I think a sell nothing day is a nice gesture, but I can also see why some people are cynical about it. And wow -- I'll have to start paying more attention to TBS's advertising, that is really comical!

Gosh, why the negativity? I think this is a genuinely lovely idea.

I'm really impressed that Le Labo are opening their store for workshops. They will have to pay staff and rent for the day they're open, but won't be able to recoup any money - so this is solely for the benefit of their customers. True, it's possible that anyone who attends the workshops will be impressed and come back the next day to buy stuff, but I don't see a problem with that. If a company is prepared to go out of its way to provide me with excellent service - like offering free workshops with no pressure to buy (in fact, the opposite) - I'm more than happy to thank them with my custom at a later date.

Admittedly, this might not be the pure spirit of anti-capitalism. But, bearing in mind that all private companies are inherently capitalist, they can't really pretend to be Che Guevara for a day. I'm happy for them to use Buy Nothing Day as an excuse to do something positive for their customers.

I'd rather that, anyway, than have them preach self-righteously to me that spending money on their products is saving the Third World, like some I could mention... *cough* The Body Shop *cough*

I agree. And I want to go on record here saying that I love many of their scents. :-)

R, because of the crowds, or buy nothing day? I admit I've never participated in buy nothing day. It seems kind of meaningless to me -- I'm still going to end up spending too much money on the holidays ;-)

I do almost all my shopping online, so Black Friday is pretty much just another day to me. But I do like the idea of holding workshops -- learn instead of buy? But looks like you aren't alone in finding it odd.

Oh, you are very hard on poor LL, LOL...

This is the sort of thing that can start with good intentions but be taken other ways. Same with their decision to do these city-exclusive scents.

I make it point never to shop on the day after Thanksgiving.

As for these fine folks closing their store, but really keeping it open for some type of workshop, I don't know what to say. It sounds rather confusing to me, lol!

Hugs!

I agree with the concept, but why don't they just close their store? Opening and just workshopping seems a bit hypocritical to me.

Personally, you'll never catch me in a shopping mall or any other retail venue on Black Friday. The crowds are downright scary.
