L’Artisan Al Oudh ~ new fragrance

L'Artisan Al Oudh

L’Artisan Parfumeur will launch Al Oudh, the latest fragrance in the line’s travel series, this year in time for the holidays. The new fragrance was developed by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, and follows the recently introduced Havana Vanille.

Al Oudh was inspired by the Arabian peninsula; the notes include cumin, cardamom, pink pepper, neroli, rose, castoreum, civet, leather, musk, oud, sandalwood, Atlas cedar, patchouli, myrrh, incense, vanilla and tonka bean.

L’Artisan Parfumeur Al Oudh will be available in 100 ml Eau de Parfum. (via extrait.it)

    Ahhhh tonka bean!
Seems like Tonka and Oud are very fashionable these days.
I really cannot imagine what this scent might be like. Cumin? Cinnamon? And what is castoreum?

      From the glossary (http://www.nstperfume.com/perfume-glossary/)

Castoreum: a secretion from the Castor beaver, or a synthetic substitute. Used to impart a leathery aroma to a fragrance.

it might be like an ~*oriental*~ type fragrance inspired by Arabic oudh perfumes, but I could possibly be pulling that out of nowhere.

That’s it! Mr. Duchaufour is trying to KILL me! I haven’t even managed to get my mitts on a bottle of Havana Vanille yet !

Cinnamon? where’d you see cinnamon? is there info on the L’artisan site?—I’d better go look…..

Daisy, just correcting: Mr Duchaufour is trying to kiling OUR credit cards rsrs
Now i want to l’artisans: havana vanille and this new oudh.
Looking the notes, i think we’ll have for the first time a strong fragrance from L’Artisan.
I think it’ll be spicy, with animalic touches, some sweet incensy touches and a great amount of resinous oud. Just the way i love!

yes, and his plan seems to be particularly effective! And unfortunately, the piggy bank being on “empty” doesn’t stop the lemming or the drooling.

I’m pretty sure this is not on the L’Artisan site yet. Sounds good though!

Robin, Mr Duchaufour comented on an interview that he had an oud fragrance just to be launched. And it looks like, according to this interview, that soon we’ll have another l’artisan, focused on vetiver.

Yes, I knew it was coming, just don’t think it’s on the L’Artisan site yet :-)

          • Posted on 14 September 2009

I sort of like their bottles plain. The decoration on this one is distracting to me. Count me in, though, as one who wants to try this. L’Artisan is probably my favorite line!

        • Posted on 14 September 2009

Somehow my bottle comment went in the wrong place. A new vetiver-based fragrance from L’Artisan? CAN’T WAIT!!!

          • Robin
            Posted on 15 September 2009

Yes, it’s good news! Their original Vetiver was discontinued ages ago.

I hope there isn’t cinnamon, that would be the one thing that would kill this for me. Which might be good, since I need to stop buying anything at all for a loooooong time! So broke, so sad…

Ilike cinnamon in food but not perfumery, for some odd reason. I know from the notes I would like this latest L’aP though, i just Know it!!

  3. Posted on 14 September 2009

    Oooh…. Here’s what I want:

New travel coffret! New travel coffret! New travel coffret!

But then they’d have to do a third one, wouldn’t they. Let’s see, what would we like to see in that third slot? Keeping in mind M. Duchaufour’s proclivities…

But–did everyone see on Grain de Musc–Denyse says they are discontinuing Vanilia as soon as HV is fully launched.

    • Robin
      Posted on 14 September 2009

Yeah, maybe they are, but I no longer trust L’Artisan on discontinuations…they sometimes say they’re discontinuing something, and then it reappears.

2nd you on that coffret though!

      • boojum
        Posted on 14 September 2009

3rd, for sure! Did they have one already before I was tuned in? I’d love smaller sized bottles of Dzongkha and Timbuktu (haven’t tried the Fleur yet).

        • Robin
          Posted on 14 September 2009

Someone will have to correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t think they’ve ever done a travel series coffret. But Timbuktu was definitely available in 15 ml — I know because I have a 15 ml bottle of it — I think it was packaged with one other scent that wasn’t in the travel series, but now I can’t think of what it was. Ack, I have such a bad memory!

          • Posted on 14 September 2009

Just saw your comment about the new vetiver, above, so that would make number three, no?

Somehow I thought there was a “men’s coffret” with Dzongkha, Timbuktu, and….Navegar? Mechant Loup?

Or I could just be making it up.

          • Robin
            Posted on 14 September 2009

Don’t know if the vetiver is in the travel series though. And yes, there was definitely a men’s coffret, actually 2 if memory serves (one with 3 bottles & 1 with 4? maybe?). Just never a travel series coffret. If I’m right, which isn’t all that likely.

          • boojum
            Posted on 14 September 2009

Oh man…Dzongkha, Timbuktu and Navegar would have done me in completely, I love all 3.

          • Posted on 14 September 2009

The grey-flannel case, called the Men’s Charmer Trio, contained 15-mL spray bottles of L’Eau de L’Artisan, Mechant Loup, and Navegar. There was also a tempting Discovery Set of 5-mL bottles of those three plus Tea for Two. Surprising they didn’t toss L’Eau du Navigateur into the Discovery set; it has always struck me as the most obviously manly of the L’Artisans.

          • Robin
            Posted on 14 September 2009

            Thank you Pyramus!

Pretty sure Navigateur was out of production at some time? Maybe? It’s only recently been restocked in the US, at any rate.

Speaking of discontinuations…I am DISTRAUGHT that they discontinued L’Artisan Parfumeur pour Bottega Veneta! Such a beautiful collection, especially Intreccio N.1.

And I’m also sad that they discontinued their bath line for the perfumes. I’m sure the Jatamansi and Cote D’Amour is still in production, but the shower gel and cream for Premier Figuier is gone… Devastated.

        • Robin
          Posted on 14 September 2009

Oh dear, is the BV collection gone? I didn’t even know. I was really hoping they might turn them into personal fragrances at some point.

            Posted on 15 September 2009

Same here! I’m just hopeful they push through with the Olivia Giacobetti planned eau de toilette for Bottega Veneta…and I hope it’s still in collaboration with L’artisan. Her leather scents are brilliant (well, all of her work ;) )

        • Posted on 15 September 2009

          Hello!

We just wanted to clear up a few things. The L’Artisan Parfumeur bath line has not been discontinued. Rest assured that the shower gel and body cream for Premier Figuier are still available on our website. Also you can find the complete line of Bottega Veneta candles at the L’Artisan Parfumeur Perfume Gallery in Henri Bendel NYC. They are more than happy to ship anything you need throughout the country. Thanks!

            Posted on 15 September 2009

That’s excellent news! I actually called a Paris store and asked – and they said it was discontinued. Maybe there was a misunderstanding.

  4. Posted on 14 September 2009

I LOVE THAT BOTTLE. I WANT THAT BOTTLE.

And I’m going to New York again in November and will certainly be going to Bergdorf Goodman, which is just down the street from our hotel, and the chances that I will get out of there without a bottle of Havana Vanille are very small, and if they have this, too, well, god help me.

HA…save those pennies! If it isn’t at BG, check Bendels…that’s the only full-sized L’Artisan boutique left in NY, IIRC.

        Posted on 14 September 2009

Barney’s has the full line in NYC as well.

        • Robin
          Posted on 15 September 2009

Yeah, I think several have the full line, but L’Artisan seems to use the Bendels spot as the NYC “flagship”…they’re holding their events there, etc.

Pyramus…I spoke with my friend at Bergdorfs today, and she told me they no longer carry the L’artisan line.

This is the first of their bottles I’ve really loved and the juice sounds right up my alley. I hope it’s stronger than their stuff usually is on me.

    • Robin

Yes…love that they’ve “decorated” the bottle this time — wish they’d do it more often.

    Posted on 14 September 2009

And speaking of Havana Vanille—did anyone else notice that first-in-fragrance says that they will have it in stock on Sept 23rd ? of course shipping from Germany is like a second mortgage…..28euros….egad.

Like Serge Lutens, L’Artisan has overdone the sweaty notes. Fragrances from both houses smell too much like the subways in France.

    • Robin
      Posted on 14 September 2009

      Love your user name!

Do you mean this one is too sweaty, or just L’Artisan in general?

    Posted on 14 September 2009

Oh, this is trouble. I’ve been wanting to try out some of the oudh fragrances that have been coming out, but I was never confident enough to order samples. Now that L’Artisan has jumped on the bandwagon…well, I’ve never met a L’Artisan that I didn’t love. :) This has “large decant” written all over it.

    • Robin
      Posted on 14 September 2009

LOL…I’m sure L’Artisan would rather hear you say “full bottle” than “large decant” ;-)

      • boojum
        Posted on 14 September 2009

Perhaps they should take note of the clamoring for smaller bottles, then! :)

        • Robin
          Posted on 14 September 2009

I wish! I loved the 15 ml bottles. Even 30 ml bottles would be welcome.

          • RGM
            Posted on 14 September 2009

I totally agree. Whenever I see the 15 ml bottles, I can’t resist buying. At least I get to test drive the perfume before committing to a full bottle. For $135 a pop, I need to be sure!

      • Rachel
        Posted on 14 September 2009

Well, I’d rather hear myself say “full bottle” than “large decant”, but I’m a poor college student. :) I’m lucky I got a small bottle of Passage D’Enfer.

        • Robin
          Posted on 14 September 2009

LOL…hey, I’m more likely to end up with the large decant myself, didn’t mean to pick on you! And my Passage d’Enfer is in the old 15 ml :-)

          • Rachel
            Posted on 15 September 2009

Haha….I figure if I resist the “full bottle” temptation, then I can have more “large decant” sort of scents. :) And I love my 15 ml bottle…not only is it irresistibly cute, but it didn’t break the bank either. Now, if I could just find one for “Tea for Two” and “Dzongkha” I would be a happy, happy person indeed. :)

  10. Posted on 14 September 2009

Oh dear Lord, another one from my favorite (or one of) perfumer…I have instant yearning for it! I don’t care that oud is everywhere these days! Duchaufour knows exactly which buttons to push with me. I fear for my bank account.

I just got a chance to try Havana Vanille over the weekend, and I was disapointed. It reminde me of Bois Farine, which I hate. The drydown was vegetal and I could barely detect any vanilla or tobacco in it. I’m also scared by the Oud description above, because it lists cumin. The L’Artisan for Aedes scent was so cumin-heavy it smelled like sweaty BO on me and I could not wear it. I will DEFINITELY be sampling this Oud scent carefully before lemming it!

    • Robin
      Posted on 14 September 2009

Oh, so sorry you hated Havana Vanille! I loved Bois Farine too, AND the Aedes scent — so I’m clearly no guide, LOL…if I love the Oudh, you’ll know to stay away from it ;-)

  13. Absolute Scentualist
    Posted on 14 September 2009

I’m in the sample category. This sounds great, but I can’t afford to fall in love with too many more frags at least for a little while. Regarding HV, some of the reviews I’ve read have been mixed, so I’m really hoping to sample that one soon since I’ve marked off Oct. for a split. I haven’t met a vanilla I didn’t like, and adore Guerlain SDV, but still…

This looks really stunning, and would make a good alternative to SOD when I want something spicy and heavy, but maybe a bit more divisive than usual.

    • Robin
      Posted on 15 September 2009

It certainly sounds divisive…all those animalic notes!

  14. memechose

it will launching Bendel’s, that is the largest selection of L’artisan in the USA. Beergdorf no longer carries the line and barney’s severely cut back to put Byredo in as its exclusive.

  15. Joe
    Posted on 21 September 2009

I missed a lot of posts early last week and am catching up. I am hoping that this one is seriously ANIMALIC to differentiate it from other spicy ouds. I like seeing civet, castoreum AND musk. Dirty! Please!

I look forward to maybe sampling it in NY in December. Those who wonder where to try them in NYC should remember that Aedes stocks a full selection of L’Artisan.

    • Robin
      Posted on 21 September 2009

That’s true…but still think the first testers will probably be at Bendels. By December hopefully everyone will have it!
