I once browsed through the 1999 edition, but it was a long time ago and I can't really tell how the two compare. In the second edition Charles Sell writes: "Although he [David Pybus] has been less involved in the editorial work of the second edition, the concept stems directly from that of the first and so is still the fruit of our collaboration."

Thanks for an intersting review - I was wondering about this book! I have the old version from 1999, and it seems that they have kept most of the contents, including the sumptuary law, and updated the text with some more recent examples. I noticed that while the first edition is "compiled by David Pybus and Charles Sell", this one is "edited by Charles Sell" and also states "From perfumer to consumer" on the cover. I'm guessing that they are aiming at a broader target group this time, and that they have tried to package the information in a slightly more reader-friendly way (for those of us that are not so familiar with chemistry). Very good, I think!

Thanks Joe! I found that some of the chemistry is explained really well, but then as soon as it goes into detail, I'm lost. I'd need a tutor to help me through those parts :-)

Great review, Marcello. I'm always interested in reading bits about aromachemicals here and there -- although I'm sure the chemistry in this book would be way beyond my level of understanding. It seems like a great reference, though, and the non-scientific chapters sound very interesting. It's always nice to see your book reviews, by the way.

Thanks AnnE! I can assure you that the general tone in The Chemistry of Scent is quite different from Avery Gilbert's book. If the technical parts don't scare you, I'm sure you'll find it a very rewarding read.

Marcello, I enjoyed your review on this very much, thank you! I recently went on a perfume-book-buying spree (as opposed to the more usual perfume-buying spree), and this one is next up on my list. I'm looking forward to it, and thanks for giving your blessing on skipping the pure chemistry chapter. :-)

At the moment, I'm going through Piet Vroon's book, which contains an awful lot of useful stuff. I'm definitely keeping it, though, since I will probably won't be able to remember most of it, lol! The book I'm *not* keeping is Avery Gilbert's. I just went back and re-read your review fo it; you're quite the diplomat. I found his narrative style so off-putting that I couldn't bear to read past the first chapter. I will have to read your future reviews more closely. :-)

That 1770 British sumptuary law is a fascinating read in and of itself! And how cool that your dad repaired old saxophones. Thanks for reviewing this, I imagine the chemistry would be way over my head but it sounds like there's still a lot of interest there.

you're welcome, E! It's a great reference book, even when you don't read it from cover to cover. Like you said, the authors take their subject seriously in a non-condescending way.

In that case, you know more about chemistry than I do :-) I'm sure you won't be disappointed. And who knows, it might inspire your son too!
