Wednesday scent of the day 8/20

Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile collector bottle, 2013

Do tell us your fragrance of the day!

I'm wearing Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile Eau de Toilette. It's sadly been discontinued in favor of the very different Eau de Parfum. I think I'm nearly the only person who liked the Eau de Toilette better.

Reminder: this Friday, August 22, wear something beachy, or anything you think of as "a vacation in a bottle". The following Friday, the 29th, wear the last fragrance you bought.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning! Jardins d’Ecrivains Wilde for me.

  2. Jonas says:

Good morning everyone. SOTD is Timbuktu + Rose Anonyme.

Yesterday I tried Timbuktu and it reminded me pretty strongly of Atelier Cologne’s Rose Anonyme which I tried last month. I didn’t care much for RA at the time. I thought it smelled like syrupy play dough. Timbuktu, however, I loved. I decided to wear both fragrances today with one on each wrist. Normally when I do these side by side tests I find that the two fragrances that I thought would smell nearly identical could not be more different.

Well, in this case I can definitely see how Timbuktu made me think of RA. They both have the same smoky sweetness (benzoin + incense?). However, as usual, the differences turned out to be much more substantial. Yesterday, It almost felt like RA was a closet flanker to Timbuktu (Timbuktu Extreme de Rose perhaps? How about Timbukt’Oud?) but side by side they are clearly very different things. Personally, I find Timbuktu much more wearable. In fact, I don’t think I see myself wearing RA again. Even so, wearing RA next to Timbuktu has somehow raised my opinion of it. If nothing more, I no longer think it smells like syrupy pay dough. As for Timbuktu, I love it and I definitely see a full bottle in my future.

    • Robin says:

Interesting. I didn’t love RA either, maybe I’ll give it another shot.

  3. relleric says:

    SOTD is Sexual Pour Homme.

    • Robin says:

Never smelled that one. The women’s used to have a bit of a following at MakeupAlley.

Mito EDP which is one of the samples I acquired when I was at Scent Bar this weekend. My budget cowers at the thought that I might become a Vero Kern fangirl. I bought Rozy EDP and want the Rozy voile d’ extrait. I also sampled the Onda voile when I was in the store and might need that too. I see a sample order coming on….

    • Deva says:

I am so tempted to try this line but I am so afraid at the same time!

    • jirish says:

I love Rozy in both iterations, and yeah, my wallet is cowering.

    • CM says:

I love Mito and Onda in all it’s formulations… can’t wait to try Rozy! I was hovering over the Try a Sample button on Luckyscent just last night!

  5. perthgirl says:

I didn’t realise the edt had been discontinued..

Today I’m wearing Amouage Memoir woman. I have to be in the mood for it but the drydown is one the best imo. Strange though- I sprayed from my bottle this morning and this evening topped up with a decant sent to me. It’s the first time I’ve used the decant and it seems to not have that initial herbal/spicy weird part- it’s much smoother. I wonder why the difference?

On another note: Robin I had a dream about your poll question the other day! Lol.
We had a poll telling how we all got here, in perfume-blog-land. Was it long lost perfume we were googling? (if so, what?) Or trying to find out more about a new perfume love etc? I’d love to know how we all ended up here!

    • Robin says:

Yep, gone. They do still make the Iris Nobile Sublime or whatever it was.

A decant is likely to have at least some degradation of the top notes, even if it’s only minor, just by virtue of having been sprayed out of the original bottle.

and that’s so funny! We did a poll like that once, but might have been a long time ago, I’ll check.

    • mals86 says:

Memoir, I do really love it. It was sort of a stealth love, too – I was trying to figure it out and kept wearing it until I started craving it. (Too hot/humid for it here in the summer, though. It would likely kill me.)

      • perthgirl says:

Death by Memoir is a very real possibility. Wrong weather, bit of a headache… many ways to die…
I like her best on chilly spring nights for some reason

    • CM says:

Memoir is great! I had a traveler friend mule it back via Dubai duty free. Some great deals there! Like Mals, it’s way too hot and humid for me to wear Memoir at the moment, but maybe later this evening I’ll add a tiny spritz for bedtime.

      • Omega says:

        Another Mem fan here..good stuff.

    • solanace says:

      That´s an AMAZING idea!

  6. stinker_kit says:

I am wearing EL Azuree today. Perfect for a summer day. I put a dollop of CereVe moisturizing cream in my hand and 2 squirts of Azuree, mix, and diffuse over entire body.

    • Deva says:

Great idea! I am going to try this perfume/moistuizer combo- I bet it really helps more fleeting scents last longer. :-)

      • stinker_kit says:

It can help more fleeting fragrances, but I was attempting to calm the uber strength of the Azuree., I hope successfully……

  7. cologneluvr says:

SOTD: Fahrenheit Absolute Dior for men

    • stinker_kit says:

How is the absolute? I have a tiny vintage bottle of the regular strength that I think is by turns, strange and enchanting.

      • Omega says:

I hear it’s more feminine than the original.

  8. Deva says:

Bulgari (or bvulgai, if you want to be all kinds of fancy!) Black- love this stuff and it’s lovely in the heat and humidity of Florida- it’s like a brief flash of a olfactory polar vortex!

    • stinker_kit says:

Bvlgari Black is wonderful! I have gone through an entire bottle and have started on another!

      • jackieonasty says:

God, I love this stuff SO much. It’s so weird and great. And it’s kind of a power scent. Whenever I wear it I feel like daring the world to fvck with me.

  9. sweetgrass says:

I saw something on Facebook this morning about today being Coco Chanel’s birthday, so I decided to wear Coco today.

  10. floragal says:

I’m wearing Cuir de Lancome today.

    • CM says:

Are you sighing because you smell so good?

    • sweetgrass says:

You do smell pretty fabulous. Which reminds me.. I haven’t worn my CdL in a while..

  11. mals86 says:

Rained this morning (again), and now it’s muggy, so wearing my decant of Dior J’Adore L’Absolu, which doesn’t have that steely cast that the current version of j’Adore seems to have now. Pretty flowers.

Still trying to use up decants. I estimate I’ll have that done in about, oh, 2023. Around the time my youngest should finish college… assuming I don’t buy any more. Eep.

    • odonata9 says:

There’s always evaporation to account for ; ) I was just digging through samples and decants and found a few empty sample vials.

  12. rose pepper says:

SOTD is Floris Jasmine. I am trying to go through my jasmine samples, now that I have found the best jasmine perfumes (for me, they are SL a la Nuit, SL Sarrasins, and Creed Jasmal). No point in hoarding them, but I like most of them enough to wear.

Once this wears off, I will apply a la nuit. I bought a FB of a la Nuit, and have plans to buy a FB of Sarrasins and Jamsal someday. But, Jasmal is discontinued, which makes me sad :(

  13. teri says:

I’m only wearing Lubriderm body lotion today as I’m off on my hiking trip at noon today. But I can tell you all smell mahhhhvelous.

Have a well-scented remainder of the week and I’ll think of all of you in your beachy best on Friday.

    • nebbe says:

You’ll probably miss this note, but hope you have a fun and safe adventure this weekend!

  14. CM says:

Day 3 of Amouage week brings me to Beloved. I really need to stop hoarding my decant and use the dang thing up…ala Mals! It’ll go on FBW list and eventually I’ll get a bottle I suppose.

How do y’all prioritize your lists? I usually end up spending when I see a discount bottle or a discontinued notice or have a discount code of some sort… even if said bottle isn’t high on the list. Sigh. I should sort and rank the bottles I want and then buy them it that order.

I’ve gotten better at not impulse purchasing discount bottles lately, but far from perfect!

    • thegoddessrena says:

How much do I think about a scent? How fast does it go on my to-buy list after I try it? Can I afford it? Is it so amazing that I’ll save for it? No real priority order since I have dozens on the list, some of which have hung out there for years and I can be easily distracted by something new and amazing

    • floragal says:

I’m buying less FBs because I enjoy wearing a different scent each day and I like many scents. A decant – even smaller 10-15mls – lasts a long time for me. Plus, there are always new scents to try and those samples need to be used up.

If I see a FB of a scent I REALLY love on sale I might purchase.

Discontinued scents are an issue, but I find many you can still purchase and they’re just fine.

      • thegoddessrena says:

It is possible to use up one’s samples? I have hundreds–I could go at least a year and not repeat, not to mention that I keep acquiring more plus there’s all those full bottles to use….

  15. Desirae says:

It’s cold and rainy here, so I’m wearing Paco Rabanne’s La Nuit. Luca Turin apparently described it as ‘Tabu sprayed on a horse”, but to me it smells of wax, roses, civet and honey. Something about the wax-smutty honey combo says sex in church to me. Very ‘like a prayer’. I wear only a tiny dab, it’s very strong.

    • sweetgrass says:

I’ve been wanting to try that one but haven’t gotten my mitts on any yet. You know you’re a ‘fume fiend when someone describes a perfume as “Tabu sprayed on a horse”, and that makes you think “ooh I want to smell that”.

    • foxbins says:

I had such low expectations for a Paco Rabanne scent but La Nuit is lovely. You smell great! I should wear mine tomorrow.

  16. austenfan says:

Trying to gather my thoughts about which beachy scent I will wear I put on some PdN Number One today. It is very nice though not my favourite from this line.
I’ve never tried the EDT of Iris Nobile. I’m very pleased with the EDP that I’ve got.

  17. MikasMinion says:

Lyric Woman again. I am almost out and need a larger decant.

  18. jackieonasty says:

Good afternoon! That sounds lovely :) I’m wearing Diptyque L’Ombre Dans L’Eau with Demeter Dirt and it is perfection. I think somebody here suggested that in the comments, so thanks.

I’m going to the beach Friday and am going to douse myself in either Kareem Abdul Egyptian Musk Oil (musk this light makes me think of the beach), Jennifer Aniston (I know, I know, but it’s beachy), Bobbi Brown Beach (obvious choice) or Child. Which do I pick?

    • nebbe says:

Tough choice. In the absence of any real direction, I at times opt for the “write options on slips of paper, toss in a hat, then choose one” method. Often, I end up pulling several slips out, because it will reveal my true feelings.

  19. Erin says:

You ARE the only one who likes that EdT better. ;) Seriously, though, I prefer the EdP, but they are very different scents. The EdP kind of reminds me of the more recent Cartier La Panthère, which I *didn’t* like particularly, not sure why, and I can see how the rather insistent “glow” of either of them could bother someone. Not as cheerful as the EdT…

    • austenfan says:

You are right there. I’m still undecided about La Panthère. It’s very well crafted but I’m somehow not entirely convinced by it. Still dithering about which version of Baiser Volé I like best.

  20. Anna Stromberg says:

I have Fuegia Biblioteca de Babel on the left (lovely, and very well done. But, if you have ELdO Like this, you don’t really “need” it, as the dry down is almost similar) and Jimmy Choo Exotic (mad fruit punch with a side note of glue over Gucci Rush) on the right.

    • PetronellaCJ says:

Thanks for the information on Biblioteca de Babel! I passed the shelf at NK just yesterday and was intrigued by the name alone. And I love Like This, have a small decant from one of our NST swaps. Must test!

SOTD is Hermes Eau de Narcisse Bleu. Again :). Fits perfectly with our slightly chilly end of summer.

  21. Elisa says:

Put on Passage d’Enfer this morning and it’s mostly gone. I may put on a bit of the Chaos sample in my bag later on.

  22. foxbins says:

House of Matriarch Epiphany today. Lavender, amber, oud, pepper. The drydown is really nice once the oud recedes a bit. I am really over the whole “oud in everything” trend. What’s next? Tide Oud?

  23. caffeinequeen says:

I was in a coconutty mood this morning, so I chose Lavanila Vanilla Coconut. It’s hitting the spot (and making me hungry for an Almond Joy)!

  24. odonata9 says:

Wearing Mugler Alien Eau Extraordinaire. Not a fan of the original, but sprayed it on a card in Sephora yesterda and it seemed very different. So I picked up a sample – it is quite different on paper than on skin. Much less citrusy and more floral on skin. It’s ok, nothing I need to buy.

  25. solanace says:

In the morning I wore Eau d´Orange Verte, but after lunch I had to reach for something more interesting, and I´m wearing Jolie Madame. Always great, even the reissue.

    • mals86 says:

      Love Jolie Madame.

    • Delacey says:

These are so different, but both are also favourites of mine.

  26. Mary Carol says:

Today I decided to put on AG Eau de Charlotte and it is so nice! I have to sniff my wrist once in a while to get a good whiff.

  27. SophieC says:

Today I started off with iris nobile sublime sample but was lucky to be near Selfridges later and try to the new Acqua di Parma Rosa Nobile. It Is rather lovely in a delicate way and reminds me of many old memories of the smell of country roses maybe mixed with a cream in my grandparents house. I will try it more and see how it goes but definitely different to a number of rose scents I thought – I often appreciate but don’t actually wear them.

  28. pyramus says:

Inspired by relleric’s yesterday wearing, I dug my Mugler B*Men out of its shoebox purgatory this morning and sprayed it on with some abandon. And it’s so so great! Spicy rhubarb, licorice, wood, sweet but not overly so. Its weirdness is perfectly calibrated. I can’t imagine why it was discontinued.

  29. Filomena says:

Today I am wearing Il Profvmo’s Aria di Mare. Therefore, that will not be my Friday beach scent. I have started today wearing beachy summery scents as summer will soon be over. It goes by so quickly.

  30. farouche says:

Robin, I also prefer the EDT. I own a bottle of it and only have a couple of samples of the EDP, though I like it very much as well. Should I ever finish the bottle (ha!), it would be a toss-up as to which I would repurchase.

    • farouche says:

That is, if I had a choice…since the EDT is discontinued!

      • Robin says:

It was really lovely with the anise & orange blossom! I like the EdP ok but was not tempted to buy it.

  31. hajusuuri says:

SOTD = Hermes L’Ambre des Merveilles

This is sunshine in a bottle. I have the 50 mL bottle which is so cute and just perfect to hold and spray. I find the 100 mL bottles too big for my hands to comfortably spray. I have not thought about what to wear on beachy Friday and this may just fit the bill!

  32. rebeccat94 says:

Today has been a very strange day.. I started out with Dior Addict, spitzed on Taylor by Taylor Swift, and ended the day with Shalimar. My perfumes simply didn’t want to stay on today.

  33. Laila says:

Another very warm and humid day here, but the sun came out, making it one of the last ‘swim’ days. Post pool, I showered and conditioned with various monoi products and finished with a couple of spritzes of YR’s Eau des Vahines, taking me to a tropical paradise instead of yesterday’s Amazonian jungle. Where will I be tomorrow? Hmmm . . . .

  34. I waited two years to get Bottega Veneta EDP. Finally wore my new bottle today – and it seemed to last about five minutes. Odd. I wonder if this is my first counterfeit. (Bought online at Amazon.)

  35. perfumelaydee says:

I am wearing Creed Sublime Vanille today! Lovely.
