Perfume in the magazines: Allure, January 2009

Allure, Jan 09Perfume coverage in the January issue of Allure (which is surely the thinnest in recent memory?), and please comment on any fragrance coverage you've seen in other fashion & beauty magazines lately:

Cover: Eva Mendes.

Scent strips: nary a one! I've been subscribing to Allure for several years now, and this is the first “unscented” issue I've seen.

Editorial coverage: The Beauty Reporter section includes a “Smell This” feature in which random passersby comment on the new C-Thru fragrances (sold at Walmart, p. 28) and a blurb on Ralph Lauren Love (“The $2,200 Scent”, not sold at Walmart, p. 30).

That's it! The recession has arrived at Allure in full swing, apparently. The entire issue is 112 pages.

    Happy Friday :~)

No scent strips at all?! That's strange for a fashion mag….

Happy Friday to you too! And not a moment too soon, LOL…

Seriously, this issue looks like it's been through their “diet makeover” feature. I read through it in about 10 minutes.

It doesn't look like they had much of a budget for the cover photo… what a dreadful shot!

Lucky was suspiciously slim this month, too.

She looks like she just rolled out of bed and hasn't had time to get dressed or comb her hair yet.

Oh, I do apologize for Eva. See, she overslept for the shoot b/c she'd spent the night with me. So sorry! :D

P.S. She can roll out of my bed looking like that ANYTIME!

I received my issue in the mail yesterday, and it's lousy. Just lousy! No perfume articles, no Perfume Guy, no nothing of any fragrant interest. I have kept up my subscription because I thought Allure was committed to covering fragrance. I guess I was wrong. :( :(

    Shame on Allure!

    But, hugs to you, babe!

The only good part was the very first semi-negative comment I've ever seen in the passersby-comment-on-perfume feature: one woman said the scent reminded her of middle school!

My issue of W last month was so skinny I had to check twice to make sure it wasn't a separate mailer. Nope. Just the magazine at 1/3 its usual weight.
Apparently there's a new Twitter feed called “The Media is Dying” that's been keeping track of the various pieces of sky falling down…

LOL — I knew she had a good excuse!

LOL — true, but then, middle school is probably about the age target for that line!

It really was a waste — will have to go look at the other mags this month and see if this is industry-wide. It looks like they literally didn't have enough ads to pay for the editorial staff or something.

    Have a great weekend, R!

HA — that's exactly what I thought when I picked up the Allure — it was just so light!

Just finished flipping through LouLou mag and only one scent strip: EL's Sensuous. There were some little fragrance adds/mentions like Diptyque's new line of body products in lotions, shower gels and creams in their top 3 selling scents: Tam Dao, l'Ombre dans l'Eau, and Philosykos.
A little something is better than a lot of nothing, I think.

I know!!! The January issue is always so thin! I haven't gotten mine yet.

Checked my Jan. issues for the past 5 years.. and that month almost never has a scent strip. Guess it's their month to save on printing.

i wonder if a lot of mags will be trimming down due to the economy. i heard playboy will only be doing 11 issues in 2009 as opposed to 12.

Same here. It was so thin I double checked to see if it was some sort of cheesy ad mailer? Wonder if they're going bankrupt? Jan is thin, but not THAT thin.
    All I saw was Ralph.

One of the magazines I work for has recently broken its record for greatest number of pages. Don't suppose any of you cares to read about the greening of the plumbing, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning trades, but F.Y.I.: Solar is hot.

Thanks so much for looking — I guess my memory is just bad. I can't remember ever having one w/o a single scent strip!

I don't even know LouLou magazine!

Seems like I got mine earlier than usual. At any rate, no point holding your breath, it's pretty lame.

I understand Playboy in particular is having serious woes trying to compete w/ the huge amount of free porn on the internet. I'm surprised they've hung on this long…

There really wasn't much to see. There was an ad for the new MK Island Bermuda, but no scent strip so who cares…not that I use the scent strips anyway.

LOL…no, not my idea of relaxing reading material! But glad some print publications are continuing to thrive.

My Elle magazine was the skinniest I have ever seen it this month. I think alot of magazines lighten up after the Christmas shopping season. Its' still dissapointing, though.

I suppose they do…but boy, the Allure hardly seemed worth opening.
