The laziest Thursday poll EVER ~ SOTD

lazyboy

I’m having a terribly busy week, hence the laziest poll we ever posted on a Thursday: what’s your scent of the day?1

Coming up on Saturday, by the way, will be our yearly haiku challenge, in case anyone wants to start working on one (or more!) now. You can find the “rules” in the 2011 haiku poll, and you can also check out the 2010 version for more inspiration.

My scent of the day: I’m wearing L’Artisan’s (discontinued) Jacinthe des Bois. Tea is Upton’s Spring Dragon oolong. I have not yet started on the chocolate, but I’m sure I will.

1. I should note that we did once do this same poll on a Friday.

SOTD is Clive Christian 1872 for men. Yesterday it was Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin. Tomorrow, who knows for sure? :)

I never know what I’ll wear tomorrow!

Sometimes I’ll get an indication today (mentally, if that makes sense) about what I will wear tomorrow. Usually I’ll think of something that reminds me of a fragrance, and that is what I’ll apply if I can just remember that fleeting thought! :)

My SOTD is Isabey Fleur Nocturne. My last experience of composing a haiku in senior school bombed. But I do appreciate a good one. About the pic above, I guess Frasier finally manage to find a place to dump Martin’s chair!

It’s raining here but it’s relatively warm and it feels like everything is finally turning green so SOTD is Bandit. I was this close to choosing OJ Champaca and even though Bandit won today, I lined up Champaca for tomorrow.

I made a nice discovery this week. I’ve found a small niche perfume boutique in an Old Town district of my university city. Smelled Amouage, Montale and few other for the 1st time in my life. And also few samples are on their way.
Today’s scent is Marc Jacobs Rain, from this year’s Tropical Splash collection of 100ml EDT.

What a wonderful discovery for you. It’s fantastic you’ll have a shop like that to visit. It is such a joy to sniff in a good shop!! There’s no chance for that to ever happen where I live. Sometimes I have this dream that I stumble into a re-sale or antique shop that has a hidden closet of vintage fragrances…. it’s one of my favorite dreams!

      • lucasai
        Posted on 10 May 2012

Oh I know that dream too. But more often I take an imaginary sniffathlon trying to imagine the smell of perfume that sound pretty just by the way they’re being described. I’ll always have hope that one day I’ll smell what yet remains unsniffed.
They didn’t have a very wide range but at least they had something new, and nose likes new encounters.

I love smelling new things too. It’s gotten to the point where my favorite SA in Saks. Thought of me when the new Killians came in and she even made me samples before the carded ones came in. At Barney’s one of the SAs handed me a new book of tester strips since I’m there so often

            Posted on 10 May 2012

It’s good to have a trusted and friendly SA. Just yesterday my SA friend pulled out bottles of Marc Jacobs Rain, Kumquat and Hibiscus and made me samples, even though the fragrances weren’t displayed at the shop yet.

      • Milena
        Posted on 10 May 2012

Lucasai, I haven’t tried Casanova. A few years ago I ordered some HdP samples mostly to try Noir patchouli, but Casanova is not among them. The Noir Patchouli didn’t impress me and I forgot about this line until lately. I also like Moulin Rouge, but not as much as T3A.

Oh yay! I loved the haikus last year.
SOTD: Was testing Shalimar Initial. Now onto Bond New York Oud.
Shalimar is one of my desert island scents so I was very wary of the Initial but…it’s not bad. Makes me think of French patisseries. Shalimar is the woman in the corner, still wearing last night’s sexy dress and sipping her coffee with a satisfied air and the Initial is the bright young thing who has popped in for a treat after that morning’s Pilates session
and looks at Shalimar over in the corner through faintly envious eyes.

So far, New York Oud is still Mecurochrome band-aid but I’m only 15 mins in…

    • naomi77
      Posted on 10 May 2012

I kind of love New York Oud. But I rarely wear it because it’s so strong, and the medicinal smell is so distracting. I have a vial, wrapped in that bon-bon style wrapping that Bond does, sitting in my desk drawer at work. Every time I open the drawer I can smell it. So warning – be careful about spilling or getting on clothing.

      • FragrantWitch
        Posted on 10 May 2012

Thanks for the warning! I’ve just dabbed a bit for the first test and I’m so glad I did- this stuff is potent. I’m just wondering when something other than band-aid and now rubbing alcohol will make an appearance?

    • lucasai
      Posted on 10 May 2012

I like that Shalimar too! I need to find something to combine with it so that I could wear it without thinking “I’m wearing a perfume for women, what do I do now?”

SOTD is Vivla La Juicy, wanted something lighthearted, fruity and bright (hey!! It’s sunny!!). It is totally hitting the spot.

I have a couple perfume note recommendation questions for this especially lazy poll! Must-try coconut scents? My new man–if I can still call him that–*loves* coconut smells, as evidenced by his near swooning over surfboard wax. Any go-to tropical coconutty perfume recs so I can indulge him?

Also, I have a friend with a burgeoning interest in perfume whose birthday is coming up. She said she wanted to sample a bunch of lily scents so she could find the perfect one; I think I’ll send her a sample pack of lily scents.. Suggestions?

    • lucasai
      Posted on 10 May 2012

      Afternoon Meg!
May I suggest Honore Des Pres Love Coco. I personally don’t know that one as I’m not much into coconuts but it has a coconut milk note and natural coco essence.
There is (or was?) one from Armani, called Diamonds Black Carat it smelled of coconuts too.

    • AnnS
      Posted on 10 May 2012

Meg – I seem to recall, though it’s been a while since I tested it, that Parfums de Nicolai Juste en Reve has a delightul tropical flowers with sheer coconut watery type note in it. It is just tropical enough to be in that genre, but no way like suntan oil. Sheer and very pretty.

    • odonata9
      Posted on 10 May 2012

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, Pacific Indian Coconut Nectar, the original Harajuku Lovers ‘G’, Yves Rocher Coconut. HdP Love Coco was nice, but smelled too much like Thai food for me – if you want a non-sweet one, then try that or the new EldO, which I’ve also heard is more savory.

      Posted on 10 May 2012

Hi Meg – how about Parfumerie Generale or liaisons Dangereuses? How about Baiser Vole or Stella McCartney’s LILY for the lily?

    • Bradamante
      Posted on 10 May 2012

That is a coincidence! My scent of the day is Gold, by Donna Karan, a scent based upon lily. There is indeed a golden glow to it, and that’s why it reminds me of Le Parfum Sacre de Caron, which it has no resemblance to whatsoever. I think this might be an interesting one to try for your friend.

Emily, I can just image that No 19 and Christalle time-delay layer – wonderful. I have quite a few Chanel Les Exclusives samples (thank you thank you to a wonderful SA in Dubai!) – and they layer very well – ie one for the day, with another applied in the evening over the faded remains of the day scent. This works very well for Amougae Dia for day morphing into Amouage Gold in the evening too.

Robin, you can do SOTD poll any day! – I love how it brings the NST community alive in a symphony of smells – this poll enables us to sense each other in the e-ether. Mine is Narciso Rodriguez For Her, “layered” as I am also wearing the spray deo. I am on a 3 day work related planning retreat, so most unusually, I am also wearing the same fragrance 3 days in a row! I wish this scent had more oomph, but then again I chose it, because I knew I’d need a comfort scent – as this is an “overwork” retreat. Planning during the day – answering a deluge of e-mails at night. Enough moans – smelling pretty enough.

SOTD has been Penhaligon’s Eau Sans Pareil, which I think is very pretty, almost a chypre eau. It fades a little too fast for me, though.

SOTEvening is going to be some vintage Chanel No. 19 edt, for Gaze’s middle school band concert… I’ll see if I can talk him into wearing some Midnight in Paris (discreetly, I promise).

It is wonderful. I have a thing for incense. I may have to get a FB of it because it has some staying power on me too.

My SOTD: Boyfriend from the mini oil rollerball. Purchased this for a whopping $10 at Sephora yesterday when I discovered I’d traveled on an overnight trip and (horror of horrors) forgot to bring perfume with me!!! It’s not a bad scent. Reminding me a bit of YSL’s Nu?

Really? I’ve seen a lot of positive comments on Boyfriend but never a reference to Nu. Now my curiosity is definitely piqued!

        Posted on 10 May 2012

Can’t comment on the EDP cause I haven’t tried it…only the oil. But it’s definitely giving me that Nu vibe!

    • Posted on 10 May 2012

I got that oil rollerball, too – I kind of like it better than the edp – a little softer.

    SOTE: Bond New York Oud
I think I have finally forums a rose that works for me! Once I get past the Band-Aid stage , which, to be fair, is oddly compelling, the rose/saffron goodness kicks in with a shot of honey to help smooth it along. Lovely stuff!

I’m testing my first ever batch of samples! I tried Ormonde Jayne Fragipani Absolute first….It was ok. I was so disappointed because it didn’t smell anything like I thought it would and it really just reminded me of J’adore…only nicer. I didn’t like it. I wish I had. And it wore completely off in three hours. No more smell at all. BUT the second one is L’artisan L’Chasseaux Papillions and I love it! I can tell its not going to last as long as I like so a ” shout out” here…Has anyone tried L’artisan’s body creme or any other body products to see if the layering makes the scent last longer? This is gorgeous! : )))

This morning was cold and rainy here, so I put on Magical Moon by Hanae Mori to boost my spirits with its fruity/floral cheerfulness.

SOTD is a bit of a trio of scents. I wore Tauer’s wonderful Le Maroc pour elle yesterday, and as a lot of rain was announced for today I put on Goutal’s Eau du Ciel this morning. The Tauer is a bomb and some must have ended up in my hair. Anyway, I got occasional whiffs of it during the day, which made for quite a nice combination. By evening the Eau du Ciel had vanished and as I had a party to go to I put on some Un Matin d’Orage ( it was still raining). Miraculously this revived the Tauer as well so I had another Goutal-Tauer mix. Lovely again actually.

I’m wearing a trio too! Have a little Eau de beax for warmth on – but also felt like some ‘freshness’ so some christalle eau de Verte on one wrist and Allure Blanche on the other. I have the first two but am strongly considering the third (Blanche). Does anyone know if it IS a limited edition and any opinions on whether it is too masculine for a woman?

I have been moaning to Angela today about Diorissimo EDP being heavy on the tuberose. It’s my scent of the afternoon and I am trying hard to see past those big fat tuberoses strangling out the muguet.

  46. Posted on 10 May 2012

SOTD is DSH Tubereuse, which is smelling better than ever to me today, not sure if it’s because I haven’t worn it in a while or because it actually improved with age! I’m getting less green edge in the top notes and more woody sweetness. Yum yum tum. I will re-buy this one when my purse spray is gone.

    Posted on 10 May 2012

SOTD was DSH American Beauty. I just recently got a big sample order and am working my way through them. I have been on a rose kick lately, and AB is one of the nicest rose soliflores I have tried, and it even has decent staying power on my perfume-eating skin.

My SOTD was pretty, but long gone now, or I just can’t smell it anymore – VC&A Gardenia Petale. It’s finally warming up here, at least for now, so I can start wearing the light stuff again. Yay! I always think I have a predominantly winter scent wardrobe but I really do have a lot of spring and summer perfumes. Of course, living in the Bay Area I can wear pretty much whatever I want any time. I can pretend we have seasons, though.

We have our own seasons here. We should figure out what’s good to wear during fire season. Or fog season.

What will you wear when The Big One hits?

Here on the Gulf Coast, we have seasons. They are pre-summer, early summer, mid-summer, hotter- than-Hades summer, late summer, post-summer, and not-summer.

Taking a big brave chance and wearing Tuscan leather by Tom Ford ! I really love it but have to really push myself to wear it as its a commitment scent ! Out of all the fragrances I wear I get a lot of inquires about this one but little compliments on it ! I guess it’s intriguing but not the most rewarding pay off ! I actually like it better on my partner or someone else ,

I’m responding very late but that’s how my life has been…no time during working hours and then too busy in the evening (what little I have). But I am posting at this late hour regarding the combination of two fragrances I wore today–first sprayed SL’s Eau Froida, liberally, followed by a few small spritz’s of CdeG Avignon. Maybe it’s me, but I thought the combination was wonderful. If anyone tries the combo, let me know what you think. A good weekend to all!

Help! I applied Fracas from a sample (directly from RP) and I can barely smell anything. Can it be me, the sample, the weather(rainy)? Anyone else have this problem? My last, which was my first, sample, seemed fine and smelly. Years ago this was a scrubber, but now I really want a bottle – but not if it’s too weak or I can’t get any tuberose.
    Thanks for any help.
