Gravatars & Identicons

A reminder: registered users can get their own gravatar (the little image next to your name in the comments) by going to gravatar.com and signing up for an account using the same email address you used for your account here.

Yesterday, commenters without gravatars saw a rather generic “mystery man” image next to their name. Today we’ve replaced those with identicons — geometric images associated with your user name. If you hate your identicon, you can still go get a gravatar.

Otherwise, everything seems to be running smoothly at the moment other than the still-missing 8000 comments, which I hope to find later in the week. Do comment or email (robin at nstperfume dot com) if you find a broken page, or have any other problems using the site. And if you missed it, the We moved post explains most of what is new at Now Smell This.

Posting partially to see what my identicon will be. But really to say, great job updating the site! I was a frequent reader, but always ended up having issues setting up a user name so never commented.

Glad to see everything coming along!

Yours is nice! I haven’t yet seen one I really hate, other than some of the colors.

Those geometric icons are great! Now I am tempted to remove my gravatar to see which one I get.

      Ta da! Did it work?

      • Robin
        Posted on 25 March 2009

I’m sure I’ll see it when my cache clears…for now, still seeing your lilies!

      Posted on 25 March 2009

It did work, but I think I like everyone else’s better. ‘~)

I will live with it for a bit and see if it grows on me. Or maybe I will get fancy, put my photo back up and then take it down and see if I get a different geographic design. Do you think I need a life?

      • Robin
        Posted on 25 March 2009

I don’t think you’ll get a different design, but I’m not positive…if you click on the indenticon link in the article, it explains how it’s generated.

    • divinemama
      Posted on 25 March 2009

Nope, same design. I changed it to a different photo. A photo I took at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Yes, I do need a life. Ha!

Hey, change it as often as you like ;-)

I have to say…the whole gravatars thing is way cool. I’ve never had one before so it was hard to choose. Spent at least 10 minutes pouring over my pictures….then finally picked a water lily from my very own koi pond….then my daughter blasted me for not picking a picture of a DAISY! sheesh, can’t seem to make anyone happy these days!
Then everybody is getting the amish quilt patterns today…. I wonder what I’d get…but I’m too lazy to switch, so I’m sticking with my pink water lily….I’m sure my fish are pleased with me.

It’s nice to have a gravatar from your own garden!

      • Daisy
        Posted on 25 March 2009

aww, thanks…but I can’t take any credit…I stuck it in the water and let it grow…no skill involved. Right now the pond is nothing but water, rocks and some very disgruntled looking fish. When they see me they swim over obviously wondering why I won’t feed them. But you can’t feed koi in really cold weather so I feel like a great big meanie.

I love your pink water lily, Daisy! And now that I know it is in your backyard, I like it even more.

      What is yours??

    • Daisy
      Posted on 25 March 2009

I was wondering that too. I think it is a dark haired woman standing in the moonlight with her back to us….like a moon goddess type praying to the Lady ?? Or I could be completely wrong….

I wish we could enlarge the gravatars to get a better look.

  6. Posted on 25 March 2009

Does ist work?! It just popped up like that in my WP blog! It works too easy sometimes…

    • Robin
      Posted on 25 March 2009

LOL…sometimes it works too easy, but more often whatever you want to do turns out to be way harder than you thought :-)

      • Daisy
        Posted on 25 March 2009

lol –you mean like having/raising children? I know that’s much harder than I thought!

        • Robin
          Posted on 25 March 2009

Yeah, that’s one example. I was thinking more computer stuff, but hey, it applies all over!

My MIL has a mug that says, “Raising children is like raising corn: it’s hard work, it takes a lot of time, and there’s no money in it.”

So true of so many things that are worth doing, though. (Thanks again, Robin.)

Hi Robin!!! Just walking around here to send you some greetings for your new home… and of course to test the identicon. He-he… playing like a child with a new toy…

It was work…it’s always more work than you think it will be, no?

Speaking of work, hey, where’s the next quarterly guide?

      • Posted on 25 March 2009

        Ah, yes. The quarterly guide…

It’s done. I will put it up as soon as I figure out (1) what Contribute means when it tells me “object is not a file” and (2) why it does nothing but tell me that. That is not what I call a contribution. That has been my week. I am sure you understand.

Wonderful new site – so happy to get settled in and start posting again (I was bartamy on the old site, but a job change and holidays/family/etc kept me from posting much).

Can’t wait to catch up and chime in! ;)

Congrats to all at NST who made this possible!

Some of the geometric thingies are really nifty!
I’ll go play around with it some more and see if I like mine. I spent waaay too much time on picking and cropping a gravatar already, but hey! Gotta look good. :)
I like how it’s much easier to recognize everyone now.

Trying out a Hawaiian quilt gravatar. Haven’t settled on a gravatar for sure yet. The identicons are kinda cool!

    • mals86
      Posted on 26 March 2009

Hi, Haunani – those Hawaiian quilts are so beautiful, aren’t they? The CEO (um, that’s what I call my husband, sort of in jest) and I stayed in a little mom-and-pop hotel on the Big Island a couple of summers ago, and the halls were decorated with framed quilts. I’d never seen anything like them before! And I live in the Appalachian Mountains, so I have SEEN some quilts.

      • Posted on 26 March 2009

Hi, MALS86. They ARE gorgeous, aren’t they? If I had the patience, talent, and time for such things, I would want to make a Hawaiian quilt.

      • RusticDove
        Posted on 26 March 2009

Thank you Robin – it’s a few roses that I dried for potpourri and they were so pretty [one of them actually kept it's purple color - hard to do] I put them in a vase and took a picture instead. I’ll probably change gravatars a lot tho – cause I have so many lovely images saved on my computer – plus I get bored easily. haha

        • Robin
          Posted on 26 March 2009

Looks like people here get bored really easy — there’s been lots of switching going on!

Hi M, nice to see you!

Zanadia has a nice selection — I was there (online!) last week nosing around. Have you seen those “pussywillow light” thingies in person — are they nice? I was tempted to buy.

No worries, but if you can’t see your change, try clearing your browser cache — that usually does the trick.

    Posted on 27 March 2009

I know this is late, but I seem to be running into a Catch-22 trying to obtain a gravatar. I re-signed to NST using my old user name. When I try to activate my account on Gravatar I’m told my user name is already taken (by me, I assume) and I’m sent over to WordPress.com and told to log in under my user name. Unfortunately, when I try to do this WordPress.com does not recognize my user name and password. And my NST account will not let me change my user name. I’m feeling like I missed the gravatar boat, so to speak. Has anyone else had this problem (or is it only me that is web challenged?) I can only hope I get a decent indenticon.

    • Robin
      Posted on 27 March 2009

So, let me make sure I understand: faraway is the username you want here, but it’s already taken at gravatar.com?

That’s ok. Just use a different username at gravatar — all that matters is that the email address on both accounts matches.

      Does that make sense?
