I’m really confused by the name. Firstly, it seems far too similar to the Lubin. Secondly, as an Italian fashion company, why is it in French? A mite pretentious, methinks.

I know looks can be deceiving but I think the bottle is rather ugly when I think of how delicious Armani’s fashion sense and design style can be.

I really don’t like that shot — hard to tell if the bottle is ugly or just the way they shot it.

I don’t even notice anymore…everybody in perfume likes to use the French.

And Idole d’Lubin is so little known, I hardly think it matters for an Armani department store scent, you know?

Yes, perhaps I should accept the French and move on :)

LOL…I know it makes lots of people crazy, but there are already so many things about the fragrance industry that make me crazy — I haven’t got time for this particular issue! Didn’t mean to dissuade you though :-)

It’s a classic but strange Italian convention–fragrances need to be named in French (or in English for some modern introductions). Thankfully there are exceptions to the rule.

But an alternative angle of looking at this: L’Oréal (its Designer Fragrance division to be specific) runs the Armani fragrance division. From all accounts it steers a tight ship: surely people factored in all the conventions before registering a name.

It all sounded awesome to me except pear, which almost certainly means the opening is going to disappoint me. We’ll see.

The bottle reminds me a little of EL’s Sensuous. I’m not impressed by the notes, or the direction Armani seems headed in with their general release frags… I’m still shaking my head over Diamonds.

    • Robin
      Posted on 23 May 2009

Yes, it does look sort of like Sensuous.

      • Posted on 24 May 2009

It also looks quite a lot like Cartier’s Le Baiser de Dragon.

As for its being “a real tribute to femininity”, unless they really amp up the florals (or unless it’s a fruity floral, god forbid), it doesn’t sound particularly feminine: in fact, it sounds sort of like Rosine’s Rose D’Homme. I’ll have to give it a try.

Diamonds was a serious misstep for them. I don’t know if I’ll ever trust Armani again! :) Seriously, though, I would agree that the fashions are wonderful…fragrances…not so much.

(BTW, there was a period last fall where whenever I got free samples, Diamonds was always included. I actually almost cried the fifth time it happened. Noooooo! The saleslady said, “But it’s a new one, Diamonds Intense!” That’s not BETTER! Ahhh…!)

I don’t know how Diamonds sold…I do know they really want a top 5 spot and so far they haven’t clinched one on the women’s side.

Hello All! Hello My Dear Fearless Robin! Again, Love this site. i come here at least twice daily… But again… i have to be a disesenting voice… LOL!

I Actually LIKE this Bottle (Ok The top is a little Wonky!) But I love the shape of the bottle and I think the notes sound rather scrumptious! I am one of those people (hateful as i may be) That Gloriously wallows in Pear when it is in a fragrance (Petite Cherie, Anyone????) I Adore It! and also. I may be in the minority, and i wanted to hate it, i was All on Pointe to hate it, but i thought, seriously, don’t laugh…. that Diamonds was actually Very Nicely done, loved the rose accord to it and the sensuous brightness of it, as well as the Raspberry note! it turned out to be WAY more sophisticated than it seemed it would be from the description of it! The Kitchy bottle even made me smile! it is something i would easily buy This so…. I am not as Speculative about Idole, i am waiting to get a sniff… i think it will be surprisingly good!

I don’t know if I hate the bottle, I think I just hate the photo! But you liked Diamonds more than I did. I did like Armani Code though…but I guess they’re still chasing after a top-seller, and neither Code nor Diamonds got them there.

Re: the name, even if Idole de Lubin is relatively obscure, it’s still in trade, so how can they use the name Idole for this one? The powers that be tend to be quite strict about these things. Lawsuits have ensued over less.

That said, I think it sounds interesting on paper, but so far most of the Armani Prives have underwhelmed me, and Diamonds – meh.

I’m waiting for this because I have a project. To find an Armani for women that I like. So far there isn’t one, though I like a few of the men’s scents a lot. Maby this is the one for women that does it.

Disagreeing on the bottle. I find it nice. But then I tend to like very simple, minimalistic, bottles.

I haven’t found one either…but refuse to adopt that as a project ;-)

They could have gone the nostalgia route and brought back his original 1980s scent for women. Pity.

Never smelled it, was it wonderful?

A take-no-prisoners aldehyde Oriental of its time without the gaucheness of Giorgio (dear God, I can still smell it on every single female in the Métro) or the shrillness of Knowing (ick). To my nose, it was much deeper than Opium–maybe loftier is the better word. It was Greta Garbo at Studio 54

I imagine you are speaking of Armani’s “Gio”, which was his first scent for women? (Then he came out with Aqua di Gio which was much less floral and more aquatic.) I do remember loving the original Gio at one time, but I absolutely hated Giorgio. I still have an old bottle of Gio and just sprayed a little teeny squirt on my hand just to see if I still liked it. (I didn’t want it to overtake Byredo’s Green which I am wearing today.) I still kind of like it but don’t think I really want to smell like that now. It’s amazing how we grow out of some scents and grow into others.

Agreed! Used to drown myself in Issey Miyake. Re Armani, the scent I was referring to came out in the early 1980s (1982?)–the Gio line emerged in the early 1990s. Merci-merci à toutes/tous!

Does anyone know fragrance bouquets similar to the old GIO ?

    • Robin
      Posted on 4 July 2009

      I don’t, sorry!

    • Posted on 9 September 2009

I have both GIO as a sample and Idole, and though I consider Idole not that bad (but I forgot i immediately!) you can not! compare them.
GIO is nearly a masterpiece, at least when you think of it as a massmarket product. It hits the nice betwenn Givenchys Le De and Lanvins Arpege.
Unfortunately GIO will not be coming out again I guess, but I found a 100ml bottle. For more then 80 Euro:-(

OMG! Another new release i really like! Idole d’Armani has to be my favorite from Armani so far for sure! It has a nice, pretty, sweet opening but O when the saffron kicks in its truely a keeper for me! Im loving the bottle too! Im so glad they have a 30ml for 40 bucks! I could afford that what w/ all the other new fragrances i want!

I got a sample but haven’t put on skin yet….and didn’t really smell it in store since I’d just smelled all 6 of those D&G Anthology thingies. Sadly though, I’m usually underwhelmed.

Nordstrom has it now, not sure if it’s going to Macy’s but would think so.

I consider it similar constructed to Fleur de Liane, but more “plastic” and with pear and white flowers instead. Might induce headache.
