Will see if I can find it…but wouldn't be surprised if it isn't available anywhere near me. Jil Sander is hard to find here — Saks has it, but I haven't a Saks nearby.

Hi, thanks. I don't really care about the bands image that much. That was just a thought put in at the end. I would be interested in an opinion – don't really “understand” this fragrance although I really like to wear it every now and then. It's everywhere in Germany these days… haven't looked for it in the UK where I am now.

Well, you know you can't get a “professional” opinion here in any case, but with JSM I won't be any help at all — haven't tried it and don't know the line at all so wouldn't even know how it fit in w/ the brand's image. But will see if I can find it at Bloomies one of these days…

I got a sample (actually two ) of JS Man. I'd be really curious to hear an honest professional opinion!

I quite like it but i must admit i was a bit disappointed – it's not very exciting. The head is only slightly fresh with some Bergamot but you already have the full idea at first sniff of what it's gonna smell like later – rather powdery-earthy with a comforting incensce note always in the background, the cedar/myrrh combination. So it's almost as if it was “lacking a head”.

I love the sage which is probably the most unusual note in the fragrance – it reminded me of Yamamoto's last men's cologne.

JSM smells a little bit gourmand to me, in the way Bulgari Black does or Marc Jacobs with the fig note. Thus for me it works quite as a comfort scent. As an amateur I can't make out though where this foody aspect comes from.

I went to the botanical gardens in Berlin some weeks ago and the Katsura tree started loosing the leafs – the rotting foliage smells like freshly baked cake, a bit like ginger bread or burned sugar, pretty amazing. JSM has a similar “taste” to it and I don't know why.

Although for me personally a sophisticated elegant scent can't be foody (rather classically oriental like Habit Rouge or “cologne”-ish like Helmut Lang) I find JSM pretty elegant and like it. I got compliments for it from a girlfriend & I would think it could actually be pretty popular with women and ON women.

The sillage is very good. The next day I still had a hint of cedar on my skin, but the first hours this is so well blended that I smell rather something like “precious woods”, a little poudery and sweet.

I guess it's well done, I just think it's not very original and it doesn't really fit to the brand's image which is (or used to be) something like elegant, intellectual minimalism pared with a German no frills sobriety (or is it “soberness”?) – but that's a different story…

Thanks for the background, I don't know much about Jil Sander. And yes, cedar is everywhere this year! Ozone, sadly, doesn't seem quite gone yet, but there is always hope…

JS has a weird story. 2006 was a new start for them, which is probably why they chose that name again. It'll hopefully be better than all their earlier releases for men. Thought they never were of an appropriate quality for the most renowned German fashion designer. If I remember well Background had only base notes! No heart, no head… After selling her name to Prada in 1999 JS left, returned, and finally left again because of disagreements with Patrizio Bertelli who, briefly said, wanted to buy cheaper materials which she opposed. Prada sold JS in 2006 to a British firm and Raf Simons was named new designer.

So CEDAR again! Have you noticed it's everywhere recently in men's perfumes? So much more my thing than those “Ozonic notes” of some years ago…

Yes, they already have several similar sounding scents, it is an odd choice for a name! But don't know the line well at all, in fact, they are rather hard to find in the US.

I got confused as there already is a “Sander For Man”

The best Sander frag I have used is Feeling Man, which is an unmistakable fragrance.

The other one I liked but sadly is discontinued is Background.

I don´t like Sport Man, Man Pure (although it is one of the best) ,Sander for Man OR Sun Men (Sun Men is a variation on Happy for men by Clinique)

I wish Background would be reissued or Feeling Man became more Available.

Although I must say this sounds promising… I hope they pack some of the “weirdness” that FM and Background had… that set them appart from the pack.
