On holidays to Paris & Milan, Perfume Heaven, in other words. Damage so far: Diptyqu Virgilio, Francis Kurkdjan Apom Pour Homme, Serge Lutens Fourreau Noir & Chergui and now... Costume National Homme. Of them all, I have to conceed, this IS the ONE. Was probably seduced by Kurkdjan's "Maison" shop and his "piece of me" story for Apom, and Serge, well, it is Les salons du Palais Royal Shiseido after all isn't it? Costume National Homme: standard bottle (the least beautiful of the lot), ok price (comparatively), but the scent, oh the scent. It's definitely in the same family as other Costume National Scents, particularly Scent Intense and Intense Parfum. It opens almost like Intense Parfum, but a little fresher, probably due to the (listed) notes of grapefruit and bergamot, but fear not, this is not your generic fresh notes permeating the new wave of Hermes or Diptyque colognes. These notes float perfectly over its underlying aromatic ambergris base, before taking a backseat after roughly an hour. A mildly sweet ambergris note, common to other Intense scents, then take over, but this time round, more mellow and "masculine" with a twist. This smells like nothing out there in the market, in a good way. A perfect personal skin scent, it doesn't scream Look At Me, but anyone close will definitely pick it up. Sillage is excellent and long-lasting. For those curious about it, what are you waiting for? Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did and will for months / years to come!

I stopped by the San Francisco Barney's yesterday and this was the only new scent that really stood out. It smells very interesting, changing every few hours, sometimes spicy, sometimes cedary/sandalwoody. A day later, I can still smell it on my wrist, a winy smell like Bond No. 9's West Side. This seems to be a big seller for them, they're down to the last bottle of the second batch they've had since the beginning of the year. I think I may be getting this eventually.

In the US, "sober" is definitely used in that sense, just not "sobriety", which tends to refer to the drinks/drugs.

If it's translated from Italian, it definitely means sober in the sense of “marked by sedate or gravely or earnestly thoughtful character or demeanor”. We have the other meaning, but in this context it would sound absurd. We often say a "sober style" which isn't the style of an ex-alcoholic, but in English I gather it must be less common.
