The USB Scent Flower

The USB Scent Flower

There are already a few USB-powered room fragrance gadgets, but to my knowledge this is the first done up with plastic flowers.

The USB Scent Flower comes in four scents: Ocean Breeze (“Our most unisex flower with a burst of exotic grapefruit establishes a warm lingering trail of salty ocean air and soft white beaches.”), Purple Lavender (“In remisence of traditional potpurri, the sweet and devine fragrance of our lavender flowers exude a warm, tenderly fresh and slightly spiced scent.” [sic]), Pink Jasmine (“Our most captivating and intriguing scent. This complex bouquet of exotic fragrance entices you with sublime bursts of jasmine.”) and White Chamomile (“The wonderful aroma of freshly picked chamomile flowers with hints of fresh green herbs. Globally enjoyed by men and women alike.”).

$9.99 each, includes one “fragrance flower device” (the image above shows all four) and three refills, for sale at usbflower. (found at gizmodo, who found it at chipchick)

    Those are really cute!

They’re cute, but I don’t know that I want an air freshener that close to me when I’m working. Plus, it would interfere with my SOTD.

I don’t want it that close to me either!

so they only start to scent when you plug them into a usb port?! Novel idea!

Yes — it heats up the element underneath, I think.

seems like an easy way to leak scented oil all over your expensive laptop.

Seems like a great idea for dorm rooms that are, hm, less than fresh and clean?

hm, I’m not sure if spraying some artificial odour could help to cover the lack of hygiene…

You’re probably right. On the other hand, when a room is clean and fresh-smelling to begin with, I tend to like to smell only my perfume in it, not a room scent. Guess I’m not their target market.

    Cute idea.

Didn’t know these already existed, and not sure why you’d use one instead of the kind you plug into a socket… if you go for that kind of thing. Maybe if you’re working at a nasty smelling wifi hotspot? :) Also probably something teens would like I suppose.

I think the aromatherapy factor is big. I’ve been thinking that I’d like some soothing scents in my study space. I actually carry Origins Ginger Essence in my backpack as a study aid, and a little lavender cloud around my computer might be nice when I’m studying in a private room. I don’t think I’d dare bring it to the library though.

Yeah, there are various USB scenting devices. And people love USB devices in general, I guess that’s why?

I guess. To me it’s just another thing that I can mess up and break my computer. :D

Does the USB drive have storage too? or just air freshener?

Never mind, I just answered my own questions at the website – which is actually kind of funny. I don’t know if the airlines would actually let you use it on a plane to mask your seatmate’s smelly foot odor though.

They never seem to stop people from spraying scent on themselves on the plane, unfortunately!

My luck, I’d sit next to someone who’s allergic to such things if I used it on a plane. Hello IFRA. But it is a really cute idea and something I think I’d enjoy now and then. I wonder if bath and body product companies will be jumping on this soon. It’d be lovely with C&E’s sandalwood.

Yes, would be nicer actually if you could just buy the unit & use your own scent.

      • Posted on 16 January 2010

Yes! I find myself going all geeky and imagining one with a few dozen scent receptacles and elaborate programming, so that you can go through a few hours of slowly changing “scent music”.

You could also layer them by using more than one USB port. That might be interesting…..
