Judith Leiber Topaz ~ new fragrance

Judith Leiber Topaz

Handbag & accessories designer Judith Leiber has launched Topaz, a new ‘modern floriental’ fragrance for women who ‘want to leave a signature’.

Topaz was developed by perfumer Hugh Spencer. The notes include cassis, kiwi, bergamot, jasmine, lily of the valley, violet leaves, rose, musk, guiac wood, patchouli, oud and vanilla.

Judith Leiber Topaz is available in 50 ($115) and 75 ($175) ml Eau de Parfum.

Hmmm. Modern floriental doesn’t really rev my engine.

Also, suprised by the sort of blah-Estee Lauder Private Collection bottle. I’d have expected a bit more from Judith Lieber.

It’s the same bottle she used for her last fragrance, Judith Leiber Night — just a different color.

So true! Must admit that when Night was released (considering the niche brand, and the patchouli-ambar vibe), was wondering how long would it take for a release with oud (and the same packaging, since is not the “signature” scent, and by that I refer to the first release): not much, it seems.

Ikat, that’s exactly what I thought — EL Private Collection! Which by the way still come in parfum concentration.

I can’t believe they used “floriental” in their release. I thought that term was more for use by (dismissive) critics and reviewers.

Gosh, I use the term floriental all the time — what’s dismissive about it? It just means floral + oriental.

Maybe “dismissive” is a bad word choice on my part. I see the word as a kind of generic descriptor — generic as in it describes a genre and is useful as a category, but also (often) as in, “it’s another floriental” — a vague designation for what are more and more often vague scents — doesn’t matter what flowers, doesn’t matter how spiced. Floriental.

“For a woman who wants to leave her signature,” makes it sound like it’s betting on being memorable. “Modern floriental” alternately seems very prosaic.

Oh. I kind of see. To me though, it’s just another fragrance family — any of the fragrance families can be done in a generic way, and there are so many scents coming out now that there’s too much of everything, florientals no more than anything else.

I read “a woman who wants to leave a signature” as meaning it would be strong!

Yes, you can’t help but notice the similarity to the EL PC bottles, but I still think this one is pretty. My penchant for shiny things – you know, the inner crow thing.

I remembered a previous “Topaz” fragrance. So I looked it up. It was “Topaze” by Avon (1959). I guess there’s nothing new under the sun, just like with the shapes of perfume bottles.
