I really look forward to sampling this. I’ve become a big fan of ELdO after initially thinking they were ridiculous (and some of their marketing is, frankly, silly).

And I love, love Tilda Swinton.

I adore Tilda Swinton. Or SWINTON, as they call her at Go Fug Yourself. She’s awesome.

Ha! I was just thinking, isn’t it about time for Fug Madness? Tilda nearly took it all last year.

        Ginger and pumpkin? Hmmm… interesting.

SWINTON for the win! I’m not usually moved by celebrity anything, but I’ll give this a sniff for sure.

      • Posted on 27 February 2010

Every GFY post on SWINTON delights me. I like to pretend that Tilda is my fabulously kooky aunt who sneaks some gin when no one’s looking. I cannot think of a single Hollywood celebrity that I would have rather seen a perfume based on. And what unusual notes! I am really looking forward to this one, and to the Josephine Baker one that I think ELdO is also supposed to have cooking.

I adore Tilda as well. Fantastic actress. She is constantly on the worst-dressed list but I love her daring fashion sense – especially in this age when everyone dresses so safely to avoid said list. Bring back the 80s red carpets when hardly anyone had a stylist. Oh yes, and the fragrance sounds intriguing. Can’t wait to try it.

      Posted on 27 February 2010

I agree. If you make the worst dressed list, it’s just a sign that you’re not boring. (And if, say, you’re someone who wore a swan dress once upon a time and even though it’s years later and people are *still* talking about it? Bravo, Bjork.)

But about the perfume: pumpkin? Did somebody say pumpkin? I really will need to smell this.

    • Robin
      Posted on 27 February 2010

Oh, she dresses very oddly but it would be silly to say “badly” — they clearly love her at Go Fug Yourself.

Tilda is awesome and I just love the conceptual art copy. I can’t wait to try this.

I typically have an initial recoiling sensation whenever I am confronted with a celebrity scent, but I love Tilda Swinton. The juice sounds intriguing too. Must sniff!

      Posted on 27 February 2010

This is pretty low key…doubt we’ll see Tilda lighting up Times Square over it.

    • Posted on 27 February 2010

Yes, I feel like if Tilda does shill this at all, it won’t be the typical Britney/J.Lo/Mariah Carey ad copy at all. It would be more along the lines of “This is the smell of a nice pumpkin lunch spent with your husband and live-in lover.”

      • Auguszta
        Posted on 28 February 2010

LOL! That’s hilarious! As is Tilda Swinton.

  5. Posted on 27 February 2010

Oh Tilda! I fell in love with her after seeing her in Orlando. I totally need to try this.

    • Robin
      Posted on 27 February 2010

      That was a great movie.

    • kaos.geo
      Posted on 27 February 2010

I discovered her in Orlando. A friend of mine suggested that I rented it in ’94 (somehow it went under my radar in ’92 when it came out).

It was an exceptional performance, to say the least .

Regarding the whole red carpet thing, I am still undecided…
She is not as utterly disconnected as Bjork (as Miss kitty says, such a level of ”’Not Caring’ creates indelible results on the collective psyche hehehehe) and Mals/Annemarie (Half Drowned In a Curtain is genius! It brought to mind a dress that looked like a giant turtleneck sweater she once wore) And yes.. what is her thinking?

Anyway, the notes are a mystery. My curiosity is picked. :-)
      Team SWINTON!

      • mjr17
        Posted on 28 February 2010

I disagree that Bjork is disconnected. She is (and was with the swan dress, etc.) the avant-garde. Apparently people in the U.S. like their experimental art-style to enter the public discourse via someone (American) who enterprises the unusual – like Lady Gaga, who is not an innovator at all in my view – rather than a kooky and brilliant Icelandic (funny accent, etc.) who is exploring the boundaries of artistic media. I know you didn’t mention Gaga, I did. I’m just chiming in here to defend Bjork in this instance.

        • boojum
          Posted on 28 February 2010

I love Bjork (with and without the Sugarcubes). :) And I never do understand the fashion folk. They’ll rave about something truly hideous for its “daring”, pan something gorgeous as “safe”, and then, just when you think you have them figured out, they go the opposite way.

        • Joe
          Posted on 28 February 2010

For what it’s worth (and not wanting to interpret someone’s words for them), I read kaos.geo’s description of “disconnected” being a positive thing. I think I love Björk even more than I love Tilda. (Björk’s husband, Matthew Barney, is pretty darn interesting too.)

        • kaos.geo
          Posted on 28 February 2010

I did not mean the comment as a disrespect to Bjork (who I love) just that she is quirky.
Joe got my point (see below) She is “disconnected” in my opinion, in a way that she doesn’t care for conventions, an that has a huge impact, wether you like her or not.

I loved Debut, Post (IMHO a classic album, if not her best) and Homogenic. after that I did not relate as much. Dancer in the dark was too heavy for me, I left the theater angry at the character…and half an hour later I realized that I was so angry because I had “bought” the whole thing! she was extraordinary in that movie.

The copy reminds me of the Sandra Boynton** book on chocolate, where a blank page is left for white chocolate, with the comments (approximately)
“Looks like this; smells like this; tastes like this”.

I cannot wait to try this! I love SWINTON and I love the sound of those notes. I own Eau de Protection – it’s my only “celebrity” fragrance – maybe this will be my second.

    • Robin
      Posted on 27 February 2010

      See, eventually you’ll have a collection :-)

  8. Posted on 27 February 2010

Another vote for Ms. Swinton over here! As an actress, an icon, and an unrepentant eccentric. She rocks.

    • Helle
      Posted on 27 February 2010

Yes, she rocks! I will definitely sample this, because it’s her, AND the notes sound lovely.

    • Robin
      Posted on 27 February 2010

      Yep.

  9. Posted on 27 February 2010

I really admire Ms Swinton’s talent, but not her fashion sense. It’s not the eccentricity that bothers me so much as the fact that she always seems to resemble a drowned rat on the red carpet… (Please, Tilda, you deserve some lipstick, at least. You don’t have to go for Pretty, Vapid Sexbomb like everyone else, but Half Dead in a Curtain is too far the other direction.)

And this may be one of the few ELd’O ads that didn’t make me shudder.

    • annemarie
      Posted on 27 February 2010

Yeah, I kinda think that if she eschews lipstick but brings out a perfume – what’s her thinking? Still, she always goes her own way and you’ve got to admire that.

    • Robin
      Posted on 27 February 2010

Gosh, I guess I admire her even more for not caring. The whole “red carpet” thing is so utterly ridiculous to me.

      • CynthiaW
        Posted on 27 February 2010

While I freely admit that I would never have the panache to step onto a red carpet of any type without make-up, hair styled, lipstick, the whole nine yards – I admire SWINTON even more for doing her own thing.

I find it really hard to imagine what this will smell like based on the notes, but I’m very curious to try it.

  11. Posted on 27 February 2010

Because 1) Tilda Swinton is completely made of awesome, 2) ELO has a few losers but mostly makes interesting scents, 3) their Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection was fantastic, and 4) the smell of pumpkin (well, pumpkin pie) was used to such good effect in Christopher Brosius’ November, I am pretty desperate to try this.

    • Robin

      Hope Luckyscent will get it.

Another Swinton fan here. Pumpkin, ginger….heliotrope…sign me up.

    • Posted on 27 February 2010

The notes sound fantastic. Odd that it’s coming out in the spring, though… pumpkin sounds like a fall release!

  13. Posted on 27 February 2010

ME too! Me too! If this is as good as Rossy…wow! The notes sound wonderful (you can imagine Orlando inspiration), as did the notes for Rossy and that fabulous edgy rose that made me realise I do like rose. Easy to see Swinton wearing amazing ‘fumes!
Power to E ldO, a great house, and the not-over-the-top prices are much appreciated.
The naughty design ethic appeals to this ole’ rebel!

    • Robin
      Posted on 28 February 2010

The naughty design ethic doesn’t appeal to me at all — always seems like it’s trying too hard — but I do like the idea of a celeb scent for Tilda Swinton!

  14. MollyG
    Posted on 27 February 2010

Ah, SWINTON! This fragrance sounds as beautifully eccentric as she is. Something to look forward to this spring. :)

    • Robin
      Posted on 28 February 2010

Let’s hope…most of their scents (not all, mind you) have not been as eccentric as their ad copy.

  15. zeezee
    Posted on 28 February 2010

Oh dear. SWINTON is just about the only celebrity who a) would make me want to try the scent she’s fronting and b) the only one who might even inspire an unsniffed purchase. Which I won’t, but I would. If that makes sense. AND there’s all these notes I go gaga over *anyway*: ginger, neroli, heliotrope? Sign me up.

  16. Posted on 28 February 2010

Wow – I almost didn’t read this article (I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m so out of it regarding popular culture that I don’t know who Tilda Swinton is). I’m glad I took a peek, though, because a combo of mandarin, pumpkin, ginger, neroli, and immortelle sounds quite wonderful! Heliotrope doesn’t seem to fit with the other things, but perhaps it balances the warmth of the other ingredients (?)

    • Posted on 28 February 2010

I just looked her up. She is gorgeous! Looks like I’ve got some movies to be rentin’.

    • boojum
      Posted on 28 February 2010

Oh, don’t be embarrassed…be proud. :D There’s little in pop culture worth knowing. I do know who she is, but only because I have kids. I know her as the White Witch/Queen of Narnia (where she was truly terrible, as she should be).

    • Robin
      Posted on 28 February 2010

No need to be embarrassed, I never know who anyone is either. I’ve seen lots of her movies though.

      • Joe
        Posted on 28 February 2010

I don’t care about fashion either, but their writing is witty and hilarious. I suppose it could be viewed as mean-spirited, but I find it very entertaining… I cruise to that site maybe once or twice a month and always end up laughing a lot.

        • zeezee
          Posted on 1 March 2010

GFY is the only fashion- and celebrity-oriented site I frequent, exactly because I don’t find it mean-spirited. What I enjoy about it (apart from the very witty writing) is that they don’t descend to the level of bodysnarking (a term I first read on Jezebel, I believe: http://5resolutions.blogspot.com/2008/03/ban-body-snark.html) but keep it to criticizing the actual clothes. The feminist in me approves.

I don’t understand myself sometimes. I passed this sample pack up at LS, one of the FEW, and it’s probably the line I am currently most interested in. Oh well. This sounds really great, actually. I am looking forward to it.

    Love SWINTON!

    • Robin

for the first time in a long time… a fragrance that actually sounds like it smells New and Unique!!! Pumpkin! Ginger! Rose! Heliotrope! (which i LOVE In fragrances!) Immortelle! EGADS! Must Sniff For Sure… BTW… Just Smelled Idylle by Guerlain this weekend and must say it was a complete letdown!

    • Robin
      Posted on 1 March 2010

Sorry you hated Idylle! I thought it was nice, if not wildly innovative.

      • thenoseknows
        Posted on 1 March 2010

actually didn’t hate it at all… just wasn’t the SENSATION i was looking forward to from the description and the mental image i had in my head of the scent… that’s all… just was not as floral as i was hoping, like the BIG Guerlain Florals of Yesteryear!

I did manage to grab up a bottle of pure parfum of Vintage Lanvin Crescendo… OH MY LORD! That stuff is MOUNUMENTAL! WOW! so i am happy with that! My Mother loves it too, which is why i bought it in the first place!

        • Robin

My love for Tilda was expunged by her signing on to the Roman Polanski petition. There were quite a few Hollywood types I once admired that supported that dreck, but Tilda caused the most dismay. I’ll skip the frag, on that basis.

Looks like it comes in 50ml Eau de Parfum. The News Blog section of the Etat Libre reveals the inspiration for this being a beautiful poem by Rumi with the refrain “Like This” and you can hear Tilda reciting it … anyone smelt this yet? It’s more and more intriguing!

I finally got a sample of this from Lucky Scent and it’s a really amazing fragrance. It goes on hot and spicy, the ginger palpable and fresh. That fades into the background as the pumpkin and (on my skin anyway) almost a honey note comes forward and intensifies throughout the life of the fragrance. While I would probably swap for a decant to have on hand for occasional usage, I won’t pick up a full 50 ml of this. It’s not my favorite but it is a really wonderful experience and a great example of how a perfume can grow and change on your skin from state to another. It really is a work of art.
