the parfum de toilette, but one came in a black box with “Silences” printed on it several times (that’s the only one I’ve tried so far), and the other is a greyish box with “Silences” appearing only once (that’s the one that’s coming soon). Could be they’re exactly the same except for the packaging, but Victoria over at BdJ sort of implies that they might be different, so I was curious. Guess I’ll find out for sure soon enough!
Check out Perfume Shrine for details on the packaging (http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2009/01/silences-by-jacomo-fragrance-review.html ). I bought both of mine via ebay, as I said, and haven’t ordered from a discount site.
Ahhh, so there was a reformulation at some point. Now I’m REALLY looking forward to an arm-to-arm comparison. Thanks, Mals!
I’m neglecting all of them, really, since I have too many to wear often and also like to try new samples. But perhaps my vetivers are relatively overlooked, partly because I never wear vetiver in late in the evening – too stimulating when I should be winding down.
Today I tested Bruno Fazzolari Montserrat, a light-hearted, fruit-centered perfume. I couldn’t tell if it was mango, or citrus and peach, or what, but it seems genuine rather than artificial. According to the notes on his website, Montserrat is “a burst of green leafy notes, pink grapefruit and osmanthus flower.” This is really clever, because osmanthus is both apricot-like and floral. To me, it is smoother and softer than green leafy notes and grapefruit would usually suggest. It makes me think of one of those fun summer LE Escadas done with subtlety and high quality ingredients.
I’m very impressed with this line! This makes three so far that I really like.
I have a sample of Montserrat, I need to try it again.
SOTE was SL Borneo 1834 layered with Nasomatto Hindu Grass(more patchouli). Like them separately, love them together.
Went commando for most of the day. Freshly showered, I generously spritzed Cuir de Lancome and now I’m sitting on the sofa in a perfumed cloud, in awe of how beautiful this stuff smells. I love how it evolves on skin, perfectly round and soft, with no jagged angles begging to be trimmed….it’s become my latest fragrance obsession – so much so that I’ve been acquiring back-up bottles. Yes, multiple. I don’t ever want to be without it.
I’ve got two bottles… well, now a bottle and a half ;)! and every time I wear it I think, Why don’t I wear this more often?? So versatile, so easy. Shame it was d/c.
I’m wearing Bandit for the first time and I’m in love! Thanks to all the NSTers who have recommended this. I plan on wearing this sample out soon, so hoping a FB is in my price range (cheap). Wish me luck!
I think I’ve seen it from time to time on discounters’ sites. Worth checking now and then. Good luck!
Just got through my shower because I couldn’t stand wearing Cuir de Russie in parfum form anymore. Last night was my first foray in decanting something. Wasn’t as scarey as I thought it would be but putting parfum in a spray decant was a bad idea. Bad idea because I’m used to two sprays and that doesn’t work with parfum unless you want to clear the room. Right now I am commando and going to put on either Jicky or Chanel no 19.
Got a question, who has ordered something off of E-bay and had to sign for a vintage bottle of perfume? I don’t recall ever signing for perfume unless it came from Canada or something like that. This was from an American seller. Too bad that I was out and about.
I’m not sure, since my condo front desk usually signs for deliveries, but I have used the USPS Signature Confirmation Service myself when I send in tax returns. According to the website, it can be used for proof of delivery of First–Class Mail parcels, Priority Mail items, and Package Services parcels (Parcel Post, Media Mail, Library Mail, or Bound Printed Matter).
IIRC, USPS has a policy that it’s up to the discretion of the letter carrier to decide if it’s safe to leave a package unattended, even if the sender didn’t require a signature. Year ago I lived in a building where our letter carrier didn’t want to leave any packages at all if there wasn’t someone there to accept them…
Morning, everyone. Monday already for me, no perfume at all today because I’m about to have a small operation in my mouth. I’m really thirsty, but of course it’s Nil by Mouth for the next several hours, bother it. I cannot find words for how much I want a really hot cup of tea right now! I’m absurdly nervous about this. In my long-ish life I’ve had quite a few operations and I’ve pretty much just faced them stoically. This time, though, for a few days, I WON’T BE ABLE TO TALK! !!!! Or eat, either, but just watch me work out an ingenious way to sup my cups of tea…they don’t call us the nation of Number 8 Wire for nothing!
I hope it goes very smoothly for you. Can’t talk but can type?
Well, I hope so. I’d probably go completely potty –as opposed to only partially– if the words had no outlet at all!
I hope that things go smoothly for you. Do you have a decadent treat in mind for when you are able to eat again?
Time for the old chalkboard around the neck, huh?
🙂 Hope it goes well.
Yes, hope everything goes smoothly, including the tea. (Though if you dribble we won’t tell 🙂 And if you couldn’t type we’d really miss you.
Hope it goes (or went) well! I’ve always been naughty about following directives with procedures but I won’t encourage my bad behavior. Keep us posted!
I hope all goes well and that you figure out a way to get your tea.
Howdy NSTers~!
Just back home for 24 hours after a week in Yosemite and then we’re heading out on a camping trip. Loving being w the family.
Weird encounter with the woman who rented us her house… as a parting gift she gave me a bottle of Chelated Zinc. I asked her what it was for and she told me to look it up. I still am not clear why anyone would want to take this as a supplement… the risks include anosmia! I chucked out the bottle with a flourish.
Sorry, not very perfume related today. And actually my real reason for chiming in is to find out if anyone has heard from MikasMinion since her cat went missing? I tried to do a quickie search… and couldn’t find any entries from her in the last couple of days. I really hope her kitty shows up soon.
SOTD? Actually, it has been my main scent for the past week: Eau D’Orange Verte
That is a really bizarre “gift”. It’s good for colds and sore throats. I’ve taken it and it does help(no anosmia). But, umm, WHY? And so secretive. There may be a good reason why she lives out in the woods…
