Donna Karan Iris ~ new fragrance

Donna Karan Iris perfume

Donna Karan will add Iris to the Donna Karan Collection this spring:

The latest edition to Donna Karan’s iconic wardrobe of fragrances is Iris, a unique and mysterious scent. Orris Butter, a precious note derived from the roots of the Iris, is blended with Iris Absolute and Violet flower resulting in a sensual and elegant fragrance which exudes femininity.

Donna Karan Iris will be available in 100 ml, concentration unknown, for £55, and in the UK will be exclusive to Harrods. (via press release from Harrods)

Update: additional notes include magnolia, rose de mai, vetiver and ambrette seed. In the US, Iris will launch in March and the cost will be $95.

Ooh…. I wish. Harrods is definitely on the list when I get my grand tour of Europe for my 50th b-day.

This sounds lovely and I adore the color of the bottle, even if the design of it seems somewhat tame for Donna Karan. I’ve always loved the alien shape of Cashmere Mist, the pebble bottle of Black Cashmere, and the monolithic design of Gold.

      Posted on 3 February 2010

Yes, but that’s the new collection bottle, like it or lump it! The BC pebble is gone too, and Gold is discontinued. Luckily they’re keeping Cashmere Mist’s bottle.

So happy I have two of the pebble bottles purchased at reasonable prices. Very cute but not super practical. I would love to see a set of the Collection bottles lined up in my perfume cabinet.

        • Posted on 3 February 2010

I do love the pebble, which I call my oversized worry stone. :) Boo to losing the old bottles…

    • Posted on 3 February 2010

It’s just a glossy black bottle. Nice but rather plain…which works too I suppose.

      • RusticDove
        Posted on 3 February 2010

No. Not a fan of the bottle. But at least it will keep the fragrance fresh. There’s that.

Interesting – Harrods were selling off the other Collection fragrances half-price after Christmas. I wonder why? An iris soliflore is intriguing – the lavender and jasmine scents were surprisingly nice.

    • Robin

      Oh, I wonder why too!

    Mmmmmmm…… I-R-I-S.

Maybe this will do for iris what Gold did for lily. But successful!

    Adding to list.

I did not love the other Collection Essences (assuming this is also one of the Essences, and don’t know for sure that it is) as much as others did, but they were nice. Hope this is a less one-note scent!

      • Joe
        Posted on 3 February 2010

If the one note is iris butter, I’m not as bothered, but yeah, let’s hope it’s something interesting!

          Posted on 3 February 2010

I could understand the Wenge wood one. But if what you need is a basic but gorgeous iris that you can layer (I think that was the point of the Essences collection?), c’mon…there are already plenty!

  5. Posted on 3 February 2010

I’ve been on a bit of an IRIS kick lately. As a matter of fact, just purchased Le Labo 39 last night ( among others ). I’d want to try this one, though the few DK’s I have in my collection I very rarely reach for. :-)

    • CynthiaW
      Posted on 3 February 2010

Oooh… I love the Le Labo 39. That and La Pausa are my favorite irises right now.

      • Posted on 3 February 2010

I have a decant of LP coming soon and SL ISM. I’m loving this LL, but the VC&A is my FAV! This post is not too NEW USER friendly is it? HA! Had to respond quickly, at work.

I love this! Everything has its own jargon and abbreviations, and this is the alphabet soup of the perfumista.

        • Joe
          Posted on 3 February 2010

C, I can’t believe you like ISM and didn’t fall in love with the TDC Bois d’Iris! Did those really end up on the fleabay?

          • Posted on 3 February 2010

No I still have the 3 travel bottles. Not that I didn’t like Joe, just wasn’t my fav of all the Iris scents I’ve been buying. :-)

        • CynthiaW
          Posted on 3 February 2010

I have ISM coming, too. I can’t wait to finally try it. I didn’t really care for the VC&A Iris, but I probably should try it again – same with the DelRae. Well, I liked the DelRae, but I liked Debut better and I really only loved the DelRae layered with Kenzo Amour. I should try that again and see if it was a fluke.

          • ggperfume
            Posted on 3 February 2010

            Which Delrae is iris?

          • CynthiaW
            Posted on 3 February 2010

Mythique is the iris – although it has quite a few other notes and lists orris butter and not iris as the note. And I was wrong anyway – I liked that one okay, but it was Bois de Paradis that I loved layered with Amour.

Oh, I could totally see that…I like to layer BdP with SDV.

        Posted on 3 February 2010

Except me! I have not been able to make myself love the iris. I’m convinced I must be anosmic to it, because I just don’t really smell anything but a soapyness. Or is that it? That doesn’t seem like that could be what people rave about with iris.

        • Robin
          Posted on 3 February 2010

Well, no, not to me. Many iris perfumes don’t smell at all soapy. More like a rooty/earthy smell.

        • RusticDove
          Posted on 3 February 2010

Ditto on the rooty/earthy aspect. Mmm-mmm.

I feel your pain. :D If I had a dollar for every word-flip when I should have known (or rather, DID know!) better….sigh. And I remember each occurrence for about 20 years. It’s a heavy, heavy load. LOL!

Hiris. And Iris Silver Mist. Bring on the dirt.

    Posted on 3 February 2010

I tried my first iris, VC&A Bois d’Iris, over the holidays and I love it. I like what I have smelled from the Donna Karan collection, so I will probably try this one. I thought they were all EdTs, but I could certainly be wrong. The other thing I’ve noticed in my limited sampling is that they have a similar base that reminds me of Black Cashmere. Could just be the ones I chose. And Cynthia, we are definitely making a pilgrimage to the Le Labo boutique in Dallas.

    • CynthiaW
      Posted on 3 February 2010

Yes! Did you get my email? Maybe I sent it to some random Julia at yahoo – lol.

    • Robin
      Posted on 3 February 2010

      Probably is an EdT, yeah.

    • monkeytoe
      Posted on 3 February 2010

If it is one of the essences, it will probably be an EdT, but the “feminine” (Chaos, Signature, and Black Cashmere) scents in the Collection are EdP.

OOOHHH — and Now Here’s Something to Get Excited About!!!! The Donna Karan line seems to be maintained with a bit of care, so here’s hoping! I like very much the “Signature”.

    • Robin

They do generally do a good job, agree!

    Posted on 3 February 2010

I don’t mind the new DK bottles, they’re like a blank slate so the scents can speak for themselves. But I’m a sucker for anything minimalist and black.

    • abirae
      Posted on 3 February 2010

I like ‘em too. I think the’re really nicely done.

    • Robin
      Posted on 3 February 2010

      True.

  11. Posted on 3 February 2010

I’m terribly excited for this- I love violet combined with anything- and the Donna Karan line is consistently pretty good. But I’m a little confused… is it exclusive to the UK? Why is the price only given in pounds??

    • Robin
      Posted on 3 February 2010

No, I’m sure it will be in the US too. Price is given in pounds because I got the info from Harrods.

  12. SmokeyToes
    Posted on 3 February 2010

Iris root, absolute and violet? Oh god I’m frothing at the bit already.
Iris with anything is usually a hit with me.

Hope it will live up to everyone’s expectations!

Oh my. This sounds dangerously interesting. I’ll contact my Donna Karan SA at Holts and see if she has any news on Canadian availability.

    • Robin
      Posted on 3 February 2010

Harrods is to have it in time for Mother’s Day, but that’s all I know, sorry!

  14. Posted on 3 February 2010

It will be interesting to see this take on iris. The only Karan I’ve tried is Gold. I thought it was nice, but lacking a bit in grace and refinement. Just a little “too too” for me (I like the lily in Vanille Galante and Lys Mediterranee better, though even the LM is almost too much for me).

    • Robin
      Posted on 4 February 2010

If this is one of the Essences, it will probably be a much simpler scent than Gold.

I’m a huge fan of “Florentine Iris” by Farmacia Munstermann.

    Iris is the new black!

I just tried this, and love it; It immediately became my new go-to scent. As in, would be difficult to manage without it. I love the way it’s cool without being aloof. At least, that’s how it strikes me.
