Nooka by Nooka ~ new fragrance

Nooka fragranceNew York-based watch and design house Nooka has launched their debut fragrance, titled simply Nooka.

Nooka eau de parfum communicates a universal language that transcends opposites. A synergy of scents, both familiar and foreign, instinctive and original, mental and physical, that come together as one. Japanese Yuzu sprinkled with pink pepper. Polished steel wrapped in vintage leather. This fusion of natural essences and synthetic accords creates the next generation of precious liquids, expressing each wearer’s multi-faceted individuality. Developed and designed by Matthew Waldman and Pierre-Constantin Guéros.

The notes for the light, fresh fragrance include yuzu, vintage leather, pink pepper, coriander, tonka bean, gloss paper accord, cypress bark, musk and pink sand accord. Nooka is meant for both men and women, but according to Nooka founder Waldman, “unisex is a bad word”.

Nooka is available in 75 ml Eau de Parfum ($80); samples are also available ($5). It can be purchased at the Nooka website. (first quote via nooka, second quote and additional information via wwd)

Wow, that’s quite the description. I’m glad their trying to appreciate my multi-faceted individuality. Also, gloss paper accord? I kinda like the bottle though.

I know, I liked the “universal language that transcends opposites”: different and the same, stupid and witty, repellent and attractive…

The gloss paper accord might be the only thing in there that appeals to me.

That would be *they’re* It’s really, really hot out. That’s my excuse.

I didn’t even catch the grammatical error. I think we all have heat stroke, so you’re probably safe from criticism for a while.

      Sounds very CdG to me.

I agree Robin, it does sound like a CdG scent with the paper accord. Their description sounds like a badly written final paper trying to be really smart but with no content.

        My first thought!

Well, my first thought was that Nooka is not too far from Nookie, which would be funny.

Hmm. You could have passed this off as an August Fools’ joke if I didn’t know better… I probably have a far too nasty mind, but that name is borderline obscene. In any case, I’ll skip the gloss paper and pink sand — too synergistic and multifaceted for me.

    • Daisy
      Posted on 31 July 2009

I know! when I first glanced at it , I said “Nookie? it’s called Nookie!!?? And what the heck is “pink sand”? and why would sand smell ? NEXT!

      • Joe
        Posted on 31 July 2009

You’re bad, D. At least I left “borderline obscene” to the imagination. :D

        • Daisy
          Posted on 31 July 2009

LOL well, you know how I am! (apparently slightly worse than borderline obscene)

and scroll down to the second page. It’s a picture at a recent horse sale of a yearling in the auction ring, standing on PINK SAND!!! This sales company was recently bought by the sheiks of Dubai, and no one has been able to figure out the pink sand used in the sales ring either!

          ACK! Sorry, link not working.

      Posted on 31 July 2009

They’re hoping to appeal to the Japanese market, so I don’t think they’re kidding about “light & fresh”. In which case, possibly not as interesting as it sounds.

Don’t worry Joe, that’s the first thing I thought too!

    Posted on 31 July 2009

    Nooka? xD

Polished steel sounds fun. It almost lost me with the yuzu-pink pepper accord but, to be honest, I don’t know if I’d be able to pick pink pepper (say THAT three times quickly!).

Now I’m dithering over buying a sample. If it were part of an order at TPC, I’d be all over it, but all by its lonesome, I don’t know if it’s worth it.

    • asuperlongusername
      Posted on 31 July 2009

And yes, the copy is quite funny. I loooove “mental scents!”

      • Daisy
        Posted on 31 July 2009

maybe that’s where you just THINK that you smell something….

    • Robin
      Posted on 31 July 2009

Guessing TPC will get it eventually (?)

      • asuperlongusername
        Posted on 31 July 2009

I mean, the sample is great. I just think $8 is quite a bit for shipping, you know? I wouldn’t feel bad if I was getting 10 samples, but one sample?

        • Robin
          Posted on 31 July 2009

Oh, didn’t realize! That makes it too much, agree.

  4. annemarie
    Posted on 31 July 2009

I suppose pink sand is ‘mental scent’ – the result of imagining what sand would smell like if it was pink. Sand mixed with cochineal. Yum.

  5. RossM
    Posted on 31 July 2009

Hmmm…I like it and I don’t, it sounds interesting and it doesn’t, I want to try it and I don’t, I’m confused and I’m not…
Lol seriously though I like things that are new and ultra modern (I havent reached the ‘vintage’ stage of my journey) and I’m very curious to try this.

  6. Posted on 31 July 2009

Harbor Island , Bahamas has lovely soft pink sand because it is made of nothing but pulverized conch shells . ( natural )
It doesn’t smell any different from regular sand tho…bummer .

  7. laken
    Posted on 31 July 2009

LOL! RossM. How about this: It appeals to one facet of my personality, but not the the rest of the facets. Seriously, I would definitely try this. I wonder if the coriander mentioned is the leaf or the seed? I like the smell of the seed but not the leaf. Fusspot, eh? Does anyone know which part of the coriander they mean ?Yes, I like the sound of this.

    • RossM
      Posted on 31 July 2009

Lol Laken – perhaps hopefully it will appeal to one of my many multiple personalities!
And being somewhat new to this perfume obssesion I am not sure about the coriander thing. And being somewhat dense overall I’m not even sure what coriander smells like! I probably shouldn’t even be posting comments seeing that I have no actual knowledge of perfume whatsoever!

      • laken
        Posted on 31 July 2009

Same, I have virtually no knowlege of perfumes, just a very long obsession with them. I think people can probably tell I have no knowlege from my comments, lol

    • Robin
      Posted on 31 July 2009

I can only assume that if they meant cilantro they would have said…but I don’t know.

  8. Posted on 31 July 2009

It does sound rather CdG, and rather silly: does any other art form describe its output in such abstruse, florid terms?

That is a really great bottle, though, the first truly original one I’ve seen in quite some time.

    • Robin
      Posted on 31 July 2009

Agree on the bottle, and also like the weird color of the juice.

    • boojum
      Posted on 31 July 2009

Love the bottle too. Unfortunately, the juice will be a definite pass, since I think I’ve pegged yuzu as an allergen for me.

    • angelainthesky
      Posted on 31 July 2009

Oh Pyramus, you only have to read a couple of art catalogues from one of the hundreds of new galleries in Chelsea to see where they got their wording from. It’s all a bunch of nonsensical blah, blah.

  9. Posted on 31 July 2009

Wouldn’t it be funny if one of us falls in love with it? I do like a yuzu opening, pepper in general, soft leather (if that’s what they mean by vintage), and beach smells (if that’s what the pink sand adds?). The “gloss paper” had better not evoke the workplace, though, LOL.

    • Robin
      Posted on 31 July 2009

I have a feeling it will be much cleaner than it sounds: along the lines of CdG Odeur 53, another not-nearly-so-weird-as-it-sounds fragrance.

      • laken
        Posted on 31 July 2009

I’d say you’d be right there, Robin!!

      Posted on 31 July 2009

I have a long history of making fun of things and then falling in love with them. Ask my husband ;) Kidding!! Seriously though, I am kind of curious about their interpretation of gloss paper accord.

    • CynthiaW
      Posted on 31 July 2009

Maybe gloss paper smells like a magazine?

I don’t know why this ad copy strikes me as any sillier than most ad copy, but it does. I don’t think that I’ve like any of the stainless steel accord or ultramodern scents either, so it’s probably a pass – although I’ll sniff it if I see it.

The cheese stands alone… I thought it said “Hooka” at first. Then, I thought it said, “nookie”. I guess a combo of hooka and nookie could be very good for sales in a certain demographic, lol

    • Daisy
      Posted on 31 July 2009

LOL “what’s that smell?” “oh, that’s just my Hooka Nookie!”

Now Joe is reallllly embarrassed to know me!
      **snicker snicker**

      • Joe
        Posted on 31 July 2009

No. I thought TwoPeas’s comment was absolutely hilarious. I think the target demographic would be those guys in the other post who were using that Spanish Fly Body Wash by Dial.

I wonder what it would be like if L’artisan came out with a really crappy watch? Something like one of those plastic calculator things you get at wall mart, except dipped in glitter. To “reflect the amazing indviduals sense of god-like style.”

On sale at L’artisan’s website for only $125.

Do what you do best. Cadillac, Nooka, etc- stick to what you do well and try and prevent yourself from polluting your art with an army of “etc.”

Sounds like a whole lotta hokum, but I’m just as intrigued by “gloss paper accord” as the rest of you! When I was a little kid, I was obsessed by the smell of different books — in fact, I was once very, very bad and cut up a book of mine just because I thought it smelled nasty. If they can reproduce the scent of glossy museum exhibition catalogues, however, I’m sold!

    • Robin
      Posted on 31 July 2009

I like the smell of most books too. I even like the smell of old musty books.

  16. laken
    Posted on 31 July 2009

I like the smell of all sorts of weird things. Plastic, rubber, all sorts of textiles and books as well as the conventionally nice things like flowers etc.

Do you remember being in grade school and getting those pieces of paper that had the mimeograph of the assignment printed in purple on it? The first thing we all did when we got it was put it up to our noses and take a big whiff!

    • Daisy
      Posted on 1 August 2009

oh yeah, the purple copies smelled soooo good! There was huge anticipation amongst us eager 2nd graders as to who would be picked to go to the office to pick up the days copies….the greatest of honors…nose hits all the way down the hall!

    • Robin

      Yes! Great smell.

    • TwoPeasInAPod
      Posted on 1 August 2009

I loved the smell of mimeographs so much I used to volunteer to run them in the office for the teacher!

That makes me sound like a 9 year old addict desperate for a fix.

I’m surprised that Demeter hasn’t made that scent, yet. They have Play-doh …

  18. Posted on 20 January 2012

The fragrance is on sale now, and I’ve read a review that it’s metallic and powdery at the same time. I’m very interested..
