Chanel No. 19 Poudre ~ new fragrance

Chanel No. 19 Poudré perfume

Chanel will launch No. 19 Poudré, a flanker to 1971′s Chanel No. 19. The new fragrance honors the iris pallida note, and reportedly reveals a new powdery-musky facet.

No. 19 Poudré is a green floral, and was developed by Chanel house perfumer Jacques Polge. The notes include neroli, galbanum, jasmine, iris, white musk, vetiver and tonka bean.

Chanel No. 19 Poudré will be available in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette. (via prime-beaute)

Update: see a review of No. 19 Poudré.

Hooray! Can’t wait! Has anyone heard release date information for the US??? :)

    • Posted on 10 June 2011

I heard August, but don’t know anything for sure.

Dee, I can’t wait for this too! YUM

July/August, I read on one of the other blogs. The date I noted was that it is released on August 19 in Australia. I’ll be camping out overnight outside my local David Jones, if anyone cares to join me … ?

I can’t help but have mixed feelings. I’ve worn the original #19 off & on (more on than not) since it was released in the early 70s – it was the first grown-up perfume I asked for & received for Christmas. But seeing as I enjoy both #5 and Eau Premiere, maybe Poudre will be the same way.

    • Posted on 10 June 2011

Yes, let’s hope it’s like Premiere.

Exactly – let it be like Eau Premiere and not Cristalle Eau Verte (blech). This has so much potential to introduce an iconic fragrance to a new generation!

Ok, Ok, I am looking forward to testing this one and I sincerely hope that it’s as remarkable an update as they accomplished with Eau Premier. Our flowers are late this year so my bearded iris are just going now. I have these very old pale lavender and gold colored ones from a friend that smell amazing. I was just sticking my nose in them after lunch today and contemplating how beautiful, delicate, buttery and yet powdery the smell of iris flower actually is. I am certainly ready to be impressed by 19 Poudre. I wonder where it will show up first?

mmmmm….iris…just don’t cut them–because once you cut that stem, I swear, the scent changes! I have some very dark purple tall bearded iris that are lovely smelling. I’ve never seen the scent successfully reproduced in fragrance….then I got some Sarah Horowitz Perfect Kiss body cream….smells just like my purple iris….

      • AnnS
        Posted on 10 June 2011

I’ve never tried cutting mine. I figured they’d just wither up, but that’s interesting to note the fragrance changes. Thanks for the tip on the Sarah Horowitz – I’ll have to seek that one out.

cut an iris and suddenly it’ll take on a nasty musty cat pee note. I have no idea why….it’s very disappointing! :(

that must be it! You cut me, I stink on you!!

well, it works….I never cut an iris blossom!

          • Posted on 13 June 2011

That is very interesting because both Iris and Lilly of the Valley are very tricky notes for me with my skin chemistry. Sometimes the Iris is perfect and gorgeous and sometimes, I get “cat pee” . I am guessing it has to do with amount and variety of Iris used in the formula. And now I am going outside to cut an iris just to test!

I think the bottle shown is eau de parfum.
Have to find my bottle of 19 and refresh my memory of it.

Yes, and in fact, it may be aimed primarily at people who don’t wear No19, just as Eau Premiere roped in a whole bunch of people who didn’t like the original No 5.

After I posted I started to reflect upon the use of the powdery warm base to update classic frags – Eau Premier, Balenciaga Paris, Esprit d’Oscar, etc. And I’ve liked them all. It’s not such a bad style to use for modernization and much better than a fruity floral update. Can you imagine if they gave 19 the fruity-patch treatment? Ack. I hope they get this at our local dinky Macy’s!

      • Posted on 13 June 2011

Eau Premier – I own a full bottle. Balenciaga Paris- have a sample and haven’t tried it yet! (today for sure). Esprit d’Oscar – own a full bottle. Uh-Oh. If it is as well done as these are…my pocketbook is once again in trouble so I am hoping its not at Macy’s so it will be harder for me to purchase….okay never mind…doesn’t matter…if I like it that much, I will purchase…who am I kidding?

This jaded fragaholic is lacing on her running shoes to go get in line for this one! Go Chanel! Now, if they’d only do Bel Respiro in extrait . . . .

If it wears like Eau Premiere, I’ll be impressed. But white musk worries me. It might be my imagination, but white musk and musk in general seem to be showing up in a lot of releases lately (a number of the Profumi del Fortes, some of the Noblie 1942s) and I haven’t liked them. Are these new synthetic musks? Or maybe a new sensitivity that I’ve developed. But they often trigger an instant headache. MKK and Clair de Musc don’t do this to me. I hope that I can wear the new No 19, because I think that the composition looks appealing, musk aside.

    • AnnS
      Posted on 10 June 2011

I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that this musk works for me. I would hope that Chanel has enough resources to get one that won’t cause anosmia or blocking problems…

If this is a salute to the Pallida Iris….then why aren’t we seeing iris in the notes? (I’m sure that’s just a partial list….but it seems like they’d list “Iris” pretty close to the front!)

I can feel a tugging sensation in my wallet already….after all, iris and galbanum are two of my most favorite perfume notes….and I adore vintage 19…..I hope it’s available soon!!!!

Robin is back!!! And at full steam!!! Good to see you! Chanel Nº19 is one of the feminine Chanel fragrances I want to know. For the descriptions it seems that it can be worn by a man. Is it true? The notes of this new one sounds unisex.
Robin, do you know Habit Rouge from Guerlain? Does it have any similaritie with Chanel Nº5?

I really want to know the vintage Chanel Nº19. It seems to be green the way Eau de Campagne is. I’ll send you a message. :)

    • Posted on 11 June 2011

I’m sure No. 5 & HR have some notes in common, but they don’t remind me of each other, no. Either way, HR is a fantastic scent.

No. 19 is definitely a feminine to me — not a conventional unisex — but I think many men could pull it off.

      • moore
        Posted on 12 June 2011

Robin, I want a masculine perfume that follows the same line Chanel Nº 5 and when I read about Habit Rouge I thought it was what I was searching for. Nº 5 is really too feminine. I like too much that proeminent rose, that aldehydes, that called “old” lady smell. I remember my grandma and that’s a good memorie. It would be so good a masculine perfume a little like that…

        • Posted on 12 June 2011

          Have you tried Arpege?

          • moore
            Posted on 13 June 2011

If you refering to Arpege Pour Homme by Lanvin, I’ve tried. It’s very good but it isn’t what I’m looking for yet. For me it’s a lot like Burberry Touch for men, one of my favourites and a little like Au Masculin (Lolita Lempicka) and 212 Sexy Men (Carolina Herrera).
            Thanks so much!

          • Posted on 13 June 2011

No, I meant the women’s Arpege. I’m trying to think of other aldehydic florals that you might find easier to wear than Chanel No. 5.

No. 19 was always seen as The MODERN Side of Coco… in fact she (in some apocryphal stories of spurious nature) thought it was her best perfume creation! it was created the year before she died and is numbered after her Birthday (Aug. 19) and is also the fragrance seen as the zenith of the Chanel Fragrance continuum… No 5 by 1971 had become so universally well known that it seemed to be more known the the Madamoiselle herself… This was in a sense her reaction to No. 5 ubiquity… it was far more like her, Prickly, Unctuous, Unconventional (when one realizes that by that time Fragrance was forever changed by No. 5 and there were so many fragrances that aped the style of No. 5 that it in itself was no longer viewed as unconventional!) Subversive (the original formula Paired Iris against LEATHER! Quite Subverse) Audacious and always Chic! it was and stil even in it’s new and very surely not like the original forumlation is very Different and Difficult it is somewhere between a Green Floral (Galbanum, Iris, Vetiver….) Slammed Smack dab in the middle of the most Dense, Dark, Leather Chypre, (Leather, Musk, in the original Oakmoss, Sandalwood…) But that was Chanel… to this day the Re-formulation By Polge of Henri Robert’s Original is still VERY Uptown Chic with a Rich Classic Dark Drydown although Polge’s is LIGHT YEARS Fresher and more Legere than Robert’s!!!! This i think is to appeal to the more Downtown and Younger set and also to make the fragrance a bit less Frightening and more Approachable… Not every woman can wear No. 19 and most shouldn’t if they can’t handle a true masterpiece of Hard Core Perfumery! I await this and hope it is as good as it sounds without losing that essential bit of Pervere Edge that makes the original so Classic, Yet SO DANGEROUS! :-) <3

I am also looking forward to release in the U.S. I tested this in a fleeting way when it came out in the UK a few weeks ago, but I want to try it again of course. It is fun to feel and see real excitement like this about a new release. For me it was very timely because it also came just as I was becoming obsessed with the pre-reformulation No 19, and so it gave me ANOTHER version to be obsessed with for a little while!

29 years (!) ago it was Chanel 19 all over on my wedding day, from eau de toilette, bodylotion and even dedodorant. Very curious about this one.

Sounds lovely! It’s a pity that many of the No 19 bath & body product are no longer produced. I had the soap once, and loved it. Maybe the new flanker will pep up interest in the line and some of the b&b stuff will come back.

Monsieur Polge, can we have at least a teensy little bit of oakmoss in this? You put some in the last Chanel masculine (Bleu), you can certainly do it for a flanker of one of the great chypres.

I am curious to smell this, though I doubt it’ll be my thing.

Tried it today at the Chanel boutique in Selfridges… Those praying for oakmoss will be disappointed. It’s a fresh floral… but a very nicely done fresh floral (to me). I love the topnotes of the original No. 19 but it turns to unwashed hair after a little while on me (iris root?). This one has some amount of iris (which appeared after 5-10 minutes and disappeared completely after half an hour) and the base turned into slightly sweet white floral. Lasting power – an hour or two at most; and it stays close to the skin throughout. I did pick up a FB but I was on the lookout for an office perfume in any case (as my beloved Infusion d’Iris led to suspicions of blocked drains on one occasion!).

    • Posted on 13 June 2011

I am crushed at the thoughts of the lasting power … and my SOTD is Infusion d’Iris so you have my deepest sympathies. How on earth could someone accuse this lovely perfume of blocking drains?
