Shopping alert: Sephora to take over JC Penny beauty counters

Starting this fall, Sephora will be creating “store-in-store” fragrance and cosmetic counters at JC Penny:

The departments are expected to be substantial — 1,500 to 1,800 square feet — and will carry many of the brands that are sold at Sephora. Sephora carries more than 250 prestige brands, from high-end hair products from Frédéric Fekkai to lipsticks by Clinique, Lorac and Stila. (via Women’s Wear Daily)

Great news for those of us who live in the middle of nowhere and don’t have quick access to the higher end department stores like Nordstrom and Saks, although it will be interesting to see which prestige brands are willing to appear in JC Penny. Stay tuned…

When I picture a Sephora store, with its black clothed, red-lipped, often elegant and sometimes European salespeople, the general ambience of the place, some of the high-end merchandise….and then plunk any version of this into a Pennys store, it just doesn't compute. Part of the fun of buying these treats is the trip to the city (Chicago, in my case) or the much awaited UPS truck. A watered down version isn't the answer either. I think it's a mistake.

It is hard to see how they'll transfer the ambiance, quite so…and the salespeople will still be under the management of JC Penny. It might or might not be a mistake for Sephora, but hard to see how it can't help JC Penny, which currently lacks a viable beauty department.

And personally I'll be VERY surprised if we see brands like Fekkai, Stila & Lorac end up at the JC Penny. But I've been surprised before, LOL…

Hey ladies, this might class up the joint a bit which is exciting for me since the closest sephora is a good way's away, plus JC Penny's for me is not worth shopping for. Their blaw clothing selection and commericalized perfumes, makes me won't to walk on by. It's time for a change to make it look somewhat up scale.

That's interesting and will give Penney's a boost. We are getting a new Penney's by my work, so that will be convenient for me if I need Sephora stuff. :O)

Have to agree, it can't do anything but help JC Penny's image!

Ah, that is what I need: a Sephora just across the street!
