Perfume news: on Vetiver Extraordinaire, Jo Malone, violets & more

Paco Rabanne Pour Homme didn't help columnist James Delingpole lose his virginity when he was a teenager, so he gave up on fragrance altogether until a recent trip to London's Les Senteurs:

The one that grabbed me instantly was Vetiver Extraordinaire [note: by Frederic Malle], which is so far removed from your normal idea of a scent that it’s almost an anti-scent. I can imagine chicks catching a whiff and being so intrigued by your air of mystery that they simply have to go to bed with you. But that might just be wishful thinking.

Well, maybe. But this chick would just steal your bottle. Read the rest of the article in the Times Online, and many thanks to Ruth for the link!

Jo Malone, who sold her eponymous line to Estee Lauder in 1999 but remained on as Creative Director, has announced that she is leaving the company to pursue other goals. The line currently has 16 fragrances. (via Women's Wear Daily)

Lovers of violet fragrances will enjoy this article about the violet growers of Toulouse (link no longer working, sorry!):

The perfume group Berdoues, which has manufactured a violet-based perfume since 1936, is also revamping its range with the launch of a new “more feminine” fragrance for Saint Valentine's Day on February 14. “Globally on the perfume market there is a renewal. This violet is a new interpretation of what my grandfather was doing 70 years ago,” said managing director Sophie Berdoues-Coudouy.

The Vancouver Sun has an interesting article on “The Politics of Perfume” in the workplace.

The crack (in the Times article) about not being quite perverted enough for the Lib-Dem leadership campaign made me laugh!

That Times article was really fun. I went back and read your review on Vetiver Extraordinaire. I think I'm going to need to sample this, it sounds intriguing.

    *skids to a stop*

Another violet! I thought that Maison Berdoues already *had* another violet, which I think I saw on their French site, but couldn't manage to translate beyond that I couldn't buy it here. Maybe this is the same one, but released more widely.

That VE soap is just unreal. I adore it. Haven't tried the other two yet!

Will have to go look up their site, I have tried the original, but nothing else from the line…

Jo Malone stepping down of the company she founded is for me the main news of the day. It's a bit of a shock. Couldn't she at least stay as a consultant. Maybe she will be back, like when Annick Goutal left her company in 1990 to come back a year later.

It will be very interesting to see if the upcoming releases are in the same style, or if they move on to something else entirely. And wonder if there is already something in the pipeline other than Nectarine Blossom, which isn't in the US yet…

I'm hoping for eau de parfum versions of Jo's bestsellers.

LOL — in my house, unfortunately, it is all the other way: my husband steals *my* fragrances.

V, I am going to have to look for that perfume, although I don't love the Berdoues Violette de Toulouse (or whatever it is called).
