Lazy Friday poll ~ International Talk Like A Pirate Day edition

Johnny Depp

Avast, me hearties, it’s Talk Like A Pirate Day!

I’ve always loved Talk Like A Pirate Day in theory, but sadly, I don’t speak Pirate (and if you don’t either, you can cheat with this nifty English-to-Pirate translator). But that doesn’t mean we need ignore the holiday altogether. Go ahead, nominate a fragrance for that most famous pirate of all, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Personally, I don’t care what fragrance he wears so long as he shaves off that silly beard, in which case he’d look just like Johnny Depp, wouldn’t he? And Johhny Depp would be just perfect in Monocle + Comme des Garçons Scent One: Hinoki.

Your vote?

Well, “yo-ho” back at ya, matie!

Heck, I don't know what Captain Jack Sparrow would wear. Eau de Dirty Pirate?

But his alter ego, Johnny Depp can wear any dang thing he pleases, honey! He's that fine IMHO. :) :)

    Hugs!

    Eau du Fier, definitively.

Idole de Lubin seems perfect for Captain Jack Sparrow, but with all of that eyeliner and hair beading, I am a little afraid he might wear a seasonal Escada. I would put Depp in Le Labo Patchouli 24 or Yatagan.

Hey, you do pirate better than I do! And LOL — he really can wear any dang thing, can't he?

    Perfect choice!

HA — it's so true, he'd be in Rockin' Rio, wouldn't he? Yatagan would be a better fit.

I'll go for the obvious joke and suggest Old Spice – there's a ship right there on the bottle! – or Bay Rum cologne, b/c it smells like Rum! (insert groans here)

I second the Eau du Fier, or CdG 8 88/Monacle they are perfect!

*Sigh* he can rock the smoky eye look perfectly. So not fair…. :~)

I think Captain Jack would just dab a bit of whatever he found on a trysting companion's dresser behind his ears (and in his armpits, and maybe take a swig), with a flourish, and call it a day. I doubt he would actually own a bottle of anything.
    ARRRRR, maties!!

muscs koublai khan is the first one that springs to my mind. maybe in a limited edition with skull flag on the bottle?

ooh, have to be L'artisan L'eau du Navigateur!

I think Captain Jack Sparrow would smell a bit like Laudanum, a scented oil from BPAL. Nutmeg, sassafras, black poppy, myrrh and I'd toss in a bit o' Tunisian Opium as well for a bit o' smoke. What say you?
Altho…Tama had the best answer LOL!

He can wear whatever he likes and sit next to me :) I would even share my Musc Ravageur with him, and I think this would suit him.

Won't even try to do pirate, but Depp reportedly loves Zino Davidoff. Arrrh!

Obvious, but clever nonetheless. Luca Turin even gave Old Spice 3 stars.

    Arrggghhh!

I think any good pirate – especially Johhny Depp – would smell a wee bit on the funky side. How about one spritz of L'Air du Rien and one spritz of Fleurs de Sel? A lovely combo of stinky & musky and fresh & salty for our favorite sea dog.

Ahoy Wench Robin (pirate talk…not a personal jab…)

I think a combo of fragrances would work well for any pirate (or pirate wanna-be) – how a bout a little McQueen Kingdom for some “funk”, a whole lotta Knize 10 for some smokey leather, and a little bit of Hermes Hiris for some lingering “unwashed hair”??? Hmmmm….maybe I'll put this together for myself today and see how many people think I smell like a pirate……

    Your Lily-livered Matey,

I dunno… I can see Captain Jack Sparrow swanning about in something ridiculously floral, with sillage that extends from hull to poop deck!

Hey, why not Old Spice? Every pirate should have a bottle, ladies included.

I'm not a big fan of the smoky eye, except on pirates. Everyone else looks racoon-ish.

Good one. I wish they'd put that back into general distribution, it's such a great scent. Nice to know you can still get your hands on it, anyway.

SJP does it pretty well, but on the whole not a good look for many folks.

For myself, I spend too much time concealing bags. Can't imagine creating them on purpose!

I just wasted 45 minutes playing with the translator — aaargh!! Avast, ye scurvy wench!
I think pirates wear L'Artisan Eau de Navegateur (what are the chances I spelled that right? slim to none) Johnny Depp should wear something perverse, like Mitsouko. Although I'd still think he was hot in almost anything. Mousson might dim my ardor…

Alas, no pirate speak from me.

I could see Cap'n Jack (as opposed to the lovely Johnny) wearing something boozy and stinky, like By Kilian's Straight to Heaven. It has something of a “morning after a wild night out” smell, at least on me….boozy breath + smoky clothes + something else a little bit rank. Or, I'd second the Dzing!

    Posted on 19 September 2008

Shiver me timbers, hoist a topsail, and get ye te the mizzenmast…
Hey, let's let Cap'n Jack keep up his sashaying a bit, and put him in Bal a Versailles. ;)

Me thinks the dastardly Jack steals Fifi Chachnil from is favrote ore's dresser. Aye and e puts a spray on is anky too-to remind em of the night, and to distrac from is persnel groooming what.

some really rank patchouli or SL MKK. something stinky but on him its hot because he's dirty sexy. (matey)

LOL — hey, my Hiris is *not* unwashed hair! But you get extra points for talking Pirate, and the Kingdom + Knize 10 sounds about right.

Isn't that translator fun? Navigateur, maybe? I can't remember, & too lazy to look it up. Wish I had a bottle, whatever it is.

Oh my, JD in Mousson gave me a very queasy feeling in my stomach…

Already lots of great suggestions but I have another one! I would opt for Jicky de Guerlain because it has this “wild” facet like Jack. Moreover, Jicky used to be a men's fragrance but is now worn mainly by women (Jack is very ambiguous, at ease with his feminine side, so I think he would love this twist). Lastly, I believe that Jack is some kind of “dandy” pirate (not the usual rough/scruffy pirate) so Jicky would be a nice “touche finale” on him.

I imagine him smelling like Lonestar Memories and in the little cabinet near his bed he probably has two or three bottles: Boucheron Femme and Chanel nr. 5 to rinse his mouth, and to 'freshen up' he puts behind his ears a good splash of Eau de Cologne 4711.

Ooh I'm late but I've thought about this, and I too came up with Musc Koublai Khan, L'eau de Navigateur and plain old bay rum. L'air de rien and Fleurs de sel are good picks too. If I were to compose a bespoke fragrance for Captain Jack, it would smell like the sea, sweat, rum and peanuts. Definitely peanuts. Hmm, I think that adds up to the salty scent to rule all salty scents…

  63. Anonymous
    Posted on 24 September 2008

There aren't enough salty peanuts fragrances, are there? Demeter ought to do your sea, sweat, rum & peanuts.

I can totally envision Captain Jack sniffing around a lady's vanity and picking out Ralph Lauren Notorious or Tom Ford Black Orchid. I see him as a fan of sweet and woody.
