Lazy Friday poll ~ perfume at the movies

lotr2

Today’s poll was suggested by Claudia. Name a favorite movie, and then tell us the perfect fragrance to wear while watching that movie. Claudia’s example: Eau d’Italie Bois d’Ombrie, which she wore for Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which she saw with a live orchestra playing the soundtrack:

…leather for the horses’ saddles, tobacco for Aragorn’s pipe, smoke for the fire in the Rohirrims’ hearths, the darkest of iris and a melancholy, earthy, almost metallic violet for war. Absolutely perfect to go with the gloomy atmosphere…

Yours?

Nice! Love the movie(s) and the frag…now I want to watch LOTR tonight. :D I got nothing, other than the obvious Potter/Mandragore combo, and there, I’d say it’d only work for the first one. Can’t wait to see what the more creative folk have to say, though!

LOL…that was the only one I came up with too. Maybe tonight when it cools off, my brain will start working.

Actually, I accidentally or rather serendipitously wore Mandragore when I went to see Pan’s Labyrinth. Set the mood quite well for me. Not to ruin Claudia’s beautiful example, but the scents that remind me of the LOTR cycle are: chicken broth, popcorn, hot dogs and nachos. I went to see all three at a theater the day before I was to have a medical procedure. I couldn’t have solid foods, but I was allowed chicken broth so I brought a thermos with me. It was ok for the first movie, but at intermission between the first and second, people went and got their food and the theater was filled with the smell of popcorn, hot dogs and nachos. Normally this doesn’t sway me, but that day I nearly cried I felt so deprived. lol It made watching Frodo & Sam suffer make me feel more empathetic than sympathetic. :P

hotdogs, nachos, cheesy chili fries…..ackkk….this is why I can’t even go to a movie theater any more…..all those heavy smells and the munching! :-(

        Posted on 21 August 2009

Well, it usually doesn’t bother me or entice me, for that matter, but this was a huge, packed theater and it made my poor empty stomach just ache and rumble. The nice girls sitting next to me offered to eat their popcorn outside if it would make me feel better. I thanked them for their kindness but told them the damage was already done. lol

Oh my, that’s the first chicken broth at the movies story I’ve ever heard.

Well, when we pop “Elizabeth” or “Elizabeth: the Golden Years” into the DVD player J douses herself with DSH Tea Rose because it’s the closest to Elisabethan Rose we have…..I spritz on some Eau Suave or a dab of Bal a Versailles parfum—Cate Blanchett will have to forgive me the “frenchness” of it, but it’s the most retro-historical scent I have—then we proceed to make snarky comments about Joseph Fiennes and his poofy pants dancing the Volta with a young Elizabeth I. Ok, he’s scrawny, but he’s got beautiful eyes….J thinks I’m sick.

Two movies and corresponding fragrances immediately leapt to my mind: Amouage Lyric Woman while viewing Moonstruck and Acca Kappa’s Calycanthus while enjoying Summertime, the 1955 movie starring Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi. Lyric seems to embrace the mood shared by Cher and Nicholas Cage as they fell in love at the Opera. And the sunny disposition of Calycanthus captures the summer love between the older, spinster teacher or an adventure of a lifetime and the younger, married Italian man she fell in love with.

Wow! I was just thinking of what I’d rec for Moonstruck, and I think you really nailed it! — All that romance and velvet!! I was going to say Magie Noire, but I think Lyric is really a good choice!!

This is kinda obvious, but while watching “Annie Hall”, “Manhattan” or pretty much any 1977-1993 Woody Allen movie, wear So New York. Not just because of the name, but because it creates that romantic coffeehouse atmosphere, for me anyway.

Some weird movie/fragrance associations: While watching the original Wes Craven “The Hills Have Eyes,” I was wearing 100% Love. Now that scent always has a creepy/gory association for me. When I saw “Little Miss Sunshine”, I wore Passage d’Enfer for the first time. Now Passage d’Enfer equals Steve Carell and Alan Arkin, to some extent.

Although male hobbits do not need to shave, it should surprise no one that Shire fashions in fragrance spread from the barbershops of Bree, which offer haircuts, and in high-end establishments, pedicures, to both Big and Little folk. On many chests of drawers in the Shire stands a bottle of Old Spice or bay rum, worn for weddings and birthday parties. Dandified young hobbits sometimes branch out to Penhaligon or Creed.

Female hobbits prefer soliflores, esepecially rose, lavender, and carnation. Rosie Gamgee owns a bottle of Diorissimo that Sam brought her from foreign parts. He asked for Chanel No 5, having heard that it’s the best, but the elvish saleswoman advised Diorissimo.

    Galadriel wears Après l’Ondée.

I can think of several sultry perfumes to wear while watching films noir or great “dame” movies, but need suggestions for some of my favorites. What to wear for:
    LA Confidential
    The Full Monty
    The Commitments
    Once . . .?

    • Pamster

Yes, booze, and tobacco. And soapy, for Jimmy’s frequent bathing habits. Maybe a powdery note for Joey’s mother’s house (I’ll bet she kept cats and wore Mitsouko). And tea, for goodness sake. The Commitments is also a fave of mine, as I’m sure you could tell by now. (“Heroine kills!” And the picture of Elvis right above the picture of Pope John Paul II. I love it.)

The English Patient: L’Air du Desert Marocain

How about l’Air du Desert Marocain for Lawrence of Arabia or The Sheltering Sky (although that one may make you not want to wear it again because it is so sad)?

    Chinatown for ….Chinatown?

Hmmmm. I have to think about this

    • AnnS
      Posted on 21 August 2009

Tama – we must be in some sort of perfumista mind meld! I was gigglilng thinking of the rec of Chinatown for Chinatown, but I suggested No 18 instead because of that insanely chilly exterior of Faye Dunaway underneath which is all that turmoil! And I was trying to think of Sheltering Sky too, but my mind went blank! Trying to think of my fav movies and my fav fragrances at the same time caused a bit of a system breakdown!!!

We are discussing perfumes to wear while watching DVDs right? Because I can give a long list of perfumes I don’t want anyone wearing while he or she’s sitting beside me in a movie theater. Let’s start with Red Door…Aramis…Poison…

Great topic! I think for Jane Austen movies a floral-water type, but nothing too sweet, maybe even a little earthy. Penhaligon’s Bluebell?

“Lost in Translation”… something tea-like maybe? With flashes of neon and ScarJo’s angst and tears? ;)

Haha, “Cold Comfort Farm” — Dzing!

For some reason when I saw today’s poll my brain went into overdrive! Hence:

Phantom of the Opera – Voleur de Roses
Ladies in Lavender – L’Heure Bleue
Affair to Remember – Je Reviens
South Pacific or Nim’s Island – Mayotte
Mamma Mia – Fiori di Capri
    The White Countess – Mitsouko
    Emma – Diorissimo
Dreamer – Dzing (Dreamer was filmed here in Lex., Ky, and Dzing smells exactly like my skin smells after a long day out at the horse sales.)

I was just wondering about this same topic last week, when my father and I had a “Cleopatra” orgy — oops, that didn’t sound right — the old Liz Taylor/Richard Burton 4-hour extravaganza. Liz is always lounging around in the bath, pouring in fragrant substances, and at one point someone commits suicide by drinking poison, and the person who discovers him mutters something about how weird the Egyptians are, with their poisons that smell like perfume. Come to think of it, Poison might not be a bad choice for old Cleo!

Ooooo–I love doing this? I swear, every film has a fragrance. These are the ones that stick-out for me, either because they quickly evoke a type of fragrant environment or I remember wearing a scent while watching them:
    1. “My Man Godfrey” – “Joy” extrait
    2. “The Lord of the Rings” -”The Unicorn Spell” Les Nez
    3. “Pan’s Labyrinth” – “Chypre Rouge” Serge Lutens
    4. “Wuthering Heights” – “Gris Clair” Serge Lutens
    5. “The Great Gatsby” – “Chanel No. 22″
    6. “The Return of the Native” – “Serge Noir” SL
    7. “Enchanted April” -”Chaldee” Patou
    8. “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” – “Euphoria” or “CK” by Calvin Klein.
    9. “Romeo and Juliet (1968)” – “Douce Amere” SL
    10. “R + J (1995)” – “Stella” by SM or “Heart” by Garden Botanicka
    11. “Marie Antoinette” – “Sillage de la Reine”, “Spring Flower” by Creed or “Promesse L’Aube” MDCI.

I can only imagine what I’ll be wearing when “Dorian Gray” finally comes out…

    • Robin
      Posted on 21 August 2009

Love Joy for My Man Godfrey, which is one of my favorite movies of all time.

      • Nlb
        Posted on 23 August 2009

Watching “My Man Godfrey” is like watching the gears work on a fine-crafted timepiece–everything moves together perfectly and will stand the test of time. I like how “Joy” adds the perfect era-specific mood to films from the 30′s (and even 20′s); a warm, rich coziness…all hazy dreams and ideals. “Joy” brings such a vintage intimacy to a space—you really do feel as if you’ve fallen through a space in time while wearing it.

    • Rachel
      Posted on 22 August 2009

For Dorian Gray, I’d wear Costes, but layered with something slighty weird, so you get the “button-up, formal, beautiful” along with the off-kilter.

The only movie I distinctly remember wearing perfume to was Etro’s Shal Nur to I Am Legend. And no, I didn’t do that on purpose and even regretted it intensely. Wrong mood in every way. I did, however, used to work at a movie theatre and I wore a lot of Chanel Chance and Passage D’Enfer. As for what SHOULD be worn…

You’ve Got Mail: Marc Jacob’s Daisy, of course. ;)
Romeo and Juliet (1996): Scent by Alexis Courtesan
The Lion in Winter (2001): Passage D’Enfer

I’ve been on a serious Monty Python binge lately. What should I wear while watching them? :)

        Monty Python. . . something with a crunchy-frog accord. . .

        • Rachel
          Posted on 22 August 2009

I’m so glad someone got the daisy reference. :)

And crunchy frog accord, for sure. Or maybe spam and albatross. I’d gladly abstain from perfume for a good several months if I could just find out what the Python boys wore. People that interesting have to smell good. It’s, like, a universal axiom. The only time I remember them discussing scent on the show was during the “Chemist” sketch when a man is looking for “halibut” aftershave and he’s offered something with tiger, almond, and something else. Hilarious episode.

      • Nlb
        Posted on 23 August 2009

Oooo–being the cheeky troublemakers they are, the Monty Python boys would have to wear something absurdly English, or with an intentionally ironic, poshy or stuffy vibe: “Greenbriar” by Caswell Massey, “Green Irish Tweed” or “Royal delight” by Creed or “Ivy league” by Domenico Caraceni. I’d also love to hear how some people would scent those wacked-out “Fellini” films or “Last Year at Marienbad” :D

        (two more!)
        Alice in Wonderland (1966) – “5 O’clock au Gingembre”
Picnic at Hanging Rock – “Fleur de The Rose Bulgare” or “Bois de Paradis”

        • Rachel
          Posted on 23 August 2009

I think the intentionally ironic would be perfect. :) I just keep seeing Eric Idle with the word “Satire” flashing on and off in front of him. If anything encompasses the Monty Python spirit, it’s that image, for sure. And if not intentionally ironic, something shockingly flamboyant. They did go in for the shock factor, at least to an extent.

I was actually tipped-off to it from an NST profile–when I saw the gorgeous papered containers the line came in and their outrageously reasonable prices, I thought “Wow–they’re really doing it for the art of creating a tribute to the flapper because there’s no way they could make a killing with those prices”. I was really pleased. I’m finding I love a hint of saffron with my rose–it amps up the velvetiness of full-bloom flowers. Saffron amplifies the experience of big roses–the feeling of pure richness you get from inhaling over-ripe petals. No frou-frou buds, there…

Yes, the original Wicker Man with Chrisopher Lee and Britt Eckland is absolutely amazing. Eerie as only a 70′s movie can be.

Oh goodness of course I meant the original classic, not the bad Nicholas Cage remake which I couldn’t even bring myself to watch.

    For some musicals:
Singin’ in the Rain – Apres L’Ondee
Top Hat – Ralph Lauren Tuxedo
My Fair Lady – Yardley English Rose
The Wizard of Oz – Let Me Play the Lion
Cabaret – well, um, Gres Cabaret!
West Side Story – Bond No. 9 West Side, of course!
One could go on and on… Fun topic!

OK, first – am totally commenting blind. I didn’t read anyone else’s response.

Moulin Rouge! w/ Equipage. It’s my fabulously French night, I might even drink some kind of Champagne when I do this, and in all honesty we’re talking about one of my most favorite movies and one of my most favorite scents. Each reside in respective Top Five List(s).

I adore Equipage – it’s so complicated and different and moody and bipolar and romantic and sad and fun and consistently awesome. And MR!, let’s face it, is bipolar and moody and romantic and fun and sad and consistently awesome.

I mean – in that last scene before Satine dies, with Nic Kidman in that epic, awesome outfit performing – what do you smell? That’s right. Equipage. Merci beaucoup. A toute a l’heure.

Awesome thread! I’ve got a few more:

Rocky Horror Picture Show- something deceptively sweet, and innocent, but actually pretty naughty for that slut Janet- Micallef Note Vanillee
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe- CB Walking in the Air
BBC Robin Hood tv series- CBIHP Wild Hunt
    Xena tv series: Boudicca Wode
Harry Potter: CBIHP M3 November/ BPAL Samhain

How about wearing Demeter’s Thunderstorm while watching Twister? LOL

Actually that might be a bad idea… especially after tornado Thursday, might cause a freakout… thankfully those weren’t in my neighbourhood!

I always believed that “interview with the Vampire” = L’Haie Fleurie by L’Artisan, as this fragrance was inspired by the flowers growing in the hedgerows around Maire Antoinette’s gardens at Petit Trianon, and complements the scenes set in the 18th century beautifully. But now, with thanks to Perfume Shrine who offered this suggestion, perhaps the perfect union would be Etro’s dark and wonderful Messe de Minuit.

Absolutely. MdM is not only perfect for that movie but, I believe, should be Louis’ signature scent. I adore MdM but it does reek of Catholic guilt and self-flagellation to me.

      Posted on 23 August 2009

“La Haie Fleurie…” is perfect for “Interview with a vampire”–all preserved, waxy loveliness, masking a macabre reality!

      • Nlb
        Posted on 23 August 2009

“La Haie…” makes me think “beautiful death or oblivion”. Victorian funeral parlors, stories of “ladies in white” or the story/marketing ploy of “L’Inconnue de la Seine”…

Whenever I think of films with an air of powdery decay to them–like “The Draughtsman’s Contract” (“Promesse L’aube” and “Enlevement au Serail” MDCI or “Tryst” by Lady Primrose) or “Amadeus” (“Tryst” or “Amarige” Givenchy) I always think of fragrances heavily blended with orange flower and/or tuberose and privet or hawthorn.

Not particularly my favourite movie but I’m currently watching the Tom Hanks movie Splash. I put on some Lolita Lempicka L in honour of this thread, but L’Artisan Navegar would have worked too.

What perfume would you wear to view this movie?

I live in Iowa and though I’m not terribly fond of that movie, any time I see that movie or “Field of Dreams” or the part of “Sleeping with the Enemy” where Julia Roberts is hiding out in the smalltown Midwest, I can just smell the hay, sweet corn and clover, fresh cut grass, the loamy upturned dirt and of course the manure. lol I have yet to find a fragrance with quite that combination. Although I just recently tried DSH Film Noir and somehow that reminds me of horseback riding on a sweltering summer day out in the country.

Haven’t seen a movie in a while (can’t seem to stay awake for a whole movie once the kids are asleep), but did think the other night that wearing Divine by Divine seemed the perfect scent to wear while watching a Mad Men DVD. Though a modern scent ,to me it is the epitomy of this era. Found myself wondering what the characters would wear…
    - prim and pretty Betty Draper: maybe L’Air du Temps for day and Chanel No 5 for an evening out
    * sweet Peggy: perhaps L’Aimant talc
    * vampy Joan: Shalimar or something equally irristable
    * Rachel the dept store heiress would have access to the best options – Joy, Fracas, perhaps the newly released Madame Rochas

Hope this isn’t cheating. Or too off topic.

Mad Men! Love. You are spot on with Joan, as they do have a character commenting on her Shalimar at some point in season 1.

“Mad Men” IS the epitome of “Fracas”–at least, considering the style of the ladies. The guys would be in “Greenbriar” or smell of something like “Antico Caruso”–almond shavesoap and barbershop leather.

I recently fell for Balmain Jolie Madame (thanks in part to Angela’s beautiful review) and it feels perfect for Charade, one of my favorite movies. The violet gives it that feminine playfulness and the leather adds the danger and mystery!

Hmm….off the top of my head I’m thinking of two Hitchcock movies – Notorious w/ Ingrid Bergman – definitely Vol de Nuit in extrait – both for her and the movie as whole.

The other one that came to mind was another one with Cary Grant, To Catch a Thief. Bandit of course, although Grace Kelly seemed more like a Chanel 5 or a Chamade girl in it.

      • Nlb
        Posted on 23 August 2009

When I think of Grace Kelly in anything–in particular, “High Society”–I always associate her with “Fleurissimo”.

I went to see Pixar’s Up wearing Histoires de Parfums 1828, inspired by Jules Verne. Absolutely perfect for that movie and its “Spirit of Adventure”.

When I think of The Lord of the Rings I imagine a fragance like Comme des Garçons Hinoki. Pure woods for those wonderful forests.

Instantly, I thought of CB I Hate Perfume’s Burning Leaves but I would layer it with something. Perhaps something with pine or spice? I just can’t think of what. Plus there is the scene in the movie where they are trekking through the mountains so there should be a cool watery layer.

Tiffany for Breakfast At Tiffany’s, or L’interdit of course. And I think Chamade for Wuthering Heights, and Apres L’ondee for Dead Poet’s Society.
Has anyone smelled Tiffany, it sounds like I might really like it?
