What comes from deep friers all around the country was well ahead of expensive French perfume, frying bacon and freshly baked bread.

The dish, which is also listed as the nation’s favourite dish, has topped the survey of 3,000 people, which asked Brits to rate their most loved smell. It was commissioned by Finish Lemon Sparkle dishwasher products.
