Thierry Mugler Le Parfum: new fragrance for Patrick Suskind's Perfume movie

Thierry Mugler will launch a limited edition set of fragrances in conjunction with the upcoming film version of Patrick Suskind’s Perfume. Le Parfum…

…comprises a box of 14 olfactive components (7.5ml phials) together with a 15ml bottle of a scent called Aura. This is to be used as the base scent to which the consumer can add the various components. Mugler worked with IFF [International Flavors & Fragrances] to create the set.

Look for Le Parfum in September; 1300 sets will be sold at €500 each. (via cosmeticsint)

I was just about to say 'me want' when I saw the price. Bah. Not so much now.

True, that really is rather pricy. I wish they would have limited it to like 6 single components so it'd be affordable.

I am tempted to think the price is a misprint. They are to launch a website in September and sell it online, so we shall just have to wait and see. At that price, I shouldn't think they would need more than 1300 units.

    Hello Robin,

It's not exactly that. The kit contains 14 +1 Scents, that are : Baby, Paris 1738, Atelier Grimal, Virgin Number one, Boutique Baldini, Amor & Psyché, Nuit Napolitaine, Ermite, Salon Rouge, Human Existence, Absolu Jasmin, Sea, Noblesse, Orgie. Each is an 'interpretation' by the perfumers of scenes of the book/the movie. The fragrances can be opulent, weird, or unsettling.

Aura (in 15 ml instead of 7.5 ml for the others), the 15th is a kind of imaginary view of Grenouille's art for perfumery. It is a kind of elixir with 84 components, but no more info about them…

Thanks for the info. If they are actually 15 finished fragrances as opposed to 1 plus a bunch of “components”, the price makes more sense.

How many redheaded girls did it take to make this?

LOL — I'd rather not think about that!

I find the projet really interesting. It's gilded, in a red velvet box, with precious bottles. But I smelled the scents, and I'm not sure they are specifically made to be worn. For me, it's really an artistic work, like an impressionnist collection in a museum. The website for information doesn't work for the moment… I think you will have to wait september.

Sounds lovely, if still not something I would spend 500 euros on.

I didn't post the website address since it isn't up yet, but in case anyone wants to watch it obssessively:

Interesting…I figured they would do some sort of tie-in for the movie, but from the post above, they seem to be more of an artistic piece, not every day perfumes that one would actually wear. And, sacre bleue!–the price!

    I want a wearable perfume (< >)…

    Hugs!

Thanks for the tip about all this. I'm doing a co-op buy on the Sillage de la Reine, but this is not going to happen with Mugler's stuff. I think.

That link doesn't work for me, I get a parent directory page and when I click it, nothing happens.

A, that was my point: the website isn't live yet.

ooooooooh!!! This is what we were waiting for… but I was hoping it would be something attainable… sigh. Thank you for the heads-up! I will have to wistfully watch! =)

And sometimes my brain isn't live, either, especially when having a fibro flare, which seems to be haunting me all this week :-(

A poster on my yahoo group wrote this. It seems some are more industrious than others, as this never would have occurred to me:

I've come up with my own set to carry just in my shop, using very authentic and true to the period scents. I started working on it as soon as i saw they were making this movie. I've also started making wooden stands to hold customers bottles like i saw in the trailer

for the movie. they will cut down on spillage!

mine will be a whole heckuva lot cheaper because i'm just a little no-name.

Linda's in Santa Cruz, for those in the vicinity — it's a fun place to play with both natural and synth raw materials.

they are 15 different finished fragrances indeed and never seen before. “how on earth can one create something surprising like this ?” asked a journalist who couldn't believe it was possible.

By people who read the booklet and saw the presentations and smelt, the price seems actually on the lower side. people seem to expect more like 1000Euros. Vogue Germany just wrote 2 full-pages about the luxury set (never happens for a normal fragrance launch), and said “with such a [low] price, it is impossible to think that Mugler is trying a commercial coup”.

several of the scents are wearable, when the Mugler website is active ask them if they might become available as stand alone. Mugler told the journalists they need to see an interest, and then they can see what they can do. they said there is no business plan for this project, it was first by passion for the project, for the book and for the two crazy perfumers.

it is an edition by subscription only, it is not one scent, and 14 to mix with that one at all. who the hell invented that story ?

  23. Anonymous
    Posted on 19 August 2006

that's the point, they did not start when they saw the movie was coming, way before, just as a hobby and a passion, they explained, from the book.

and by the way you cannot have scents as they were before because no-one does enfleurage any longer (yes a few grams in Grasse but given your price “heckuva lot cheaper” probably not that you could afford.) your store seems interesting though.

By the way, that is the biggest mistake in the Marie Antoinette scent reconstitution !!

they are already all gone ! on these first 1300 worldwide, I heard only 20 are left at the moment for the US when the movie opens late this year. It's crazy. They are organizing the next production. They promised they will produce more for people who are interested. and I am: one of my last hope of seeing/smelling something real' hot happening in perfumery.

btw several magazines say already 550 euros.
