Snippets: Chanel & Bon Jovi

Chandler Burr writes about Les Exclusifs de Chanel in today's New York Times.

Rock star Jon Bon Jovi is rumored to be the next celebrity to sign with Coty for a celebrity fragrance. If it's true, he picked the wrong time to leak the news: Kate Moss has all the attention at the moment.

Please tell me it's my new wide-screen monitor – Polge's head is chopped off the picture in the Burr article. Very disconcerting. The NYT wouldn't do that,do you think? Early morning confusion, sans caffeine. I will now go read the article, if I can get past the image of a headless perfumer.
Yes, R., I know I tend to make odd comments, but I couldn't ignore this. I'm only hoping others see Polge's head and it's my monitor, lol.

Its true, they chopped off his head! It appears on page 2 though :-)

And adding: actually, we don't know whose head they chopped off, do we? Could be Chandler Burr, could be some random interloper sitting in Coco Chanel's chair :-)

I don't care whose head it is at this point, it's just very.very. weird. I've never seen it before in a photo in a professional publication. Sure, Aunt Tillie may be unable to take a photo of the family members without chopping off the heads, but a NYT photographer?

Just a silly start to my day, laughing over this. Nice to see Polge, head attached, on p.2, though. Nice advertorial piece, absolutely nothing new about the perfumes, just a nice advertisement.

No, nothing new. It would have been interesting if they'd run it a few weeks ago, but now it is just what has already been said in every paper & magazine on the planet.

Like the Hermesscence (sp?) the Les Exclusifs will be forgotten in a few months…..except for ofcourse the old classics Cuir De Russue and Bois Des Iles which have stood the test of time.

I find the part of the article about No 22, Cuir de Russie, Bois des Iles and Gardenia very confusing. They were reissued in the 1980s and at no point since then were they removed from the production.

You could be right, but I seriously doubt it, and would also contest the idea that the Hermessences have been forgotten. In my very humble opinion, both the Hermessences & the Les Exclusifs are better than the vast majority of the niche scents on the market.

Very strange statement, and can only assume the Times edited something CB said — he couldn't possibly be unaware that they've been on the market all along.

Think the Hermessences are possibly my favourite line of all – they're my gold standard for quality and elegance. The new Exclusifs may not have reached the pinnacle of the originals, but an 'A' only seems disappointing next to an 'A+'.

    2nd all of that, N.

I'd rather have CB head chopped off. He writes about Les Exclusifs and seems to know nothing about them – neither that 4 of Chanel have already been relaunched and sucessfully sold, no about novelties. He hasn't tried them – that's for sure. So what kind of review is that?! – some marketing stuff, phrases of other people and nothing concrete about the SCENTS. I was very dissapointed to read this kind of review. Thanks God – we have perfume blogs :)

In all fairness, I don't think it was meant as a review. Still, it was disappointing that it didn't have any new information about the scents. Polge & Sheldrake really did seem to say the same things to every journalist they spoke to.

May be it was not supposed to be a review, but the journalist of the CB class could have made better article. By the way, R., one of russian perfumista, wrote a far better article after interview with Sheldrake. Here is a link: http://www.expert.ru/printissues/thing/2007/01/parfum/

Vika bois-de-jasmin knows her personally. may be you'll have somebody to translate if for you from Russian if you get interested

I do agree it was not terribly interesting, but it would have been more so if it had appeared a few weeks ago, before we'd read all the same stuff elsewhere. Would love to read that article! Will try running it through an online translator later today and see if I can make anything of it, thanks :-)
