Anne McClain, a graduate of the Grasse Institute of Perfumery, will be holding introductory perfume classes at Le Labo in Nolita the first Monday of every month:
LE LABO is launching introductory perfume workshops, entitled First Mondays in the Lab, taught by Anne McClain. The two hour course, with champagne refreshments, will take place in Le Labo’s flagship Nolita store every first Monday of the month, starting March 1st.
Sign-up is available on a first-come, first-serve basis by RSVP-ing to workshops@lelabofragrances.com. Class size is limited to 18; the cost is $75 and must be paid in advance.
In First Mondays in the Lab students will learn the fundamentals of perfumery, and become equipped with a basic understanding of standard perfume vocabulary and concepts. Through the lens of three of Le Labo’s signature fragrances, the workshops will cover how the inspiration for a fragrance is developed, how harmonious blends are made, and Le Labo’s approach to creating some of the most original and daring fragrances on the market. Throughout the course, natural and synthetic ingredients from the perfumers’ palate will be sampled, and their origins, properties, and uses will be discussed. Students will take home a 5 ml sample of a Le Labo fragrance presented in the class.

Oh, how I wish I could participate: “students will learn the fundamentals of perfumery”… sigh.
I am fancying myself preparing my own blends, like making my own big white florals or my own woody-honey comfort scents… double sigh…
Le labo is one of those brands that elecits mixed feeling (at least, for me!).
I love the packaging but hate the exclusivity concept, especially the city exclusives… (I find it “eclusive” in a rathar “negative” connotation that has nothing to do with real luxury). At the same time, I really wish I could try (and afford eventually) the vanilla 44, Gaiac 10 and Poivre 23…

FIT (NYC) has a real fragrance certification course that’s a bit more expensive but you’re in a real frag. lab with an esteemed professor, guest perfumers, accredited coursework, and you’re mixing and blending on site. Much more worth it, in my opinion.

This is a nice idea, but I wish it was cheaper. From the description, it sounds more like a marketing presentation by the LeLabo folks with wine and a nice sample. Not a bad way to spend an evening, but $75 sounds a little steep to me. Bergdorf events are generally free or around $20-$30 with the cost applied towards purchase, and their Donna Karen launch was enormous fun.
Sounds like a more serious course than you’d get at Bergdorfs though. But can’t say I’ve ever attended a real “course” at Bergdorfs.

It does sound like interactive marketing….but it still sounds like fun. Too bad it’s not local, even though Le Labo is a hit or miss line for me I think I’d be game to give it a try.
BTW Zazie– I am in complete agreement! I get very annoyed at lines that stress their exclusivity through artificially high cost, and the city exclusives especially (grrrrr) ….I too, apply a negative connotation to it.
It all depends on how it’s presented. I didn’t find the price that high for a 2 hour course, if in fact it’s more than marketing. But the city exclusives annoy me too.

It might be worth checking…I thought they’d done other workshops in the past.
